European Voyage #2

Death [and Apple Strudel]

Rate this book
When London Rose, 33, is proposed to by her long-time boyfriend, she realizes she is facing a stable, predictable, pre-determined (and passionless) life. She freaks out and runs the other way—accepting instead a job across the Atlantic, as a tour-guide on a high-end European cruise line that travels through a country a day. London is searching for a more romantic, unscripted and exciting life that she feels sure exists out there somewhere.

London is elated: the European river towns are small, historic and charming. She gets to see a new port every night, gets to sample an endless array of new cuisine and meet a stream of interesting people. It is a traveler’s dream, and it is anything but predictable.

In Book 2, DEATH (AND APPLE STRUDEL), the cruise takes them into Vienna and Salzburg, home of Mozart and the birthplace of music, and all seems picture-perfect. Until, that its, their tour guide turns up dead after giving the passengers a tour of Mozart’s theatre. Suspicion falls on them. Who could have killed her? And why?

Laugh-out-loud funny, romantic, endearing, rife with new sights, culture and food, DEATH (AND APPLE STRUDEL) offers a fun and suspenseful trip through the heart of Europe, anchored in an intriguing mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat and guessing until the very last page.

It amazes me that even after 60+ years of reading mysteries (and other books) that I can find a writer, BLAKE PIERCE, with more than 100 books published and I had not read any, nor even heard of, the books or the author. If I read one of Pierce’s books a week, it would take me two years to read all of them. Wow! I do plan read more series. DEATH AND APPLE STRUDEL is the second book in the collection called European Voyage Cozy Mystery. It was as much fun as Book 1, DEATH AND BAKLAVA.

The lead character in the series is London Rose (great name) an American woman who is the Social Director aboard the European river cruise ship, Nachtmusik. It is on its maiden cruise. The ship is named after Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (which I am listening to as I write this).

The trip started in book 1 in Budapest and Gyor, Hungary. It has now traveled to Vienna and Salzburg, Austria. In book 1, London and Sir Reggie, a Yorkshire terrier she acquired, helped the Gyor police solve the murder of a passenger on the ship.

Staff on the ship include Amy Blasingame (Concierge), Spencer Hayes (Captain), Archie Behnke (Engineer), Elsie Sloan (friend and head bartender), Bryce Yeaton (Chef/Medic) and Emil Waldmuller. The last two provide some romantic interest to London, Amy and Elsie. New to the crew is Bob Turner, a retired New York City police detective, who is to become the ship’s security officer.

Passengers include Stanley Tedrow (reclusive cabin neighbor to London), Kirby Oswinkle (obsessive passenger) and Letitia Hartzer (frustrated opera singer). Several characters from book 1 also are involved in this story.

Olaf Moritz (tour guide), Fritz Tanneberger (Police Director of Salzburg), Selma Hahn (Director of the House of Mozart Concert Hall in Salzburg),m Wolfram Poehler (rising star pianist), Gunther Raab (head custodian at the House of Mozart) and Greta Mayr (Olaf’s girlfriend).

There are three mysteries to be solved by London. London’s boss calls her “Nancy Drew”. A series of miniature musicians purchased in Vienna by several passengers and put on public display in the ship’s bar begin to disappear. While in Salzburg, London discovers another dead body (see book 1). Fritz considers London to be the prime suspect in the murder. Bob considers her the prime suspect in the thefts. London’s mother had disappeared from her life 20 years earlier while visiting Vienna. Selma tells London she had befriended her mother and had last seen her only a few months earlier.

In 2016, my wife and I visited Vienna. The author’s description of the city, its sites and its food are perfect. I have not been to Hungary or Salzburg but I imagine Pierce’s descriptions of them are fairly accurate as well. If you are a fan of mysteries, travel and/or good writing, then this book is for you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

GO! BUY! READ!

I'm hooked on this series!

The cruise continues on to Austria with the same group of passengers and crew as book one. This is almost two books in one. There is the mystery when a dead body turns up and then the story of protagonist London Rose. We get a look at the challenges of her job on the cruise ship, the potential romance she is avoiding, learn more about her family—including a mysterious vanishing act—and of course her crime solving. Lovable dog Sir Reggie continues to be a scene-stealer and we get to know other characters better as well. I’ve always wanted to visit Vienna and Salzburg and so I thoroughly enjoyed the descriptions and factoids woven throughout the story. I’m eagerly awaiting the next book.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The author not only provides us with a murder mystery as the main theme, but he also gives us two really good sub-themes along with lots of twists and turns and wonderful descriptions as the tour takes us to Austria. The main character London, with her puppy, Sir Reggie who seems to understand what people say to him gets embroiled in a murder and becomes a suspect since she was the one who found the body. And the victim just happens to be a tour leader. With many suspects, London and Sir Reggie seek to clear her name and investigate even though she was told to stay out of it by the owner of her Cruise ship. When the owner hires Bob a former NYC detective to get to the bottom of whatever goes on, he nicely admonishes London to stay out of any investigations or problems on the boat. In this second book, we get to see more about the passengers and their personalities. We are offered a little possible romance, jealousy, and missing souveniers. Throughout, the author uses wonderful descriptions of the country which enables the reader to have a fantastic visual of the Austrian cities. We also learn a little more about London's background and desire to find her mother. Bob the detective is full of himself as to his so called abilities and there is some humor there as well. I really like this series and I can't wait to see what will happen in the next book when they get to Germany! This is a fun series and the ending is a big surprise, one you won't guess! I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own!

Unfortunately I personally did not find this book intriguing or entertaining and was not hooked on the detail of the story.

I read 68% of the story before I decided not to continue. As this is the second book in the series, the author seemed to write in a way that there was some assumption the reader had read the first book, which I found a little confusing to begin with. I also felt there was a lot of detail about the destinations visited, in a travel journal style of writing, which I wasn't really interested in.

Overall, I think the book would be an interesting read for an audience who like cozy mysteries.

Still a cute cozy like the first in the series. I really like the characters of London Rose, Bryce and even Amy. I love Sir Reggie, even though I see him as a Dachsund in my mind for whatever reason.
But good sweet baby Jesus, the rest of the characters on the boat sound about 200 years old and I just can't relate to them. I wish we would have seen more of Honey in this book because I really liked her in the last one. Basically, the characters actually need to do more for me to be interested...not just do ancient music tours and sit around and play old people Barbies with knick knacks they picked up at a previous stop.

Much like a cruise down the Danube, “Death and Apple Strudel” gently meanders through the build up to the next mystery to be solved by the social director of the river tour ship, the Nachtmusik. London Rose has recently solved the murder of a passenger and taken ownership of the deceased’s small terrier, Sir Reginald Taft, (Reggie) who provides numerous delightful moments to the story. There are introductions to a cantankerous author, a passenger with an impossible demand to maintain his room temperature and a few passengers who all own similar small statues of musicians. A new passenger, Bob Taft, is a former NY City police officer sent by the cruise line owner to handle any future investigations, though his credentials are sorely overstated.

When the ship finally docks in Vienna, Austria, the passengers are treated to a tour of the city. Halfway through the tour, the body of the local tour director is discovered by London Rose and the solving of the mystery begins. The solution to the mystery is very well crafted and provides good suspense.

I received a free copy of this book from BookSirens and am voluntarily providing my honest review. Though the beginning meanders through a recap of the first book in this series and a few minor mysterious events, the plot picks up with the discovery of the murdered tour guide. There Is also good information provided about the area around Vienna.

London Rose and Sir Reggie are an amazing duo!

I am enjoying getting to know the characters in the series. I love how Blake Pierce weaves a tale. I have been following his hard-hitting mystery/thriller series for years. This is the first cozy mystery series I have read by him. It is so good that I ate cheese and crackers for my supper because I didn’t want to be away from reading the book any longer than necessary. Even amidst, or should I say, “In spite of”, the murder and mayhem, this was a fun read. I smiled to myself so many times while reading this story. Even though London Rose is the heroine of the series, in my opinion, Sir Reggie steals the show! Reading this story provided me with the most relaxing and entertaining afternoon and evening of my past few days. What a great read!

If you love a clean, intriguing whodunit, then you will want to grab this book. Just be sure to clear a few hours of your schedule to finish the story; because once you begin reading it, you are not going to want to put it down until you finish reading the last page.

I received a free copy of this book from the author via BookSirens and am voluntarily leaving a review. This gift did not affect my review of the book. This review is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Loved this second installment of the European Voyage Cozy Mystery! All my favorite characters were back and a few new ones sprinkled in to make things even better this go around. The murder was of a tour guide for some of the guests of Nachtmusik and this time London herself is a suspect. Thus ensues another adventure, through the streets of Saltsburg this time, to find out just who really killed the guide. The "security" that was hired to watch over the passengers by the owner is hilariously bad at his job and the frustration he causes London made for some of my favorite passages of the book. I also really liked that this book also gave a good bit of history of the city of Saltsburg and about Mozart. It's been fun to learn more about the musicians whose music is played in the rooms aboard the Nachtmusik. I'm very much looking forward to the next in the series to find out what happened to London's mother and where London will end up next. I will certainly be recommending this book to others as a fun mystery read that will very likely entertain.

I received this temporary complimentary E-book from Blake Pierce via Book Sirens in order to provide a fair and honest review. I will receive no fiscal compensation for this review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.

This book had me with the title! It is a lovely cozy mystery read that makes you miss that at this time travel is a no go. I didn't know when I started reading that it was a series book but you do not need to read the first book to understand there is enough back story to understand everything happening. London Rose is the cruise ship social director of Nachtmusik which is a river tour ship. London is now the owner of a small dog named Sir Reginald Taft after the murder of his owner aboard the ship. Seems trouble keeps following the passengers and crew members as they try to move forward on there voyage. This was such a fun read with twists, dog antics, and murder. The characters in the story are written so well that you just can't help falling into the story write away. Sir Reggie will make you laugh and go aww while reading it. He gives such details that I felt like I was on the ship and then doing the tour with the characters. If you like animals and cozy mysteries this book is a definite read. It is a page turner and had me guessing till the reveal. Grab your comfy blanket a hot beverage and make sure you have a few hours because this story will suck you right in. I will continue to read this series. I received this copy free for an honest review.

I am not sure I have a whole lot to say here. While I enjoyed the first book in the series, #2 here not so much. I was able to get through it but I kept looking for the end. When that happens we all know you’re not invested in the story.
I’m not sure exactly what it was that made this so different. The characters are basically the same and we’re still on a cruise. London Rose is still the Social Director. In this book though, it seems that there is going to be some type of death every time the ship stops and Miss Rose will be the one finding the body.
I know these books usually require some type of suspension of belief but it wasn’t that here. I just did not find the story all that entertaining and I found I didn’t really care about the people who were murdered. I think I was as bored as the passengers just sitting and waiting for the passengers on the cruise ship to be ruled out suspects. Honestly if I had not been reading this in preparation for reviewing book number three, I probably would not have finished it. It’s probably a good thing that I was already committed to book number three before I picked up this one.
I always like to think that maybe it’s just not the right time for the person and that particular book. Maybe that’s the case here.

Book #2 picks up a few days after the events of the first book. So it's the same cruise w/the most of the same characters.
Another one in which we have a cute, amusing pet who becomes as important a character as the protagonist. The mystery element of the story isn't a murder but a theft. And I'm leaning towards the chef over the historian.
It's another case where you think maybe the amateur detective should give up their day job, bite the bullet & become a professional detective.  To be honest, this series is a little silly but it is entertaining on audio & I'm enjoying the travel aspects of it.
The writer does a great job of painting a picture so you want to immediately hop on a river cruise yourself. The second book is better so the writing is developing/improving over each book.

FYI: While the writer does a good job of summing things up from the previous book, this is a series that's better done in order.

I found the second book in the European Voyage Mystery series, Death (and Apple Strudel) to be delightful. At one point in the book it occurred to me that I would like these books even if there were no mysteries in them. I am fond of the main character, London Rose. She’s smart, although sometimes she gets in a hurry and endangers herself. She’s congenial, a good quality for a Social Director. Moreover, she likes dogs. What’s not to like?

This really is a book for cozy mystery lovers and I recommend it to them. They will be in for a treat, even if it’s not Apple Strudel.

This is such a fun series. I love books where I can learn something as well as try to solve a mystery. In this second book of the series it's all about Austria and there are interesting factoids about the architecture, music, and food of the region. It is well written and the mystery well plotted. The characters are well developed with interesting characteristics.

The riverboat cruise is making its way through the Austrian region but when their tour guide is found murdered suspicion falls on the passengers and London, the social director, herself.

Another really pleasant reading in the series. Troubles keep on dragging the voyage and stirring bad feelings among the passengers and crew, there are suspicious thoughts on everyone´s mind. A new passenger/crewmember comes on board, will he help or will he be another one to be looked after and being taken care of? London is again faced with serious problems, crimes, and one very personal discovery. How will she behave? Will she be able to continue with her duties while she pursues an investigation on her own and on such a personal matter? Let´s see what the next story will tell us!

A fun cozy mystery that will keep you entertained for hours. Read the cover, it says it all better than I, no book reports from me!Fun eccentric characters and of you are a dog lover, you will love the little Yorkie, Sir Reggie. As a Shih Zu owner, I can relate to the little dog's expressions. Even though part of a series I believe it can be easily read as a stand alone but it is so much fun I think you'll want to read its predecessor. Enjoy!

I was provided an advanced reader copy of this book but was under no obligation to provide a review. The opinions expressed are my own. Thanks to the author, publisher, and Book Sirens for allowing me to read this book.

I enjoyed this second book in the new cozy mystery series. London Rose is back with Sir Reggie and a continuing cast of ever growing characters, including a new head of security, to solve a murder. This time, all roads point to her and she m=has to work hard to clear her name even though her boss has told her there should be no more sleuthing on her part. Sometimes a girl has to do what she needs to in order to clear her name.

I enjoyed this novel as it was a quick and satisfying read. In true cozy form it was an easier read that Blake Pierce's suspense/thriller category novels (i.e. the Adele Sharp or Riley Page series) which was an enjoyable change of pace.

Death and Apple Strudel is Book 2 in A European Voyage Cozy Mystery. Blake Pierce has written a fun fast paced story. London Rose is the Social Director on the River boat, Nachtmusik. Ms. Pierce writes such outstanding stories that are fast paced and exciting with realistic characters. Death and Apple Strudel has murder and several passengers have their collective dolls stolen. I was very surprised when the mystery was solved. From the first page to the last word, this is a wonderful cozy mystery. I received an arc for my honest review.

I enjoyed
this series of books for the things I learned about the places where the murders took place along the Danube and Rhine River cruise. Being a “cozy mystery” the trope gets tiring by the 6th book, but the mysteries are all different and the places are all described in detail that makes me either remember or or want to visit the place.

I also appreciated the clean aspect of the book. Little to no swearing or sex. The main character takes 3 books to even get to a kiss! A refreshing change.

This was the first book I have read by Blake Pierce. I enjoy finding new authors to read.
I was very impressed with the writing as far as describing the area. I felt like I was in Vienna.
I just could not get in to the mystery and the story enough to want to read any more in this series- A European Voyage Cozy Mystery. I wanted to like the book but it just did not appeal to me.

A charming who-done-it, almost a French farce, with all the misdirection and fumbling investigtors you could ever ask for in such a novel. Even a dead character couldn't competely wipe the smile off my face. I've read a few more traditional mysteries by this author, so I was completely blown away by the humor in this book. Now I have another series I'm going to be following.

Sir Reggie is at it again, this time solving a theft. While he wanders the ship, London is once again leading tourists around a European city. Once again, she is suspected of murder. This time a new member of the crew is supposed to solve not only the theft, but the murder. London was ordered to let him work the issues, but not knowing drives her to investigate.

Fun murder mystery with London Rose aboard a river cruise on the Danube. Great historical descriptions of Vienna and Salzburg as we are pulled into the twists and turns of murder and theft. Funny moments as well as eye opening revelations as she works to solve the mysteries. Looking forward to the next adventure.

London is back. This book takes place right after the first. Same cruise and all. London and her new dog sir Reggie are settling into life after the commotion of the death of sir reggies previous corner when bad luck strikes again. They are dragged into by London's need to find out what went wrong this time. A page turner til the end. Had me guessing til the end on what was happening!

Another Delightful Cozy Mystery by Blake Pierce

I thoroughly enjoyed the murder mystery and the shenanigans of both London and Sir Reggie. The Salzburg setting was colorfully described and the addition of the bumbling Bob as a detective added variety and humor.
