*4.5 stars*

One of Scotland’s most notorious criminals, Scott Paterson, is found dead in a small copse in the grounds of a leafy golf course in the suburbs of Edinburgh. His injuries are shocking, and investigators are puzzled as to how this mountain of a man could have been so easily overcome and brutally killed without any signs of defence.

On the northern most tip of Scotland at Dunnet Head, a lawyer out on an early morning run on the cliff tops, is also found dead. Turns out this guy was on his honeymoon - oh, and he just happened to secure freedom last week for Scott Paterson, in what was a very high profile criminal case.

These deaths are then linked to further murders, meaning DS Max Craigie and his colleagues have a particularly vicious serial killer to apprehend. His team are determined to catch the killer, and prevent further deaths, but how do you catch a killer that knows your every move? - and trust me the killer does know exactly what the team are doing and when they’re doing it because the killer they are looking for is one of them - a cop!

Well written, fast paced, lots of suspense and heart stopping moments, with a storyline that grips from the outset. DS Max Craigie, and his colleagues, DI Ross Fraser and DC Janie Calder provide the reader with much witty banter, which helps create a more light hearted and amusing backdrop to alleviate the seriousness of the crimes they’re dealing with.

Another cracker of a read, and an excellent addition to the series, from the talent that is Mr Neil Lancaster!

EXCERPT: There was a faint cackle of laughter behind him. The snap of a twig under a boot. Paterson froze. He turned slowly, looking into the undergrowth for the source of the noise. Something moved, came out of the dense trees, a slow-moving shadow, only just visible. He gasped, sucked in a lungful of air.

The shape approached, one arm outstretched, clutching something.

Scott Paterson cried out in terror and turned to sprint into the darkness.

He ran for his life.

MY THOUGHTS: Gritty and absorbing, Lancaster had me hooked from the outset. The Night Watch is a police procedural that doesn't stint on the suspense.

Max Craigie, Ross Fraser and Janie Calder are a tight knit team and this is reflected in their understanding of one another and the light relaxed banter between them. They are ably assisted in this case by Norma, and by Niall, an old friend of Max's from the Met, and who he brings in to work undercover.

I raced through this in a little more than twenty four hours, desperate to discover just who the vigilante was. The answer was surprising, the final expose even more so.

Neil Lancaster has written a tense, twisty addition to an already excellent Scottish crime thriller series. I can't wait for the next installment.

My thanks to HQ Digital? Neil Lancaster and Netgalley.
This is the second book of the series that I've read from this author.
Sheesh! I'm damned near stumped!
This isn't a bad story, but it is sadly lacking in any humor.
If you want a solid mystery, then here you go.
If you want heart, humor or a solid foundation of characters? Then move it along. That is lacking in these pages.
I can truly say that I will no longer be reading not promoting anything in this series.

This is an intensely dark and exciting addition to former police officer Neil Lancaster's Scottish crime series, featuring his ex-military PTSD suffering DS Max Craigie, part of the special new police Reassurance covert operations unit reporting directly to Chris Macdonald, the Chief Constable. Leith MIT, led by soon to retire DCI Donald 'Donnie' Watson, and his team, which includes DI Marnie Gray, DS John Lorimer and DS Mark Fagerson, find themselves at a golf club, a dog walker has stumbled across the strange and gruesomely murdered body of the man mountain that is gang enforcer, Scott 'The Axe' Paterson, a cold blooded execution, killed soon after being freed after a 'not proven' verdict at his court trial. There are no clues, and Watson finds himself shocked to learn that Paterson's lawyer, Fergus Grigor's broken and battered body, has been found at Dunnet Head, where he had been on honeymoon. Surely this is not a coincidence?

Freelance journalist, Shuggie Gibson receives information that the killer is a police officer, part of Leith MIT, triggering an inquiry involving Max, his foul mouthed boss, DI Ross Fraser, and DC Janie Calder, aided by the talented Norma and Barney. However, they struggle to make any progress, unsurprising given they are dealing with a vigilante police killer who is aware of every move they make. Given the pressure they are under, Max makes the decision to bring in an undercover police officer that had saved his life in London. As Max and his colleagues race against time to try and prevent further murders, they have no idea of just how ruthless the killer is. This is a twisted and dangerous case that is to test Max to his limits.

The many authentic policing details that Lancaster provides illustrate his police background, the highlight of this series for me is the characters he has created and developed, Max, Ross and Jane, along with Norma and Barney, and the relationship dynamics between them, the often bickering but affectionate banter that mark their commitment and loyalty to each other. This is a wonderful crime read, tense and suspenseful, with a number of unexpected twists, and with a thrilling nail biting finale. I have no doubt this will appeal to many fans of the series and to new readers who love the Scottish crime and thriller genre. Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC.

DS Max Craigie #3
4.5 rounded up

Scott Paterson, an eighteen stone gang enforcer for hire, is found dead on a golf course. It's a brutal, cold blooded murder as his injuries are shocking. Has Scott got his just desserts after securing a not proven verdict for murder or is it a gang land killing? Further deepening the intrigue Fergus Grigor, the advocate who secures Scott's freedom is found dead at the base of the cliffs at Dunnet Head in Caithness. Is there a serial killer at larger as evidence suggests there may be a link to a murder five years ago? The Reassurance Covert Ops of DS Max Craigie, his partner DC Janie Calder, their irascible boss DI Ross Fraser, ably assisted by Norma and Barney are tasked with an investigation.

This is yet another excellent addition to a series I rate very highly. The characters are brilliant and I love the banter between them which provides much needed light relief in a difficult inquiry which grows ever more shocking. The laughter is usually courtesy of Ross who is an absolute hoot and I'm tempted to pinch some of his more colourful expressions! Mrs F, only met in conversation, is a frequent presence as she tries to keep her husband in check with a better diet! Max is fascinating and this time the author takes us more inside his head as we get further background to explain his battles with PTSD. Max is loyal, intuitive and you'd definitely be glad he's on your side and Janie is a perfect partner for him. A big shout out too for Norma and Barney whose different skills frequently help to save the day! Barney sure thinks on his feet!

This is a rollercoaster read as the difficult investigation deepens with plenty of twists and turns as you desperately try to identify the ruthless culprits who are not only savvy but seem to be one jump ahead. The pace is fast, there is breath taking tension and suspense throughout with several jaw to the floor moments especially towards the exciting end.

One of the greatest strengths of this outstanding series (apart from the characters!) is how authentic these feel. Some former officers turn their hand to writing but this former Met detective can REALLY write and not only that he keeps you engaged throughout. Not for one moment am I bored, my attention is grabbed from the terrific start and maintained with a well thought out plot and with writing that flows. A highly recommended cracking read.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HQ for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

4.5 stars rounded up.

What a great series this is! I was thrilled to get the arc for this, book 3 of the DS Max Cragie series. The action starts with finding the body of crime enforcer, Scott Paterson, slumped against a tree in a boggy copse on a golf course only a few days after his release from remand due to no conviction. This does not mean not guilty. His throat had been slit. The cops are, however, puzzled how anyone could overpower this man mountain who exhibited no defence injuries. The next morning, Fergus Grigor is found smashed up at the bottom of a cliff. Suicide is ruled out as the man was on his honeymoon but accident also seems unlikely. It turns out he was the barrister that got Paterson released. Another of his clients who escaped justice was also killed five years ago.

DS Max Craigie’s team, the innocuous sounding Policing Standards Reassurance team whose task is actually to root out police corruption, smell a rat and Max, DC Janie Calder DI Ross Fraser and their analyst, Norma, swing into action. Snuggie Gibson, one of the more ethical journalists says a source tells him that the killer is actually in the police force. That answers a lot of questions. It reeks of vigilante justice. A suspect is identified and a sting operation planned but when they break down the door of this suspect they are too late. He is dead in the bathtub - another apparent suicide. But Max is having none of it. Somehow they will prove it was murder and they WILL catch the perpetrator!

From there the pace moves rapidly, the chase is on. Max calls in one of his buddies from the London Met, Niall, to do a bit of undercover work and he is planted into the Major Incident Team with a solid backstory.

This was a fast paced, tautly plotted story with very relatable characters. We learn more about Max’s background and the ghosts he still harbours from his stint in Afghanistan. Norma is such a great addition to the team, if the information exists she will find it. Jane is a loyal team member with mad fighting skills which come in very useful at the end of the book. A highlight of this series is the dialogue, particularly that of Ross. It had me laughing out loud at times. The Scots do swearing so very well. The writing is excellent and comes across as very authentic.

This one came down to a nail biting, jaw dropping finale with a major twist. I can’t wait to read the next book! Many thanks to Netgalley and HQ for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

Watch Your Back.

The Night Watch is the third installment of the Max Craigie series.

I’ve read all three now - in order no less - and a partial lure is the liberal use of Scottish vernacular and witty dialog. I’m happy to note that the salty humor is back in top form as I felt that it had dipped a bit in the second book.

One of the sources of mirth being the tireless complaints of Max Craigie’s curmudgeon boss DI Ross Fraser - about his wife Mrs. F and home life in particular.

The ice has melted in the frosty relationship between the two and Mrs. F has returned to the family home. She’s now on a mission and a one sided comedic exchange results as we’re informed by Ross of her efforts to prolong his longevity - through dietary changes.

I’m laughing just thinking about it.

We’ve never met Mrs F in person, but she’s as prominent as any of the other characters and equally unique.

If you like police procedurals, a beautiful Scottish setting, and bouts with drollery, this series may be for you!

The Night Watch follows DS Max Craigie as he tries to solve the mystery of several interlinked deaths and find the identity of the vigilante serial killer. Soon, he realizes that the serial killer is not someone on the outside, but someone on the investigation team. Will Max be able to stop the killer before he strikes again?

𝗠𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀.
To start with, I loved the blurb and the general setting of the plot. But, the Scottish-English accent made it difficult to read the book and the writing style was very obstructive.

Things were repetitive and fact-like. It felt like I was sitting inside a police station or a forensic lab, listening to their conversations. There were so many technical dialogues that took up space in the story🙄

Even though this book can be read as a standalone novel, it is a part of a series and I think not reading the first books made it really difficult for me to connect with the characters. And so, I'll give this aspect a benefit of the doubt..

The mystery part of the book was veryy disappointing. The angle of the serial killer being a cop on the investigation team was such an interesting concept but it was taken in a weird direction. Plus, the plot was predictable and that ending had me rolling my eyes out.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.
Overall, this was an okayish one-time read that fails to give an exciting murder mystery and to which, I'll give a benefit of doubt as the experience might have been different if I had read the previous books🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks to HQ Digital, Neil Lancaster and NetGalley for the e-book in exchange for an honest review.

P.S. I still don't know why the name is The Night Watch 👀

The man left his new wife early in the morning for a run, before they breakfasted together. But he didn't return. Dunnet Head on Scotland's northern most tip was where his body was found, but when DS Max Craigie heard of this latest death after the death of a newly released prisoner - not enough evidence - he knew they were linked. Somebody out there was killing criminals who'd evaded the law - a vigilante serial killer was among them.

As Max, Janie, Norma and Ross once again joined forces to find the perpetrator, they were horrified at everything pointing toward one of their own. More killings followed and Max knew they needed their wits about them; needed the skills of those who were better than anyone else in the force. But could they do it? This killer was meticulous...

The Night Watch is the 3rd in the DS Max Craigie series by Neil Lancaster and it was brilliant! I am SO glad I discovered this author; he's one of the best I've read in a long time and I'd put him up there with Peter May. Max Craigie is ex-military, out of Iran and Afghanistan and has his demons. But it's also given him an edge which he uses well. I'm looking forward to #4 soon. Highly recommended.

The Night Watch by Neil Lancaster is a very interesting and intense police procedural. Lancaster served on the police force for over twenty-five years. His expertise in writing crime fiction shines through in the intricate details of the plot. Each character is a potential suspect leaving readers scrambling to figure out this twisty whodunit.

Synopsis:
A lawyer is found dead on a lonely clifftop. His murder is quickly linked to other recent murders, including one involving his most recent client. DS Max Craigie is called to help solve the mysterious cases. The police fear there may be a serial killer on the loose. Can Max and his team solve the crimes before someone else dies?

The Night Watch is book #3 in the DS Max Craigie series based in Scotland. Although I read the book as a standalone, I feel I would have had a better understanding if I had read the previous books first. There are multiple characters in the storyline. Without knowing their history, I had trouble figuring out who was who. It is not the authors' fault that I read the books out of order. My overall score does not reflect this.

The Night Watch by Neil Lancaster is available on September 8th. (4.25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫)

Thank you, NetGalley and HQ Digital (HQ), for sharing this e-book with me. Your kindness is appreciated.

Briefly - Another decent pacey crime read in this series.

I really liked the opening two chapters of this. It introduces two very disconcerted people who maybe haven't survived. Nothing like a high octane start to grab you immediately. This is the third outing for DS Max Craigie and I have read and enjoyed the previous two. They were along the general approach of Line of Duty - the investigation of corrupt cops. This one moves focus somewhat and is about someone who is trying to get what they see as justice in crimes that have been judged as "not proven" in terms of Scottish Law. It quickly seems likely that the perpetrator may be linked with the investigative team!

The case is very twisty and fast paced. There are some red herrings laid out for inspection. Or are they red herrings!! I confess that I did spot some aspects of this case in advance but not the ending. I guess that, three books in, this isn't as "fresh" as it was. The characters - generally very good - are mostly the same and Max remains an excellent character. The overall background of the book with Max's team as a "secret" group is much the same. This one does stretch things somewhat (as you will find out at the end) however it is cut from the same cloth as the earlier ones and that is not a complaint. Do start on the first book if you are new to this series.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this read. As I've said it has pace, tension, some good twist and good characters. I will just mention that Ross (Max's boss) is not my favourite character and that was the same in the previous book. He is particular "type" which I'm not that keen on however that is probably my only real reservation about this book. I would be very surprised if I didn't read book four when it comes out. Easy enough reading and satisfying too. 4.5/5

Note - I received an advance digital copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair review

This is the third of the DS Max Craigie series; it is the second I have read.
A noted gang enforcer for hire whose case was “not proven”in court is found dead, as his attorney. A tip to a journalist ties these murders to others and the possibility of the involvement of someone within the police department. Craigie and his team investigate the department as well as try to find the serial killer.

Gritty, fast paced, engrossing, this is a solid police procedural, ringing true not only in the actions of the characters but also their camaraderie and their friendly mockery of each other. For added enjoyment, there are some very colorful Scottish expressions.

Although this further develops the characters introduced in the prior novels, I think it can work well as a standalone.

Many thanks to HQ and to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of The Night Watch!

I have to say that I reeeally like this series!! And, The Night Watch was quite the nail-biter to read!! The team, set in Scotland, is made up of Ross, Max, Janie, Norma, and Barney, and they are looking for the murderer of a notorious criminal recently released from prison. One thing lead to another and another until the twists and turns had me gasping!! The pace of the book was FAST. I loved the banter between Max and Janie and not only because those moments gave me a chance to breathe, but because those two are genuinely funny! Also, I was glad Aunt Elspeth had her moment to shine.

I definitely recommend The Night Watch (and the DS Max Craigie Series, for that matter) to anyone who loves a solid police procedural!!

the Night Watch: the last bastion

An acquitted murderer and gangland enforcer, Scott “The Axe” Paterson is found with his throat cut. His legal advocate happens to fall off a windy cliff during a run. Coincidence or something more sinister? The Police Standing Reassurance team, an interesting misnomer for a select team who report directly to the Chief Constable of Scotland, is asked to investigate. Detective Max Craigie and his crew suddenly have their hands full. Is it possible there’s a serial killer at large?
A police procedural that has an ending that’s as twisted as the deaths.

As much as I wanted to find out what happened, I struggled too hard with Lancaster's writing style to finish. There are too many info dumps about character background, the dialogue is clunky and fails to achieve the camaraderie the author was aiming for, and too many pages have nothing to move the plot or character forwards. DS Max Craigie was interesting in a damaged but clever kind of way but not nearly enough time is spent with him. I soon found myself skipping pages and that was the death knell. I decided to move on to better things.

Perhaps this author's writing will work for you, but for me it's a no.

DS Max Craigie is an ex-military who served in Afghanistan. He is now working for the Scottish Police Service as part of the new police Standards Reassurance covert operations unit after leaving the London Met under a cloud. The team report directly to the Chief Constable of Scotland. Max, DI Ross Fraser, DC Janie Calder, and their analyst, Norma, act on the information gained from Shuggie Gibson – a journalist after a dog walker stumbles across the gruesomely murdered body of a man. He is gang enforcer, Scott 'The Axe' Paterson, killed soon after being freed from Saughton Jail, following a court trial.

This is an amazing and riveting crime thriller with fantastic characterisation and it blew me away. The author certainly has a talent for blindsiding twists and deviously complex characters. In a multilayered story Neil Lancaster expertly shows off his skill the reader is treated to a wonderfully oppressive, fast-paced thriller. The tale incorporates danger, ruthlessness, revenge and brutality, all culminating in an unpredictable hold-your-breath ending. I was hooked from the opening chapter and mesmerised throughout. I recommend The Night Watch very highly. Roll on book four!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from HQ Digital via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

A notorious criminal is released after his trial returned a 'not proven' verdict but found dead in woods beside a golf course. A Dunnet Head a man on his honeymoon is found at the base of a cliff, he just happens to be the lawyer who was defending the criminal. It looks like the police might have a vigilante on their hands. Max Craigie, Ross & Janey need to discover who is the killer in their midst.

This is the third book in this series & it was as enjoyable as the previous two. The main characters have become old friends by now & I love the interactions between them. I also like the setting of the books as they frequently refer to places I know quite well which adds to my enjoyment of the books. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book. I'm already looking forward to the next one!

Another brilliant book in this gripping crime series.
Max, Janie and Barney are once again trying to find a Detective who is taking the law into their own hands. Overseen by Ross, who is as grumpy as ever, they have their hands full with this one.
Max gets his friend from London to help out as well and it’s soon clear there are many strands to this case.
I love the way we follow Max and the team and know about the surveillance in place to catch the corrupt Detectives.
This is a great crime thriller with a few nail biting moments to keep you on your toes.

The Night Watch is a killer concept, an unflinching look at generational trauma and the mind’s reaction. Suffused with menace…it’s bloody brilliant.

To follow a series with a sense of abandonment there have to be certain elements that scream to them. The X factor – something that keeps them coming back for more, the DS Max Craigie series is no exception. Travelling the pages is like walking a tightrope, danger threatens to knock the characters askew. There are so many elements that just make this series work – flawed characters. The realism of human nature. Betrayal. Raw storytelling.

Neil Lancaster’s storytelling is like no one else. The police procedural should be tackled with a finesse that only a few authors can pull off with any sense of realism. Lancaster does just that. As an ex Police Officer, you are transported into the seedy world of criminal activity, and the work that goes into bringing that person to justice. It’s a team effort and you get a feel for that in The Night Watch.

Some stories start with a feather falling from the sky, The Night Watch starts with a barrel of powder exploding in your face. Hardened crime enforcer, Scott Paterson is found slumped against a tree with his throat slit on the grounds of a golf club. He had just been released from remand on a not proven charge so he was feeling quite jolly with himself until of course he met his end. The police are in the difficult position of trying to fathom just who could overpower him – a man mountain weighing around 18 stone wouldn’t just comply if you asked nicely. There’s just one small coincidence – Fergus Grigor has turned up dead at the bottom of a cliff at Dunnet Head (loved how we had a connection to Caithness and Sutherland. As a Golspie girl it was great to have those vivid images of Dunnet,) He was the Solicitor that got Paterson released so it all smells a touch rank.

DS Max Craigie and his team, Policing Standards Reassurance Team, sniff and stamp out police corruption. DI Ross Fraser, DC Janie Calder, and their analyst, Norma, act on the information gained from Shuggie Gibson – a Journalist with grit, determination, and an ethos for doing the right thing. He informs Craigie and his team that the killer is a Police Officer. He doesn’t need to question this information too far – a taser, the nature of the victims, and the killing itself scream a vigilante on a mission.

The Night Watch also examines the humanity of these incredible characters We see the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and how it manifests itself. There are so many layers to this story that just left the reader feeling completely immersed in the case. A fly on the wall, we get to experience the nuances of human action and reaction. It was perfect *insert chef’s kiss*

4.5 / 5

Now this is my cup of tea book, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and the journey I went on this one. This book tickled all the right boxes, it was almost like a movie being played out. I struggled to drop this book down for sure, I was glued to the pages through the easy writing and consistent pacing. The ending was something I did not imagine, and I was horribly wrong on who the culprit was, which left me thoroughly surprised.

Although this is the first book I’ve read out of the two previous books I felt like this can be read as a stand-alone (kind of). I definitely will be keeping my eye out on the fourth installation following DS Max Craigie, DC Jane Calder and DI Ross Fraser. Having spent five years studying in Edinburgh/Scotland this book reminded me of my time and how much I enjoyed my experience living there, with all the Scottish banter - the good ole times.

I must say the paperback version of the book made my reading experienced even better. The quality but also the typeface/font of the writing made it easier to read. Definitely recommend this book to those that enjoy the whole police/ detective case with a well built team of characters with action, suspense build up and unexpected twists.

3.5 stars rounded up.

While this book isn’t bad at all, it does feel slightly underwhelming compared to the others in the series. Having enjoyed the previous instalments, I found myself hoping for a bit more depth and excitement in this one. Despite this slight disappointment, I still found pleasure in the storytelling and characters, but I couldn’t shake the longing for a more captivating experience.

DS Max Craigie and his wife Katie are entertaining, their friends from when he was in the Met is visiting, the memories are, for the most part, good and everyone is content. His partner, DC Janie Calder is also there so when his phone pings on a Sunday afternoon they know their relaxation is over.

The man, whose body was discovered on a local golf course, was known to Max and his team but the case is worked by MIT 6. Something doesn't add up however, and when a second death is linked to the first, everyone begins to consider whether a serial killer is at large. Max finds himself, as usual, working covertly to prove or disprove the possibility of internal involvement in the deaths and discover any agenda being followed. Their killer, whoever they are, has no problem eliminating anyone who gets in their way but backing off isn't an option and before long Max and those he holds close find themselves in the murderer's sights.

Once again Neil Lancaster has written an absolute blinder. It starts off at a furious pace and doesn't let up. The investigation is compelling, the action exciting and is heart racingly furious in places. The gallows humour present in the previous books is woven in seamlessly throughout and I loved it. The reasons for the killings and the identity of the perp aren't at all simple to unravel with twists, turns, and discoveries throughout but as the end hurtled towards Max so did the danger and I found myself anxious to finish but not wanting it to end.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a first class read and easy to recommend alongside the first two books in this series.

Another fantastically gripping thriller from this author!

When a lawyer dies on the cliffs at Dunnet Head, the most northernly tip of of Scotland, it is quickly connected to the death of others – including his last client. DS Max Craigie and his team are called in to find out what’s going on and, more importantly, who’s behind it. Being forensically aware, the killer has left little in the way of clues but Max, Ross and Janie get to work; puzzling though it is, they are old hands at solving the unsolvable!

I particularly love learning something from a book and the forensic details in this one had me mesmerised- if I ever decide to turn to crime (highly unlikely, if not impossible) I reckon I’ve amassed enough knowledge to avoid detection! I missed the first in series, but have it tucked away ready to read sooner rather than later. This novel is packed with details of the investigating team and yet it concentrates solely on the case in hand. Neil Lancaster knows how to tell a tale keeping his readers on the edge of their seat. I was constantly being surprised and NEVER would have guessed who was behind it all! Pulsing with tension and absolutely thrilling from beginning to end, this is fully deserving of all five sparkling stars and my highest recommendation.

I would like to thank Netgalley and HQ for an advance copy of The Night Watch, the third novel to feature DS Max Craigie of Police Scotland’s Policing Standards Reassurance Team.

Scott Paterson, a violent criminal who recently walked free from a murder charge in a not proven verdict, is found murdered on an Edinburgh golf course. The same day the lawyer who got him off is found dead at the foot of a cliff. Max Craigie thinks that they are hunting a vigilante serial killer and when he is given anonymous information he thinks that the killer might be a police officer.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Night Watch, which has a bit of everything and kept me turning the pages to see what was coming next. It is mostly told from the investigative point of view with the odd interjection from the initially unidentified other side, but that changes quickly when the team develop a prime suspect. This happens in the first third of the book, so it’s quite a deviation from the standard police procedural format, and the novel becomes a surveillance and tactics operation, until it doesn’t and the hunt is on again.

That gives the reader mystery, investigation and cat and mouse quickly followed by twists, tension, uncertainty and a fair amount of technology (nothing too difficult to follow, but eye opening in what can be done). It has a great story too, compulsive and not easy to guess - I got some details right, but mostly I missed. Lastly, it made me laugh (lots). It is Scottish in the humour and vernacular, so it might not suit all readers, but for me it was great.

The Night Watch is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

I had read the first two books in the series previously and had been looking forward to this, the third outing for DS Max Craigie, it definitely didn't disappoint.
The plot of a vigilante killer police officer was very cleverly done, with plenty of twists, making things more complex and higher stakes for the team. Especially as Max enlisted the help of his friend from the Met, Niall.
The characters were well written and I was emotionally invested in there being a good outcome for Max and his team, concerned on the impact certain events could have on his PTSD. The humour and camaraderie within the team gave light to the often dark nature of the story, I do have a soft spot for Ross (Max's boss) and Barney (ex-spook, turned surveillance expert).
Highly recommended reading, looking forward to the next book.
With thanks to the Pigeonhole and the author for the opportunity.

January 2024 update: This was a "re-enjoyment" after originally reading as an ARC. As ever Neil has created an intriguing crime for Max Craigie and the team to investigate. Angus King does a great job again bringing his characters to life with various voices for each character. Also added to the action scenes having them dramatised. Looking forward to reading/listening to future books in series.

I’m really enjoying this series, I’m invested in the characters and I think they’re really well written.
They’re all based on the anti corruption team, this one involves a vigilante police officer who is going round killing anyone who has managed to evade justice, it’s fast paced, it is a little bit far fetched but still plausible and I loved it
