Like the other handy little books in this series, and especially the one on Steinberg's Virtual Studio Technology (VST) effects, this is a very handy primer and reference on the use of the very popular VST tools, in this case "voices" of different instruments, in software form. This relieves the musician, composer, or recording engineer of the expense in time and money of buying the actual instruments - not practical for most people, who have limited budgets - and either learning to play any that he/she hasn't mastered or hiring someone else who already knows how. This one will be sitting within arms reach of the computer I'm using to make music, because I'm sure I'll be reaching for it fairly often during the learning curve.
