There are three words to describe "Rival Demons": "Non stop action!" This story picks right up where book 4 ends. Harper escapes death by the hands of the witch coven by entering the demon realm thanks to Mary Anne, Lea and Jackson. As she and her friends try to close the portal the twin tigers manage to follow them to the other side. This of course is the start of the first battle. Harper manages to do something no one believes she could do, she kills one of the twins leaving the other in total despair.

Once they escape they begin their journey to the underground world of the demon resistance. The resistance has no love for humans and they worry that they may not gain entrance. Additionally, Mary Anne has been injured and they must obtain assistance for her that only a demon shaman can provide. Harper learns of Lea and Jackson's true identity and this is used to help them gain entrance to the city.

Mary Anne and Harper must remain behind closed doors while the official decide their fate and whether or not they will continue to assist them. Secrets will be revealed and trust will be shaken. How will all of this play out for Harper.

I truly enjoyed the demon world and how the residents slowly begin to learn about the humans recently joining their community. I also enjoyed how Harper's character has grown and she has learned to have faith in herself and abilities. She will not be detoured and she is on a mission that will take her places that she never ever believed she will go.

Once again, I loved this installment of the series and my only criticism is that since I gobbled down this edition, I will have to wait awhile for the final book. I am glad that the author has the insight to know when to end a series while it is on top. However, I do believe that a few of the other characters are interesting enough that they could merit their own spin-offs. Ms. Cannon, any comment? (smile)

This is my favourite so far!
Harper has gone her whole life not knowing the meaning to have a true family. And wham the ending was brilliant because.. She does. She just didn't know!
And what's best is who her family actually is!
Jackson and Harpers relationship breaks down because Jackson will do anything to protect her, but they survive everything and their relationship/bond just gets stronger as it builds back up!
Harper manages to contain and control her power more, and she's not all that she seems! She only learns that at the end of this book.. She's starting to fulfil her destiny!
Can't wait for the last book,
First book in the series that gained a 5 star rating from me!
So trust me its good!

This book played out like a movie within my mind's eye. You can't but help fall in love with the protagonist, a strong and independent lead, who voices doubts within herself that we can all relate to at some point in life. It's only when she embraces her strength, that we see the strength she is capable of, that surprises us all and has us asking "how was that even possible?"

I did enjoy the first few books, but I only began to feel it pick up from the fourth. In the earlier books it felt as if the story was lead by Jackson and his secrets and Harper was being driven to uncover them, to progress through the story. That was my only annoyance, especially when it was obvious he loved her and could trust her (throughout the entire series) but always used the excuse of it being for her protection, despite his knowing she'd unravel the truth and often endanger herself doing so.

I do quite like the turn of events in 'Rival Demons,' where we share in Harper's frustration, finally fed up with Jackson's secrets. After asking him the question whether he thinks she's weak and the future between the two of them when his brother is free, as well as testing her strength against a Hunter for the first time, do we finally see Jackson and everyone else stop looking at her as a meek seventeen year old that needs protection. Realising that she may very well be the only one with the strength to protect them.

She came to the decision long before meeting Lea and understanding what role they played toward undoing the council, that not all of the Order of Shadows was driven for power. It's her hope and her conviction to see her goals through; to save the Demons from slavery, to give back a stollen choice to those initiated and to put an end to the Order of Shadows once and for all, that see's me turn page after page well into the early morning.

I'm not going to spoil the end, but I can't wait to see how the story unfolds now that we know who she really is and Jackson has let his walls down.

~ Thank you Sarra Cannon for having such a beautiful imagination.

So this book was jam packed with action. Harper is really starting to learn how much power she has and how to control that power. Jackson is kinda annoying in this book if you ask me. I think Harper did a lot of growing up she is no longer that 17 year old girl who can be pushed around and have things hid from her. She is really growing up. Again we are left with a huge cliffhanger and turn of events at the end….oh boy.

Rival Demons delivered on the promises of the end of Shadow Demons and then some. This installment of the Shadow Demons Saga introduces the Shadow World, where Jackson is originally from, and brings in new characters, new situations and lots of surprising twists that kept me on my feet, as I expect from Sarra Cannon now. I love the setting, while being foreign, somewhat like our own world, and diving into the demons side of the conflict, especially after the reveals in the previous installment. I love the growth of Harper especially, as she levels up big time, but not without making a few mistakes along the way. Harper and Jackson have their rough patches in this one, and I like how it developed throughout the story. As usual, the twists at the end of the book have me itching to read the next installment as soon as possible!

how can I put into words all that I love about not only this book but the series as a whole? I would sound something like this "wow, just wow. I mean really wow. amazing" Definitely not one of my finer moments but what can I say this series has grabbed hold of me. I anxiously awaited the release of this book and have loved every minute that I spent with Jackson and Harper.
I have always felt that good writers weave stories that a reader gets wrapped up in. Sarra is one of those writers for me. She has made the story of Harper and Jackson one that has to be read. so much happens in each book. The story builds from each previous book and just when I think I know what's going to happen...BAM there's a twist. all I can say is that this book doesn't disappoint. solid writing, solid story line, solid characters...its just solid gold.
**Harper's ribbon (something I look forward to seeing in the books)**

I have been a unabashed fan girl of Sarra's since the very first book in the series, Beautiful Demons. Starring Harper, a teenage girl for who life has changed in every way, and Jackson, a boy unlike any other she has known, the Peachville High Demons series is full of twists and turns, intrigue and surprises. Harper and Jackson are, on the surface, complete opposites and this makes them fabulous characters. This new book changes their relationship, filling it full of doubt and mistrust. While I love them as a couple, this added a ton of suspense and interest to their story. I loved that Harper gained some independence in this book, came more into her own. I think this is my favorite book of them all so far. So many questions are answered, but those answers lead to so many more questions in anticipation of the next, and sadly final, book, Demons Forever. I can't wait!

Adding a review for this as I've rated it without a review.

I remember reading this as one of the first fantasy YA novels. If I reread this I am not convinced I'd be as in love with it as I was when I read this in 2014. A lot of things have happened since. 2014 Was a very hard year for myself so all the reviews are showing up on the same date. I can't explain why they are, if the ratings are justice or accurate I can also not say when I truly read these. I'm just going to say 2014 on the same day added just to keep the year right if not the month...

Ok, I feel a little better now but not really. A little better because my OCD has been satisfied and I have read the series as far as it extends. Not really because now I have to wait for the 6th (and final) book!!! That’s right, folks. We have Literary Limbo….again! However, I am not freaking out because I am patiently waiting for an e-mail back from the author with an estimated release date that I can jot down. Then I will let the countdown commence.

Anywho….

Ohmagoodness I don’t even know where to start on this one. Oh wait! Yes I do! This book is torture. Horrible torture akin to getting poked in the arm repeatedly and never getting the satisfaction of slapping the dolt doing the poking. Frustrating, right? Ummm, yeah. That is Rival Demons.

Don’t misunderstand me. I totally hearted this book. In a big way. As I said in review of Shadow Demons (book 4), this series just keeps getting better and better with each installment. Rival Demons is no exception.

Harper – she’s grown exponentially over the course of 5 books. The crazy shit from her past is a whole lot easier to deal with when she’s got some explanation. Does it fix it? Does it wipe the ‘everything she’s gone through’ slate clean? No. However, knowing her past and origins kind of gives her something to identify with. It gives her something to ground herself with. As painful as some of the things she’s finding out are, they help her grow and move past it – all of which really shows on a level that I never would have expected by the end of Rival Demons. The Harper of Beautiful Demons may be the same girl at heart but the woman she has turned into is someone that I really admire. She’s changed so much that I often find myself forgetting that she’s only supposed to be a teenager.

Jackson. I wanted to punch Jackson right in the face hole two books ago. Hard. Hard enough that he definitely would have been losing some chiclets. That was NOTHING compared to what I wanted to do to him through most of this book. Not even on the same playing field. Remember the aforementioned torture??? Yeah. That would be ALL Jackson’s fault. The benefit of having a book with a one-player point of view is that the mystery remains a mystery until the very last moment if it’s written properly. The problems with that? The mystery remains a frikkin mystery until the very last frikkin moment if it’s written properly. The frustrating part of that is a character that is very close to the main character has the answer and she can not drag it out of him no matter how hard she tries. Well, she finally does so rest assured, by the end of Rival Demons, you find out exactly what flaming porcupine has crawled intoJackson’s unmentionables and caused him to act like a jackass.

There are a few other characters that I would like to chat about but talking about them will give away some important plot points and I don’t want to ruin it. So read the series and then e-mail me (puretextuality at gmail dot com) and we can chat about it!

Rival Demons did not disappoint. This is a much more emotional installment in this series. We as the readers are now invested. Five books is a long time to put into a series. You now have an emotional connection of sorts with the characters. You feel their happiness, their sorrow, their frustrations, and their outright anger. This book was an emotional roller coaster ride. I can count at least 3 moments that made me start to cry, 3 or 4 that made me physically laugh out loud and about a 30 page span that made me want to stab someone in the eye socket.

There are at least 3 big reveals in this book that I can think of off of the top of my head and the final one is huge. Giant. Collosal. Monumental. And it is one MONSTER of a turning point in the books. Unbelieveable…. I am still floored. That big reveal is one of those “stunner” moments that I am so fond of. I finished reading this book and laid there staring at my bedroom ceiling not really sure how that could have happened without me at least picking up on it a teeny tiny bit. Incredible moment for the series.

That brings us to book 6 – which I believe is titled Demons Forever. Book 6 is not out yet. I might cry about this a little later but for now I will say that I can’t wait. I have a really good feeling about book 6 and I am super excited to see how Harper’s story wraps up. I have my crossables crossed that the author will throw me a bone and let me review it soon. Like…..oh I dont know…..NOW. No worries though, Ms. Cannon. I will wait patiently if need be.

Overall, I give Rival Demons 5 bright blue sapphire colored stars (See? You’d get that reference if you read the damn book!)!!!

Oh! And I know this is not something to base your book choices off of but it tends to be a swaying factor for me when shopping for a book. I LOVE THE COVER ART OF THIS SERIES. Simple and gorgeous. Love them.

It's rare that I get the chance or inclination to finish two books in 24 hours but once I started to read this I simply couldn't put it down. The series - now known as "Shadow Demons" - improves with every installment. This one actually started off quite excitingly and picked up the pace as it went along. It finished just as action packed, if not quite as surprisingly, as Harper finally encounters and begins to experience her true destiny. To be straight, I actually guessed the ending about a third of the way through. Just lucky, I suppose. Lucky also to have great reading experiences like this and its predecessor, "Rye Royal," which I read in one sitting on June 28th 2018. Memo to publishers: keep the excitement coming.....please!

Spoilers!

This books was so heart felt.
I felt so happy that Jackson had come to save Harper. But I hated how heartbroken Jackson made her once they made it to the Underworld.
And omg Lea is a princess and Jackson is suppose to be her mate!!!! Omg I hated both of them at that point. Why couldn't Jackson have just told Harper. It would have been a lot easier then finding out how she did.
But I'm glad they are finally able to be together.
And the ending. All I have to say is WHAT!!!!! That is crazy and insane and also wonderful.
Harper finally gets to meet her father and she's finally going to find out so much more about herself. Ahhh I can't wait till the next book.

This fifth book was really interesting. We got to see the demon world and it was awesome. The one thing I didn't like was that everyone (demon or witch) always underestimate Harper or don't take her seriously and end up keeping her in the dark which is frustrating because things would move much smoother if she just knew what the hell was going on. I did enjoy that there was more action in this book. We get to see Harper in action which was great

Spoiler:

Lea is not one of my favourite characters. I DO NOT like what's going on with her and Jackson and I hate that Jackson keeps so many secrets from Harper. It's so unnecessary. That whole King and Queen thing was so unexpected and I felt Harper's pain when I was reading it.

These books really do grip you and won't let go until the final page.

So, once harper, Jackson, lea, and Mary Anne escape into the shadow world they have to make their way to the underground. It's a safe place for refugees hiding from the order.

Once their Jackson says he can't be seen with harper and as much as I like harper this part was annoying. I guess it's the "I can't breathe without you" trope that makes me cringe already but man this got cranked up a notch.

Again, if people just talked to each other things wouldn't happen the way that they do!

On to the next book!

Finally we get more to see of the actual world and new doors open for Harper as others close.

At times the story gets very dark, gritty and challenging.

Sarra Cannon knows how to add twists to the story you do not see coming. And it felt to me like with this book she is even more coming into her own storytelling and writing. Beautiful to read.

And as always, there is a cliffhanger ending. How will it all end?

Full of intriguing twists

This series gets better and better. I could not put this book down. I am so into the characters in this story. You feel what they feel and you root for them during their journey. I highly recommend this series and not giving away the story that you will need to read for yourself. Totally love this!!

Demon politics

In this book we get to see more about the Shadow realm that Jackson is from, more of Harper's powers, and more about the human and demon politics and was going on between them. I'm really excited too because we get to see the southern realm which is kinda a spoiler but not really a spoiler because there's so much that happens in this book.

I was really bored with the first half of the book but the second half gave me all the feels and kept me wanting more more more. Still hopelessly in love with Jackson! Even though I guess the ending of this book from events in the previous book, I was still very much satisfied and I am living for this series!!!

Rival Demons is packed with action and it has many clever twists. It is well-thought-out and Harper's character development is very clear. Also, the end twist leads the series plot to a very interesting point!
It didn't keep me at the edge of my seat like the previous ones (the fight scenes were not my favorite), but I definitely enjoyed it and looking forward to reading the next one!

I absolutely loved this and the twist ending oh goodness. I melted, it's so beautiful, so tortured, so heartbreaking, but also so pleasing, exciting, mysterious and covert. I loved this book so much. This book is proof that no matter how much you enjoyed the first book, the series just keeps getting better with no plans of stopping anytime soon.

Enjoy the twists and turns!
