What is the significance of the cover art with the butterfly in the jar?

I have no idea why the book cover has a butterfly in a jar. Anyone have any ideas?

the first time I saw the cover I thought the book was a murder mystery about strangled love and some creepy stalker plot.

I'm thinking beautiful (butterfly) disaster (jar) meaning it's sad to trap such a beautiful creature. Maybe it is signifying the relationship of the 2 characters. It is a chaotic relationship with beautiful potential.

Abby has felt caged her whole life being raised by a dad who cared more for gambling than he did her. She left her hometown to go to school at a new city so she could escape and be free. Her fear to get involved with Travis is that she doesn't want to be "put in a cage" again. Especially when they go to Vegas and Travis is not himself for a while. Abby realizes this and panics because she is afraid that Travis has the potential to put her in a cage. This is why she continually says they have no chance together. She refers to their relationship as a beautiful disaster because she sees herself as the pretty butterfly that Travis has locked in a jar.

In the end she realizes that her fear of being "caged" is her own paranoia, and that Travis wants an equal and healthy relationship. It all works out.

I don't think it means anything honestly. The first self published edition had a girl sticking out her tongue with like some Mythology theme on it. The second book I think just kept the butterfly theme.

I think the whole butterfly thing is just hot right now. Like Point of Retreat (although that had significance) and a few other books.

My thinking on it was: A butterfly represents transformation...the jar represents they both being trapped in their past ways. It just took finding one another for them to truly transform and to let themselves love another.
