James Lansdale Hodson was a well-known figure in journalism, having a spell as the northern editor of the Daily Mail and writing on a wide range of subjects while working for the Kemsley Group of newspapers.

He was mainly based in London, but did a lot of work for the Sheffield Telegraph, and when he came to write fiction he was often associated with Sheffield through his novels, most notably 'English Family'. Indeed, the manuscript of this novel was presented to the Sheffield City Libraries.

His links with Sheffield were established through his brother, A.E. Hodson, who moved to Sheffield as a young man and became a superintendent at Metropolitan Vickers in the city's East End.
