Bull and the Goblin Raid

Rate this book
Baron Theodus of Sursival arrives at the Green Wyvern Inn to tell the story of his life. He will return each night to regale the villagers there with tales of monsters, treasure, foes, and friends. And when his story is done, he’ll leave his subjects, never to return again.

The baron’s friends call him Bull, but not because he’s stubborn. He’s a giant of a man. He’ll answer to Lord Bull if you aren’t sure where you stand with him. Tonight he’ll tell the story of his road to adventure: a goblin raid that leaves Bull, his sister, and his mother as penniless refugees on a perilous journey.

Goblins, disease, winter storms, and ruthless bandits all conspire to defeat the trio. Seventeen-year-old Bull, his stalwart sister, and hard-as-nails mother stand side-by-side against everything a cruel world can send against them. But how much can three people take?

Excellent fantasy adventure in the format of a long novella/very short novel. From the author of the capital-E Epic Orb saga, this is a much smaller scale, much more personal story of how a young man's life gets disrupted, casting him out into a dangerous world where he has to learn some quick lessons if he's to save his family and live long enough to tell the tale in a tavern when he's older. The author has found a great voice with this one, and the story clips along with plenty of action and tense moments, but a lot of heart as well. Highly recommended, can't wait for more!

Matt Heppe has started a new series set in his world of the Eternal Knight. This tale starts out many years after the events of his previous novels. And what a start. Kinda like the first episode of the anime "Goblin Slayer" the Goblins are on the rampage, and our hero Bull, gets his life turned upside down by marauding goblins.
Bull wants to rebuild his family's life and fortune, but events conspire to get in his way. Bandits, the weather, ornery shopkeepers and inlaws...where will it end. Well, you'll have to read it to find out.

My rating for this book is five out of 10. I think the character development was pretty good. This book is about a man, who after a goblin raid, is guard for a dwarfs caravan.
