Librarian Note: There is more than one author by this name in the Goodreads data base.

Dorothy Parker was an American writer, poet and critic best known for her caustic wit, wisecracks, and sharp eye for 20th century urban foibles. From a conflicted and unhappy childhood, Parker rose to acclaim, both for her literary output in such venues as The New Yorker and as a founding member of the Algonquin Round Table. Following the breakup of the circle, Parker traveled to Hollywood to pursue screenwriting. Her successes there, including two Academy Award nominations, were curtailed as her involvement in left-wing politics led to a place on the Hollywood blacklist.
Dismissive of her own talents, she deplored her reputation as a "wisecracker." Nevertheless, her literary output and reputation for her sharp wit have endured.

Although most of these short stories appear in "The Portable Dorothy Parker", it was so much fun to re-read them. This is the first collection of Parker's stories to be released, and I can imagine that at the time they were somewhat shocking, given Parker's honesty about the lives of flappers in her time. All of the stories were interesting. I would recommend this collection to anyone who wished to read a shorter volume of Parker's writing, whereas "The Portable Dorothy Parker" is a very long book with a lot of pages. Great read!

The library copy of this book is dated 1940! Didn't know the library even kept books that long and I work in one! This is a keeper. Dorothy Parker makes me smile with her writing. She was one of a kind. This is a book of short stories, a quick read, and an enjoyable one. If you want to revisit the 1930's (the copywrite date) check it out. She'll make you think about life, and how it's changed, and how it hasn't changed!
