Just a little Love A snooty vampire must learn about himself in order to woo his rough and tumble human beloved.
Stanton Thundler has been looking forward to the haunted hay maze ever since his coworker’s boyfriend promised everyone tickets. When he gets there, the place doesn’t disappoint. He laughs, screams, and hollers with the rest of his buddies…until he lingers over a display too long, takes a wrong turn, and ends up separated from his friends. Stanton doesn’t mean to bump into the slender hottie and knock him into a puddle of mud.
Francois Toulouse is irritated when he’s ordered to go to a coven near Amarillo and inspect their beef. The only thing he knows about cows is how to cook them so they taste amazing. Then he learns a seer has foreseen that he’ll meet his beloved there. The human Fate chooses for him is not what he expects. Stanton is big, brawny, dirty, and a polar opposite to Francois’s fastidious tidiness and sophistication. Still, Stanton was his beloved…
To Stanton’s surprise, Francois asks him out. While he’s flattered, he declines. What would be the point when even Stanton can see they have nothing in common?
This was a bit of an odd one and sort of a disappointment. Almost the entire story takes place on the on the one night at the farm with the Halloween maze and games. While there Stanton and Francois connect and start to bond. Then there is one more scene, a few days later, when they start to figure things all out. That is all side railed by an event that happens. This leaves the story not touching on two things it specifically brought up. It isn't clear how exactly the two are going to build a life with the move and jobs and whatnot, though that is at least touched on. The bigger annoyance is the mention of how Stanton reacts and learns. He has difficulty with things being said, colloquial expressions and misunderstandings, and Francois says he is going to find out what is there. This is then completely ignored so we never learn what exactly is going on. It leaves the story feeling unfinished and never lets the relationship be completed.
On an odyssey trip through the Stone Ridge World series in order. Almost 200 of them! Individually I usually rate them a 3/5 - there is only so much an author can do in a short story or novella, and because there are several overarching plots and each book has a mini plot that does not always get wrapped up - the individuals are okay as a stand alone. Some of them bomb and come in as 2/5 as they have holes. A few actually managed to hit 4/5. However; as a series binge they become a satisfying smorgasbord of reading.
This was such a cute and imaginative story with excellently portrayed characters, especially Francois and Stanton. Of course, the homophobes kind of take the fun out of the story to me, however, the haunted maze and hay rides sounded like it was lots of fun. The relationship between the two of them was sweet and titillating. This was basically a very enjoyable and entertaining read. =)
Found is mate in a Halloween maze and spent the evening getting to know each other. François soon realized that Stanton did not understand things the way others did. One of Stanton’s homophobic coworkers tried to kill them. They will be moving to Montana
I love the stories where one of the characters is flawed either physically or mentally and looked down on by others yet their fated mate sees their true value and treasures them for who they are.
