I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, I still live there as well as in Dublin, Ireland. I've been a soldier, freelance journalist, tended bar, sold designer cakes, owned a painting and decorating company along with a number of other schemes and scams. If that doesn't offend you I also play bagpipes with the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band. All my books stand alone, read them in whatever order you wish. They are filled with the sort of oddballs we are all curious about, but wisely, prefer to keep at a distance. None of my characters will be saving the world from terrorism, international banking conspiracies or coups to take over the government. Rather, they inhabit a world just below the surface of polite society, characters with one foot on either side of the law. The circumstances they find themselves in are usually due to bad decisions, but bad decisions lead to interesting stories. They serve not so much as an example but as a warning to us all. Thanks for taking the time, happy reading.

To say that I am a fan of this series would be a serious understatement. When I start reading one of these books, I am hard pressed to put it down. The only reason I do put it down is that my eyelids insist it is time to sleep. Page turners all! Part of this lies in the way that Mike Faricy constructs the crime, the investigation and the final solution. The other part is the big question, what will Dev do next? Together, it is the formula for a great series. Don't take my word for it, start at the beginning with RUSSIAN ROULETTE and see for yourself.

SCAM MAN - Love Is in the Air; Fraud Is Everywhere
As I suspected might happen, Morton is back! You did read the previous book in the series, DOG GONE, right? No? Oh, well… your loss. And, Dev has a new girlfriend. Stop rolling your eyes. This one could be serious. He's wining and dining her and being the perfect gentleman. By the way, she too has a dog, a chocolate lab named Lady Godiva. Two dog lovers… a match made in heaven?

Love is in the air. Heidi Bauer has met 'the one.' She's head over heels for a man who makes claims that, if true, just might put him in line for sainthood. Dev suspects a big IF as he sets out to investigate Heidi's amour du jour. As you might suspect, craziness ensues.

In these unprecedented times, everyone needs an escape. Maybe you look to fantasy, but should you like your vacation from the day to day to be a bit more down to earth, I recommend the Dev Haskell Private Investigator series. You can take your getaway one book at a time or look for the omnibus editions. Just be sure to start your holiday with book 1, RUSSIAN ROULETTE, so you don't miss any of the action.

FOILED - White Hat vs Black Hat
Dev Haskell, ever the good Samaritan, finds himself babysitting, and ultimately befriending, a member of the tinfoil hat brigade named Ignatius Arnold, better known as "Iggy." Mortimer helps with this achievement a lot.

Dev Haskell hasn't seen Bonnie Lowry in ten years. She's divorced, with three kids whose names reflect her drinking habits over the years, and now developing software with her computer genius roomer, Iggy. Of course, the software is a game changer, Bonnie and Iggy are in danger… you can guess the rest. Niles Wegger, another programming genius, and international online scammer is at the heart of all the troubles. Follow Dev down the highways and byways, and even a river chase, as he foils the dastardly plot.

If you've been reading the series (you HAVE been reading it, right?), Lucious Dixon, ex-NFL player with anger management issues, is becoming quite the regular sidekick for Dev. He's big, he loves to eat, and he drives like an old lady. Once you get past his size and propensity for shopping bags full of fast food, he's on OK guy.

If you're looking for a few laughs, a lot of action, and voluptuous babes… look no more. This is the series for you.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS… - Nightmare in Pink
Dev's new girlfriend, Barbara Millicent Dahl, AKA Barbie Dahl (Doll) is probably the least likeable character in the series so far. So much so, that she detracts from the reading enjoyment I've come to expect from these books. Don't get me wrong, Mike Faricy's writing is just as good as always, but Barbie Dahl is so nerve-gratingly pink and plastic … think nails on a blackboard. Perhaps that is the point.

Juxtaposed to Barbie is Dev's long-time pal and army buddy Arthur "Goose" Gander. He is the instrument that gets our St. Paul PI on a plane to Las Vegas to see why his brother Kenny is being followed. Kenny is on the spectrum and brilliant with numbers. As part of the mystery, Tubby Gustafson and his right-hand man Fat Freddy Zimmerman seem to know what's going on with Dev before Dev does. Tubby and Fat Freddy are becoming quite the regulars in the series, much to Dev's dismay.

Into every life, some rain must fall. Barbie made some of the humor a bit sour, but I dare you to think about a guy named Goose Gander without cracking a smile. On balance, this may not have been my new favorite in the series, it definitely has its moments.

In order to best appreciate the trials and tribulations of Devlin Haskell, PI, you really should start with the first book and binge your way through the series. The womanizing, wise-cracking Haskell will keep you laughing and scratching your head in disbelief at the antics that follow him around like a golden retriever puppy.

Good, but…

Another good story with Dev doing an awful lot of work and putting himself in some danger whilst earning next to nothing. Not only that he had to fork out for a week at The Bellagio and probably ended up bankrupt after paying for reparations to the room after his dog Morton trashed it on more than one occasion.

The most irritating part of the whole series is people constantly getting Haskell’s surname wrong. It’s not a difficult name to remember but the theme of getting his name wrong is very tiresome.

I’ve still a lot of Dev Haskell books to read but think I need a rest from them for a while.
