According to ICBC, basically why would you even want to have a drivers license? When you can stay home (bad weather), while using medication (ask a friend) or are drunk (contact red nose or Uber). The whole book teaches you road rules while insisting that literally all the other options including but not limited to sleeping, cancelling plans, walking or biking is better than driving. BC is a no loiter area and why drive when you are just a time bomb waiting to go off at any curb or corner, skid at the first site of wetness, or start having accidents because you were emotionally imbalanced before you left the house. That being said, if you could go through it after falling asleep spontaneously and losing the will to live on numerous occasions, you will be equipped with the knowledge to hopefully pass the test. Keeping fingers crossed.
It’s so bad. Like I know I have to read it but god I wish I didn’t. it’s so boring and I know it’s supposed to be informative but it’s just so bad. I lost a good chunk of my will to live reading this book. Ugh I’m so glad it’s over.
ICBC needs to up their writing quality. I almost fell asleep on the “what to do?” scenarios. Cute graphics though, and I like the diverse plot lines. Might recommend.
“Try to avoid a head-on collision.” I don’t think I’m the right audience for this book.
“You are involved in a crash. Draw a sketch, noting conditions such as time, location, and weather” (133). Ah yes, let me whip out the drawing pad and HB pencils from the trunk. Look, a crowd is forming! That’s exposure potential. Time to show off your live/ landscape drawing skills.
“Use humour with your friends. For example, tell them you’re not smart enough to drive and joke around at the same time.” Damn ICBC, I didn’t sign up to get roasted like this. My compliments to the chef.
This book isn’t necessarily a BAD book, it’s just that it’s non-fiction, very repetitive, and boring. But it did teach me some stuff in preparation for my driver’s test, so I guess that’s a bonus.
I will give kudos to the licensing office though for putting this out there, because although most of the stuff in it is common sense, it was translated into like 50 different languages, so it could really help someone that English isn’t their first language.
Read this once for getting my L. Just boring ass textbook and repetitive. But very informational. I read this diligently and passed the test on the first try with a 95% score.
Brain go, "brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrruh" when reading this. Uninviting presentation both on the cover and in the pictures. Bleh, there's so many texts books I've read which are a lot more fun to read than this. I guess it does prepare you to ride as it teaches you to stay attentive and not fall asleep when you really want to.
Taking the BC driver's test is no better, with tricky multiple choice questions that seem insidiously 'not wrong' but aren't the right answer either.
It was a short and informative textbook for describing driving rules in BC. Many driving institutes from other countries could learn a lot just by examining this textbook.
