My Dearest Lieutenant Colonel

Rate this book
Lady Elspeth Finch-Hatton is a free spirit that could not care less about titles, birthrights and wealth. Even though she is soon to marry the Earl of Launceston, she knows that her heart will never beat for him, as it's a marriage her mother has arranged by force. The only man who could possibly make her happy, was Lord Bryce Rowe, who left for the war six years ago, taking with him Elspeth's every hope for love and happiness...

When her lost love returns at the most unexpected time, will Elspeth find the courage to fight for what her heart desires?

Bryce has returned from war to find that the love of his life is to marry his wealthy cousin, despite her promise that she will be waiting for him. With his whole world collapsing, he tries to pull himself together. However, when he encounters Elspeth again, memories resurface and his heart starts to beat in the most uncontrollable rhythm for one more time. However, claiming her love will be an uphill struggle, as he will have to go against the Ton and her family.

Will Bryce be brave enough to open his heart again and pursue the only woman he has ever loved?

Elspeth and Bryce might have spent the last six years apart, but the affection between them never faded; if anything, their love for each other is growing stronger with each passing day. However, Elspeth's conniving betrothed will not tolerate this union, leading to an ugly confrontation. Could Elspeth and Bryce build bridges between them and compensate for the years they lost? Will they dare to go against society and write their own fairytale?

"My Dearest Lieutenant Colonel" is a historical romance novel of approximately 80,000 words. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed happily ever after.

Promising start, lackluster finish

It's not the worst regency I've read, and the first two chapters were kind of decent; but after that, the dialogue felt stilted, and there are line breaks in the middle of dialogue.

I was quite confident I had found an anachronism in "mooch," but I was not familiar with this older meaning of "loiter". The entomology seems to be up for debate and one source claimed this meaning came into vogue in the 1850s, but you can take that with a grain of salt. Similarly, I was so ready to call BS on Schweppes carbonated water until I looked it up, and it actually is that old. So, there are some interesting obscure details the author has included. Despite the issues I have with the manuscript, I give a point for an unlikely historical detail.

BUT - trophy wife, sweetheart neckline, playing footsie, not giving a hoot, maneating woman - these are indisputably creations of a later era.

Minor observation - There's way too much consideration of a droplet hanging off some duke's nose. Snot is not something I want to think about when reading a romance.

Men court; women are courted.

Note that hero tells heroine that he loves her during a dance, but later heroine tells her mother "He has not said he does (love me)."

I don't care how sick one's relative is. When you've set a date for an elopement, you AT LEAST send a note to the other party, not just leave them in the lurch. Unacceptable. Hero casually recalls his promise and is very casual, like "hey I forgot to meet that girl yesterday. Huh guess I'll send her a note." Then they never speak of the failed elopement, and he proposes to her as if she hadn't already agreed to marry him! Second half of book breaks down and becomes very convoluted.

Ultimately, I think the author is doing a rather good job on historical details and world-building things. Sentence structure, though, reads at an immature level, with some unnecessary/redundant dialogue. I will be interested in seeing how the author's voice develops in future works.

First half is three stars, second half is two, rounding to three.

Love wins out for both sisters.
When you return from fighting in a war and find the woman you love is to marry someone else it is a blow to say the least. That is what happens to Bryce he gave his heart can he give someone else that heart now. Elspeth is facing a marriage to a man she does not love all because it was what her mother wants. Elspeth and Bryce are two souls who really need each other. Six years is long time to wait yet when there is love it will not be denied. I was completely in Bryce and Elspeth corner and I really liked how it ended. It was good story.

Clean read

This book shows how two young people who vowed to marry when young run into complications that six years later find themselves in an unacceptable situation. All gets over overcomes to a happy end. I really did not much like Elsbeth, her sister or her mom. I did not feel these characters were consistent in their personalities and perhaps the gaps I felt throughout the story was the reason. Overall had a hard time following the storyline clearly

Love makes life worth living.

This is a interesting, sweet book that holds your attention the whole book. Two people who have loved each other since childhood, and continued into adulthood. But war and absence can cause unforseen difficulties, and can relationships survive. Not to mention all the family dynamics. Great book.

An unforgettable love

Totally fascinating journey of love. I absolutely loved this amazing story. The characters are interesting and entertaining as well as the story line. The extended epilogue gives the opportunity to find the extent of the beautiful happy ending to both sisters lives. Amazing writing. I absolutely recommend this wonderful story. Excellent writing.

This story started off really well, but quickly deteriorated as I continued to read. The plot was a good idea, but not designed very well. There are too many holes, and why wouldn't the Bryce claim their was a prior understanding. The villain is allowed to get away with their evil ways, even though we got a happily ever after. This story is very disappointing.

Long lost love

An intriguing story that will hold your attention until the end! Betrayed at every turn can our heroine really get her happy ever after? Not if her evil betrothed has a say in it, he will have her at any cost, cares not for her happiness!

TOO SIMILAR TO ONE I'VE ALREADY READ.

WITHIN THE PAST FEW DAYS I READ A STORY ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE THIS ONE. ALMOST SCENE FOR SCENE. SO I DON'T NEED TO FINISH THIS ONE.
