Kate is the USA Today-bsetselling author of many books of both historical and contemporary fiction. Under the name Katharine Swartz, she is the author of the Tales from Goswell books, a series of time-slip novels set in the village of Goswell.
She likes to read women's fiction, mystery and thrillers, as well as historical novels. She particularly enjoys reading about well-drawn characters and avoids high-concept plots.
Having lived in both New York City and a tiny village on the windswept northwest coast of England, she now resides in a market town in Wales with her husband, five children, and two Golden Retrievers.
Growing up dirt poor is tough enough but when you have no one that loves you along with being poor it is bad, really bad. You are definitely all alone and if that person grows up to be a cold hearted, ruthless person with a don't care attitude it is something I certainly would be able to fully understand.
If that person however, not only is shunned by both his parents and grandparents but also beat to a bloody pulp every day of his childhood and turns to revenge, then I would think that it would take a miracle or hours of psychological efforts to bring the person back from the edge of darkness.
But as it happens very often in life, there is something or someone in the past or future of the person that can and will be able to shine a light through the darkness and set their tormented souls free. In the new read from Kate Hewitt I was shown just that along with a childhood love that grows into a fully blossomed lifelong romance.
The read deals with Angelo Corretti, he has always been the outcast of the family as his father never really acknowledged him and his own mother turned her back on him. Being treated like a bastard left him with years of hurt, pent up anger and a devious plan to bring the Correttis and their empires to the ground.
And so he does, the boy from the slumps grows up and becomes a rich and powerful force to be reckoned with, he even gets to the point of taking over the very first of the empires. Only he discovers his past working there. Yes the one woman from his childhood that stood by him through all the years of hurt and set his soul alight in a night so passionate he has never been able to find that kind of passion again, comes walking back into his life.
Lucia, has always loved Angelo even after he walked away from her and left her to deal with the scandal and whispers of the community after their one heart stopping passionate night, not to mention the very real gut wrenching heartache of the kind of loss I would not wish upon my worst enemy.
It has made her stronger but also more cautious and she has vowed she will never again fall into the trap of loving a man and letting him have the satisfaction to walk away from her, and this time around she would love and let go. But that is always easier said then done. For deep inside she can still see the boy she fell in love with and not the cold hearted man Angelo has become.
The characters of Angelo and Lucia were both wonderful. I loved that he author let Lucia be the stronger one, and totally adored that she was not the normal kind of heroine that keeps her feelings to herself, no ladies this one says what she feels and thinks straight from the start, as these books usually give you the characters holding back their feelings till the end which makes it very predictable. So I really loved that touch!
Angelo was a hero of the the truly tormented kind, I felt really sorry for him being shunned by his family and especially by his own mother. But I really loved that he worked his way up to the top when everyone thought he would fail and become nothing. Instead he becomes the man Lucia knows he is deep inside.
The backdrop settings were fantastic, the beauty of Paris showed the love between Angelo and Lucia, and the thrilling backdrop of Sicily let the restlessness of Angelo's soul really shine through.
The dialogue was one of wonder and pure romance as the author's words really let the level of love Lucia feels for Angelo jump out at me as reader and they are words that will stay with me for a long time.
I highly recommend this read for fans of lovers reunited romance.
5/5 star review " Stripping the shame by unleashing the hurt"
I wanted to like this more but I just did't. I think it lacked sufficient conflict. Plus and maybe mostly, I didn't care for the hero. He just wasn't self assured enough. He came off pretty lame in several places. Not what I really want in my HP heroes.
I normally despise books which feature unrequited love but this one worked because the heroine certainly wasn't spineless and had the courage to walk away from the hero and give him a piece of her mind.
She had spent a night with the hero years ago comforting him when he needed it but he ran out without a word, ruining her reputation and leaving her with consequence so when he comes back all wealthy, ready to take revenge on the family who rejected him, she wants no part of it. She ignores him but when he doesn't go away lays herself bare, her love for him, her loss. I liked both the characters, the hero didn't want to hurt her and wanted to love her but he had never seen love. I liked the book, the hero could be stupid but he had his good moments.
AN INHERITANCE OF SHAME by USA Today Bestselling author Kate Hewitt is Harlequin Presents release for August 2013.
Angelo Corretti was after revenge only with the family that shunned him. The Correttis. Now he was on the verge of getting all. He did have everything now, but did he really have all? He had no one to call his own. No friends.
One time he had a friend, Lucia. Then one night had changed the dynamics between them. All of a sudden, she was there in front of him. Could they really go back to their old friendship? Was she ready to forgive him for not looking back?
AN INHERITANCE OF SHAME has layer upon layer of complexities. The characters are so strong and exceptional that you’ll be left amazed. Lucia is deeply wounded from her personal tragedy, gossip and scandal yet keeps her emotions well hidden behind barriers. She is in a constant whirlwind of emotion that courses through as she tries and walks ahead into an uncertain future. Angelo is a gorgeous alpha hero who has hidden his sensitive side. Kate Hewitt usually writes fast-paced romances packed with sizzle and sexual tension and this was no exception—the sexual scenes were hot and steamy. AN INHERITANCE OF SHAME has many deeper layers as well. Emotions are palpable and heart-wrenching. You’ll want to read it again and again!
The hero Angelo had a very tough childhood. His father especially was a major asshole who treated his son horribly. His grandparents also felt he was nothing more than a burden.
His only comfort was his friend and soul mate Lucia. They have one passionate night together but then he leaves her without a word. Years later Angelo is an emotionally scared man and he is back in Sicily determined to destroy the Corretti dynasty.
Lucia suffered much loss but she is sweet and caring. She knows they are meant to be together forever, but Angelo keeps pushing her away out of fear of being hurt again. Lucia wants the boy she knew and loved not the arrogant cold tycoon he has become. His bitterness and thirst for revenge is tearing them apart and she can't help but miss the boy she'd fallen in love with.
Will Angelo ever be able to let go of the past and let her into his heart and will Lucia manage to finally exorcise his demons?
Heartbreaking and beautiful love story that only needed an epilogue!!!
I had a difficult time connecting with the two main characters in this story. For me their relationship felt very neutral towards each other. Wish I felt something or anything for these characters and their story.
I read and reviewed this book immediately after reading it late yesterday evening, although, I was torn between three or four stars. After sleeping on it and certain actions throughout the story continually nagging at me, especially considering my feelings towards the hero, I edited my rating this morning and lowered it from a four to a three star. It's simply the best I can give considering. As the hero spoke or thought several times of how he didn't give a single thought of the heroine those seven years after being intimate with her, it troubled me more and more. He even told her this bluntly and blatantly (while on their first official date,) saying he had not allowed himself to think of her...ever. Never once did he call and check on her let alone come for a visit after claiming her virginity. He knew not of all the pain, desolation, heartache, and public scrutiny she endured or what he had left behind. He threw it away to obsess on revenge. I don't think he saw the situation clearly at all but there are people who are so hyperfocused that they don't see what's right in front of them or what's going on around them. I understand this but in this situation, it simply went too far. Even as he learned of all her excruciating pain he chose only to think of himself and his plan for revenge to take every business holding from his family leaving them with nothing. His hatred for the family and community who never accepted him because he was a bastard, was OTT. Being blind and ignorant of how this took over his life and changed him and his personality, and it certainly wasn't for the better, was not a pretty picture because the vengeance and revenge came before everything, even his heroine and the life he craved to have with her. That was pretty sad and frustrating. This battle within himself went on throughout the whole book sans the last couple of pages and there was little balance to the story.
Original Review I did not set out to read this book but just wanted to check it out. Couldn't put it down because, like always, I was already too involved and wanted to know how it ended. The ending was good but a bit late in its arrival and I certainly would have loved an epilogue.
Although I ended up liking the hero somewhat, it was hard to get past the fact that he took her virginity and then left the next morning and she didn't hear from him again for seven years. He never bothered to call and I think the heroine had to go through too much pain.
I have not read any of the prior books in this series but this one is a decent stand-alone.
The author Kate Hewitt was surprising me a lot with this story. I checked the author's webpage before I started reading this book and she is right writing a story based on revenge is tough job but once you know Angelo the words we just pouring. The heroine Lucia is a kind of girl whom we see in real life and yes I would like to meet her in flesh to know to salute her for her courage and determination and the love which she had for Angelo. Angelo was rejected by his own mother and father and I understand his desire for revenge to be honest I didn't like the way he behaved with Lucia in the very beginning of the story he just wanted her to accept his apology after 7 years which is not fair. But Lucia made sure that Angelo learns what is love. Overall it was an excellent read I was crying laughing and sighing too when I was reading this book. Love this book Kate.
An Inheritance of Shame is a very emotional story. It really started when Lucia fell in love with Angelo Corretti as a child. She was always there for him when he was beaten up as a child for being the bastard child of a Corretti. But Angelo is so deep in his own misery that he never really noticed what he had in Lucia.
Angelo Corretti wants one thing in life … REVENGE. He plans on bringing the Corretti’s down one company at a time. He has made his fortune on his own sweat and tears and he now has controlling interest in the Corretti Hotel Palermo. He felt comfort once in the arms of Lucia. After taken her virginity he leaves her bed before morning and never looked back. Not even to see if she was alright. I wanted to really hate this character and at times I succeeded.
Angelo is shocked to see Lucia working as a maid at the hotel. And furious with her, he feels betrayed that she would go to work for the Corretti’s. Lucia’s character suffered so much. In love with Angelo as a small child, her love was very one sided. He could not see her through his own suffering and heartbreak. Lucia suffered more heartache than anyone should have to go through. And it has made her very strong.
This is not a light read, but I do recommend this book. Just make sure to have some hankies ready.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
One of the most shameful things that can happen to a child in a traditional, conservative community is the stigma of illegitimacy. Angelo Coretti was despised and looked down on in the community into which he'd been born and also by the family of which he was an unwanted member, born as he was on the wrong side of the blanket, to use a dreadful cliche. He grew up burning for revenge and in the process, he treated Lucia, the girl who had always loved him, in as bad a way as his father had treated his own own mother, leading to tragedy and devastation.
But Lucia wasn't vengeful or angry. She took the cards she'd been dealt and got on with her life, a life of honour and dignity, even if she didn't have much money. Angelo reappears in her life and realising what he has done, is ready to shower her with diamonds and designer clothes by way of making amends. But Lucia isn't impressed at all. She'd prefer to roam with Angelo in the street markets and dine on pizza in a homely restaurant than then browse the high end shops and dine in five star hotels. Because she understood one thing that Angelo hadn't yet understood. That the trappings of wealth and status don't mean a thing if you don't have love in your life. Angelo's obsessive desire for revenge has already ruined one life. Will he listen to Lucia. I loved the message of this novel and the simple yet highly principled personality of Lucia. I truly hoped Angelo would come to know what a treasure she was.
An enjoyable and compelling read from an author whose work I totally respect.
I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
7thn lalu mereka melakukan one night stand, setelah itu Angelo pergi tanpa tahu kalau ternyata Lucia hamil, 7 atau 8bln kemudian bayi yang dikandung Lucia meninggal. 7th kemudian Angelo kembali & kesuksesan yg menyertainya & Lucia tdk kuasa menolak Angelo walau tahu hanya sebagai pelampiasan hasrat. Ga seru yah, knapa tdk dibikin Lucia lebih jaga harga diri aplg Lucia kerja housekeeping di hotel, bikin Angelo yg mengejar2. Mengapa tdk diceritakan berurutan dari masa kecil Lucia & Angelo sbg anak haram Coretti, pertemanan dgn Lucia, ONS 7thn lalu, kehamilan & kematian anak mereka sehingga lebih berasa emosinya.
Negativity and the need to exact revenge will only take you so far. One's own happiness is exactly that, one's own and can never be equivalent to someone's downfall or disgrace...a valuable moral of the story through this emotional angst of a romance!
Every book in this series is a surprise to read but definitely in a good way!
April 2016 Review: Nothing to add to my original review. Angelo is the illigitimate brother to Gio and Luca and his father (Carlo Corretti) wanted nothing to do with him. The Correttis are aware of him but havent gotten to know him. Id liketo think at some stage they do. Angelo is driven by revenge but his childhood best friend Lucia shows him that it is not enough. What he is missing is love and Angelo needs to decide if it is enough to have Lucia's love alone.
Every book I have read about the Corretti's is like adding another piece to the puzzle to help create an amazing masterpiece of a story.
Kate Hewitt's An Inheritance of Shame is #4 in the Corretti's Dynasty, a series, in my opinion that beats every other series hands down. For example, if you loved Bad Blood/The Notorious Wolves you will ADORE the Corretti's
In An Inheritance of Shame, Angelo Corretti gets to tell his story. He's the illegitimate son of Carlo Corretti and he's back in town to chew up and spit right out the Corretti empire. We meet just after he's successfully taken over Matteo's hotel chain. Matteo has disappeared from the face of the earth after running off with Alessandro's intended at the alter, now he's gunning for Luca Corretti's fashion business. (Luca's fab story is #2). He walks into the Penthouse vowing no Corretti will ever stay in HIS hotel ever again and as he's stripping off to have a shower he is shocked to discover a maid still doing up the room. The maid is Lucia, Angelo's best friend from childhood. Lucia is stunned! The last time they saw each other was 7 years ago and she had the best and worst ever one night stand with him. Angelo is speechless and furious that this is what's become of his best friend. Seeing Angelo again awakens everything Lucia has tried to forget, from their childhood together where she was Angelo's little puppy (followed him everwhere) all the way thru to the consequences of what happened 7 years ago.
I am absolutely spellbound with this series and I eagerly await each release. This story is gripping and dramatic and full of emotion from all parties. Revenge is the drive for Angelo and somehow Lucia (love the name) manages to bring him back to reality and show him he deserves to be loved and he is loved. Angelo is so driven by revenge he has neither had the time or inclination for relationships but Lucia is home and familiar and stirs long buried feelings , especially when he learns what happened after he walked away the next morning. Both Lucia and Angelo step into unfamiliar territory when they decide to give themselves a chance.
I loved Angelo's story, I'm glad to see how he fits in the puzzle and I hope in future books he's resolved his issues and is welcomed into the Corretti empire. I really liked Lucia, she's hard working, down to earth and has faced loss and hardship. I felt invested in her and believed she deserving her happy ever after. I loved their back story and felt that the bits of their childhood was brilliantly weaved into the story. This can definitely be read as a stand alone or as an addition to the series, it slots in perfectly.
Roll on #5, Sharon Kendrick's A Whisper of Disgrace.
This novel is probably the best out of all the books in the series.'AWESOME' would probably will be an underestimation. It was undoubtedly the author's best i have read till now.
The story is about the illegitimate corretti angelo and his childhood friend lucia. The hero wants to be loved and has a sad and dirt poor childhood with everyone except lucia shunning him due to his illegitimacy.Lucia is the only one who has loved him from his childhood and has always been there to support him but Angelo is so busy fostering the hate and planning his revenge that he fails to see lucia's love and leaves her to take his revenge and returns after seven years as a very rich man on the verge of fulfilling his revenge only to find out that the lucia he left behind is no longer the girl he knew...
i loved the way the author made me understand the protagonists and the background of the story was really awesome.I loved the hero because he despite all his flaws he had real emotions and he did not treat the heroine in a sad and masochist way.The heroine had backbone and she was very strong and did not shy away from saying what she thought without being bitchy or rude.In short every single thing in this novel was AWESOME and it showed me what really Love is about.Emotions were given priority rather and the relationship was not 'just' based on sex.
Go ahead and read this because you are gonna regret it if you don't...
Angelo Corretti has one thing on his mind – REVENGE. The only thing he wants to do is destroy the Corretti family who cruelly rejected him for his illegitimacy. The only person who accepted him and loved him unconditionally was Lucia his childhood friend. The day when his father died he went to her and she gave him everything when he needed it most, and in the morning he walked away and didn't look back. Now he's back ready to take destroy the Corretti's but who does he find in his hotel room none other than Lucia. He's angry to find her working for them... But is he to do, she still loves him and he has no idea of the secret she holds. To me I enjoyed the book but I was getting a little agitated because Angelo never being love or accepted as a child has no clue that she loves him or that he has always loved her. I started to give this 4 stars but I love seeing Angelo grow and do the right thing in the end.
Angelo Corretti's one goal in life is to take revenge on the family that turned their back on him, the unacknowledged bastard in the family. Years before he found one light in his life, Lucia, who gave him comfort on one of his blackest nights, but then he walked away from her.
Now he's back to fulfill his plan for revenge, but encounters that same loving woman. His decision is whether to accept her love or turn away and give himself totally over to hatred.
It was a good second-chance story & I wasn't sure there would be enough for an HEA, but the author came through. Bitterness and anger eats at your soul and I know that it's hard to come back from that.
This book was great, I was really enjoying it. Right up to the last 3 pages. What the fuck kind of ending was that? The single most abrupt ending ever like a double public epiphany. Not only would Corretis decision to abort the final meeting ruined his credibility, how in the hell did the woman get back from Paris? Oh, I forgot, it's a book so she just magic'd herself there. Ruined a perfectly good book.
"-¿Sabes acaso mejor que yo lo que quiero? –Que te quieran –repuso ella–. Y no van a hacerlo. No puedes obligar a nadie a quererte. Pero yo sí te quiero, con todo mi corazón. El amor es lo único que puede llenar ese vacío. Deja que mi amor sea suficiente."
Ohhhh Angelo♥ Cuanto odio y resentimiento!! Pero en el fondo, no es mas que dolor y anhelo!! De a poco van mezclándose mas los miembros de la familia, pero aun espero algo mas!

Another great look into the Corretti family. Angelo was the unacknowledged son who felt he had something to prove. He had a couple of interactions with his legitimate cousins and they didn't seem to resent him as much as he did them. It will be interesting to see if be can make peace with his family before this series ends.
through whole book lucia thinks how she is poor and angelo rich, how she doesn't belong in his world la-di-da, but angelo constantly changes his minds about wanting lucia and seeking revenge. and the whole book goes around these dilemmas and nothing else happens.
Fours years after this miniseries, Sicily's Corretti's Dynasty, had been published, I finally finished it. It took awhile but I did it. This was book four in this series, and it was a nice way to finish and overly enjoyable series. It wasn't favorite of the series but nor was it was my least either. In fact I was surprised by how much I did really like this story because I just wasn't expecting that. It was a nice surprise.
The most surprising thing about this book was how romantic it was. Angelo and Lucia actually went on dates. Albeit overtop, lush and exotic dates, but that was what made them feel really romantic. Their time in Paris was sweet and they shared some tender scenes but also a passionate scene as well, though I do wish that scene was a bit longer, but it was a very romantic and sweet moment between them. It showed off their connection in that scene plus there were some heart filled sentiments that were really beautiful. I just really appreciated that Kate Hewitt showed them dating and getting to know each other again as they built their relationship. It showed the process and didn't rush through it like some romances tend to do. It was a nice pace too.
Another thing I really like was the fact that they had a history together that added tension and angst to the story, which I always love. In this particular case, they were neighbors and had grown up together. Lucia was in love with him for practically her entire life and no matter how he pushed her away she kept her arms opened and took care of him. It was sweet yet heartbreaking because she had these deep feelings that she had for him which he never returned. And that dented her self esteem for sure and that carried to the present when the met again. But because they had this past, it made their present complicated and not an easy road to get a romance going because they had the emotional hurdles that they had to jump over first. It was a journey.
I enjoyed the love scenes in this book especially the one in the middle in the shower. It was a very intimate yet romantic and tender and extremely emotional. This was the first time that they ever stripped all the layers back and let everything loose. It was the first time they looked in each other's eyes when they made love. That was a sucker punch to the heart because that was such a poignant moment in their relationship. That was when he realized that she didn't want to let her go and it was more than just lust that he was slaking. He wanted more and wanted to try with her. She was a little wary based on his past actions, but that was the moment where everything turned for them. It was a good scene. The other love scenes were good too. They were passionate yet emotional as well.
Also a really refreshing change with this book was how soon she was honest with her feelings for him. She admitted her love for him way before the end. Yes, in the beginning she tried to hide them from him but came clean halfway through the book. And I really like that. She didn't have to hide from him and everything was out in the open before the decided to pursue a relationship. For the most part in romances, feelings are kept secret until the very end, creating all this drama and tension between the couple therefore making for an interesting story, but in this case it really worked to have Lucia open up to him earlier and it made their relationship stronger knowing what they faced. I really like that.
Now even though this book was emotional especially with Angelo and Lucia's history that caused plenty conflict for them, I thought it could have gone a step further and just be a tad more intense. At least for me. Just something was missing in the emotional arena that I can't quite put my finger. I wasn't down but I felt there could have been more. I needed something more to wow me.
Overall this book was pretty good. I enjoyed a lot more than I thought I was going to, and this book surprised me. I wasn't always thrilled with Angelo and thought he was callous at time especially in regards her, but I absolutely loved Lucia. I felt for her and I feel her pain and hurt coming off the pages. It was hard to witness, but I understood everything that she was going through and why she was hesitant to get involved with him again. I didn't blame her. While he didn't have a freaking clue. Anyway I thought it was refreshing their openness early on in the book, and I liked that he knew that she loved him in the past and the present. It was a nice change from the usual format. And though this book was emotional, I wouldn't call it the most emotional read I have ever read. There just needed to be a little more intensity to put some oomph to it. There just needed to be something that put this over the edge though I don't know what that would be. Maybe if I felt he understood her more and what she went through in the past when he left her then I would have liked it a bit more, but I don't think he totally got it either. Angelo was not my favorite hero, and he was almost too arrogant for me liking. Maybe if I liked him more than that would have been the cherry on top or it could have been the intensity that needed to be upped like I said. But for the most part I did like this book very much.

Didn’t like hero at all he was such a jerk just leaving with not even thinking about what he did to her after they grew up together. I don’t understand how woman can like a book like this when the heroine is such a doormat
