A Modest Proposal (that doesn't actually involve eating anyone)

I was on a flight home last night, and I thought,
You know, there aren't enough traditions that involve giving books.
There's World Book Day, which grew out of Don Quixote Day/Cervantes Birthday/St George's Day in Spain, where roses and books are given, but really, we need some more instant traditions that involve the giving of books, the kind that spread all over the world.
And then I thought,
Hallowe'en's next weekend...
So:
I propose that, on Hallowe'en or during the week of Hallowe'en, we give each other scary books. Give children scary books they'll like and can handle. Give adults scary books they'll enjoy.
I propose that stories by authors like John Bellairs and Stephen King and Arthur Machen and Ramsey Campbell and M R James and Lisa Tuttle and Peter Straub and Daphne Du Maurier and Clive Barker and a hundred hundred others change hands -- new books or old or second-hand, beloved books or unknown. Give someone a scary book for Hallowe'en. Make their flesh creep...
Give a scary book.
If you don't know what kinds of books there are, or what would be appropriate for the person you're giving a book to, talk to a bookseller. They love to help, most of them. (The ones that don't tend not to be booksellers for long.)
That's it. That's my idea.
Scary book. Hallowe'en.
Who's with me?

Neil

(And for those of you who protest that, honestly, you need no excuse to give books as gifts, and you do it all the time, and it comes to you as naturally as breathing -- well, that's wonderful, and I'm glad. Think of this as your chance to spread books to people to whom you might not normally give books, or to receive books you might otherwise never read.)

(And for those of you who think that it's not proper blog post unless it has Dog Photos: Here are four photos by the Birdchick from today: one of Cabal, two of Lola, and one she took of me down by the beehives getting silly with the smoker.)

Sarah Love it!!!! Really smart idea Neil! I'm so with you there!

message 2: by Neil (new)

Neil Thank you! Let's spread it around Goodreads too...

message 3: by Mel (new)

Mel That's actually a really good idea! I'm definitely doing this.

Red Neil,
There is a Latin tradition, Mexican, to celebrate "Day of the Children." My library, and surrounding libraries in California, have adopted and customized this idea and made it "Day of the Children/Day of books." The day is celebrated on April 30th. And on that day the libraries, which can afford to join in the festivities, make a fair-like celebration and hand out free books to all the children; along with games, crafts and story times. It is a neat festivity, and what better gift than a book! :D
Giving scary books for Halloween sounds like an excellent idea! I am most definitely with you on that! And a few glow in the dark, rubber spider rings too, of course. ^^

Zuzana Urbanek With you all the way!

Great idea (though I am certainly one of those for whom giving books is like breathing), and THANK YOU for the new pics of Cabal and Lola!

Happy Halloween!

Gareth Mottram Good plan. We need to get the greetings card companies interested - they could link card+book deals in WH Smiths, Borders etc... The likes of Clinton Cards (UK) are always pretty keen on picking up on reasons to sell cards (Happy Grandma's Day etc)

message 7: by Noah (new)

Noah Did you know my dad is exactly one year younger than you amazing right?

Zuzana Urbanek Sarah wrote: "That's an incredible idea. I'm a little poor and don't own many scary stories though, so I might attempt to write one for a friend of mine instead! I hope that's allowed! That's if I can't find a g..."

Oh my gosh, that's a terrific alternate idea, and very personal! :)

rudderjhane yEpPpPpeYyYYYYYY! Perfect idea Neil...Hmmm I'm quiet far. It's super cool and I really do and share your idea in Taiwan hahaha...but I was thinkin' I could choose the books and create scary stuff on bookmarks, so the person will still read the book:)

message 10: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret Sure, we could do all sorts of holiday co-ordinated book gifting. We could give people books about love on Valentine's Day, books about Ireland on Saint Patrick's Day, funny/satiric books on April Fool's Day, books about mothers or fathers on their respective days, books dealing with labor struggles on Labor Day...I could go on.

message 11: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Hensley Well, I'm on board. And I'm sure any major dental hygiene association would be as well... You know if it cut down on candy consumption.

message 12: by Zuzana (new)

Zuzana Urbanek BTW, cool picture by the beehives ... you look like a wizard materializing. :D

message 13: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I like it!

message 14: by Tamsen (new)

Tamsen Love, love this idea. My book club does a book swap every December for the holidays, and I love the idea of a scary-book swap for Halloween. :)

message 15: by Kristina (new)

Kristina Terrific idea! I get a new book of scary stories for myself every year for Halloween but have never given one away. I like new traditions (especially if it involves books)!

message 16: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Gwendolyn wrote: "I'd could see scary mini-books, the size of a deck of cards or smaller, being a hit for Halloween. They could be sold in bags just like candy and for a similar price, but would be a much better treat."
This is a great idea. My family discussed something similar on the way to work. We thought some of the classics even, like The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

message 17: by Bondama (new)

Bondama ----Or a Wizard trying desperately to avoid the mist!

message 18: by Kristi (new)

Kristi I'm an avid book gifter, and I have already purchased your "The Dangerous Alphabet" for my girls' Halloween bag. That surely counts. :)

message 19: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Sounds like a great book! I'll look it up.

message 20: by Missy (new)

Missy I have just ordered 4 books to distribute on this the first all-hallows-read.
What a great idea this is!

message 21: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret I just convinced the librarian at the school where I volunteer to order The Graveyard Book. Does that count?

message 22: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Such a great idea. I think I'll put in a request at our school library.

message 23: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Wright OK, so I missed the Halloween book idea by a few days... but it's never too late! I'm still going to do it. You can never go wrong with book giving!

message 24: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Of Questionable Luck It's true, we DON'T have enough holidays involving book-giving.
This is a great idea!
I'm not sure how I'd be able to give someone a "scary" book, though, seeing as books never scare me.
Well, all except "The Marbury Lens".
But now I'd have to wait til next year....

Kristi Shomeret wrote: "I just convinced the librarian at the school where I volunteer to order The Graveyard Book. Does that count?"

I loved that book! It totally counts.

I agree! A positive look at things that go bump in the night!

message 27: by Kristin (new)

Kristin Oh my gosh, I love it! This is a tremendous idea that makes me feel like a kid in a Halloween costume at school again. Let's start with "Tailypo" told by Joanna Galdone. Yes......!

message 28: by Bondama (new)

Bondama I missed it last year, but this year I gave a copy of "The Strain" by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan to a friend of mine on the 31st!! I also contributed to good scary books to my local library..

message 29: by Kristi (new)

Kristi Can we talk about this again?

After all, Halloween is just around the corner...any new suggestions for spooky book-giving?
