In case you missed it, here are the people playing the roles in the HBO miniseries!

aldenoneil | 1000 comments That was great. I'm more excited for this series than I probably should be - I don't know that I've ever looked forward to anything on TV nearly as much.

It's weird seeing names of smaller characters pop up - it will be interesting to see how they handle so many named players.

I know, it's gonna be a crowded dressing room! Good thing so many people die.

Heheh - looking forward to it - i'm more interested in how they will deal with the more adult content. You girl saying Camel C*** doesn't really sit well with main stream telly. (Although Kick Ass movie seems not care)

Yeah, being HBO, I think they'll be ok with it ;)

Paul Kelly (ptekelly) | 206 comments Really? We don't get HBO as such here - but we do get the shows on various channels.

Tell you how bad things can be here. They edit out about 10% of Friends. FRIENDS!!!! Even when it is shown after 9pm. I bet I have missed most of the best jokes. They have even started to edit out any conversation about porn. This is Friends - what else do Joey and Chandler talk about?

Oh yeah - looks like more may be on their way out too.

I suggest not reading comments if you are not up to date as there may be spoilers

Aaron (scruffynerfer) I hope that this show makes over the pond onto the UK screens. Would love to watch it, although I haven't managed to get started on the first book yet :( FAIL

message 9: by Vance (new)

Vance | 362 comments What I liked about the story was that it was loosely based on the York v. Lancaster battles in the Wars of the Roses, so many of the names are meant to line up (non-historically) with English and Scottish names. The name Mallister is very similar to my name, McAlister. It may be purely coincidence, but the Mallister coat of arms has the same primary device as the McAlisters', and we are also a coastal, seagoing clan. As a history buff, it is akin to alternate history mixed with fantasy.

Man, that's exciting. A lot of the choices are startlingly close to how I imagined the characters looking, too.

Paul, yeah, if you watch any of the HBO series True Blood, you'll see why HBO should have no problem with the mature content of Game of Thrones. ;)

message 11: by Brett (new)

Brett (LOK1) Just hope they don't slaughter the story like so many serries/movies do to good stories.

Paul Crittenden (mophreo) | 20 comments Wow, Jamie Campbell is hot. She's got a huge adam's apple though. Wait... What? SER Waymar Royce? Is this a JRPG?

One of the best shows HBO ever had was Deadwood. There wasn't a single scene that didn't have at least a "dammit" and most of the language was much harder. In fact, there are YouTube videos that edit the show down to just the cursing -- some of them are almost three minutes long. (Note, the linked video is very, very NSFW.)

The show also featured, though less frequently, nudity, both male and female. So I don't think we have to worry about the story being adulterated for content.

Yeah, I thought that was a bit... creative?

Language they'll include, and nudity, sure, but remember there's a lot of harsh, forced sex in George's tale, to put it mildly, and some of it is rather pivotal to certain characters. I'm sure HBO will handle it carefully, but I can see them shying away from a great deal of it. It will be interesting to see what they think is proper and important to the story, and what can be implied or cut out entirely.

Eric | 4 comments Awesome choices for the Royal family. Can't wait.

Ben, saw that news, too. I agree with the io9 folk that it's a good sign of HBO taking the world-building for the series seriously.

Ben | 116 comments I think HBO alone has the ability to make the show great. Complicated shows are their stock and trade, see e.g. The Wire, aka The Best TV Show That Ever Was and Ever Will Be.

Ooh! They need to find a roll for Idris Elba.

message 20: by David (new)

David Gerritsen (davidalso) | 13 comments Just started reading the series again. God I love these books.

message 21: by Ix (new)

Ix | 44 comments I'm kind of torn here. I've boycotted HBO ever since they cut Carnivale, but I really want to see this series. I might give them a second chance (though my love for you, Carnivale, is in now way lessened. Don't look at me that way, Carnivale, we've been together a long time. You can't be threatened by me talking to HBO on an occasional basis.)

Yeah, I'll have to resub to HBO once this comes closer to fruition.

Tracy (tracy_falbe) | 14 comments I don't buy TV service, especially premium, but I will be the first one when this show is released on DVD or bluray.

Jim (jimherdt) | 71 comments I love the books so much, I'm not sure I want the depiction on video to ruin the perspective I've developed. I think I'll sit on the sidelines until the reviews come in.

Best Regards, Jim

message 24: by Ix (new)

Ix | 44 comments That'd probably be the safest thing for me too, Jim, to stave off potential disappointment. However, I want to throw my money and Nielsen power at Mr. Martin in the hope that networks learn to take chances on great books.

Who knows, maybe someday we'll see Westeros Land next to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando.

message 25: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimherdt) | 71 comments Now that would be pretty neat!
