When Harry Potter, of all people, offers to help Draco erase his Dark Mark, he has no choice but to accept. He wants it gone. He wants to forget. He wants to reconstitute the past. Never mind that erasures leave real marks on bodies, real traces on the world in its becoming. This is not how he expected his eighth year to go.
3.5* I really enjoyed this one, though I did find the characters the least authentic to canon. I loved the concept but it could have benefited from feeling a lot darker considering what it was dealing with. I did enjoy that it was set back at Hogwarts, and I like the idea of them returning for an eighth year after the war.
As much as I love the trauma/healing/comfort trope, the actual magic Harry was helping Draco with didn't feel believable. Harry was historically terrible at occlumency, and there's no way a spell involving removing memories and traces wouldn't hinge on the same thing. It also didn't make sense (aside from it obviously setting up the close relationship between Harry and Draco) that they wouldn't have just had Hermione (or better yet, a professional healer) helping them, especially since Harry was always suggesting he ask her about aspects of it all. I love Harry but he was never the best at spellwork that wasn't defensive magic. I also felt like Harry would not have been as chill and well adjusted as he was in this fic SO SOON after the war, even if he'd seen a mind healer like he said.
I did enjoy that this was a Draco perspective story.
I did find it a sweet, comforting fluff read (despite the darker aspects) and enjoyed it regardless. I'll be hunting for some more 8th year Drarry fics!
(I swear I'll read real books again soon, I'm just embracing my fanfic era)
