Sandeep (sandeep04) | 62 comments I used to read books in aldiko book reader app installed in my android phone..Its pretty user friwndly, u can easily manage your all books in in-built shelf and it has fast search option. I used to read books in low brightness and currently have around 150 books in it... :)

Ken (kendoyle) | 263 comments Does anyone use the Stanza app? It was the first e-reader app I used on my iPhone and it's still my favorite.

Sheetal | 668 comments How do you guys prefer reading your e-book on a big screen smartphones or tabs or pads or laptops or kindle? Btw what is your take on kindle? I am more of a holding-a-actual-book-in-hand-person. So just curious.

message 504: by Sandeep (new)

Sandeep (sandeep04) | 62 comments I think kindle doesnot support the epub gormat of epub and only supports mobi format.. which might be a disadvantage as most of the free ebooks available online are in epub format...
btw i also prefet paperbacks rather than ebooks..and the only reason i read ebooks is that they can be downloaded free of cost whether its latest book or a bestseller..anything!!!

Book'd Hitu (hituzbookworld) | 102 comments Nothing to worry about ebook formats, any format is converted to any format.
There are many online as well as offline converters available on internet.

Ruchi Vasudeva | 57 comments @Sheetal hi! like you I'm a book holding type too. But I have kindle on my phone and it does offer convenience. I've used ipad for reading too and found I liked reading on it too. once I get absorbed in the book the device hardly matters to me. However my daughter absolutely prefers print...funnily enough!

Yes, my son too prefers print, whereas I do E Readers too.

message 508: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments @Sheetal, ideally i would prefer reading a physical book lazing out on the beach any time. But, following situations warrant an e-reader for me:

1) Reading in my cafeteria while having lunch, am embarrassed to carry a book to my cafeteria - smartphone
2) Traveling - on long vacations where carrying more books is inconvenient - Nook e-reader
3) Reading during office hours when am bored, again am embarrassed to read a physical book - pdfs on desktop and kindle app for windows.

message 509: by Sheetal (new)

Sheetal | 668 comments Thank you all for your insights. Well one thing is well established that nothing gives you immense pleasure then holding a book in hand and reading. But then e-books are preferred for reading discreetly in office. And are free too.

dely | 5485 comments An wrote: "Also, if I don't know a word, all I have to do is hold my finger on the word for a few seconds and voila! A windows pops open with the detailed definition of the word. So not only do I have the book, but also the dictionary on my fingertips. Ever since I've started using my Kindle, my vocabulary has expanded. If I had a traditional book, I know that I'd feel lazy to lookup a word. I'd tend to wing it. "

Indeed, I agree! The dictionaries are also useful if we read books in a different language.

Before buying a kindle I was worried that I would feel the lack of the paper and all the things related to traditional books but now I really love my kindle and I read both, ebooks and "normal" books.
An e-reader is good if we read books with 400 or more pages: it is light to hold in one hand and to turn pages.
It is also good if we read outside during a windy day; we don't have pages that turn alone!
You can carry it everywhere putting it in a handbag.

I am really satisfied and happy with my kindle but I know that there are a lot of questions and doubts before using one above all if we are used to read traditional books.

To
Those who own Nook Simple Touch, there is a software update. I downloaded it onto my Nook and it got automatically updated to a higher version.

None. I don;t even know what the upgrade has done to the EReader. Everything remains the same.

Alekh Khanna (alekhkhanna) | 6 comments Hey,
Stumbled on this group via Google. I'm an avid reader and recently purchased a Nook HD+ (love the gorgeous 9 inch screen at that resolution). I was wondering whether the supplied charger will work with or Indian power supply or do I need to get a transformer ?

message 515: by Alekh (new)

Alekh Khanna (alekhkhanna) | 6 comments An wrote: "It should. It's supposed to be 110V to 240V."
Thanks An ! Should get it by next week. Just prepping up with a case/screen protector etc. Also thinking of buying an extra charger + cable as one never knows when Nook accessories might get the boot (B&N has already declared that they won't be producing more Nooks).

Why did you choose Nook as opposed to Kindle? Price?"

Not really. For books/novels, I prefer physical editions, but as an avid reader of comics as well, I was looking for an e-reader (physical copies are insanely expensive now-a-days, plus quite heavy to tote around). Used to an iPad (Gen 1), so wanted something in the >8 inch space plus an expandable memory card slot. Nook HD+ fits right into place ! And the resolution will be a treat for reading comics.

Ashish K | 27 comments disappointed with kobo bookstore. was looking forward to purchase kobo touch, however very few indian authors book available for purchase. Vast price difference between amazon and kobo books.
Will need to consider kindle.
in case i go with nook, do i need US address to purchase ebooks?

message 519: by Ashish (new)

Ashish K | 27 comments thanks An, i am aware of Amazon Kindle. Wanted to check what other options i have. Hence was inquiring about nook simple touch.

Kindle basic is the only option for me from amazon. I dont want to pay more for the old paperwhite when the new 2013 paperwhite retails in us market with lesser price.

message 520: by Ashish (new)

Ashish K | 27 comments Agreed. Daily i work on LCD screen and my recent reads on nexus 7 have resulted in a lot of eye strain.

I would be purchasing a kindle soon.

message 521: by Lavanya (new)

Lavanya (lavanyas) | 191 comments Kindle has the BEST collection of ebooks.
But, I use the old version of kindle e-reader app. It has three options- Day, Night & Sepia.
But, not only kindle reader is good, there are many others like: Aldiko, Moon Reader, etc.
In Aldiko- you can select dark and white mode. You can select ANY background and text colour.
p.s. old aldiko app is good. the new one is horrible :/
Moon Reader- is good. I love it. It has themes too.
Both readers support public domain library.

message 522: by Lavanya (new)

Lavanya (lavanyas) | 191 comments Aldiko, Moon reader, etc. can read epub files.
Kindle can read .mobi files.

message 523: by Lavanya (new)

Lavanya (lavanyas) | 191 comments I don't know... I use epub more. But now that I started using Kindle, I use mobi too. :)

message 524: by Ashish (new)

Ashish K | 27 comments i believe epub being an open standard ebook format should be more used in india.
Since amazon had bought mobipocket, they would stick to mobi.
so the fight is on between epub and mobi. PDF are too large in size. I have seen only magazine in PDF format.

message 525: by Lavanya (new)

Lavanya (lavanyas) | 191 comments Yes, Ashish. Pdf files are HUGE!
I just convery my pdf to epub using online epub converters :D

message 526: by Lavanya (new)

Lavanya (lavanyas) | 191 comments Convert* (typos!)

Pallavi (bookfetisher) Hi...
My basic Kindle (which i bought last year) is damaged, well coz of my negligence. The screen is half frozen. I contacted Amazon care but they dont have any service centers hence i cant replace the screen. So anyone has any idea is there any way to replace it (by ourselves/ someone who has done it before)?

Nikhil iPad rocks for me...best device as my "MAASI" mom sister describe as magic box..

message 533: by Nikhil (new)

Nikhil Just increase the brightness...nd believe me if u had one ,there is no comparison to iPad.

message 534: by Nikhil (new)

Nikhil But I always prefer real book than e-books..just my preference.

message 535: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 878 comments I got a kindle basic recently from the reliance store in Kerala for rs. 5000. I was sceptical at first whether I would like it compared to paperbacks but I've fallen in love with it. I've got books I only dreamed of reading in my kindle now. I have almost 100 books. have finished 3 already. I do not know whether I'll come back to paperbacks again. But as of now I am content with kindle. I use calibre for converting the various formats. I got a cover for tablet which fit the kindle snuggly for 300 rs.

message 536: by Book'd (new)

message 539: by Mayank (new)

Mayank Singh (serverguy) So if I buy the Kindle E-ink basic version (Rs 6k approx) will I be able to buy and load books only from Amazon or other sources as well ? Will I be able to read e-books I bought from Flipkart on it ?

message 540: by Niveditha (new)

Niveditha (neetu_30) | 25 comments @Mayank- Hi! I have a kindle basic and I load books from all different sources into it. They work just fine. The only drawback I find is it supports fewer formats compared to the other e-readers available in the market. My sister has got a kobo touch which is in the same price range and supports almost all eBook formats including the ones for comic books. You can check that out as well.

message 541: by Mayank (new)

message 545: by Ahtims (new)

mayank, you just have to convert other formats to mobi format using calibre e book converter

Hey Abhishek, my sister got it from the croma e-store. They do have a paperwhite like device. I believe it's called the kobo glo. I do not know much about it though.

The Kobo Glo/Touch is an interesting device - looks decent and has expandable memory (unlike the Kindle). However, their online collection is no comparison at all with the Kindle store.

However, if you have no moral qualms about reading pirated books, the device may prove to be good value.

P.S. Moderators, just to clarify, I'm not trying to suggest/recommend piracy here. (Wouldn't EVER pirate a book!)

No, Mayank. Flipkart locks books onto their own reading application with an FKB extension, and you have to strip them into DRM-free versions, before you can use them on the Kindle.

Therefore, no legal way to do this.

message 549: by Sandeep (new)

Sandeep (sandeep04) | 62 comments Hi Fellow people, I was thinking of buying kindle paperwhite but the only query i hav is do this device supports comics? also does it shows a coloured book covers or black n white??

message 550: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Black and white covers, and while you can open (some) comics on it, no fun reading them. :)
