Remember Me #2-3

The Return Part II & The Last Story

Rate this book
Shari Cooper is dead, the victim of a murderous attack. She is on the
other side, in a place of spirits. But she is given a rare offer. To
return to Earth without having to be reborn. Into the body of a
messed-up teenage girl - Jean Rodriguez. A transfer of souls, they
call it. Shari is given a chance to be a Wanderer, and to do a great
service for humanity. It is an offer she gladly accepts. Then she is
back, in a human body. Yet she does not remember being Shari Cooper.
At first she recalls nothing of the afterlife. Perhaps it is just as
well. Not everybody on Earth welcomes Wanderers. Of the few who know
of their existence, some want them dead. And others, the truly evil
ones, wish them much worse than that.

2 stars because I managed to actually finish the book.

Well. This book. I remember now why I silently vowed to myself never to read another Christopher Pike book, but I'm probably being too harsh.

This book was, in just a word, confusing. I started it - and was confused. I got to the middle - and was confused. I finished it - and was confused. Pike seems to like reusing the same mystical, almost religious elements in all his books. All I know is that the ending seemed too rushed (and reminded me way too much of Chain Letter) and the entire plot was just - egh.

Its redeeming point, to me at least, was the plot itself. It was interesting and I liked the way Pike went with it. It just could have been better.

(It also does not help that there were various passages in the book that I just skipped over - and it did not affect my progress in any way)

Would recommend to: no one actually. Most likely would tell them how the book went myself.

Shari Cooper is back and placed in the body of Jean Rodrigues, a young woman from the poor side of the Hispanic community. Knowing that she has a job to do, help and inspire humanity, she kicks her ass into gear and soon becomes a renowned author for thrillers. But all is not what it seems. Even with Peter by her side Shari takes some daring risks, is tempted by another, looks for a miracle and forgets her true goal.

My reaction after opening the first page.

Not only did I get confused, on more than one occasion, I was clearly left out of the loop that there was going to be a time skip between the first volume and the second. So when I opened the book and started reading... I had no idea what the hell was going on. I was really hoping to get to know before she carted it.

This book was a bit of a letdown to say the least. The first part, part 1, ended with almost nothing happening. Sure Shari got , but still I was hoping for a bit more.

I really wanted to see where Shari would go with her second chance. I wanted to see her strive to help the Hispanic community, to make it a better place, to help those in need and become this strong woman who did everything she could to make the world a better place, even in small ways. But I was disappointed.

The book slapped me down like a bitch.

When Shari first starts out as Jean she changes instantly. She craves to end the useless violence on the streets in her community. Drive-bys killing innocent people with stray bullets, people throwing themselves into drugs, graffiti on every wall, teenage pregnancies and believes, strongly, that the only way to clean up the streets is if they want to help themselves. I liked that. I lied that she understood that in order for their community to clean up others will need to want it as well. One person can make a difference by starting something but the only way it’s going to make an impact is if others band together.

But that all changes. In the second half of the story there is no change. It seems Shari has forgotten what Shari/Jean wanted to do, instead she writes her stories (which is great) and gathers her money, (WHOOO) and then she helps the community!

Wait... no... no she doesn’t. In fact in the second half there is only one mention of her/Jean’s family and that is at the end after . Shari’s original parents get mentioned more than that, and there is even a scene with her mother!

Peter also returned in the form of Lenny, Jean’s boyfriend. However, due to offing himself in his last life, his karma is a bit of a bitch leaving him crippled in a wheel chair. This doesn’t get him down as much as one might think. When he first returned one of the things he tried to do, or really Lenny did, was

Peter is different to Shari after returning. He focuses on people with disabilities helping them learn sports and trust themselves while searching for a Master, someone who... gives off the feeling of love... or something.... He completely trusts Shari and knows that, due to his crippled state, he can’t offer her any physical intimacy, but it doesn’t bother him in the same way that it bothers her. When Shari it’s up to Peter to help the Hispanic community and try to change it for the better.

Roger, a new guy on the scene, practically oozes sex:

Which seems to be the one thing that Shari is craving the most. I don’t blame her for that, honestly, I can’t go a week with some form of chocolate and she seemed to really like sex as much as I liked chocolate. But it becomes clear that Roger isn’t everything he says he is. After hiring the guy who solved her murder, Garret who is now a PI, Roger is clearly unstable. He has an amazing hold over Shari that relaxes her morals and makes her forget herself.

Then there is the alien story near the end. I think it was almost ruined by the fact that it was declared truth, but not future truth – past. In the past humans had spaceships and travelled the galaxy. It certain put a spin on things but was that the right move? Writing that story and then declaring it have happened? I don’t know, it hurts to think about it.

Despite these issues, I felt inspired by the take on death. A part of desperately hopes that the idea of death is a lie, that there is life after all this and that everything works out in the end.

my actual rating of this book is 3.5 stars.
I did enjoy this book, though it did take a lot longer to finish it then usual, mainly because I was reading about a chapter or two a day because of being busy in 6 form/studying. but also I wasn't as intrigued with the story as I was with the first book. also I think I may have had high exceptions after the first and because id waited a while to get it. the main point I'm saying is that its not as good as the first volume, its still interesting and fascinating but it seems to lack some of the mystery and major plot turns, mainly with the case of the killer, as we are guessing and have worked out who it is quite early in the book so its not a big surprise for the reader when we find out who it is because we already know. also I feel like she worked out who she was too early in the book (the return).
the book does have good though. it has interesting, imaginable and well written characters. and the book and plot are also well written. I liked the short story that was spread through out the book "the starlight crystal" and I think it was a good twist how it ended up being related to the real world/earth and Shari's (peter's, etc) lives. i liked the idea of how death and life after death is portrayed in the books, and how nothing really ends.
overall the book and plot were very good with interesting characters and a well-written structure. xxx

Ok I finnished this book and it was a great typical Pike thriller-style book.

I know they are pretty wierd but I can't stop reading them, his writing just has that quallity to it. It's too hard to ignore.

What annoyed me was that he had too much of a mention of his own books in there. It's a sort of twisted version of Product placement, for example, there is short story in this about an author having a troll for a muse, and at one point, the ending of The Last Vampire is mentioned, albeit vaugley.

But it was great. Don't get me wrong. It was good despite the heap of New Age belifes whch could have stuffed up the book, but it didn't. Somehow he got it all to work out in the end.

So you know, go check Pike out, if you like Sci-fi/ supernatural stuff.

I'm not sure what catagory thse books fall into. It's too hard to put one label on it.

This book is so hard to describe, it's just not your usual or typical YA read.

It continues the story of Shari Cooper, now Jean Rodriguez, and how she completes her mission.

It also includes The Last Story Part 2.

I liked the book, I was in tears at times, and the message is an important one: love is all that matters and we are here to love.

It may not be to everyone's tastes but I enjoyed it even though the writer part of me is surprised that something so different, as both books in the series are, managed to find publication. I imagine it must have been a risk for the publishers, but I'm sure the fact that Pike had published other paranormal books helped.

Definitely worth reading although I reiterate that the books may not be to everyone's tastes.

I thought it was fun, but I didn't find this book particularly good. It's well written, which is with all of Pike's books, but it didn't catch me quite as The last vampire series for example did.
I found it a bit to much new age, too woolly for my taste. Also I hated the story Shari wrote about the space ship and stuff, so I just skipped those parts.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Last Vampire series, so decided to read these also but I did find them very choppy. I enjoyed the story in the end but found it a bit difficult to follow.
