Victoria DeLuis is a short story author and novelist, who loves reading – everything – and writing paranormal cosy mysteries, light urban fantasy, supernatural romantic suspense, and the occasional sci-fi.
She was born and raised in South Wales, where she still lives with her husband, daughter, three overlord cats and a doting dog. This offers her a rich heritage and mythology to use in her stories.
An interesting introduction to the magic world of Eira Snow, who recently has returned to small-town life after a bit of a messy divorce. Eira is a witch who can work magic and now she has opened a shop that sells potions, and it is while she is on a business errant that she fortuitously comes across the dead body of one Tanya. To the ordinary eye, everything is set up to look like the perfect accident, but then Eira is one of a kind: she can see and talk to ghosts. Immediately on discovery, Tanya's ghost appears to Eira and tells her that this death was no accident but rather a carefully calculated murder. Consequently Eira is then sucked into the mystery as she investigates what happened.
I liked Eira a lot but cannot give the details of how she went about solving this one, because that would be so spoilery. A supporting character to really like is Fleur, a teenager who soon comes into Eira's employ and has witching talents of her own. Other side characters aren't as fully developed.
The book is short and a fast reader can finish it in a day. Try this one for a little bit of magic and murder.
Eira Snow has moved back to the town of her birth in Wales after her divorce. She was born a witch and her mother was a witch. She opened a shop in town selling potions and such as before she just had an online business. She goes to a customers home as requested to drop off an order and notices the door is open on the house next door. She goes over and knocks, no answer, she looks and sees a dead woman at the bottom of the stairs. She calls the police and a woman detective shows up but before she does Eira sees the ghost of the dead woman who asks her to find out who killed her and then another woman ghost appears who the first is very happy to see and they both slowly fade away.
Eira now feels it's her mission to find out who killed her and she doesn't even know her. The police just think it was just a tragic accident.
This is a new series and I liked the characters and it being in Wales. Looking forward to reading the next in the series. It was also a new to me author.
I adore Victoria DeLuis writing style. Easy to slip into, but just complicated enough to get your cogs whirring! This first book in the Eira Snow series is no different. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely look forward to reading the next adventure for the kind hearted, feisty witch. 😁
Eira moved to her to her birth place after divorcing her husband. She is excited about her shop. Eira takes an order a customer placed with her. She finds an open door to her customer's neighbor house open. Eira finds the body of a dead woman. Eira tells the police she doesn't think it was an accident. Eira is at the shop when young woman named Fleur sees her doing magic. Eira is suprised that Fleur can do magic, so she is going to help her. Her customers son comes to the shop to pay for the items his mother received and ask about why Eira thinks it is a murder. Aaron and Eira go to speak to people that knew the woman that passed. Eira is getting involved into a something she could not foresee.
This was a entertaining story of Eira. She is a witch and she is starting over at 40 after what happened with her husband. She is meets some interesting characters. Aaron and others are not what they seem. You will be suprised by who did the crime, the true personalities of the characters. I am looking forward to more of this character and others in this book and the adventures they encounter.
I really enjoyed this story. This would be a great read for those who don’t like curse words or don’t want to read a book with sex in it. It is a well written and clean read. Can’t wait to read the next one!
This is SUCH a fabulous paracozy! The mystery is compelling with plenty of twists, and the resolution is a bit sad but logical. The mystical elements sprinkled throughout are appropriate and realistically integrated into the story. The use of gemstones/minerals to describe color is an imaginative touch based on the protagonist's avocation, and the descriptions of the village provide a fine sense of place, but I'd like to be able to visualize Eira better.
I really think the characters are a large part of what makes this story shine, with strong female players. Eira doesn't come across as the typical 40-plus, divorced, "my body isn't what it used to be" type; she hasn't even closed the door on having her own little witchling to train! She's warm, confident, and utterly likable! Niles is her cat (and then some!) familiar; I'd like to know more of their history. Fleur is Eira's new apprentice, and there's definitely fodder for an intriguing backstory there! Kate is the Detective Inspector investigating the possible murder that Eira stumbles upon; she's no-nonsense and competent and would make a good friend as Eira settles into her new home, and there are a couple of hints that Kate is noticing some things.
“Where there’s a Witch, there’s a Way”, Victoria DeLuis first book in her “Eira Snow Cozy Mystery” series feels like a good praline after dinner, pleasing, enjoyable and gratifying.
Eira Snow, forty-one years old divorcee, decides to star a new life by opening an esoteric shop back in her hometown, a good choice as Eira is a witch – in the broom closet of course, no point in provoking the town people more than necessary – and knows her craft. However, Eira wasn’t counting on being accosted by a ghost, convinced her death isn’t an accident, a magic groupie looking for an apprenticeship and the hot son of one of the clients insisting on taking her out for breakfast & dinner. Eira is nothing but resourceful thus, joggling affection, mentoring and solving the crime in her very special way to the utmost enjoyment of the reader.
Victory DeLuis story is funny and witty, cozy without kitsch, a very good mix of paranormal romance and mystery, fast-paced and entertaining for start to finish. A great new series, with a re-imagined modern Mrs. Marple that finds a way no matter what, to solve the riddle, deflect the suspicions and bypass expletives.
With Eira’s new shop, Crystal Magic, a spiritual shop, just recently opened she didn’t need the complication of what to do about the dead person she found. She called the police and from then on so many twists and turns wiggled their way into the story. Almost everyone related to the dead woman ended up a suspect. But in the end, you would never have guessed who the real killer was. I’m not usually a cozy mystery type of reader but I was familiar with Victoria DeLuis and many of her books so I picked this one up and started reading. I’m glad I did and I will be reading the next one shortly. I don’t think you could go wrong reading this. It was delightful.
A paranormal cosy mystery, set in South Wales, UK, and featuring a witch, her amazing familiar, and her new apprentice.
When Eira Snow discovers a dead body, she finds herself investigating the mystery and the people connected to it!
This entertaining read has lots of magic, a little witchcraft, and a few mysteries in it. With an entertaining cast of characters, it’s an enjoyable read for someone who is trying to sit back and relax.
What a fantastic book! This is a very entertaining cozy mystery. The twists and turns of the mystery were unexpected and kept me guessing the whole time. I really liked the characters and look forward to reading more!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I liked the story. It was well thought out but there were a number of editing errors. I'm the kind of reader that has to correct the error before going to the sentence.
If you like witches, familiars, magic & mayhem then you got the right one. When you are new to all of the above as a witch but have a curious mind, you tend to get into uncomfortable situations. Good thing you have good friends for back up.
The first in a new series, this book was an excellent introduction to a new-to-me writer. The paranormal mystery has an exceptional quality that most of them don't come close to having, that of being a fantastic mystery with or without the paranormal element. Well done!
Finding a woman's body not too long after she returns to her birthplace was not Eira's idea of a good omen. But it also piques her her curiosity. When the ghost of the woman tells her she was pushed down the stairs, Eira's is hooked. Oh yeah, Eira's is a witch. I enjoyed every minute of it!
A new-to-me author who has written an excellent start to a new series. Eira Snow, a newly divorced 40 yr old witch returns to her hometown for a fresh start. Being in a smaller town, she tries to get her neighbours to become patrons by doing home deliveries and hopefully getting to know them better, but being in the wrong place at the wrong time? She stumbles across Tanya's dead body and her ghost as well, who is determined that she has been murdered. So how do you tell the police that what seems to be an honest to goodness accident is murder, without 1. involving the ghost, 2. letting on you are a witch and 3. without seeming involved in some way, perhaps even being the murderer herself?
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is cleverly written, with many possible suspects and scenarios that kept me guessing for some while. And Fleur is a delight, so full of bounce and energy and optimism - a total breath of fresh air!
Wonder how it is pronounced? Interesting characters and a really good mystery. Loved the bleeping. Still some unanswered questions. Will add to my wishlist.
This was an interesting first book for a series opener and I loved how Eira took fledgling witch-wannabe Fleur under her wing. Her enthusiasm must've been contagious. Kate was a good cop character since she didn't come storming in ready to arrest Eira just because she found the body and just to close the case. I had my doubts about someone Eira met because he was just a little too eager to sleuth and hang out with her.
The reason Tanya was murdered was a pretty sad one and so totally unavoidable but the showdown was good and Eira's awesome familiar saved the day. Speaking of awesome cats, little Abby who'd been the dead woman's cat got her happily ever after in the form of a new human. I'm definitely interested in reading the next book and look to borrow it from KU soon.
This is a nice quick mystery read. Eira Snow is a witch and after a messy divorce has moved back to Caerleon South Wales. There’s some good characters and a real feel good vibe about this. It’s a clean read which is fine I don’t need either sex or bad language but… The bleep and bleeping got on my nerves.
“I may have bleeping fallen down the bleeping stairs,”
If you’re not going to have swearing in the books then don’t have your characters swear. Every bleep took me out of the book.
I had another couple of small issues but I’m sitting on them since this isn’t a negative review. I enjoyed this book and at some point I’ll read the rest of the series
Not bad at all. Typical cozy mystery crutches - the individual who becomes best friend in the space of six heartbeats, and a small-business owner who can drop everything whenever convenient to solve the murder - get on my nerves, but they don't really harm this one. I'm not fond of any of the male characters, but again, that's my preference.
I received this book through a free e-book site, and while I'm not opposed to reading the next installment, I didn't find it fascinating enough to go buy it immediately.
I read this book in one sitting. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, plot and location. So many aspects to the mystery made it very interesting. I highly recommend.
A different twist on a paranormal cozy mystery. More than one murder is solved. Familiars abound. I especially enjoyed how one familiar was able to shift. Got to love those familiars.
Lots of great characters in a believable storyline will keep you turning pages till the last page. I was pleasantly surprised with how quickly the author's writing style draws you into the story, a great read, Baz.
An enchanting little story with a witch, her apprentice, and some friends and enemies, along with a police chief who is quite accommodating. Quite a few typos but fun reading.
I got caught up reading this because the plot flowed so well. The characters serve the plot beautifully, introducing complications when you think you know who murdered Tanya.
