After reading this book, I wonder if author, Jamie Myers, actually knows any boys who are 8-12 years old…
Aside from the cover, there isn’t much about this book that will grab a tween guy. There are no graphics, no illustrations at all. The chapters are short, that’s great for them, but the content is better suited for high school, college bound guys. What 8 or 10 year old has any clue about jobs, college, mindsets? Unless your kid is keeping pace with Sheldon Cooper, much of the content is going to be lost on them.
That said, there is some fantastic stuff in this book. Myers encourages boys to seek adult input regularly, as well as getting to know their grandparents. These points almost pushed me to rate the book 4 stars. There are tips on family/siblings and friends that encourage positive growth but are not targeted for the age group stated, IMO.
Additionally, there is short advice on diet, exercise, emotional health, interpersonal skills and a bizarre ending of outdoor skills related to camping & fishing: building a fire, tying knots, using a compass, cleaning fish, packing for a trip. I suppose these things are useful for some guys but most 8-12 year olds I know are either using their thumbs or playing organized sports.
Kids at this age are visually stimulated, especially guys. If the author’s intention was for this book to be read by the student, there needs to be some visual interest in this book: pictures, charts, graphs, color, characters, symbols - something quirky for them to identify with and to follow thru the book. It could include something as simple as numbering the 101Things.
All things considered, some good information in TikTok blurb length “chapters”, perhaps better suited to high school guys📚
I just lost my review & am too ill to rewrite it! So, in a nutshell, the book has some sound advice, but also feels somewhat New Age-y. As I am Christian, that takes away from it's reliability. The ability to be understood varies. Some parts a tween can easily understand, others even I had to re-read, so don't just hand over the book & expect the child to read & understand it on his own. I am unable to read this w/ my Grandson, so IDK how this will be dealt w/. Basically, I am undecided. I will have to re-read it when I'm well, then decide.
For honest Review. This was a very educational book that will help young boys to become men. it has alot of great information in helping you charter the growth of become the person you need to be and respecting your self .
Great book! It is written in a very caring, no non-sense and easy-to-follow way. The topics covered were wide ranging and epitomize values of staying connected socially as well as working hard and having an open mind to learn new skills.
I bought this for my grandsons birthday , and whether or not he gained from It, I did! I read it on my kindle as he reads it from his paperback, I got lots of useful Information from it,
it is a good book about word choice and how to express yourself in public and in private overall i think its a good book over all highly recommend for boys
