We use this book in a community college course for both online and face-to-face classes. The students really like the hands-on approach with examples, practice exercises and case studies. This popular textbook integrates XHTML and CSS topics so students learn from the beginning how to use both XHTML and CSS to configure text, color, and page layout. There is also excellent coverage of web design best practices, accessibility, usability, and Web standards. Related topics such as search engine optimization, the web development process, and e-commerce are also introduced. A bonus is the textbook's companion website at http://webdevfoundations.net that has a page for each chapter with chapter links, additional information, flash review puzzles, iPod review quizzes, and chapter updates.

I thought the instructions in this book were hard to understand until I started actually doing the examples. They make learning HTML very simple. Of course, I work best by actually doing something rather than just reading. The reading of this complicated text confused the hell out of me. But the book was very helpful as a class companion, and I will be keeping it. Although, I believe even this edition is already out of date, but that's what you get with anything related to technology. Overall, though, this is a great and useful reference!

Overall this is a good source for beginner web and xhtml training. There were a couple of instances in which the instructions given did not match the final sample projects, I used this book in class and was able to verify this with instructor and other students.

But I would say this is a good foundation book.

Very basic book - mostly skimmed over it. It had some good ideas for very beginning web design, but you would definitely need additional training before you went out on your own with a full sized site.
p283 Good example of how CSS boxes work
p451 Java script resources
p455 Ajax resources

Well organized and easy to understand. Just make sure you get the chapter updates online...there are number of mistakes, omissions, etc. in each chapter.
