What brilliant research. Many of my relatively simplistic ideas of identity politics around language in colonial UP were rewired by this book. Loved the chapters on language policy in education and civil services, and the brilliant use of statistics on readership, publication and literacy across scripts divided by region, community and language.

A fine review of the Hindi-Urdu battles between the 1860s and the (very) early 20th century.
