I don’t recall ever reading a book that takes place in the Smoky Mountains before Whisper Hollow. The author did a great job with the setting, using descriptions that brought detail to my mind without weighing down the story. Whisper Hollow has character and personality all its own. Combine the beautiful location with interesting and memorable characters during one of the country’s most defining time periods and you get the unexpected pleasure that is Whisper Hollow.

I saw this book in the Seagull Book catalog and really wanted to read it. This is the same author that wrote The Legend Of Shannonderry. I enjoy historical romance but for some reason those based around the civil war are not my favorite. Though this was a good read and I look forward to reading more from this author.

I think this is one of my favorites of this author. The first of the book is this really interesting look at this side of the United States that is so unknown to me. It reminded me of the movie Cold Mountain in it's setting and I was fascinated. These people had such a hard life and they were their own law. I can't even imagine what it was like to live there. And our main character was great! I loved her spunk and cheerfulness. The book moved well and their was always something happening. This i...more
So here is the deal with this Author, All her books are the same, they are good, just all the same, this is the 4th I have read and they have women leads, desperate with dead parents and they meet a man who is perfect and sweeps them off there feet. There is always random Men who try and attack her and then the perfect guy comes to the rescue. So this book was really predicable for me and though I have enjoyed her books I have to move on to someone else who is more versatile in her writing.
I want to say that I enjoyed this book, but there was just too much that I didn't like. As much as I like a good escape book I do have some ideas of what makes a good romance. Unfortunately this book wasn't it. The relationship between Tally and Cole was to unreal and shallow for me. I think I could have liked the rest of the book if I could have bought into their relationship. I ended up scanning several sections. Bummer because I like many Carol Warburton books.
Great story of love, sacrifice, and courage. Set during the time of the Civil War, Tally Spencer and her mother are working hard to keep their home and land from the hands of soldiers and bushwackers. All men have been pressed into service, and all food, and livestock have been taken for the soldiers as well. Tally's father is in hiding, to avoid killing men. Everything changes one night when her father comes to check up on them. Life will not be the same and the evil soldiers who came will be b...more
I'd give it a 3.5 - my main complaint is that the entire plot was on the back of the book, so I knew exactly what was going to happen before I read it. It took some of the joy out of it. I love Warburton's writing, but the plot was very similar to Before The Dawn - bad guys coming back to rape and pillage the girls. It was just in in the Smokies instead of Oregon.
I always enjoy books by Carol Warburton and look forward to each new one. She has a talent for helping you feel with her characters. I can envision the setting. This was an LDS fiction set in the southeast. Sometimes I had to re-read sentences because the dialect was hard to understand the first time through but other than that, it was a great read.
I usually LOVE her books and I'm a big fan. However, I had a hard time with this one. It was hard to get into and the language made me stop to think. I understand that some areas speak this way, but trying to figure out what they were saying could be annoying and stop the momentum. I did like this book, but I hope she doesn't do her next one like it.
I started off this book really not liking it-I was a little bored by it. But then eventually around 80 pages got into it. It's a cute story, the way they talked in the book threw me off sometimes because it was hard to understand-but it represented how they talked so I understand. It was a fun read, but definitely not one of my favorites.
I couldn't put this book down. I love how each one of Carol Warburton's books, are stories that make you feel like you are right there beside the characters. She is an amazing author!! This story is written with words used long ago here is an example: Hidey-hole or kin instead of can. If you can get passed the language you will love this story!
This book was set at the end of the Civil War in the Smoky Mountains. The historical aspects of this book were very interesting. The story was only so-so. I was pretty bored with it. I wasn't really satisfied with the "love story"/relationship. I like the two characters (Tally and Cole) okay, but I wasn't really invested in their relationship or cared if they got together. I was sad the dogs died though.
So I didn't enjoy it. The person who recommended it to me really enjoyed it though.

I did enjoy this book, it was a fun romance with a little drama. I found the dialect challenging at times simply because of the mountain talk, but even needing to re-read sentences now and then, it was fun to be transported to Whisper Hollow where the sound of dulcimers and the smell of pone cooking is a welcome treat!!
Awkward language made this hard to read.
The story was... fine. The characters were likable.
The romance was okay.
It wasn't bad,not at all. It just wasn't... great.

The story was a bit slow, but I am choosing to believe that it was done on purpose to shadow a slower pace of life during the Civil War time. The story was predictable, without anything offensive but no real depth either. I am not a big fan of books written in 'southern' so I had to take a few stars for that too.
