It's happening again!

Despite their vow to each other at the end of Once Every Never, best friends Clare and Allie once more find themselves in trouble—and travelling in time. Indulging in a low-key vacation at Glastonbury Tor, taking part in an archaeological dig while soaking up the sights of summertime England, the girls have promised each other: no time travel shenanigans; no involvement with dangerous Druids or villainous museum thieves; and definitely no weirdness about the fact that Clare is now seriously dating Milo, Allie's super-genius hottie cousin!

But when Allie makes an unexpected discovery at the dig site—a skull—the grisly artifact sends her spiralling back in time to a Roman encampment besieged by rampaging Celts. Caught between the Legions and the war band, Allie is rescued from certain death by Marcus, a young Roman soldier with a secret. As she struggles to survive in the past, Clare and Milo race desperately against time in the present to bring Allie home...before she loses her head OR her heart.

Oh my goodness!!! Really??? You can’t leave me hanging like that! That is just totally unfair! Just when everything was happening and coming to a close – BAM! – I feel like I was dropped in one of those time warps! So when is the next one coming out?? Soon I hope?

A great second read in the NEVER trilogy. I’ll admit it has been a long time since I read Once Every Never - turns out it was July 2011 and yes I had forgotten some of the book - but Lesley did a great job at throwing in relevant bits and pieces of it in this book. I usually hate it when authors do that – but it was seamless here and perfect! Brought me up to speed when I needed it!.

So what is this about? It’s a continuation of Allie and Clare’s summer in England with Clare’s aunt Maggie. They’re now off to an archaeological dig site, one that should not have any lingering magic around. Ha! Leave it to these 2 to find it and continue on their journey with time-warping and such. I don’t want to give too much away – but it’s a GREAT story! As I’d mentioned in my previous post I really enjoy authors who find a new line of stories – especially ones that I have yet to read. Going back in time, shimmering, and meeting up with historical figures – is just cool! Keep them coming

The one aspect of this book that I found really fun were the “self-conversations” both Al and Clare were having. They are in the midst of making a decision and they’re both struggling with their inner-thoughts. At one point, when Al was trying to escape and she sees Marcus in the river.. I just love her thoughts and how she struggles with what she sees and what she thinks she should be thinking or feeling. Hilarious!! But I believe a true reflection of what most 16-17 yr olds do

…and NO I’m not being biased! Yes I’ve noted in previous posts that I love Canadian authors and maybe I enjoy their works more because of that – nope not here! I just loved this story! And I’ll also admit I did NOT like how it ended – completely up in the air! Ugh!!! What happened??? I cannot wait so I really hope the 3rd installment is due out fairly soon… PLEASE!!!!

Highly recommended

"It's happening again..." Yep! It surely is! Those who enjoyed Lesley Livingston's Once Every Never will undoubtedly be in for a treat with its much anticipated sequel, Every Never After. In the first book of this series, the adventure was predominantly Clarinet (Clare) Reid's, but in the second book, it is Allie who accidentally sets in motion a time-traveling journey of her own.

Who would have thought that an innocent childhood blood ritual between friends would have such crazy consequences later in life? I bet Allie didn't when she and bestie, Clare, shared a little blood oath when they were wee lasses. The result, of which, was that they quite literally became blood sisters and fortified a blood curse that originated with Queen Boudicca and tied the girls together several centuries later to a string of time-traveling adventures way beyond their wildest dreams.

Soon after the events of Once Every Never, where Clare--with a lot of help from her friends--traveled way back in time--to the time of the Druids and Romans--to set some things right and rewrite some wrongs, and inadvertently sent the villain, Stuart Morholt, to imprisonment in the past. Not a bad thing really...he got his just rewards, right?!

All our favourites from the first book join us in the second, with a few really great new additions, but as I already mentioned, this is mainly Allie's adventure, with Clare and Milo trying to figure out a way to bring Allie back home. While experiencing Allie's bizarre journey right along with her, what I found was that the quiet, somewhat shy and self-described brainiac-nerdy-girl was actually quite fun and interesting. Her inner-dialogue very much contained Lesley's trademark snark, and now I could see why she and Clare were such good friends. Her reactions to her situations were, I think, realistic from a 17 year old's perspective. She did appreciate the predicament she was in, but every so often would find her mind drifting inappropriately at times...especially when it came to Marcus.

I can't say too much about Marcus without spoiling some of the story (although I DID accurately guess his secret) but I can say that he is the Roman soldier that Allie eventually took a liking to. She couldn't help but notice his gorgeous features even though he was somewhat mean to her at first, but it was apparent fairly early on that he was also trying to protect her from what her captors would normally do to an alleged sorceress that literally appeared in front of them out of nowhere. It took a while for both to trust each other but once they started to let their guards down, I liked what I saw happening between them. There is a scene close to the end that was just so entirely sweet and lovely and swoon-worthy that I will always remember it. Not to mention I will always have Forever Young play in my head when I think of that scene again and for some time afterwards...as was the case for me. A blast from the past!

And can I just say that Stu reminds me of the meanie magician in Frosty the Snowman? That's how I picture him to look and sound. Ha!

What I also really liked about this second book was that we got to see some things from a different perspective. Wherein with Once Every Never, the story was focused on the plight of the Celts serving under Boudicca and how they fought against the Romans who were trying to overtake their lands and basically eradicate them. But in Every Never After, we get an interesting and thought-provoking look at the side of the Romans. No...the majority were still hell-bent on dividing and conquering but we got to see there was more to it from their side, and that not ALL the Roman soldiers were ruthless and evil.

What came first...the chicken or the egg? This query pertaining to this story made my head hurt at times. I admittedly got a bit lost as some of the pieces to the time-traveling puzzle and the blood curse were being revealed. And I hate feeling lost...so I did spend some time rereading certain parts to try to get the full meaning of the latest reveals, but eventually I just learned to plow on through with just being satisfied for getting the gist of it.

But I do have to say that Lesley's stories are always chock full of adventure and fun, and Every Never After is no exception. Good, clean fun--this is a safe read for younger teens. The romance is light and sweet and the characters are full of personality and snark. Lesley cleverly inserted recaps from the previous story to tie the two books together, of which I was completely thankful. There is a pesky cliffhanger at the end too...and it pains me to have to wait a whole year to find out what happens to one of my favourite characters in this book.

I'd like to thank the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to review this installment prior to its release.

I don’t have much to say about this sequel. It wasn’t nearly as good as its predecessor. I LOVED the first book! So, yes, I was disappointed by this one. Not much of anything happens in this story. The only thing I enjoyed was the author’s witty writing which brought the characters to life and made this a light-hearted read. Needless to say I won’t be reading the third book in this series.

I like everything Lesley Livingston writes. She combines smart sassy characters with a depth of historical and mythological knowledge and time-shifting plots. In this book, her second in the series about Clarinet Reid and her sidekicks Allie and Milo and their interaction with a Druid Blood Curse they are working a summer dig at Glastonbury Tor. Things get weird, as we should expect by now, and hijinks ensue. Just a touch too much teen swooning in this one for my taste, but your mileage may vary.

My head was spinning from all the time paradoxical issues but in a good way. I loved all the surprises that kept popping up. Although the shocker at the end had me upset because Stuart Morholt sucks so hard! I can't believe he pulled that move but at the same time I can because he is such a jerkface.Ugh.

Great book though!

Another great installment in the time misadventures of two friends. I'm not sure what I loved most: the characters, the setting, or the wickedly clever pacing of the story. Can't wait for the next! Very highly recommended.

This YA fantasy series is way too much fun. Great to see Allie get some more play in this book (and I definitely mean some romantic play, too!)...but what a cliffhanger! Can't wait for book 3 to come in at the library...

Every Never After: Another Time Travel Adventure To Shimmer To

We open at Glastonbury Tor, located again somewhere in the presentish Britain, where two friends of ours are gathering at a table and chairs, awaiting some tea. It is Earl Grey of course, and is accessorized with a bowl full of custard. Off to the side is an old police box, which is really a Tardis, to those in the know.

Having settled into their seats, The Doctor wearing a fez and Hermione putting away her wand, are now pulling out their books.

The Doctor: I now call to order this meeting of the Lesley Livingston Pan-Dimensional Time Travellers Fan Club. Roll Call: The Doctor. HERE! Herm-

Hermione: You did that last time. Are you repeating yourself just to annoy me?

The Doctor: No. Yes. Maybe. Which answer would be the most fun?

Hermione: I am so thanking Dumbledore for advising me to not travel with you. Anyway, today we are discussing the second book in a series by writer Lesley Livingston, the wonderful Every Never After.

The Doctor: Yes! Lesley! She of the magical ability! We get more time travel in this story, more action, more romance, more ethical dilemmas, and more of that wacky villain who should be best left in a bag. That fellow is more of a git than the Slitheen.

Hermione: Agreed. This time Clare, Allie and Milo are on an archeological dig when another time travel adventure happens. This time it is Allie who ”shimmers” a thousand years into the past and becomes embroiled in a war.

The Doctor: And meets a cute boy! With issues! And has to navigate supernatural menaces from all around her! Quite dangerous and all that.

Hermione: You make it sound so not serious! Allie has to survive all these calamities, help out a young man coming to grips with his problems and avoid the brutal might of the invading Roman Empire. This is a lot to take in, and unlike the last time, no help from the present day is in the offing. Allie is stranded. And does not even know the universe itself is in peril.

The Doctor: Been there, done that…

Hermione: Ignoring you. I also feel for Clare and Milo, who are panicking in the here and now, trying to save Allie. It is wonderful how layers upon layers of strange plot developments fit together like a demented puzzle. Time travel can be so enthralling as well!

The Doctor: I know! I think Lesley Livingston must have been peeking at my old Time Travel 101 textbook! I understood all of it of course, and quite love how yet again that internetty thingie is used by Milo to find out how to save the day.

Hermione: I still think a good solid spell would have retrieved the valuable information. But it is good to see her friends are working vigourously to fix everything. You must have had similar adventures yourself at times Doctor?

The Doctor: Last Tuesday. And the Tuesday before that. Come to think of it, I have had a lot of Tuesdays like that. For amateurs, Allie and Clare do quite well avoiding arrows and being executed. Give them enormous credit I do.

Hermione: Agreed again. You are being so much more cordial this week Doctor! Is it the addition of the custard?

The Doctor: Custard is great! And so is Every Never After. Lesley continues to plumb into social issues galore with this series. It is gutsy to show the war from Once Every Never from the opposite side of the sword. Even through it happened a thousand years before, the geopolitics exhibited are unfortunately still very timely.

Hermione: Dumbledore has said that before as well. But the story also retains its edge of strange humour that you and Ron find interesting. The parts with the YouTube comments alone are priceless. And very accurate.

The Doctor: Yes! And I can’t wait for when YouTube becomes holographic in 2016. That is epic! But yet again Hermione, we should get going back to our respective universes. Maybe next time we can pop into Clare, Allie’s and Milo’s part of existence and give a hello.

Hermione: That would be interesting. But I have a question for you Doctor. Why did Scoop pick us to help him review these books?

The Doctor: Oh that is an easy one! To his sensibilities Lesley’s books would appeal to anyone who likes following my adventures as The Doctor and your adventures as Hermione.

Hermione: You mean in that other universe where people think we are fictional characters, just like Clare, Allie and Milo are to us?

The Doctor: Yes, that place!

Hermione and the Doctor glance up at the reader, each waving with one hand while holding Every Never After in the other. Somewhen off in the background a “shimmer’ effect is happening…

Review first appeared on my blog: Book Addict 24-7

I received a copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

Every Never After by Lesley Livingston is the sequel to the young adult historical adventure Once Every Never. Like the first in the Never series, Every Never After is full of romance, adventure, and really neat insights into what life must have been like in the ancient Roman times.

I find that Livingston's strongest writing technique is her dialogue. Witty, quick, and realistic, Clare Reid, the protagonist, is able to communicate with her readers with entertaining dialogue.

Livingston manages to translate Clare and Allie's quirky friendship into the writing. Whereas other characters in other books simply state how close they are to their friends, Clare and Allie show us what their friendship is like. Also, us being able to see that their friendship is as weird as we all believe our friendships to be makes it easier to connect with these two girls.

The men in the novel are delicious.

Okay, I'm not exactly a teenager anymore, but yum. Perfectly described using double entendres and wordplay, Livingston tackles the difficult task of creating male characters that we will love and will be impossible for her female characters to resist.

The research that must have gone into writing Every Never After is evident, since everything that we read about from the ancient Roman times is so detailed. I loved being told what something was called, not just having it be related to something I'm familiar with in this era. There is almost a careful creation of Clare's world, like Livingston wanted to get it just right.

The fact that Livingston trusts her readers to understand what she is stating makes her novel an even more interesting read.

Also, I love how ambitious this series is. Not only is this storyline set in Europe, but it goes into a time rarely explored in teen literature--which is a learning experience, in a way. Clare and Allie appear to be learning with the reader as the story progresses, so there is a connection there between the reader and Livingston's characters.

The story, however, takes a while to build up. The prose is great and entertaining, but the pacing is a bit on the slow side. I don't know if it is because I anticipated it to be as intense as the first installment, but I felt like it took too long to get into the heart of the novel.

I loved seeing the past from Allie's perspective. One of the aspects of series writing that gets to me sometimes is how limited the narrative can be. But Livingston keeps it fresh by sharing one character's spotlight with another, giving her Never series a more diverse effect.

I recommend Every Never After to readers of historical fiction in the Young Adult age group. If you like fast-paced and quirky dialogue, sassy characters, and sexy male characters, then you should probably check out this series.

Livingston creates a marvelous world that focuses on more than just war--but the paranormal beliefs of long-lost people, and the power of friendship.

Despite their vow, best friends Clare and Allie once more find themselves in trouble, and traveling through time. Indulging in a low-key vacation at Glastonbury Tor, taking part in an archeological dig while soaking up the sights of summertime England, the girls promised each other three things. No time travel shenanigans, no involvement with dangerous Druids or villainous museum thieves, and no weirdness about the fact that Clare is now dating Allie's super hot genius cousin, Milo. But when Allie makes a discovery at the dig site, the skull transports her back in time to a Roman encampment besieged by rampaging Celts. Caught between the Legions and the war band, Allie is rescued from certain death by Marcus, a young Roman soldier with a secret. As she struggles to survive in the past, Clare and Milo race against time in the present to bring her back before she loses her head or her heart.

Every Never After is a welcome return to an entertaining series with witty and intelligent characters. A return to Clare and Allie means a return to 1st century Britain with a little time travel to help them along, a return to blood magic and raging Celts and Druids, a return to complicated time streams and ingenious teen girls. But things are different now, this time it's Allie who travels back in time, and it's up to Clare to help bring her back.

Things are a lot more complicated this time around. Now Allie is trapped in the past and Clare and Milo are racing to find away to bring her back without bringing two worlds together and crashing everything into everything else. The stakes are so much higher than they were before, merely a month ago to Clare and Allie, and so much is at risk of disappearing.

It's never easy for Allie and Clare. Time is fickle, working against them along with Druid magic and villainous thieves. But what makes this book so entertaining is Allie and Clare themselves. They're passionate and sometimes foolish and headstrong, but they're smart, they're ingenious and intelligent, and they always seem to find a way to fix what was broken by a rather pompous time-traveling man.

Time travel is so complicated, so intricate and delicate. There are consequences to messing with time, there are paradoxes, and every loose thread must be tied off. Or everything Clare and Allie have done with be for naught.

With both this book and its predecessor, Lesley Livingston combines history, science fiction, and witty characters to bring readers something entertaining, cleverly disguising a possible British history lesson with a lot of action and intrigue. This book turns up the suspense, the excitement, the danger, the time travel complications, and at the end left me breathless and desperate for a third book.

If I could sum up this book in one word, I think it would be trippy.

Once again, Lesley Livingston did not disappoint in her sequel to the novel Once Every Never. So this novel continues with Clare and Allie going to Glastonbury Tor in Britain after the "Time Travel Shenanigans" for an archaeological dig. We again see Milo, and of course (My favourite) Stuart Morholt. We are also introduced to a couple of new characters, such as Roman legionnaire Marcus Donatus,Piper, and Nicholas Ashbourne.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it was lots of fun, had a fast pace, and had a very interesting plot. I loved the mystic setting of the book, since I had never heard of Glastonbury Tor before, so I found it so interesting.

Now, close to the ending of the book it was starting to get really confusing since there was the whole "in the same place but at two different time periods", but I found that the plot was carefully constructed and by the end of the book most of the puzzle pieces fit into place. I am guessing there is going to be another novel in this series, (due to the cliffhanger.) and I will definitely will be reading the next book.

Once again, I loved Stuart Morholt, and found it incredibly weird that he

So overall, I enjoyed this book, and would re-read any day! :)

‘Every Never After’ is a book filled with a zany humour that is so uniquely Lesley Livingston; it’s an energy that really can’t be described unless you’ve met Lesley and/or read one of her books before. ‘Every Never After’ is a perfect blend of geekiness and giddiness, and if you liked the first book (‘Once Every Never’) then I’m certain you’ll enjoy this one too.

‘Every Never After’ features more time monkey shenanigans, this time involving Allie, but also relating to Clare in a roundabout way. The book also contains more Milo and his adorable smarty-pants ways, as well as an introduction to a guy who is swoony in his own right. The characters are definitely a huge strength in these novels. Allie and Clare are such strong, tough heroines, but they’re also perfectly teenage girl. They’re completely intelligent and capable, but they still enjoy checking out cute guys (and who can blame them?).

‘Every Never After’ is another fun time romp from Lesley Livingston, with an ending that’s one part satisfying and one part “ack, I need the next book now!!”.

Clare is back in modern times and has been offered a chance to go on an archaeological dig at the foot of Glastonbury Tor with Allie working for a colleague of her aunt. In the course of their investigation Allie is transported to the same place and time as Clare had been in the last book and has found herself imprisoned by the Romans along with Stuart Morholt, the person Clare had left behind in the past. The people Clare and Ally have been interacting with in the present seem to be related to some of the people they interact with in the past complicating their relationships but their manner of time traveling is significantly different causing new problems as they try to determine the connections between the past and the present.

Hmmmm... This was just ok. I hate when books conveniently pair everyone off. Super-lame. So for me, the book started "good" [these books are never GOOD, but they're kinda so cheesy and stereotypical, that they're enjoyable], and then progressed into annoying. However, the last page did kinda hook me for the sequel, and since I've come this far, I might as well see it through haha

Even though we all know that in the end, they'll rescue Mark and he'll come to the present and be Allie's nerdy displaced boyfriend haha. I do like that they managed to tie him in. I figured they would at some point, considering how weird it was that he just randomly disappeared, but yeah.

Another adventure awaits in this sequel to Once Every Never. This time we have Allie taking the temporal excursion, time monkey shenanigans, shimmering, zotting (whichever time-travel term you prefer). In this book we see things more from the Romans' point-of-views. But with that surprising ending it is making me anxious. I quote the 1993 film, The Sandlot, in that "you're killing me smalls". I really want to read the next one as soon as possible to find out what happens to our fellow time travelers.

Huge SPOILER...... the ending SUCKS. I actually almost threw this book across the room, i say almost because that has only happened once due to my extreme-o love of books in general. I afterwards spent the next five minutes telling myself the last paragraph didn't happen, nope, not even, NO. It's a cute book, heavy on teenage jargon but as it is about teens I'll forgive it that. The meshing of now and then is very confusingly but well done. But the ending.... ERG.... Ms. Livingston there better be a book three or I shall harbour much anger at you!

This is one of those books where it takes me about 100 pages in to start getting into it. I love the idea of time travel and that's what attracted me to this series. It was different than Clare's experience, since this time it was more about Allie than Clare. I found some parts cute. There's many pop culture references in this book and the dialect takes some getting used to. Overall, it's a fun series and it's quite cute.

Not as good as the first one. The story itself was a lot shorter and so the plot felt a lot thinner. Having the group before them involved and the romance with her friend and nerdy roman guy (it's been a while so I can't remember names). The bad guy was kind of poorly done as is often the case in YA. And the cliffhanger was a little iffy in that it could have been longer and had a thicker story. But again still better than Wondrous Strange.

Entertaining enough. Had a couple chuckles, learnt something new with portals to boot. This second installment just lacked...substance as to plot. No seriously, what was the point?

Was this novel ACTUALLY only about Allie retaining a love interest, to debunk her third wheel position? Just wow.
Aside the few plot holes and unrealistic teenage dialogue it's a good enough read if you have nothing else to do.

But some of those puns, really. Really Lesley.

the fates are way too cruel. What is Lesley Livingston trying to do with her fans????

First, it was pretty damn obvious who Marcus Donatus was

Second, Milo and Clare's relationship. WHAT IS IT??

Anyway, overall the book was FREAKIN AMASASBDJHABFKAKSD!!!!

Except for the ending.

WHY!!!???!!!!

Allie knows that Clare is the one who has temporal adventures. At least that's what she thought until she ends in being attacked by flaming spears, screaming Scathach & rather muscle bound Romans.

Clare won't sit idle when her best friend disappears, except she kind of has to while trying to figure out what to do on this side of a time trip.

Of course, with Clare & Allie (and Milo & Aunt Maggie) time never runs in a straight line.

Although unable to get a print or ebook version of this book, I did get an audible version read by Ms. Livingston. I loved it! ...and I cannot wait for the presumably final book in the trilogy, hoping greatly that Ally's love interest will somehow be rescued. This was a fun, interesting, charming second book in the "Never" series!

Disappointed. Don't think I've read anything as YA or Middlegrade as this... from teenage jargons to inappropriate/immature thinking..... .. ughhh.
Plot got to be extremely confusing towards the end because of the time paradox. I'm still unclear of y the sacrifice was needed near the end.
Worst of all, it ended w/ a bloody cliffhanger.

Oh, great book, really enjoyed seeing these characters again, and how events from Once Ever Never affect or effect, I really don't get the differences between those 2, this book! Also, I really, really want the 3rd book now, because they were forced to leave Allie's love interest behind!!!
