101 Ways to Bug... #3

101 Ways to Bug Your Friends and Enemies

Rate this book
The fun, wacky series is back and middle schoolers will love the third zany installment!

Steve "Sneeze" Wyatt is back and muddling through typical middle school experiences in an entirely atypical way. Between dodging the meathead golf team bully and puzzling out why girls have him and his friends acting so odd, everyone struggles through the throes of friendship and first love with a distinctly Cyrano de Bergerac spin. With a hilarious ensemble cast, plenty of zingy banter, and just the right amount of gross-outs, this latest in the 101 Ways series delivers exactly what fans want, and is sure to earn new ones too.

I absolutely loved the first two books in this series, having used them the past few years as novel selections for reading groups with my fifth graders. I always hoped there would be a third as I felt like a third installment would round out the series nicely. Wardlaw has created a wonderful ragtag group of outsiders in this series and their strengths and weaknesses once again play to the plot with near perfection. I loved how the climax happened at Gadabout Golf. It's a setting that resonates with so many of the characters.

I was happy to see Sneeze and Hayley's relationship grow in this series. While their crush was always a slight fixture in the first two books, this time it took centerstage. In some ways, the ardent feelings exchanged by so many of the cast feels forced, but I also realize it's partly my selfish desire to keep the cast as young kids. Their personalities play better together without the inclusion of being attracted to each other. Wardlaw changes my mind about this by the end of the book for the most part. I like what happens with Sneeze and Hiccup and their objects of desire, but the attraction between Pierre and July is completely forced and feels only included in order to give Pierre some sort of role.

While Cullen's Hawaiian heritage is a nice aspect of the book, it doesn't feel wholly necessary and is shoehorned in to add a sense of diversity.

It was interesting how the book deviated from the format of testing the different ways to bug the specific target. It doesn't suffer from this because the characters are so engaging. It is present, but only here and there to goad the plot forward.

All in all, it's a fine read and completes the series nicely. The natural inclination is to pine for a fourth book where they are in college acting out and such, but 101 Ways to Bug Your Professors and TAs seems juvenile and not true to where the characters are at the end of this book.

Be sure to check out this series from the beginning. It's wonderful to see such character growth over the three books.

In this book, there is a boy named Sneeze Wyatt. He begins to love his friend Haley but she likes a Hawaiian boy on the school's golf team. There is also a boy named Hiccup who happens to be Sneeze's best friend. Sneeze's best friend hiccups whenever he becomes stressed (which is why his name is Hiccup). Sneeze is an 8th grader who takes high school classes and is an inventor. His friends began to act super weird too. Sneeze began to write letters to Haley, but she thinks they are coming from somebody else. One day Haley writes him back and wants to meet him. Sneeze became terrified because he knew that Haley thought the letters were coming from a guy named Cullen. One day, Haley thought that she seen Cullen at a golf course. After Sneeze ruins the golf game for Cullen's golf team, he tells Haley that Cullen wasn't sending her the letters. Haley became furious and took away Sneeze's keys to the golf course. Then a few weeks later, Marcos (one of Cullen's friends) came to the place and started destroying it. Sneeze told Haley to call 911 while he went to see what was going on. The police come and take Marcos away and Sneeze gets his keys back.
When I first saw the cover for this story, I thought it would be a book that I would like to read. Although the book was somewhat enjoyable, it was very long. I did like the end when it listed 101 ways to bug your friends and enemies though. There was some interesting parts but overall it was an okay book

I love this book series, I first read this book when I was 11 and it's still a favorite of mine. The main character is a very smart and inventive high-schooler that becomes in over his head after trying to help a friend. It's a story of mini golf, bullies, and email love letters. The setting is easy to visualize and all the characters, even the lessers ones are developed well. It's a very cute, and funny story that brings me a lot of nostalgia.

This is not my favorite type of realistic fiction—middle school relationship angst. Sneeze has a crush on Haley but Haley has a crush on 17 year old Cullen. So Sneeze pretends to be Cullen through emails to make Haley happy. As you probably can tell this back fires and Haley is humiliated when she finds out.

I think it was good because it was about a guy named “sneeze”, who has a job at a golf place and he goes through many things like love, broken friendship, having people trying to “kill” him and many more.

COVER COMMENTS

The cover reminds me of some sort of self-help book you would see in an infomercial. Check out the ants too. Ha!

101 Ways To Bug Your Friends and Enemies is a must read! It is a hilarious story about middle school love. It is so funny. I was giggling frequently. My daughter kept trying to "steal" the book from me. "Hands Off!" The main character, Sneeze, is constantly coming up with crazy inventions. He makes a fool of himself around his crush who is crushing on someone else. He comes up with a plan to let her know he "loves" her but it is destined to fail. His friend, Hiccup, is obsessed with diseases. If the names don't tell you how fun this book is, I don't know what will!)

I loved the book because it had adventures, "bad guys", puppy love and pranks. This book will be a favorite with your middle schooler. This story is witty and exciting. I can't believe I have never read the other ones. I will be reading them soon! Lee totally grasped the akwardness of middle school life and wonderful and not so wonderful feelings of first love. Everything about it is believable and reminded me of my own escapades in middle school. Way to remain a kid at heart, Lee!

I received a free copy of this book for an unpaid, honest review.

101 Ways to Bug Your scholastic Inc.,
Friends and Enemies 2012

Lee Wardlaw

If you were a twelve year old kid who started high school, how would it go? Well, for a boy named "Sneeze" it didn't go so well. He finds himself running and hiding from a golf maniac who's a senior; and making friends with a Hawaiian jock who's protecting him? His crush at middle school is falling for the Hawaiian kid (Cullen Fu Hanson) who doesn't even know her name!

I like this book because it kept me wanting to read more and more of it. Another reason I liked this book is because at the end of the book there are actually 101 Ways to Bug Your Friends and Enemies!

The author, Lee Wardlaw adds a lot of mystery. He ends one chapter with a quote that leaves you hanging, then later on answers the quote.

I would recommend this book to someone who understands pidgin and likes romance a little.

Grade/interest level: 10-14
Reading level: 600
Genre: Fiction
Main Characters: Stephen, Hector, Hayley

POV: Stephen J. Wyatt

Stephen (a.k.a sneeze), main character of 101 ways to bug your friends and enemies, has a few problems once he gets back from his vacation. He finds himself having a crush on one of his best friends Haley, but she is falling head over heels for a "Handsome" new hawaiian senior that moved to their high school. 101 ways to bug your friends and enemies is a fun book with tons of humor and is a great quick-read book to grab.

1. Ace. Is. Cool. I still don't know who he's in love with, but he is just too cool for words!
2. Sneeze in this is hilarious, although sometimes misguided and questionable.
3. I'm not going to remark on the violence in this one.
4. I felt that Sneeze and Hiccup's relationship problems were a little bit silly, but that didn't affect my rating.
5. Can't wait to reread!
6. Very sad that it's only a trilogy (currently:)

This book was much better than I expected based on the title. It's cute and has lessons about being a good friend in a fun, relatable style, great for older elementary kids.

It was good and funny and it was okay that I read it before the other two books in the series.
