Rexanne Becnel is the author of more than twenty historical romance and contemporary mainstream novels, many of which appeared on the USA Today bestseller list. With the publication of her first novel, My Gallant Enemy, Becnel won the Waldenbooks Award for Best First-Time Romance Author and the Romantic Times Award for Best Medieval Romance by a New Author. While growing up, Becnel lived for a time in Germany and England, where she became fascinated by medieval history. After studying architecture at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, she worked as a building inspector for the Vieux Carré Commission, the agency of the City of New Orleans charged with protecting and preserving the distinct architectural and historic character of the French Quarter. Becnel lives in New Orleans with her husband and two children.
I know I got this book from off of one of the romance blogs I read but I can't remember which one. It's a really charming story about three women who are from Louisiana but now live in California. They are all facing a crossroads in their lives. Cat is an interior designer. She has married two men, both drunken cheats, and is more than a little cynical about the entire species. But when she goes back to Louisiana, she learns that the family that she always thought was hopeless, might not be that bad. She also hooks up with a high school flame who is now the sheriff. Bitsey is married to Jack, but she's unhappy. She never lost weight from carrying three babies and she and Jack are drifting further and further apart. Her thirtieth high school reunion sparks a need for her to lose weight, but it also brings back a chance to reunite with her own ex from high school. MJ is the one who sparks the road trip. Her husband just died in the arms of a transvestite hostess and left her with little money and no visible means of support. She also meets up with a man from her past but is more interested in the man who's working on her car. The story switches between the first person perspective for each of th women. It's a great conceit and well handled by the author. I don't know if I'll specifically look for more books by this author but I really just enjoyed this story.
At first, I have second thought of reading it because. 1.) It's like for adults because of the ages and status of characters 2.) I didn't thought I can understand this story because it's all about adulthood. But in the middle part of the book, I got hooked. Well, it was about like some sort of an adventure of seeing their ex boyfriends during their high school and receiving their second chances on their love lives.
I was like fascinated with their love life and how they would ever find their happy endings, to solve their family problems and to face the threat of divorce. But in the end, they all came happy with what their decisions and choices.
But like other fiction books, it was a full happy love story for the three ladies. They soon learned their lessons and faces their consequences when it comes to their choices. It was like an advanced study to me of being a mother, or an adult, someone who is a like 40 or something years old and love doesn't choose age on when will you experience the true essence of it..
What a fun read! Who hasn’t wondered about past boyfriends? In this tale of three women, each with their own struggles, head to a high school reunion with the intent of meeting old flames. The story takes off from there. A story of life, friendships and humor.
"Road Trip for three? They were three girlfriends whose lives had seen better days, and they were driving to a reunion in New Orleans, the town they'd left behind.
MJ, a gorgeous younger woman whose older husband died in the bed of...well, let's just say he died in a compromising position; Bitsey, an overweight housewife who can't believe that's all there is; and Cat, a twice-divorced designer whose pristine present is small compensation for her past.
The trophy wife, prom queen and trashy girl had a vision: the men of their present didn't hold a candle to the boys in their past."
Three New Orleans natives living in Southern California decide to take a road trip back to one's high school reunion. Bitsy, an unhappily married woman, Cat. twice divorced and M. J., a widow who's older husband has died under scandalous circumstances set out on a journey. They also want to meet up with their high school boyfriends to see if they had made the right choices in who they masrried. It turns out differently than they expected and the road to their happily ever after (?) endings makes for a good story.
I really like Rexanne Becnel's voice and I loved the Harlequin NEXT line for the short time it lasted. This was a good read and the author did a great job of telling all three women's stories in first person which would be dicey with a less skilled author. A good read if you like women's fiction.
A girlfriend book for the "over-40s" to take to the beach. Girls get even, take a road trip, plus find love with old boyfriends and new ones. Good read.
