Katie Hyer was minding her own business, hauling ore for Cobalt Mining, when a mysterious ship appears suddenly out of the black, nearly sideswiping her. It soon becomes clear that same ship is inbound for the mining platform she calls home.
When the secessionists on board take Sierra Twelve hostage, Katie will go to any lengths to free her friends and family-even if it means waging her own personal war of attrition.
L.L. Richman has a diverse career background, having spent more than a decade working in radiation physics, and twice that as a director of film and video. Richman is also a pilot and has close ties to the special forces community.
Richman's series feature the pulse-pounding action of small mission units set in the future and near future. Woven into each story is a scientific backdrop that is, if not plausible, at least grounded in some aspect of hard science.

I found myself reading this novel straight forward to see what will happen next. It really is a page turner. Katie Hyer is an orphan making her living by collecting metal ores for Cobalt Mining. Her collection in Cobalt Mining Section Twelve is cut short by an unknown known ship flying dark. The ship running dark had run-in with an Alliance Navy Vessel. The Scimitar, a fast action Helios utility ship was taking a Special Recon Group group to an impromptu war game at the decommissioned platform the dark-running ship is heading towards. The dark running ship that passed very close to Katie’s ship, The Goblin, is a Secede Sirius ship. They are on target to platform Sierra Twelve. Then the action begins. Katie decides to follow the SS ship. The war game is canceled and The Scimitar with the Special Recon Group group onboard is directed to do what they do best — engage and interdict opposing forces — in conjunction with their war game opponents. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Katie has entered the platform with an intent to take out the invaders. Operation Cobalt is filled with action as Katie and the Recon Group work towards taking out the secessionists and rescuing the hostages they have captured. If you like novels that have a resourceful young heroine with the initiative to decide to counter a group of really bad guys while not realizing the recon group is also looking take out the invaders. And oh yes, she has to worry about her traveling companion, Fred the dog. It all comes together in a logical way that leads to a satisfying conclusion. With an 18 year old heroine don’t think for a minute the is a YA novel. It has a YA heroine but what happens in it is all adult grade.
Excuse me while I rave. I LOVED Operation Cobalt! This is my favorite of ALL of L.L. Richman’s great books that I’ve read! It starts out with a bang and continues with fast paced action while also providing intervals that allow the reader to catch their breath. I was continually amazed at Katie’s ingenuity, brilliance, unthinking courage, and heart. The characters are wonderful and the plot is straightforward and believable. I’m going to need more Katie (How about a boot camp tale?) and more Navy Team Five! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader copy of this book.
Another great story in my favourite SciFi universe. Lisa Richman’s Chiral series just keep getting better and better with this “prequel” setting a very high standard indeed.
With consistent, believable science and technology as well as great characterisations and intelligent plots I can give all the Chiral books my highest recommendation.
Horrifying the conditions in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They possess 80% of the world’s cobalt - the stuff we need to charge our phones and cars. Yet, the ‘artisanal’ miners for cobalt make $1 a day…rampant child labor and horrifying work conditions. Apple, Tesla, Samsung need to do better overseeing where their billions is coming from to enforce a better system for the resource they so desperately need.
This was a really fun book that ended too soon as I wanted to watch more what the characters got into. The main character was interesting, got into a lot of fun high tech hi jinx and adventure, and they even have a dog. I really enjoyed this book and hope to see these characters in other books in this universe. I definitely recommend this book and universe.
From the very first page, this book takes off. If you don’t have your running shoes on, you will be left behind. The author gives you the basics and sets a fast pace. Never a dull spot to make you wonder why you are reading this book. McGuiver and Star Wars rolled into one reading. I’m ready for the next installment…..
I'm a new reader to L. L. Richman and am very happy to be. This is the second book of the author that I have read in the last 24 hours. I have also signed up for the mailing list. Brilliantly written and thoroughly enjoyable. Please publish further books ASAP!
Nice easy fun read. Like space operas? Then you will like this. Set of radicals take over a space station and that goes as planed but what they didn't see coming was a feisty 18 year old ore hauler pilot. Add in the space marines that show up after her and it's fast paced and fun. As long as your not one of the radicals.
I enjoyed this book very much. The explanation of the tech used to circumvent the terrorist team on the space station was well thought out and believable. I look forward to more in this series.
I'm haven't been a big fan of military sci fi the last few years, but I enjoyed Cobalt. Team 5 and Katie are wonderful characters. There is more techno babble than I like, but the story is great. I will be reading more in this series.
Great story. Really liked Katie in this one. At first, the story is a bit disjointed, but it settles down, and you get a pretty good feel for who's who. After that, it's just plain old great storytelling. Now, I definitely want to read more in this series.
It took a bit to follow the storyline in the beginning but it evolved into a riveting story. The technology was intriguing and made for clever ways for the story to progress. I’ll be reading more in this series.
I never really know what to write in these reviews, but I really enjoyed this book, and all of the other books in the series. If you like smart, fast paced military science fiction, you'll enjoy this book! Highly recommend 👍
A good prelude to Lisa Richman's Chiral series involving characters for the series and an informative look on the origin of Katie Hyer and where her initial skill set developed.
Nice quick fun read. I'd like to know how the main character goes on but I'm not sure they will let a dog join the navy. My first time reading this author I think.
Operation Cobalt is awesome! The MC Katie Hyer, inspite of her age, is already a kickass protagonist! She's smart and willing to do what's necessary to stop the terrorist from taking over the Space Station, Cobalt mining, and the only place that she called home! The is actually a prequel novella to the Chiral Agent introducing several of the main players that you'll see in all the books!
Here's a few of my favorite bits that I pulled from the tale!
"...remember the OODA Loop.” Slater’s voice rang in her head, his words as clear as if he was walking alongside her. “Observe. Orient. Decide. Act. These steps may save your life one day.”
“Most platforms have a small group of kids, employees’ children, who are raised there,” he explained. “Platform rats are easily bored, stuck on a small station like this for long periods of time. They can get into an interesting amount of trouble when left on their own.”
“Remember what Doc always says: ‘Luck is the residue of preparation.’ Icing on the cake, nothing more.”
"{That’s your plan… To blow it up?} Asha deadpanned, her tone stopping just short of incredulity."
