After reading an editorial claiming Dungeons and Dragons drove kids to worship dark forces in the sewers, C.M. Carney's mother immediately bought it for him. He was ten, and it's probably a good thing he was afraid of sewers. Since then he has been obsessed with reading, writing and playing all things fantasy and science fiction.
After spending nearly two decades working as a creative executive for an animation and SFX studio, C.M. decided to pursue his lifelong dream of writing and publishing novels and short stories. He writes sci-fi, fantasy and LitRPG that run the gamut from epic to humorous.
His first novel Barrow King: Book One of The Realms was published in February 2018 and became a #1 Bestseller. The Realms now spans eight books with the ninth and final installment currently being written. His second series, The Quintessence: Crucible, blends cultivation fantasy with measured progression, with two books out and more on the way. Both series are available in ebook, audiobook (narrated by Armen Taylor and Nick Podehl), and print. He also has several other series in the works across multiple genres.
He loves hearing from fans, like minded thinkers and anyone else who shares his dislike of sewers.
I soaked this damn book up like a sponge. I couldn't put it down and finished it in three-ish days (I don't count the 6 pages I read before passing out on the 27th). There was such an incredible amount of character development, story progression, plot twists, and more. Carney took a simple genre concept of LITRPG and ran with it, creating this amazing series with characters that I've grown so fond of (and some I despise with a passion, but that's for a good reason).
I could totally see this world that Carney created becoming a super series with different novellas, side stories, and other series involving different historical points in the Realms. Especially with the introduction/explanations of historical events.
*SEMI VAGUE SPOILERS?!*
This change in the storyline allows so much more potential futures to unfold. It also opened up the realization that there's more than just the big bad Aluran. There are other people stronger than him that even he is scared of.
Thank you fir the enjoyable story. I wasn’t sure reading the first book but I am sure glad I stuck with it. I apologize for the 4 star rating as your work deserves better but with a limiting rating of only 5 stars, shrug. I had thought it a bit suspicious when the explanation of why he had sworn himself to her. More doubts were planted when we were told he would leave from time to time always coming back. I even went back and forth wondering if he was the high gods highly planted spy. That was as far as my musings went. Thanks for the surprise. The immediate lead up to the reveal was nearly to much but still well done.
The epic confrontation continues as the ideals of gods are tested
The exciting reentry to the Realms is not what I expected and Finn is in a bad place at the mercy of others again. Trying to gather information and find a way back to the Realms, to protect it from the gods cray plans.
The story and conflict grows as three gods fight to change reality or prevent that from happening. Misguided they may all be but sometimes the noblest path is the hardest to walk, as is being honest with yourself and your limits, something you can forget after 2000 years of life.
Whether the Light’s claims of endless torture and rebirth of souls is true or not, their methods and plans do not mesh well with Aluran’s or Gryph’s plans, leading to a 3-way war. The question is who will strike first and where?
The Ravaged Land looks to wrap up many loose threads at once as we move to the series finale. Action, forced comic relief and lots of death abound. But fans of the series will enjoy this installment with a surprise reveal at the fag end. You win some you loose some but given the authors penchant for a giving a way out even for permanently dead characters hope to see the major cast reunited when all is said and done. looking to read the next in the series.
Another good outing from Mr. Carney. The twists are a little telegraphed, but not bad nonetheless.
One gripe though:
Maybe I just noticed it but everything is game breaking or game changing or... Not everything can be that. Things can be important without everything being a game changer or said synonym. It feels like every chapter of this book had a game changing revelation
I greatly recommend this book. It is very much an heir to the epic fantasy novels like the dark tower, with powerful characters going on long adventures where the stakes raise equivalently with each adventure - culminating in this wonderful ode toward the finale which will be the next book.
I wasn't sure where this first book was going, but the characters continued to evolve as the plot kept growing larger and larger. Wow, what a rollercoaster ride. Once you get into the flow, it will grip your attention and n ot let go. I was unhappy at the end of book 7 because now I have to wait until book 8 gets released. Please hurry!
More griff - all griff really and the story really moves forward. Lots of stat increases as well. Some very minor stat weirdness - griff gets +100 to multiple stats twice this story and then talks about the surge in strength from a temporary +5 burst from his coatl. Not a huge deal but stuck out to me. Interested for the change of scenery the next one promises
Very good series. I like the world this takes place in and the characters are well rounded. The antagonists are a little bit predictable, but not to the point of boredom. Lex is a good support character, if you're ok with him being the tropeyest trope that ever troped. All of the other support characters are typical, but also enjoyable. On to book 8!
Great build-up to the end. This book is filled with action and returns favorite characters from previous books in the series. I almost threw my Kindle across the room when the final chapter ended in such a moment of tension. Thankfully the epilogue took some of that tension away and set up for the next book!
Great book and great series can’t recommend it highly enough and can’t wait till the next one is out! Lex is amazingly awesome and looking forward to more of him next time!
One of the best series out there. This continuation just raises the bar. It both clarifies and brings out a whole other slew of questions. Can’t wait for Book 8.
Yet Another Amazing continuation in the Saga of Gryph
Fantastic book! Has definitely paid off in the intrigue and story leading up to it so far. I fully recommend this book and series to anyone who enjoyed litrpg, D&D, or sci-fi fantasy
For reasons I still cannot determine, Carney writes in a way that gets me in the minds of each character he describes. Rarely do I feel as connected to characters as I do in The Realms. Not to mention the fantastic world he has created with his story building
Wow, another great one by CM Carney. The audiobook took a bit longer to come out, and it was 100% worth the wait! Armen Taylor does an amazing job narrating and the story is so well done. Loved all the characters being back, that reveal at the end was *chef's kiss*. I can't wait for the next one.
The twists and turns were great! The new characters reveals were inspired and the story co to yes to unfold perfectly. Cannot wait for the next and final chapter to this series!
A great addition to the storyline, filled with the amazing characters, world building, magic, action, and lore that we have come to expect from the author. Well done!
Once started, could not stop reading. Great pacing and relatable characters. Plot is unique and leaves you wanting more. Will wait impatiently for next installment
