Notorious, handsome, and decadent, the Lords of Vice break rules and hearts with equal aplomb. But what if one woman is on to their game—and the player becomes the played?
One Stolen Kiss
Young, tender, and highly impressionable, Lady Regan can’t help but be intrigued by her brother’s wayward friends—the wickedly charming Lords of Vice. One man in particular, the dashing Lord Hugh Mordare (known simply as “Dare” among the ton), utterly captivates her—in spite of his reputation as a notorious womanizer. But when she steals an innocent kiss from Dare, Regan is swiftly packed off to boarding school, safely away from danger…and desire.
One Sweet Seduction
Five years later, Regan returns—a proper lady and ravishing beauty. Miss Swann’s Academy for Young Ladies has taught her how to behave in polite society. But all the training in the world cannot extinguish her love for Dare. Now, she hopes to beat the master of seduction at his own game—by daring Dare to love her in return. This time, both of their hearts are on the line…and winner takes all.
Alexandra Hawkins is an unrepentant Anglophile who discovered romance novels as a teenager and knew that one day she would be writing her own. In "The Lords of Vice" series, she has combined her love of English history, mythology, and romance to create sensual character-driven stories that, she hopes, will touch readers' hearts.
There's a difference between rogue and unrepentant jerk and this hero crossed that line for me.
It's already mildly uncomfortable that he was close to her when she was growing up and remembers kind of lusting after her when she walked out of a lake in nothing but her wet shift when she was thirteen. He was twenty one. To his credit, he stopped hanging around her then, but really? Thirteen? That's kind of creepy. And yet for all his noble intentions to steer clear of her and keep his hands to himself, when they find themselves thrown together when she's fifteen, he has no problem with making a move on her. Even if she adores him and she's more than willing, just... no.
So fast forward five years and she's all grown up and still wants him. I like this trope, actually, so I'm still hanging in there. There's some back and forth and he's resisting (mostly because she's his best friend's younger sister), but STILL, one moment alone and he totally throws that out the window and takes her virginity on the library floor.
Then when they get caught by the brother, who asks what he intends to do, he basically just shrugs and says he'd make a terrible husband.
NOPE. No no no.
I'm fine with rogues deflowering virgins (assuming she's willing, and this girl was), but once the deed is done and you've "ruined" her, YOU DO THE RIGHT THING, especially if she's your best friend's little sister and a girl you helped raise and ostensibly care about.
Sure he comes around and marries her, but he lost me with that initial refusal.
aq suka baca novel2 ttg scoundrel yg begitu jatuh cinta lgs bertekuk lutut ^_^ apalagi sama ceweq yg kuat & ga gampang mewek, wah fave ku banget tuh.
Lady Regan, adik dr frost, Earl chillingworth, sejak kecil sudah ditinggalkan sang ayah yg kemudian sang ibu pergi meninggalkan regan & frost sendirian sejak regan masih kecil. otomatis frost lah yg membesarkan regan. well sebenarnya bukan cuma frost aja yg membesarkan regan tp juga ada Sin, Vane, Hunter, Saint, Dare and Reign or lebih dikenal dgn lords of vice. masing2 dari mereka memberikan pengalaman & pelajaran yg berbeda pd regan & mereka sudah menganggap regan spt adik mereka sendiri. selama ini pengaturan itu tidak mengalami hambatan apapun. yah walo regan tumbuh tdk spt lady2 yg lain. regan mampu memegang pedang, memanjat & memancing, xixixixixi hasil pengajaran sahabat2 sang kakak. tapi semua harus berubah ketika frost mendapati regan duduk dipangkuan dare & berciuman saat regan berusia 15 tahun. frost yg tadinya tdk bgt mendengar bujukan2 sepupu jauh mereka, lady karmack (kl ga salah namanya) yg menginginkan regan mendapat pendidikan seorg lady terhormat bgt melihat adegan di perpustakaan itu lgs memerintahkan regan brangkat ke sekolah para lady tersebut.
regan jengkel 1/2 mati. segala bujukan dilancarkannya tp frost tidak bergeming. meminta bantuan yg lainnya pun percuma saja apalagi sejak kasus kebakaran di dapur nox akibat experimen vane. sebenarnya rada janggal nih baca regan yg baru 15 tahun berciuman dgn dare yg sudah 23 tahun. kok kayak pido ya >_<
5 tahun terkurung tanpa diperbolehkan 1 kalipun ke london membuat regan jengkel. frost tidak memperdulikan segala protes regan. kl mo nurutin keinginan frost bisa2 regan masih harus bertahan 5 thn lagi. maka regan nekat membohongi lady karmack dengan mengatakan frost tdk keberatan regan kembali ke london. kebohongan yg sukses tentunya mengingat regan akhirnya stlh 5 tahun kembali ke london. tanpa sepengetahuan frost. regan juga punya misi lain, dia akan merayu dare. regan tidak dpt melupakan ciuman itu.
lord hugh atau lebih dikenal sbg Dare, salah 1 lords of vice sejak peristiwa charles, sang kakak yg merebut allegra Dare menutup hati dari wanita lain kecuali regan bertahun2 harus menghadapi charles yg suka cari gara2 dengannya juga allegra yg spt nya walo sudah menjadi istri charles masih menggenggam erat Dare membuat sahabat2 Dare yg lain mendorong Dare untuk menerima perhatian seorang janda muda nan jelita. hal yg memang akan dilakukan Dare kalo saja Regan tidak tiba2 nongol dihadapan Dare. Regan yg dulu memang cantik tp Regan yg sekarang bukan hanya cantik tp sangat2 memesona. perhatian Dare jadi terpusat pd Regan & tidak lagi berminat pd sang janda muda nan jelita. Dare jd sibuk melotot kemanapun Regan pergi. bahkan Vane pun hampir dihajarnya saat ketahuan hendak mencium Regan - xixixixixi cemburu ni ye. parahnya nih Frost malah meminta Dare pindah ke rumah mereka & membantunya menjaga Regan.
Dare emang menjaga Regan, saking menjaganya sampe Regan dipeluk sendiri :d bukan Regan namanya kalo mengalah bgt saja pd keinginan frost & dare yg ingin mengurungnya saja dirumah. sesuai dgn niatnya semula, Regan benar2 merayu Dare, Dare tidak diberinya kesempatan sama sekali untuk menghindar. yah gimana mo menghindar wong tiap kali menjauh dikit eh regan dikrubungi para penggemar jadilah dare malah tambah meletup letup sendiri. wakakakakaka seneng deh si Dare jd ngejar regan kemana2.
saking dibuntuti kemana2 beneran khan Dare jd ga bisa nyangkal ketertarikannya pd Regan. Dare ingin memiliki Regan untuk dirinya sendiri & memang dilakukannya. wah untuk ga ketahuan frost kalo Dare sibuk mencumbu Regan...or sebenarnya frost udah tau ya??? gimana frost mau ga tau kalo mereka sibuk beraktivitas di kamar Dare yg pas bersebelahan dgn kamar frost...ya ampun ini ber 2 emang terlalu nekat deh... untung frost ga nembak mereka ber 2 saat itu juga.
tp jangan salah ya...frost mungkin terlihat cuek & tidak pedulian tp baginya regan adl segalanya. cueknya frost adl cuek dingin. frost tau seharusnya stlh aktivitas regan & dare mereka harus segera menikah tp frost tau selama dare masih blm bisa melepaskan diri dr allegra maka regan hanya akan menderita, jd lebih baik regan & dare tidak usah menikah.
masalah yg terjadi di keluarga mordare pun sangat rumit, dare tidak mau regan ikut terseret masuk ke neraka dare berusaha menjauh dr keluarganya tp tampaknya dia tidak bisa meloloskan diri. charles terlalu semena2 & tak terkontrol lagi. charles melakukan apapun yg dia mau tanpa memikirkan konsekuensinya. tidak sedikit perempuan yg datang ke rumah meminta pertanggungjawabannya. belum lagi mabuk2 & judinya. yg paling parah adl menghajar allegra habis2an. sebenarnya kasian allegra tp dia sendiri yg meminta nasibnya khan. dulu allegra adl kekasih dare namun ternyata allegra berselingkuh dgn charles. saat allegra ketahuan mengandung dare bersedia bertanggung jwb namun allegra gila kedudukan lebih memilih charles sbg suaminya. bayangan suatu hari nanti akan mjd seorg duchess membuat allegra menghianati dare. namun kenyataan allegra yg hanya bisa melahirkan seorg putra tanpa bisa memberikan heir membuat charles semakin menginjak2nya, emang pd dasarnya charles tidak pernah mencintai allegra, dia hanya ingin merebut milik dare.
nama dare pun didapat dari hasil pertarungannya dgn charles. ini nih yg bikin aq ga suka bgt dgn ayah charles & dare. dia suka banget melihat ke 2 anaknya beradu & berkelahi. pertikaian dare & charles pun menurutku tercipta gara2 sang ayah. pertikaian masa kecil yg terus berlanjut hingga sekarang. jd sang ayah lah pencipta kerusuhan yg sebenarnya. duh aq puas banget waktu si ayah hancur luluh lantak ketika charles memang sudah tidak bisa diperbaiki lagi.
kematian charles membuat dare tidak bs lagi menghindar dr keluarganya krn skrg dia lah yg menduduki posisi charles, tp itu bukan berarti dia akan menerima allegra kembali. hatinya memang sangat terluka oleh charles & allegra tapi entah kapan lukanya perlahan2 mulai sembuh & dare mulai berani mencintai wanita lain. yahhh siapa lagi yg bisa menyembuhkan luka hati dare selain regan??? Regan yg sudah dikenalnya sejak kecil ternyata sanggup membuat Dare membuka dirinya kembali, Regan adl wanita yg bisa membuat Dare berani memikirkan pernikahan kembali, yg memang dilakukannya secara diam2 tanpa sepengetahuan frost & dikediaman vane dgn dibantu ibunda vane, vane nya sih berdiri disamping dare sambil cemberut berat xixixixixi vane takut kena amuk frost :d
soal allegra yahhh pd dasarnya allegra tuh ambisius namun ambisi nya terhempas bgt keras membuatnya jelas jd mulai berbuat aneh2...ketambahan sikap charles yg gila plus kenyataan dia tidak bisa memberikan seorg anak laki2 bagi keluarga mordare. makin jadi gila-lah si allegra.....udah gitu eh dare yg jd tumpuan harapan terakhirnya ternyata sudah menikah dgn regan, gadis yg sangat disukai ibunda dare. wahhhhhh triple crazy deh si allegra.......salah sendiri sih...terlalu gila kehormatan hingga menghianati dare tp ternyata pd akhirnya masih aja ga bisa jd duchess khan??? malah skrg regan lah calon duchess berikutnya. bagussss itu memang pantas didapatkan allegra, apalagi dgn tindakannya membunuh si janda muda jelita yg berhasil menarik perhatian dare. bukan itu aja allegra bahkan nekat mencekik regan. wahhhh untung frost ga ada disitu, bisa2 allegra dicekik sendiri sama frost...
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhh buku yg sangat menarik & sangat2 ku suka.... aq suka semua lords of vice. kompak banget mereka. mereka memang terkenal rogue & scoundrel tp ternyata mereka sangat mencintai keluarga.... bagussssssssssssssssssssssss
This is the third book of "Lords of Vice" series, and there are seven of them. Lords of Vice are seven friends, very close, more like brothers. All seven are titled, rich, Rouges, Rakes and Scoundrels and very proud of it. Rules for these men are there in order to be broken.
We meet all of them, (Sin, Vane, Hunter, Saint, Frost, Dare and Reign) in "All Night with a Rogue", where we can't but fall in love with Sin, who is one sick Rogue. I just loved everything about that story. All the characters, the plot, pace, dialogue and humor. In this first book we get a glimpse of each of these men, and we are intrigued with each one. From the beginning, from the first moment our Hero looks into Juliana's eyes, we're hooked. We root for these two and we are rewarded with telling of a wonderful love story.
In the second book "Till Dawn with the Devil" the boys are back and Reign's story is just full of twists and turns and once more we're just lured into their world with a very compelling story in which one more Lord of Vice succumbs to love. Ms. Hawkins yet again did a wonderful job in telling the story of Reign and Sophia. All the characters were very well developed, and we've gotten to know more of our Lords and their lives, and at this point we are well into the series that we need to know more of Dare and Allegra. What happened, how it happened and why it happened?
"After Dark with a Scoundrel" opens with Regan, Frosts sister at fifteen who was basically brought up with the Lords of Vice as brothers. She had a fancy for one in particular, Dare. And here is where I encountered my first problem with this book. Dare is eight years older than Regan, and while at her twenty to his twenty eight, all is well and good, I had a big problem with a twenty three year old dallying with a fifteen year old sister of his best friend. I just didn't buy it. It felt wrong. On top of all that, Frost's only reaction upon finding those two kissing is to send Regan to a Boarding school. Dare gets off scot free. Fast forward, and I mean FAST, five years and we get to meet the little Regan at twenty, back from school and still what? In love, in infatuation with Dare that she set out to seduce him? Yet again, I'm not buying it. As for Dare, at sixteen he falls madly, passionately in love with Allegra, who is his age as well. He loves this girl with all of his heart and soul, and she cheats on him with his older brother Charles, (the future Duke), who has no qualms of getting the stupid chit pregnant and passing her off on his younger brother. When push came to shove, Allegra admits to Charles having fathered her child and in that moment Dare's heart breaks, but still he would have married her, however question still remains if he would have forgiven her.
Eleven years later, we see Dare living with the consequences of this triangle. Allegra's panting for him, demanding his presence, Mrs. Randall wants him for her lover, and Regan is after him also. What's a poor Scoundrel to do, but seduce his friend's sister and never even thinking much of the consequences of the liaison? NOT BUYING IT! NONE!
I wish this story was thought through better. It had so much more to give us. It was rushed, and it suffered. BIG TIME! I wanted to feel the pain of a boy who was mentally abused by his father as well as physically by his brother. A young man who was badly used by a girl who played him falls, who has broken his heart, and afterwards for years played on his sympathies. I wanted to know that at twenty three he knew better than to kiss a girl that was vulnerable and innocent. Yes, I know. He's a Scoundrel. But even though he is, I needed him to have honor. To have shame. He showed none. Frost baffled me as well. He finds out that his best friend takes his sisters virginity, and he coldly throws him out. Really? Seriously? That's it? NOT BUYING IT!
I've anticipated this book for a while and it let me down. I expected more of this story. Dare's story should have been as compelling as the other two. I will buy the next four in the series. At this point I'm invested in these men. I like them. I want to meet the women they fall in love with. I also want to let Ms. Hawkins know that she can do better than this book. I know it. I read the first two books and I LOVED both.
Lady Regan, was raised by her brother, a member of the Lords of Vice. As such she grew up learning to climb trees, fishing, fencing lessons and gambling. Regan is not your typical English miss. But when Regan and "Dare" are caught kissing, her brother sends her away to school and for five years she has been patient. Regan was hurt when her brother sent her away, and from the only family she has ever known. Now she is ready to take part of the Season, and put her brother in his place a bit, and seduce Dare and show him what she is made of. Dare was betrayed by the only woman he ever loved, who married his brother because he was the "heir". Dare is the second son, and has been a member of the Lord of Vice, but there is one woman who has held his interest more than any other, but she is forbidden, but when she comes back to London, and he is forced to escort her, passions between them are inflamed and this time it won't be just desire than could be dangerous to them...
After Dark With A Scoundrel is the third installment in the Lords of Vice series. I am very proud of myself for having read this series in order so far....I hope I can keep going strong. I have the worst habit of reading a series out of order. But since all of the books are at my local library, I decided to try this one in order. In this book we have Dare's book, and we have Regan as the heroine. Now I will say that if you have yet to read this author, and you love historical romance and you want to get started into historical romance...this series just might be for you. I feel like this author is underrated, but as far as regency romances go, this author is at the top of the list. You can never go wrong with Alexandra Hawkins.
We begin with bit of bad luck for Regan. Regan is a bit of a tom boy, and has a connection and bond with all of the Lords of Vice, and you see the close ties she has with them. AT the beginning she is only fifteen, and through a twist of events, she ends up in a sensual embrace with Dare, which she doesn't expect but that kiss changes her. When her brother forces her to school, she is furious and hurt. Now we skip ahead five years, Regan is still just as mischievous and sassy as ever, five years at school hasn't changed her personality, she just has a better way of seeming to be more polished. She is determined to come to London and make some changes in her life. Her first goal is to show up with no notice to her brother, and to seduce the one man she craves. This heroine...was so fun, and she definitely has the type of personality you can just enjoy while reading her. This story definitely had me laughing, and the kind of creative schemes she comes up with, and then join that up with her wit and sass...well she is a heroine you can adore.
This is a story that brings together steamy chemistry, full of life characters, enticing mystery, a enchanting mix of flavors and spices to make you hunger for more. WICKEDLY SENSUAL!!
I love when I finish a book with a huge smile on my face and a feeling of contentment - and that is exactly how I felt after reading After Dark with a Scoundrel.
Dare is a man with deep loyalty - even when that loyalty goes against his own wishes. He has troubles with his family, but everytime he is called on for help he will always eventually cave - no matter how much personal pain it causes him. He is also loyal to his friends - the Lords of Vice - and debauchery aside, is an all around good guy. He is not even a cynical man, when his past definitely could have turned him as such. That, I think, was the greatest part of this book - that Dare was not the typical hero that has forever lost trust in women due to a past betrayal. He still believes in love and lasting relationships, even though he does not necessarily believe in them for himself. However, he just cannot resist his friend Frost's little sister Regan.
Regan, of course, was a hellion, basically having been raised by the Lords of Vice until she was sent away at the age of fifteen to get polished. She has an interesting relationship with her brother, and it is a relationship that I wish Hawkins had explored more. I was never 100% sure what Frost's reasons were in sending her away to school, Regan thought it was because of a fire she accidentally caused and something that happened with Dare, as well as just plain getting her out of the way - but Dare had implied that there was another reason, and I was left a little confused by that (I probably totally overlooked something, and in the grand scheme of things the reasons did not matter for the plot). Needless to say, Regan has loved Dare since she was a young girl, and was determined to get back to London to seduce him. I loved every interaction that occurred between Regan and Dare (yes, even the non-steamy ones!) - especially when Frost was involved! I am also a huge sucker for jealous heroes, as well as heroes that just cannot stay away from the heroine.
My only complaint was that the book was too short. The ending definitely felt rushed, and there could have easily been another 25-50 pages. There had been a subplot of a woman being murdered, as well as attacks on a few of the characters, and it was all cleared up too quickly. The reader was never really given a chance to wonder about the crimes that were happening before you found out the whos and whys.
I cannot wait until the next offering in this series, and although I am pulling for either Frost's or Vane's story next (I am betting it is Vane's), no matter who's book it is I know it will be great! Highly recommended to historical romance lovers.
This one was less painful than the other NRCA books I was chosen to read, but not by much. I expected to enjoy this one far more than I did. It was a real disappointment.
I liked this book a lot. I love a best friends little sister genre romance, and it being our surlys Lords Frost, made it all the sweeter. I’m starting to really look forward to his book, lol!
We open with a young Lady Regan. Her and Her brother, an Earl, Lord Chillingsworth aka Frost were deserted by their mother after their fathers death. Regan has basically been raised by the Lords of Vice, at Nox, their gambling establishment. At 15.....she’s a beauty and our young Lord Dare, second son of a Duke and business partner of Frosts takes notice. A kiss ensues.....
Regan is immediately sent off for 5 years to finishing school. But, she’s feisty and fun, and she returns with a vengeance, her sights set on the same man, Lord Dare. It’s cat and mouse and seduction.
It’s a fun romance, with a bit of suspense surrounding Dares family and a women he once loved that married his older brother. I can say FINALLY in this book, everyone got what they justly deserved! Amen, lol. HA!
The series peaks here IMO. Decent use of some of my favourite tropes-such as best-friend's-little-sister and friends-to-lovers.
It still had a lot of issues. For one, it's pretty unbelievable that someone as volatile as Frost is about the few things he cares about in the world, would have taken Regan and Dare's sneaky HEA as lightly as he did. Yes, I get that he wants Regan to be happy always, but my God I was looking forward to a scene where Frost very silkily and calmly tells Dare they're taking this outside and then proceeds to punch his way through all his issues about his best friend shacking up with his little sister.
Also, Regan was 15 and Dare 23 when they first made out. EW. Also, how did Frost not knock the stuffing out of Dare for THAT alone?!
The only counter I have to offer is to continue maintaining that Frost is secretly the world's greatest matchmaker and knows JUST how to goad his best friends into admitting they're in love :D
Love how Dare used his sneaky rakish skills to the best of his abilities in ensuring he snuck Regan out from under Frost's nose :D
What?! So that was it? That was the ending? Thank God for the epilogue! The book isn't bad, it's just not great. It had a lot of the elements I usually enjoy very much in a romance (secret unrequited love, falling in love with a siblings friend, childhood friends, etc) but the author didn't really exploit them. We get a general view of what's happening and the events that lead up to the H and h's happily ever after, but we don't get to see what's really going on in their minds and hearts. We don't see the struggle they go through or the emotional conflicts. You don't really get to know the characters very well, so it's hard to relate to them. I, for one, can't really say I liked Regan very much. I wasn't particularly fond of Dare either, but I liked him better than Regan. The truth is I didn't really care that much if they ended up together (although you obviously know they will), and that's not what you're looking for when picking up a romance.
But I did have some issues at first. Some very disturbing things mentioned. Regan grew up with the Lords of Vice, scoundrels all of them. Ok nothing wrong there. That thing came when Dare thought back about how he stopped swimming with her at 13 cos he felt something...ok euwwww! She was 13, you were 21! I can forgive you for kissing her at 15, but that is still, ok no. I tried to put that behind me so I could enjoy the book.
She comes back at 20 and he does not recognize her at first...whatever.
She wants him, he thinks with his head in his pants and stuff obviously happens. Her brother is very whatever about the whole thing. Not a fan of her brother.
But hey, I enjoyed it... after getting over the euww parts. They have their little dance. There is drama with his family and everyone will live happily ever after.
I really expected a lot more than just good writing. There is no plot, a meh storyline and unlikable characters. The H/h are both so shallow you can't glimpse any depth in the character and it's really hard to.connect with them. Regan was meant to be fiery lady who means to attract Dare with wit and charm alas there is not one scene where any of these characteristics are shown. I dont recall any part of the book where I felt she was a lady. As for Dare he kisses her, abondons her, kisses her, goes to another lady, makes love to her (believe me I'm stretching the phrase) abandons her since he cant love her BUT he is possesive and "you are mine".Seriously!!!! As for Frost what kind of brother is that?!! This book is a no no no.
I'm not going to lie. I picked this up at Goodwill and I needed a quick read after spending time the past couple of months with some big books and big authors that require some big thought. I haven't read a regency in a long time, I finished the Virgin River series, I watched Season 1 of Bridgerton, so thought I'd give this a try.
I read it until the end. There were some overused words and phrases which I won't repeat here. I find it irritating when all people talk in insults, one-ups, and the main character sticks out their tongue instead of witty repartee. I detected no underlying themes or prose I'd want to quote. It was quick. It seemed to plod along and then introduced a lot of things in the last 30 pages or so. I had a hard time keeping the names of the Lords of Vice apart as they are all interchangeable and have nicknames like Frost, Dare, Sin, Reign, Squid, Fingers (the last two made up). It was fine.
I probably would have given this book 3.5 stars if half stars were a possibility, but I rounded down because I was really bothered by some of the story elements. For example, in the beginning Dare came across as a decent guy despite calling himself one of the Lords of Vice. He made an effort to take care of his family even after Charles and Allegra's betrayal, plus he looked after Regan to ensure that no rake took advantage of her (besides himself, anyway). Given this characterization, it didn't make sense to me that Dare would begin an affair with Regan with no qualms whatsoever. Once he decided to seduce her, he just went ahead and did it without thinking of the potential consequences (including pregnancy!) or having any second thoughts. He had to have known that she would be terribly hurt when he announced that he had no intention of marrying her, and that she would be ruined if their affair ever came to light. Considering his behavior towards his family and the fact that he considered Regan a part of it, why wouldn't Dare have taken more care with her? No matter his reasons, his behavior towards Regan was pretty awful IMO, and he didn't seem very remorseful at the end of the book. I would have liked to see him grovel a little more before Regan agreed to marry him.
Frost's reaction when he discovered Dare and Regan's affair didn't make sense to me either. Sure, Dare was one of his best friends, but I still think Frost would have done something more than throw Dare out of the house after discovering that he had ruined his sister. At the very least, I would have expected him to be a LOT more angry than he was. Also, while I understand why Frost would have told Regan that it was for the best that Dare didn't want to marry her (he thought Dare was still in love with Allegra), I'm surprised that he didn't push them to get married anyway. As a rake himself, he was a lot more understanding of their affair than most brothers would have been, but he must have known that the rules for gently bred young ladies were different than those for the young men of the ton. He told Regan that one affair wouldn't hurt her, but I don't think that's entirely true. Even if no one found out about Regan and Dare's affair right away, what if she had gone on to marry someone else? There could have been a huge scandal when her husband discovered on their wedding night that she wasn't a virgin. In those days, there were a lot of men who would not have accepted a wife who wasn't a virgin, so she still could have been ruined if her husband tried to have the marriage annulled.
Overall, despite my problems with parts of the plot, I thought this was a mostly enjoyable book. I think the first two books in the series were better, though, and I agree with the reviewers who have noted that Hawkins could have done a better job with the material. Hopefully the next book in the series will be an improvement on this one.

After Dark with a Scoundrel is the first book I have read by author, Alexandra Hawkins. It is also book three in her Lords of Vice series. Even though the book is a quick read it was well written. The storyline was good. The book is about the young Lady Regan who has been raised by her older brother and his roguish friends, known as the Lords of Vice. She is a wild and unruly young girl. Her brother sends her to a lady’s school when she is 15 out of love and fear that Regan is being influenced too much by himself and his friends, especially his dashing friend Lord Hugh Mordare, known as Dare among his peers and the ton. Five years later, Lady Regan returns to London and even though Miss Swann’s Academy for Young Ladies has taught Regan many things her schooling has not tamed all of her wildness. She is hoping to impress the ton, thwart her brother at every opportunity and most importantly she hopes to intrigue Dare. Regan has loved him since she was shipped off to school and five years was not enough time to change that. I liked this book well enough, I think I enjoyed the idea of a young girl being raised by a bunch of rouges that truly do care about her as a little sister (Well that is until she returns and has grown into a beautiful young lady). Regan is the type of heroine that is quirky, wild and innocent in many ways but she is also wickedly devious. The Lords of Vice are also very intriguing and it is easy to see the temptation that all of those men present. However, Dare’s character was not the most intriguing to me because he at times was too fickle or too impulsive. The only other thing I wasn’t impressed with about this book is the ending. I wish the ending was a little more developed and perhaps a little more intriguing to tempt me to read more of the Lord of Vice series. I will say that there were parts of this book that made me a laugh a little and I would definitely love to read the story of Regan’s older brother, Frost, but sadly after I searched that books has yet to be written. I will have to wait.
All righty, the third book in the Lord of Vices series After Dark with a Scoundrel by Alexandra Hawkins. I have to say this is my favorite so far out of the five (since there is only five at this time) and I haven't gotten to the fifth book yet.
We meet up with a precocious 15 year old Lady Regan Alice Bishop who is helping Vane in making fireworks. Well, she's not paying any attention and accidentally sets the kitchen in Nox on fire.
Lord Hugh Mordare is coming back to the club after a trying day with his family when he notices the smoke. Once he arrives he notices Regan's cover in soot from head to toe. A protective instinct takes over, and he takes her back inside to one of the parlors.
One thing leads to another, and Frost catches his sister kissing Dare. Yeah, not good at all. Then Regan is banished from London to go to a girls school. The nerve, right and over a little harmless kiss.
Five years later, Regan returns intent to seduce Dare. However, things are not going according to plan. He's taking his duty to help Frost keep an eye on Regan a little too serious, and there is a widow waiting in the wings. Will all her refinement help her win Dare or will it go up in smoke?
My Thoughts:
LOVE THIS ONE! I mean this is my favorite book out of the series, which could change with the next few books. However, I think it might be a challenge. I love the relationship between Regan and Dare. She is a challenge to him and is not afraid to make his life a living hell. Regan is no simpering miss and is willing to go after what she wants. It's possible that being sister to Frost has taught her a thing or two. So, there you go. I hope you get a chance to check out this book if it intrigues.
Well, I hope that you have fun this weekend and enjoy what your reading.
Meh. Since this book is the highest rated in this series it seems I might be done with this series. The romance was unfortunately not believable for me. Also, the editing in this book and the two before it get a bit weird. Like a chapter was suddenly cut short and the next chapter just moves on to a couple hours later, its a bit weird. And the chemistry between these two was just lacking.
I started out really enjoying this one in the series - It was very good - but I felt a little disappointed when I finished it, I was expecting certain things to happen - certain bust ups that didnt .... bust up and I felt a lot of opertunity was missed on following through with some plot twists - or going into things deeply enough.
Despite this I did still enjoy the book - there were some beautiful moments and some funny ones - the wrapping everything up at the end was extremley rushed - and I felt the threat that was lurking all the way through the book - wasn't really that much of a threat at all , and dealt with within about a 3 page section..... But still some very nice monents.
Love this series. I think this is my favorite so far. I can't wait till the next book. This is about Dare and Frost's sister, Regan. She always fancied Dare, but was too young and her brother sent her away to finishing school after a failed chemical experiment. She came back a women and Dare finally allowed himself to fall in love with her. Great story.
Probably give it 3 and a half stars. Definitely she seems to be getting better as an author - much better than her first book. Kept my interest, although his family issues detracted a bit from the love story, with his former love and then another potential love interest before he and Regan get together..
DNF at 66%. Hero was a gross, hypocritical asshole and the heroine had a personality about as exciting as drying paint. Everyone else was more or less unlikable, and their names were stupid. I was skipping paragraphs by page 50, and I just gave up
This book is great. It was what I needed. An amazing historical romance. It had ballrooms, the heros found themselves in compromising positions, a notorious gent, the ton and everything else I expect from a novel of this genre... *dreamy eyes*
We are told that Frost loves his sister but we never see it. He is completely unconcerned with what happens to her. Even when she is compromised. And Regan never shows any affection, regard or respect for her brother. She doesn't even insist for her lover to try to get his permission to marry. Her only concern is to have her own way, no matter what her brother says.
Regan never has a proper chaperone. Dare just goes and snaches her out of parties and into closets, then takes her home with him and nobody bats an eye... The one time she does have someone with her, they don't even bother to inform her that Regan is leaving.... The idea that her brother's friends are in any way proper escorts for her is ridiculous. Also, that her brother is ok with Dare continuing to live with him and his sister after Regan returns to London is quite far fetched for those times...
There are a lot of icky things in this book. Dare starts lusting after Regan when she is 12-13, kisses her when she is 15... I think there's like 10 years difference between... Her brother's friends make sexual advances towards her the moment she returns to London, but he has no problem with them escorting her to events. Her brother sees her naked in bed with her lover and looks at them with affection (??) And longing...??... Just weird...
The ending is too modern. A duke would do everything in his power to hide as much of a scandal as possible. The idea that they would report to the police that Charles could be responsible for the murder, or Allegra's attack on Regan, is preposterous. They would of course lock Allegra somewhere away in the country, under strict guard, but they would never report her attack to the police or report her as a possible murderer. Especially because of the child left behind. That girl would have been forever tainted. I love how the author completely brushes over the trauma of Louise losing both parents in such scandalous circumstances, as if she would not be impacted long term.
The idea that seven adults would call themselves the lords of vice is cringe.

This was charming and delightful because of the hero and heroine. The heroine, Regan, is a mischievous younger sister of a Lord of Vice (Frost) who grew up with the Lords of Vice and knew all about their…well, vices. And she has always been in love with Dare. At fifteen, with Dare noticing that she has become a woman, they shared a passionate kiss which promptly caused Regan to be shipped off to boarding school. Five years later, at 20, she comes back to London, supposed to be behaved lady but she’s really there to seduce Dare. Though Dare might have tried to forget the minx (sisters are off limits to the lords of vice), her return makes him realize that he has always really wanted…and loved her.
Regan’s brand of mischief is just charming. And Dare trying not to seduce her but not really trying hard enough is amusing. Every time they’re together, the chemistry is explosive. Reading these two, they’re witty, and funny, and natural, you just know that they’re supposed to be together.
Their love affair thrusts Frost (Regan’s brother and the most cynical and scary among the lords) into a good light – showing his love for his sister, and a part of him that envies what Regan and Dare have (because he is scarier in the first Lord of Vice book which I read after this).
The added mystery plot (poor Mrs. Randall, she was just a woman trying to get her own life after three years of mourning) is a plus as well.
Now this is more like it. Usually when one reads a series, it's because one enjoys the first book and hopes the series continues to meet expectations. Not so for this series. I read a short story that included the "Lords of Vice" and was intrigued and entertained. I was extremely disappointed in the first book of the series. It was so bad, I thought there were missing pages, I kept having to go back and read passages to make sure I hadn't missed something... I hadn't :( Maybe there is some blame to be laid at the feet of editors and proofreaders??... Anyway, the short story so entertained me, I decided to try book #2. I am glad I did. Now book #3 is the best so far. The story of Regan and Dare give us readers a glimpse of life with the Lords of Vice. Sassy, entertaining and even steamy at times, this was a very satisfyingly entertaining tale.
