Rate this book
Americans struggle with anxiety. Among the disorder’s most common forms is social phobia, a persistent fear of scrutiny and evaluation by others. Social phobia cripples the lives of some 15 to 20 percent of the US population. This distressing social anxiety includes the fear of public speaking (stage fright), performing in social and creative situations (test anxiety, writers’ block), eating in restaurants, and dating. If you suffer from the symptoms of social anxiety disorder, this book offers clinically proven strategies to overcome them and start living a life of confidence.

Granted, when my therapist recommended this to me two years ago, I thought I had a social phobia. As time has passed between then and now, I can recognize that I didn't have at all, but still kept this book on my shelf because why not learn some more about other mental illnesses.
Well.
I learned nothing.
In the book's defense, this book was written thirty years ago, and medicine has learned ALOT since then. So while I wouldn't say it's unhelpful, the information is just dated, and newer methods and theories make this book irrelevant. And also, surprisingly, offensive. I was absolutely taken aback when this text ENCOURAGED PURPOSEFULLY misgendering others.
And in terms of the writing, it read like it was a college freshmen's first term paper in which they were to summarize the readings they did for their psychology class. I felt like I was being talked to like an infant.
While it's nice to be able to say "I can't relate to this", even if I could, I don't think I would recommend. There are so many other psychology books that are more up-to-date and relevant to today's day and age.

This book was written in 1992 and is one of the early works on anxiety. It is dated now.
