Lesson Planning with Purpose: Five Approaches to Curriculum Design by Christy McConnell, Bradley Conrad, and P. Bruce Uhrmacher is an invaluable resource for educators seeking to enrich their teaching strategies and curriculum design. As a science teacher with a keen interest in place-based education, I found this book to be particularly enlightening. It comprehensively explores five distinct curriculum design approaches: subject-centered, learner-centered, problem-centered, project-based, and artistic/aesthetic.
The authors expertly guide readers through each approach, offering practical examples and insights that make integrating these strategies into diverse educational contexts easy. The emphasis on creativity and flexibility in lesson planning is especially relevant for teachers looking to connect learning experiences with students' local environments and communities, a core tenet of place-based education.
What sets this book apart is its ability to empower teachers to think critically about their curriculum design choices and to adapt their teaching methods to better meet the needs of their students. The authors provide clear, actionable steps and encourage educators to reflect on their practice, making it a powerful tool for professional growth. This empowerment instills confidence and capability in educators, enabling them to make informed decisions about their teaching methods.
Overall, Lesson Planning with Purpose is a must-read for educators interested in innovative and meaningful curriculum design. It offers a wealth of ideas and inspiration for creating engaging and impactful learning experiences. The book's commitment to enhancing educational practice is evident throughout, inspiring and motivating educators to strive for excellence in their teaching.

This book is excellent and should be used in all curriculum courses, provided to teachers for PD, etc. I'm not exaggerating when I rave because it really is so well-researched and organized. I love that the authors focus on elements of culturally sensitive pedagogy with perceptive teaching and go into lesser represented curricular strategies in k-12 such as aesthetic, ecological, and constructivist.
Organization-wise, it's easy to navigate and I like how they addressed criticisms at the end of each chapter as well as providing examples of lesson plans.
I will say that I would have liked more examples, especially open-ended ones for teachers to consider. I think people new to these idea might shut down and think it's not for them despite all the benefits the authors outline; however, the authors do emphasize that teaching is personal and encourage readers to take elements from any approach and blend/repurpose them.
There is a typo on page 95 with "decisionmaking" though.

Whether you are a new teacher or a veteran teacher, this book helps to reinvigorate your excitement for lesson planning and give you some amazing guidance on how to incorporate new ideas into your lessons. I had Dr. Conrad as my professor in college. He was mine and most of my colleagues favorite because he incorporated these types of lesson structures into his own teaching and it made us excited to go to his classes. I’ve been incorporating CRISPA ever since, but this book gives me more inspiration to other ways to lesson plan!
