New York Times bestselling author Catherine Bybee was raised in Washington State, but after graduating from high school, she moved to Southern California with hopes of becoming a movie star. She now writes full-time and has penned the International Bestselling Not Quite series, the MacCoinnich Time Travel series as well as the Internationally Bestselling Weekday Brides series.
Her books have been translated in over twenty languages.
Jax's book was fantastic! I feel like this series just gets better and better with each book. The investigation into Richter has been very exciting and while it is continuing throughout the series, you could actually read each book as a standalone. I highly recommend starting from the beginning only because I feel each book is fantastic.
It's funny how a side character that didn't stand out too much to me in previous books has become one of my favorites. I really liked Jax. Her personality, how she handled each situation and especially how she was with Andrew. Their growing romance was easy and fun despite being in a suspenseful situation. They were adorable and I love that.
This is one of those endings that you could say had just a bit of a cliffhanger. One part of the Richter investigation is over but there is so much more to learn and uncover. I really can't wait to see what will be next. I'm not even sure who the next couple will be. Either way, I will be waiting very impatiently for the next book.
This series has been one fascinating read after another. While the romance has not always been high on the storyline, this time it’s very much intertwined with everything that’s going on. Andrew and Jax were wonderful together. Their relationship did not fuel the drama, but it developed organically along the way. I couldn’t stop reading and this book quickly catapulted into my top favorite of the series.
I really liked how this mystery centered so much on Jax and her family as well as Richter. I didn’t have a clue who was doing what and where it was all going to end. Jax was an awesome heroine. While she was one tough individual, she also was fun, loyal, and dedicated. She didn’t appear to be hardened as much as others from Richter making her even more likeable to me.
Andrew was deliciously swoony in his courtship of Jax. He had a great sense of humor and it felt as though he were bringing something into her life she had been missing for so long. He wasn’t hugely alpha in his behaviors, but when it got down to the nitty gritty, there was no denying he would do anything for her.
This is definitely a pulse racing read with plenty of interaction with past characters and a nice little set up for future books in the series. I’m excited to see where it’s all going to go.
AN UNEXPECTED DISTRACTION (Richter Series Book #3) by Catherine Bybee is an exciting, fast-paced romantic suspense featuring another of the elite, highly trained women from Richter Academy who now works for McBain Security. While each book has a unique romance and subplot at that point in time, I feel it is better to read these books in order for maximum understanding.
Jacqueline “Jax” Simon’s world is changing. Her best friend through Richter Academy, Claire is getting married. As they begin their wedding plans, Jax receives a mysterious call from her brother to return home to London. Her parents have separated and since neither will talk about why, Jax begins to investigate. What she may discover as she investigates their separation and pasts may also be the reason why they sent her to Richter.
Andrew Craig is doing Jax’s brother a favor by picking her up at Heathrow Airport. He is instantly taken with this blonde beauty who is frank about her family and who believes Andrew is just her driver and not a family friend. He knows Jax wants to return to California, but he is on a mission to make her want to stay in England. This man of finance does not know the full extent of Jax’s life, but he is about to learn some truths quickly.
As the attraction between Jax and Andrew grows, so does the threat of secrets unknown.
I really love this series. It is fun to read all the suspense and intrigue involved in the McBain Security investigations. Unlimited money and gadgets, world travel and always a kick-butt female Richter graduate right in in the middle of the action. Jax’s world on the surface is familiar to Andrew, but as he learns more, he realizes that there is much more to discover and when he does, he does not run the other way. There are sex scenes, but they are not explicit. I was glad Jax was able to connect with her family on a more personal level. I also enjoy catching up with all the other characters in this series from previous books. The men and women of McBain Security are always there for each other. I am very happy there will be at least one more book in this series foreshadowed by the slight cliff-hanger ending regarding Richter.
I highly recommend this third Richter book and the entire series!
4 stars. Another great addition to the series. I seriously love the ongoing storyline and want SO BADLY to know how it ends now.
This book was good- but it the audiobook was horrendous. The narrator is terrible at British accents, which is surprising because she’s been good with all the others in this series. I seriously was cringing at the dialogue portions between the H&h! I’m sure this book is much more enjoyable if read.
Safe; no om/ow drama, no scenes with om/ow, no cheating between MCs, hero not a manwhore, cheating relating to the side characters.

An Unexpected Distraction is book 3 in the Richter series of romantic suspense books.
This book is Jax's story. She is the main narrator (3rd person POV). However there are also a few other narrators, including the male 3rd person POV.
I would say that this book could be read as a standalone. However Claire from Changing The Rules is in this book. As are many of the other people who work at MacBain Security, including Neil.
I really enjoyed this book. I absolutely loved the romance. I loved seeing Claire and Neil so much. At first the case was not overly interesting. But the second half was so strong. Overall this book kept my attention. And the end was really exciting and action-packed. Although I'm not sure that I loved the last few paragraphs. But can't wait to see what comes next!
Thanks to netgalley and Montlake Romance for allowing me to read this book.
Jax, one of the operatives of Mac Bain Security, travels back home after her brother’s panicked phone call. He won’t say much, but Jax quickly discovers all is not right with her parents and they’re headed for divorce. It soon becomes apparent that the divorce and the reason they sent Jax to the military boarding school, Richter, are intertwined. With rumors swirling that Richter may be going back to their nefarious ways, training the students to be deadly agents/assassins, the whole team gets involved with Jax’s investigation into her family’s past.
After a fun action packed start the story shifted and was very much focused on Jax and her family relationships, and the budding romance between her and Andrew. The trouble between Jax’s parents brings her relationship with them into focus and at first, I was really miffed at them. They shipped Jax off to a boarding school and didn’t really take an interest in her. The reasons behind that were revealed. I was pleased with changes between Jax and her mother. Her father was another story.
As more information is uncovered it’s decided a team must travel to Richter and see if they can ferret out information and see if the school is tuning back to their old ways. Jax and Andrew have the perfect cover: a couple in love. Not hard to pass off when the two are really falling for each other. Even though their relationship is new, it’s the kind you just know is right. Their time in Germany was playful, passionate, and steamy! I just loved it!
I’ve enjoyed all three books of the Richter series, a spinoff to Catherine Bybee’s First Wives series, mainly the last book, Say It Again. I think in a pinch you could read An Unexpected Distraction as a standalone, but you’d miss out on the previous romances and the history of Richter and how it played a part in this close-knit group of operatives. All three books are available through Kindle Unlimited as “read and listen for free” if you belong to that program.
An Unexpected Distraction was easy to get into and hard to put down! I stayed up late to finish as all hell was breaking loose and I had to see how it all turned out! While Jax and Andrew’s story wraps up, the ending made it imperative we get more! I look forward to the next one! A copy was kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.
Catherine Bybee has done it again! I am a HUGE fan of this series but there is always the worry that the next book won't live up to expectations. I certainly didn't need to worry with this book!
This series is based around a few badass women who work in dangerous undercover work/private investigation for a security company. They were raised in a corrupt boarding school which is an ongoing theme through the series. It is all quite complex and so I don't recommend reading this book as a standalone as you wouldn't get the most out of it but also because there are 2 fantastic books to read before this one!! They are a wonderful mix of romance and suspenseful drama and action.
This book is based around Jax, who I adored in the first 2 books but she really shines in this one. As everI loved her relationship with her best friend Claire but even more so was her relationship with her family which was really interesting. She is a fierce female and I just love her strength and intelligence but also her humour and at times, vulnerability. Her love interest Andrew is a wonderful cinnamon bun of a man but also strong and just what Jax needs. I would have liked a few more scenes of Andrew with his family members or friends but that isn't a big critique.
As ever with this series, the storyline was gripping and I couldn't put it down, so much so I read it in half a day!! The writing was brilliant but there were quite a few grammatical/wording errors in the ARC which hopefully get changed before the publishing date. My main reason for knocking off half a star is that there were a lit of American words and phrases used by British people. I think because Catherine Bybee is American she wrote it as she knew it, however there is no way an English person would call a scone a biscuit among other errors. It isn't a huge deal but the kind of attention to detail that stop me giving 5 stars.
I cannot wait for the next book and could not recommend this awesome series more to lovers of romance who also enjoy a little suspense and danger on the side. A truly brilliant series.
Please note that I was gifted this ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Jax Simon is called back to London by her brother due to a family emergency. She has never had a good relationship with her parents after they sent her to Richter. The super elite school that had hidden intentions with their pupils. On top of the trouble it seems that Richter is back to their old ways. So Jax is fighting on two fronts but she isn’t alone on this she has the McBain London team and her so called driver Andrew Craig.
Jax discovers secrets about her family unexpected in many ways but in the end it makes sense. I really was on the fence about Jax half the time. She is confident and good at her job. But when it came to her family dynamics she was throwing a pity party a lot of the time. Andrew is a great Hero just like all Hero’s CB writes. They are patient, loyal and supportive in every way but they are sometimes lack that spark. That spark I need in a hero.
There is no insta-attraction or insta-lust it is organic. It progresses as any normal romance does. I always enjoy a Catherine Bybee book and with this was no different but I think it be tighter. Overall enjoyable and a great read.
3.5 STARS This was a decent installment, but it was not on the same level as the first two books in the series. The suspense element was lacking, and I was not as invested in Jax's story as I had anticipated. Will definitely continue with the series, as I adore this world.
Audio - The British accents were atrocious and even though both MC were British, their voices were in American accents when not speaking direct quotes. If the same narrators continue, I will be switching to reading. They are good narrators, but need to stick with American accents.
I received an ARC for an honest review. Here's the honest truth: Speechless. I'm rarely am, if not ever lost for words, An Unexpected Distraction did just that. I received the copy a couple months ago, and I've been trying to find the right words to describe Bybee's latest distraction. I always crave her distractions. After telling the family I would be on my reading vacation, I sat down and devoured it. Yes, I mean devoured. The experience was like sitting down to all your favorite foods on a buffet. With each page, you crave more and more. You can't seem to swallow it fast enough. It's as if you're starving , and your mouth waters for the next page and the next. You gorge yourself to the point of no return. Just when you think you can't take anymore BOOM the ending hits you.
An Unexpected Distraction is the third book in the Richter series by Catherine Bybee. I've been waiting for Jax's story and it was everything I wanted it to be and more. She's such a great character. Fun, loyal, and kicks major butt. When she's called home for a family emergency, the driver who picks her up is actually her brother's friend, Andrew, but she doesn’t know that. There's an instant attraction and he seems like someone she can spend time with while she's back in London. But when something leads them back to Richter and she gets closer to Andrew, it seems she might not be running back to LA anytime soon. Andrew never thought he'd fall for his friend’s sister. It was just a favor that changed his life. He didn't realize how dangerous her job is, but he’s not put off by it. Even when the danger hits very close to home. Jax knows something more is going on with her parents and she gets to see a different side of her mom and I loved their relationship! I loved seeing Jax with her family, her friends and of course Andrew. It was also great seeing Neil, Gwen, Claire, Cooper and the others. I’ve missed them all! I loved Jax and Andrew’s story! It’s fun, action packed, a little sexy and heartwarming. Hoping to see more from these characters again!
Scored an ARC through a contest and could not have been more excited to jump back into the Richter Series! This can be read as a standalone but why miss out on the two amazing books that precede this brilliant adventure?!
Jax has found her place in life in California; even if that life doesn't include her immediate family or a relationship. When her brother calls her for help with family issues, she makes the trip back to England and ends up discovering that she may be missing out on family and on love. Andrew is unexpected and perfectly lovely. A solid and confident man who can accept that Jax is a strong woman with a dangerous job. Together, with the MacBain Security and Solutions team, they uncover secrets buried deep within Richter and within the families of current and former students.
Action, mystery, romance, family drama, and adventure come together in a novel that will keep you up late turning pages wondering who knows the secrets, what they are, and just what will happen if they are exposed. This is a book that will leave you wanting more of the story even days later!
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
This is the third book in the series - and I highly recommend that you read them in order. We first learned of Richter from Sasha in the First Wives series, so you might want to start there ... they are all very worthwhile reading!
Jax was unexpectedly sent to Richter by her wealthy parents. Years later, her life has been shaped by what she learned there, but she does now act for good, working for MacBain Security and Solutions. In this story the underlying plot of who is directing the actions of the educators at Richter continues to develop - and we find ourselves back there again - but at the same time Jax gets to discover something very, very unexpected about herself.
Perhaps more interesting though, is how Jax and her brother's best friend, Andrew find that there is strong chemistry between them. It is a bad time to discover this as so much is going on in Jax's life. But as we find out, Andrew is a solid, safe and loving guy, who lives a quite normal and stable life ... until he takes a holiday to Richter with Jax.
I love these books with such a dark undertone, and yet also the fun of love, and their family of choice, as well as the learning of how one's own family may have failed, or been blackmailed. It was great to catch up with the MacBain family too - everyone is a lot happier than they were in book 1!
So many loose ends, I do hope that the next book in the series will be released soon!
Intrigued was the first word that came to my mind as I read this book.
Going in I was a bit skeptic about liking it - I hadn't read the first two books in the series (but it can be read as a standalone) but as I continued reading, it became more exciting.
Very interesting book. Will be going back and reading the other books in the series.
I really enjoyed this thriller from Kathryn Bybee. There are some authors whom you just enjoy spending time reading because you know the currency of your time will not be wasted. That’s how I feel every single time I pick up a book by Ms. Bybee. Whether it’s a contemporary romance or thriller, it’s just amazing! An Unexpected Distraction is another example of her stellar writing. The thing I thought most interesting about this one is that it’s a departure from most of the things I’ve read for her. I’ve been following along with this series and the thing I love most is that it’s a departure from contemporary romance. The school mentioned in the story intrigues me. I have so many questions, like where are the other graduates? I feel like there’s an opportunity for many more books.
I just fell in love with all the characters. I especially love a bad a$$ heroine and Jax is all that and then some. I love the juxtaposition of Jax, a capable trained assassin being thrown off her game by love. I also loved that the hero, on the other hand, is a pencil-pushing accountant. A great guy, but with zero fighting skills. He knows the woman he’s falling in love with. He knows she is capable, and he doesn’t mind playing second fiddle when it comes to fighting the battle. I thoroughly enjoyed this one from start to finish. I encourage you to buy it and dare you not to read it again and again.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
Organic Romance - In A Romance Book???? Let's face it, so many times in a romance book, the romance feels at least somewhat contrived. "Oh, you're *really* going to go completely against your established character for this person you just randomly met?" kind of stuff. This isn't the case here. Instead, Bybee crafts one of the more genuinely organic romances I've ever seen in a romance book... while still having her lead female kick ass and take names later. Fans of the Richter books largely know what you're getting into here, and while this *does* work as a standalone, there *are* a lot of established external characters and backstories that you're going to want to know up front. Thus, while you don't have to go *all* the way back to its actual origins a couple of series ago, I absolutely recommend at minimum starting with Richter #1 and working your way to this book. But if you do... you're going to want to get here anyway. :) Very much recommended.
Wonderful read from Catherine Bybee. Really enjoyed Jax's story. This series can be read as a stand alone but it is worth reading all the books as they are all equally wonderful. Jax is called home by her brother to help with family issues. Her father has moved in with her brother and neither parent is letting them know what is wrong. Jax is not close with either of her parents but goes home to help. Andrew a friend of her brother picks her up at the airport but she mistakes him as a driver. Richter the German military school plays a part of the storyline. This is the school for spies and assassins that Jax attended when she was a child. Loved reading Jax's history and watching Andrew worm his way into her heart. Highly recommend.
Received this book as an ARC from Netgalley for my honest opinion.
Thank you, NetGalley for an eARC for which I provided an honest opinion.
I would like to say that I enjoyed it. The open ending means another book in the series that I shall impatiently wait for but the pacing was amazing. There was considerably less action and more plot building in this book which I prefer. Catherine Bybee writes amazing stories with beautiful pacing that doesn't feel long at all. It was a quick read, 4/5. I have read all the books in this series, and this one is by far my favorite. I liked her new installation of the "villain" POV. It provided a nice change into the mind, although in this book, the ending was unclear which is why I didn't give it a higher rating.
An Unexpected Distraction by Catherine Bybee a thrilling five-star read. This is number three in the Richter series, and in my opinion it’s the best of the series, I enjoyed the first two, but this one, blew me away. It wasn’t just Jax that has me so gripped, they could be read as stand-alone at a push, but other characters do pop up and leave you wanting more. There are so many good points about this story, relationship building and drama a plenty. I expected a good story like the first two, but I ended with a great story.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat! It’s fast paced, sometimes presenting more questions than answers. The interactions and close relationship of the MacBain team make great story building, and the chemistry and romance add to the drama and suspense to bring together a page turning mystery. Jax and Andrew are wonderful characters, and I loved their story! I hope to see more in this series!
Never disappointed by a Catherine Bybee book. Part of a series but can be read as a stand alone book. Enjoy the romance, intrigue and spy craft. A family secret fractures Jax family and has long reaching ramifications but also draws strained relatives closer. A page turner as always. Enjoy I did
I've been so intrigued by all of the books in the Richter series thus far and An Unexpected Distraction was no different. Catherine Bybee has a way of creating a story where you're pulled in from the very beginning and you're kept on the edge of your seat as you progress through the book.
Jacqueline "Jax" Simons, who attended Richter Boarding School during high school, now works for McBain Security where she uses the skills she mastered during her years at Richter to work as a private investigator. While she grew up in Europe, she's lived in California for the past six years and she's love every minute of it. When she gets a call from her brother that she needs to come home, she knows something big must be up, as she hasn't been close to her family for a very long time. With it being a family issue, she does what she knows she should and boards a flight.
Andrew Craig is the friend of Jax's brother, Harry, and he does his buddy a favor by picking up his sister at the airport when she arrives. He's not forthcoming with exactly who he is, so Jax thinks he's just a driver who was hired to pick her up. He would like nothing more than the opportunity to see Jax again, so he heads to her hotel, where that happens. The two find that there is a definite attraction between them, but can anything come of it?
Jax ends up getting an assignment that will keep her in Europe for a while longer. Not only that, but the family matters are keeping her there longer as well. Andrew ends up playing a role in the assignment she's given since the two are dating. It gives her a good cover, but it also gives Andrew a true look into how dangerous the work that Jax does can be. Will he be able to handle it? Will Jax be able to get herself out of a difficult spot that she finds herself in?
As I mentioned at the outset, this series has been so good and this one was no exception. We were certainly set up for a forthcoming book, which makes me excited. I'm always up for any book that Bybee pens for us!
**I voluntarily read an early copy of this title courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**
I have read all of Catherine Bybee's books and each time I read one I say it is my favorite. Well, this may be truly the case with An Unexpected Distraction.
Catherine is a master of bringing the story to life When I picked up the book I thought I will just get chapters in tonight. Ha! I was up into the wee hours of the morning, which was about halfway through.
This series is so much fun as these kicka$$ woman are so lethal! Even when they are in impossible situations, they manage to come out alive.
Jax, a previous student at Richter, has been working for Neil MacBain when her brother calls her home to England. She has not had any sort of relationship with her parents and very little with her brother so when he asks, she comes to help.
Along the way, she meets Andrew and they with MacBain Securities are digging into the current situation at Richter and her parents connection.
There is almost non-stop action, twists and turns, and a growing attraction between Jax and Andrew. It was hard to put the book down as I wanted to know why Jax's parents were separated, what it had to do with her time at Richter, and is there a new player leading at Richter.
4.5/5.0 What a great read!! The suspense and mystery aspects are nail-biting, heart-thumping fun and the romance is sigh-worthy and completely believable. Each of these aspects is intertwined so perfectly that none overwhelm the others- NOT an easy feat!
Jax and Andrew’s developing love is delightfully refreshing, as well. Usually in a suspense, the male is the alpha with the girl kicking A beside him. In this story, that scenario is completely flipped. Don’t get me wrong, Andrew is a strong, capable character, but he is a regular, albeit successful, businessman who just happens to fall for the girl operative. There is humor right along with the intrigue, as he rises to the occasion and learns to help support and protect her.
And, of course, there is the engaging readability and the perfect ending that this author is so famous for, making this story the absolute perfect escape!
For those who follow my reviews, you know that I never miss a Catherine Bybee release. There is just something in her stories that keeps me coming back for more every single time. It could be the incredible characters, the amazing storyline filled with suspense, romance, laughter and even a little bit of heartbreak, or it could be that she always manages to surprise me, no matter how many books of hers I've read. But most likely, it's a combination of all. And in true Bybee fashion, that's exactly the case with An Unexpected Distraction.
To be honest, I've been intrigued by Jax from the very first book in The Richter Series and I always knew it will be a special one. And this latest instalment in the series definitely didn't disappoint. With every single page I was getting more and more engrossed into the story- from Jax unearthing very well kept secrets leading her on a dangerous path, through rebuilding her relationship with her mother, to finding the man who can be her equal and would be her perfect other half. And all that makes the perfect cocktail to snuggle up with on a cold winter night.
I am not going to go into details because I don't want to spoil the story for anyone. The one thing I would say is that this is a must read in my opinion. I so can't wait to find out what happens next in this amazing world because that ending just left too many open doors ;) Btw, the book doesn't end up in a cliffie. Just thought I will clarify :D
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange of an honest review
An Unexpected Distraction by Catherine Bybee is the third book in the Richter series. Each book can be easily read as a stand alone, but the series is getting better and better as we learn more about the school and the characters.
Jax is mostly estranged from her family and not just in physical distance. So when her brother called and told her to come home, she knew it must be serious. He didn’t meet her at the airport but sent a drive. She was not pleased. Only the driver isn’t just a driver, but a friend of her brothers. So the first meeting of the couple happens. However their story is entwined with figuring out what exactly is going on with Jax’s family and what that has to do with Richter. Eventually the entire team is over in Great Britain working on the case. Jax’s family secrets are slowly eeking out and each answer leads to more questions.
I enjoy Catherine Bybee’s novels. She is definitely a go-to author for me. I love how her stories roll out and her characters are interesting. This particular series is fascinating to me with all the twists and turns! An Unexpected Distraction by Catherine Bybee is a great read.
Enjoyable story, especially if you're familiar with the first two books in this series. Wouldn't recommend the audiobook though because the female narrator's interpretation of British accents and the various European accents was absolutely terrible and made it impossible to remain immersed in the story.
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads, so here is my review. I have waited for Jax's story and it was an unexpected surprise. When her brother calls and needs her help, she doesn't hesitate to jump on a plane and fly back to London. As she learns about her parent's separation, she also learns more about herself. Along the way, she meets her brother's best friend. Andrew is mistaken for a hired driver sent to pick her up at the airport and look after her until she meets up with her brother. The sparks begin to fly from the moment Jax and Andrew meet. She doesn't hold it against him that he didn't tell her from the start who he really was. As they spend more time together, they learn more about each other and that they want to be there for the other. When they head back to Richter and things get a little hairy, Andrew learns a little about what Jax's job is. I loved the first two stories but this one is my favorite so far. It was filled with suspense, intrigue, and more romance than the others. Jax and Andrew were the perfect couple, almost to the point of finishing each other's sentences. I hope there will be more to continue this series, I want more. I highly recommend reading them in order, you do not want to miss anything.
