When an Alpha Is Marked by One of His Own Kind [当Alpha被同类标记后]

Rate this book
Within the industry, everyone knew Team DG’s captain Lu Zhe and Team BLX’s top laner Shen Qiao didn’t get along. They said it was due to hormones. They said it was a basic AA incompatibility.

Lu Zhe once said of Shen Qiao: “Obsessed with kills. Lone wolf.”

With a cold smile, Shen Qiao said of Lu Zhe: “Command’s mediocre. Shitty jungler.”

But then…

When Team DG, champions of the last tournament season, stumbled during the Spring Tournament and fell during the semifinals, someone cut through the furious cursing and swearing that had consumed the internet and leaked the news—

Shen Qiao was going to be traded. He was joining Team DG.

When that news came out, the internet roared.

Did Shen Qiao and Lu Zhe fight today?

On esports forums, trolls and haters placed their bets. It was endless, until Team DG won its second world championship crown.

Half a month after the tournament.

The players of Team DG hosted a livestream: “The lodgings were awful. Captain and Qiaoqiao had to share a room. Aren’t we pitiful?”

Shen Qiao, sitting next to the monitor, glanced over through hooded eyes. He caught a glimpse of a bullet comment and echoed it out loud: “Did we fight?”

He lifted a hand to his neck. “We fought.”

Lu Zhe approached with a cup of black tea. Just in time to see Shen Qiao touch the bite mark on his throat. He added:

“We even broke the bed.”

This story was charming but still had a lot of flaws. What got me hooked was the MC Shen Qiao (I haven’t checked the hanzi but my guess is that’s not the same as Thousand Autumns’ Shen Qiao) who was enough of a mystery for me to get to know him better. That he and the ML Lu Zhe were Alphas was a fun addition to the story. Though I must admit that a/b/o stories will never become my favourite.

Lu Zhe was on one hand a ML too good to be true and on the other hand too cocky for me to like him wholeheartedly. But let’s be honest, I enjoyed this story precisely because it felt like a soap opera to me and I didn’t have to think too much about the sometimes off key logic of the plot, the endless descriptions of how they looked each other in the eyes (for real, the descriptions of each other’s eyes were as flowery as a flower shop) and the oftentimes weird games shown.

It was obvious that the author loved League of Legends to pieces but they weren’t able to transfer their love into writing great game settings. I think in part it was due to one thing: They usually used the game characters but rarely used the players name adding to that. So instead of Shen Qiao’s Kennen it was just Kennen. They told the line up of both teams once but then assumed the reader was able to keep those ten names straight for each game. Now imagine that happening over all the games with varying game styles and chosen game characters. If you look at game descriptions in ICDI or in FOG (which doesn’t use LoL) you’ll get repeatedly told whose character plays whom and you don’t lose track of what is supposed to happen and who is fighting whom. Here I was often confused in the beginning and by the end I just tried to keep track of the MC and ML’s game characters. That worked for me but it definitely made the game sequences less pleasant to read.

All in all this story entertained me enough but it wasn’t a great e-sports danmei.

P.S.: But the cover is gorgeous. 😂

E-sports. Omegaverse. Trauma.
A generous 2.5⭐ for it had potential with the backstory of abuse and trauma, but the plot seemed to have just slipped through the author's fingers. If you're looking for a good E-sports novel, this is not it.

This novel was quite long at over 1000 pages but it was an easy read. Although I don't play LoL, I had some grasp about the game so it wasn't too difficult to imagine how the battles played out but still, I found myself sometimes just reading the descriptions with nothing going on in my head. I was just reading words without comprehending them, but I still thought it was kind of fun.

I liked the characters too; Shen Qiao (MC) and Lu Zhe (ML) had a complicated past but luckily they were both mature for their age and they got together without having to go through any unnecessary drama or misunderstandings. I liked the development of their relationship and how it was an unconventional relationship in an ABO setting. It's rare to see an Alpha X Alpha pairing so I thought that was refreshing. I also thought it was sweet how they truly loved each other, how they never once stopped loving each other. The supporting characters were really fun and they brought a lot of humour to the story but they didn't have much character development, if at all. In fact, SQ and LZ didn't experience much character growth as well apart from some small aspects, so they felt, to me, a little bit one-dimensional.

I liked the ending though and how the author gave us a glimpse of the characters' futures. It was satisfactory and it didn't leave me wanting more.

The writing could use some improvement. There was a lot of telling instead of showing, which was a shame for an esports novel. A lot of the matches were skimmed over. For the actual league matches, the writing didn't really heighten the tension of a championship match either. Then, the writing became all about showing what the characters did in the game but none of the emotional tension between the team players. There wasn't much suspense or build up to get you hooked into the matches.

Also, the writing really bothered me in the beginning because the author kept on using metaphors to describe every. little. detail. about the main leads. It got so repetitive reading about how their eyes lit up like stars or how their voices slowed down to be sarcastic.

As for the couple, I think there could have been more backstory on how they actually got together and broke up instead of the little tidbits of info mentioned that could have really made their reunion hurt more in hindsight.

This book had potential, but unfortunately, it fell through. You can find a better esports or ABO novel elsewhere.

Have mixed feelings about this book. I chose it because it's been a while since my last e-sports novel and I wanted something in that genre. Unfortunately I've already gone through most of the popular translated novels, so I decided to give this a try and it was.... okay.

I generally stay away from ABO settings because it's not my cup of tea, but it was interesting to read an e-sports novel with this kind of setting. The author explains a little about some of the measures competition officials take to prevent incidents caused by pheromones, so she does try to incorporate elements of the setting into this book.

The story follows Shen Qiao, a top laner who's transferred over to team DG after his position on his old team is taken over by someone else who team management thinks can mesh with the team strategy better, and the captain of team DG, Lu Zhe. According to rumors, SQ and LZ can't get along at all, and there's a lot of concern from fans that SQ's addition to the team will cause issues. Little do they know, SQ and LZ used to date in high school before being forced apart due to their family circumstances, and neither of them haven't forgotten the other.

I thought the romance in the story developed very suddenly. Initially it's very one-sided, with SQ playing the aloof character and LZ constantly chasing with him with some super aggressive lines and actions that I personally didn't like at all. For example, there's at least one scene I can remember, maybe more, where LZ uses his pheromones to overpower SQ's and freeze him in place. However, part of the way through, SQ suddenly decides to accept LZ's advances and get back together with him, and the author uses the poor excuse of SQ allowing himself to finally look back at their past as the reason why he changes his mind. Once that happens, the rest of the story becomes much sappier and filled with dog food. I felt bad for their manager and teammates for being forcefully fed so much dog food everyday. They even have a discussion on the dynamics of the relationship:

Zheng Zhizhuo looked around and saw that he was falling out of the conversation. For his idol's sake, he felt like he had to speak up.

"No, wait… isn't everyone here a WolfDog shipper?"

His teammates all shook their heads.

"Not me. I'm on Team 2Dog. They're both tops, whichever is fine. They're both alphas, after all. They let their abilities speak for themselves."

"I think ZheQiao is way better, and you can tell just by looking at them that our Captain Lu is the top."

"What's wrong with 'LuShen'? I like that sort of name."

Zheng Zhizhuo was speechless.

On their team, everyone had a different stance on the same ship?

But that wasn't important. The name of the ship was secondary. The most important thing was—

"Wolfy-ge is the top, he's so alpha! He's insanely alpha! You guys just don't understand his appeal!" Zheng Zhizhuo argued, his fannish side bursting out of him.

Old Wo and Qian Bao shook their heads, giving him a pitying look.

"Little friend, we might not understand Shen Qiao's charm."

"But…"

"We all know our captain is a dog."

I'm also not a fan of how the author wrote the relationship. I know it's a very rare alpha/alpha pairing, but they're always biting away at each other and being kinda violent in their actions in general. It's always a fight for dominance between them, except SQ has his glandular problems so he isn't always able to push out his pheromones as effectively as a regular alpha can.

Even though the main characters are on a professional LoL team, the author doesn't spend too much time describing the matches. The focus of the story is on the characters and their team's overall progress through the various tournaments. That's why I was very confused when the author suddenly decided to go into great detail for the last set of matches in the finals. I ended up skimming through those chapters.

It was an okay read, but I didn't like LZ's overly aggressive attitude towards SQ up until they got together.

?? wth why is the rating so high, the translation is fine but the overall writing style sucks, the match descriptions are just very confusing with the overly use of stage names as well as the character names that theyre playing. the side characters feel flat and forgettable and the both main characters are just? not that great tbh? i wanted to like the mc but he keeps switching how he acts, the love interest is just gross. the way hes acting genuinely makes me uncomfortable, even if theyre exes. fucking gross and i dont like their dynamic. also?? i did not sign up for a breakup gettogether story n idk why that wasnt mentioned in the summary??? furthermore i already read a bit of it in the story directly but i did read an entire spoiler about it in the replies and their back story just really does not save their relationship for me. another pro point i will give this novel tho was that the other teams did not feel as flat and boring/weak in comparison and i saw that they didnt add the typical “korean team is pretentious, rest is either weak or also another pretentious european or american team” stereotype thats often times seen (purely based on the fifth i read and another review tho)

Exactly what I expected from an eSports novel! It was fun and cute and had a bit of angst and shameless characters, team spirit
I liked it!
The added omegaverse alpha x alpha element was interesting but not overwhelming
It was still mostly an eSports novel
Also I liked how the eSports world was adapted to omegaverse
The inhibitors during the matches etc, those little details made it a lot more "realistic" and coherent!
The main couple was fun, I liked their dynamic: shamelessly flirting x tsundere
I recommend if you like eSports novels!
Btw the game they're playing is LoL, if you know absolutely nothing about the game (like the gameplay) it might be interesting to look that up before reading
Otherwise I guess you can kinda spit the gaming parts (though it's a bit of a shame for a eSports novel)
That's it for my review!
4/5 for the plot, setting, characters, romance (4/5 for each aspect)
Not mind-blowing, but a very enjoyable read! I recommend it if you like eSports danmei 🥰

Deceptively good for a league of legends esport yaoi. I was expecting some shenanigans but the plot was pretty solid, there was conflict and interesting backstories.
Didn't expect any of the traumatic lore with their families but honestly, good job, made it feel more serious and emotional. At the same time had fun (and extremely lewd) banter between the characters.
As for flaws, some of the pacing was a bit rushed at times and there were a few wrong descriptions of game fights but nothing serious. Recommend to anyone who loves meatbun flavored dogblood romance like me: it's of course a milder taste but genuinely compelling and well written for an esports danmei!

This is my first omegaverse novel though I usually read omegaverse in mangas. I had high expectations for this novel since a lot of people have been wanting to pump up the ratings saying it deserves more; but honestly speaking, as a LoL gamer and an avid reader of yaoi novels and manga. This particular novel got a lot of room for improvements. The ending for me was a bit lacking. The story was pretty bland. I wanted more action, more surprises, more drama. I could predict how the ending would unfold midway.

It was fun and quick.
Basically a m/m abo falling into your smile fanfic but with original characthers.
It starts a lot of side plots making you think it will be dramatic but they never develop and they all just end in a pretty happy and easy way, it's ok 'cause they end up happy but it made these side plots just kinda useless. It's mainly easy and funny.

Dnf - Chapter 16

I came here looking for an AA pairing but the dynamic of the main CP is literally just AO. I also found the ML obnoxious and annoying, so that was fun. Anyways, this just wasn’t for me.

Lots of games but not as complex and as long as The kings of Avatar.

The story?

- 70% of League of Legends event
- 15% romance ABO
- 15% past conflicts

Warnings:
- Danmei ABO

This was lowkey such a bad novel, but the premise and drama were so fascinating. Pairing ABO and esports is so fascinating to me. I genuinely want to reread this and see if my review changes.

DNF - at chapter 45.

Meh, this story is very underwhelming and this couple are confusing AF. Like I loved the AA concept but the one A has a sorta tsundere vibe but then not and the pacing with the games and then their past and complicated family relations.

Maybe if I could handle the general pacing of the book everything would tie in better towards later chapters but I really can’t get into it.

Also the esports is very lacklustre as the author just kind of brushes over the games. It’s very hard to pull, your attention and then keep it.

Will attempt this at another time when I’m feeling more patient.

This hit all my weak spots: It's a gay esports novel with an alpha x alpha couple. What more do you want to hear from me.

Is it perfect? No.
Am I still gonna give it five stars despite that? Yes, because I wish good five-star karma will grant me with more stories like that.

My biggest regret and annoyance with the story is that it's not a switch couple and the sex scene was pretty awful, but that sadly happens a lot with chinese novels. For good and satisfying smut you can apparently only trust ao3 to deliver.

PIcked it up again to finish where i left off after finishing Glory and wanting something to scratch the itch lol. It wasn't that bad but it's not great either. There's definitely way better e-sports danmei out there.
