This book made me so angry!!! First of all the male lead is a big fat LIAR! He went to break things off with his f***k buddy because he had claimed the h. The ow came out dressed in skimpy lingerie and he got so turned on at her beauty and and her sexy body that he actually forgot about h and why he was there in the first place. She then got on his lap grinding on him and he got even more turned on. She kissed him passionately and HE KISSED HER BACK! It’s only when she spoke that he suddenly remembered h and felt guilt. He also had a though that he could screw her one last time as a goodbye as he wasn’t truly claimed to the h yet. He seemed to forget that he did claim her in front of the pack and he and h had already agreed to pair bond! He didn’t sleep with the ow but he did tell her to get dressed as her body was too distracting. (Ow had also touched his d**k which he enjoyed whilst he was contemplating if he should have a goodbye screw.) we then hear as the ow goes to cover up he doesn’t follow her because if she comes back all naked and tempting he doesn’t think he will be able to resist her twice!! We hear in his thoughts how beautiful the ow is and sex is great with her, the prick even defends ow over h even though he knows the ow threatened his mate.
Now the lying bit is when h finds out about ow because she smelt the ow on him he DENIES that anything happened that as soon as he saw h first time she was it for him and he never wanted the ow! He said she tried to seduce him but he stopped it. He never tells her how he allowed other woman to grope him or the fact that they kissed. He never admitted that he was very tempted to sleep with the ow and how turned on he was when she was GRINDING ON HIS LAP! He admits to himself he after that scene with ow HE DID claim h that he had problems with h just hanging out with this other man but what he was doing with that other woman was 10 times worse.
The h off course in the end let’s it all go and even admits that even if he had slept with ow she wouldn’t have left him. She was pathetic but he was a LIAR and a wimp because when it came down to it he knew the ow was vicious and threatened his mate but he just got angry and thought stupid threats against ow but did NOTHING to really show that he would put h above the ow who was an alpha herself and much stronger than the omega h. He was one of the worst male leads I have read in a long time. He was a CHEATER, LIAR and a WIMP!
Oh and let’s not forget how even after he had slept with h and realised he loved her, he was having a conversation with this cop who was asking about the ow and “H” got jealous at the thought of the om being with ow and then felt guilt remembering he has a mate. When om meets the ow later the H feels uncomfortable at the lingering look the other man gave her. There def seemed more fire between the H and the ow whilst he seemed to have a very bland relationship where they were just boring with each other and h was too needy and pathetic. I’ve read a few of JQ’s books and maybe she’s just not my kind of author.

DNF! I am rating this so I wouldn’t mistakenly read it again in future. The sole reason of dnfing was, it wasn’t safe for me. Hero lusting and fantasising about his eff buddy isn’t my version of romance. That scene was barf worthy! Then I read Rejane’s review about them kissing later. That sealed the deal.
I love a good shifter book. This is not that book.
1. First of all, I don't like any of these people. They are all a$$holes. The shifter world the author created is one where the women are treated like third-class citizens. The book starts with one pack trading a female for land. Raff is upset about it but it doesn't stop him from claiming Trist within minutes of seeing her. The female wolves are weaker than the men and need the males for protection. I want me some strong, powerful women! The men are all selfish jerks.
2. The whole mates business is a mess. We have mates who are unfaithful (Raff speculates that his sister's mate is cheating). Other mates fall out of love and move on. Does it actually mean anything to have a mate? I couldn't tell.
3. Borderline cheating. Other reviewers have detailed the scene where Raff goes to visit his F-Buddy to tell her they're over. (This happened at around 44% on my kindle) She is hurt and angry and tries to seduce him. She climbs on his lap and grinds all over him. He kisses her back and takes a minute to think about a goodbye F@#$. He comes to his senses and stops but again, does it mean anything that Trist is his mate if he was that easily tempted? He comes clean to Trist after she scents the OW all over him and his apology was ok. That entire scene was unnecessary.
4. In an environment where women are treated as less by the men, they are treated worse by the other women shifters. Can we have some girl power and a little sister solidarity? The women are all unfriendly and go out of their way to exclude Trist and make her feel unwelcome. The OW who was Raff's F-Buddy for years doesn't protect Trist and tries to get her to run away. And she supposedly runs her own pack that helps women in trouble? Like I said, these people are all a$$holes.
5. The OW drama. I hate when these shifters keep crapping where they eat. At least Raff wasn't a manwhore, he was faithful to his long-time F-Buddy. But they saw each other for years every Friday, so try to tell me that he has no relationship or feelings for that woman, and she for him. Oh yeah, the mate bond obliterated that for Raff and now he can only see Trist (who is a virgin *sigh*). Funny how the mate bond suddenly means something now that it's convenient to the plot. And the H was with the OW as little as days before he met the h. So, yuck. And now they get to see the OW everywhere they go and he will spend time with her at pack events. Forever to infinity. I think the author tried to make her seem like a sympathetic character because Raff did just use her and lose her. But I wasn't buying it. She was as selfish as the rest.
6. Hmmm. I'm running out of steam here. Oh ya! Rusty the stalkerific wolf who was after Trist. When she first meets him she thinks how something's not right with him, but then continues to seek him out again and again changing her mind that he's now harmless. Come on, pick one already. Trist was TSTL.
This book was also way too long. The side story with the serial killer was boring, the Jr.High antics of the characters annoyed me, and I skimmed a lot during the last third of the book.
10 stars, great shifter series. The wolves make the shifters very grouchy, they really are not human. The H mates with the h when she's 'traded' to his pack. She wants to be strong but she has no power, her wolf 'turtles'. There's a wonderful murder mystery running through the series. Loved the savage nature of these wolves, and how the H is overwhelmed by his need to protect her, mate her.
He is a pompous ass who might be the king of double standards. She combines being a virgin/ being naive / being the weakest of the pack BUT OF COURSE she is hot and does not know it. Everybody talks about how weak the h is even with her being in the room and most of the time her reaction is just to cry / go run in the Forrest (Which i assume is supposed to illustrate how weak of a shifter she is)
Honestly : Since they both won the « clichés lottery », they are perfect for each other!
I am also giving brownie points to myself because o finished the book (the writing is good), so 2stars, one for the book one for me 😃!
PS : I really dislike double standards and weak female characters, but if theses are not big deal breakers you will probably like it!!
Wtf did I just read? First off why the need to use the word savage every other page?! The MC’s were a joke, I get that Trist was an omega but come on she could have a little back bone and not let EVERYONE treat her like shit. Always having to agree with what she doesn’t agree just to get out of a situation. I just wanted to slap some sense into her. And don’t even get me started on Raff! He was a cheating lying prick. Who goes to the ex lovers house to break things up and ends up being turned on when he sees what shes wearing and lets her straddle him and proceeds to kiss her. Only after she speaks does he remember and is like oh no I can’t do this I claimed someone else. Then lies to Trist about nothing happening when she catches the other woman’s scent on him. What about how he treats the MC? All he did throughout the book was yell at her for doing this or that and she just took it most of the time. How the heck are you going to fall in love with someone who treats you like that? Just did not seam convincing. The side characters were all a bunch of jerks except Leah and Eve. I did not see any character development at all. No one changed or became better. Trist stayed pathetic just as Raff stayed being an asshole. Suffice to say I won’t be continuing this series.

A paranormal with bits of suspense, mystery and panty melting scenes. The books end on a HEA for Trist and Raff, but ends with a question of "who done it?" Trist was so timid. Her life and stability was upended by not her choice. Raff was deeply opposed to having Trist in his pack, but realized they were mates. Not everyone was in favour of their union. Trist and Raff faced dangerous ordeals to obtain happiness.
Totally ridiculous! I have not seen any "mates" in this story. The man gets completely horny in the presence of his ex-lover, even after having been related with heroine and is still jealous of her ??? And the story just stood for it ??? In a certain scene she seduces him yet he thinks he could not resist if she tried again!Simply repulsive crap!!!Are you kidding ??? I'm sorry, but this author has not convinced me. Should write about unscrupulous bikers that would be more plausible!
This was recommended in a PNR Group and I absolutely loved it. A very different take on shifters and fated mates. Plenty of action, angst and great characters. I’ll definitely be reading more
I liked parts of it, and overall I'd be willing to read more in the series, but this particular one... yeah, just 2 stars, and barely that.
This had some good elements of suspense that I liked. A good mystery (though some parts of it were really obvious) which leads into the next books. So, a bit of a cliffhanger? Not in terms of the relationship, at least, but the mystery still has a lot of questions to answer. And I think that just about ends my list of what I actually liked.
To start on the other end of the spectrum...
I wasn't crazy about the pack dynamics with this one. Some of it was a little bit of a different take - the whole "savage" thing, the more animalistic aspect of it. It was a bit different than the shifter stories I've been reading recently, which made for a nice change. At the same time, it did make the characters a bit more raw and (frankly) bordering on unlikeable. And I did get a bit tired of "savage" as a word, to be honest. It was really how they treated each other that turned me off. The role of the omega was especially awkward. Anytime there's a heirarchy, there will be a weak one, a bottom rung. So, why treat them so horribly? The pack won't function if they're all alphas! Yes, the omega is weaker, but the way Lucien's pack walked all over her... I got really frustrated. I've seen the 'weak omega' idea handled better. Here, everyone was just mean and rude. Like, why was Cherime such a bitch? I seriously couldn't understand that one!
And yet, as basically the male omenga, what on Earth was Rusty doing at that negotiation at the beginning that set things in motion in the first place? Why didn't Lucien send Connell or one of the other males? It was mentioned briefly but never explained, so instead, we have a lower ranking wolf way overstepping his authority, resulting in all sorts of havok.
Loses more stars with the borderline cheating too, on both sides. Trist (h) consciously led on Rusty and lied to Raff (H) about it - even though she was saying that Raff was her mate, that she was giving things time but had chosen him, yadda, yadda, yadda. And on the other side, we have Raff, who (despite being 'a one woman man') went to break up with his f*ck buddy, and ends up forgetting entirely about Trist when his ex comes out in lingerie. He doesn't actually sleep with her, but at the same time, he doesn't remember Trist until he's deep in a lip-lock with Ascena (which he's returning enthusiastically).
I think what I disliked most was Trist. Part of it was going along with the pack dynamics, but part of it was her. Weakest heroine I've read in quite a while. Irritatingly so. I like a good shy heroine, but Trist was completely spineless. And naive too. As Leah put it, she just didn't see anything realistic about anyone. She gets these vague unsettling feelings about Rusty, but doesn't stay away, still tries to manipulate him, lead him on, etc? Doesn't ever avoid him even though he makes her uncomfortable?? She definitely skirts into TSTL territory more than once. Yes, her life was upended, but she was so incredibly weak, just rolled right over, never tried to make the best of it. And her wolf too - so, so weak. And yet, all these guys are going idiotically over their heads for her?? And why did she fall for Raff? He was horrible to her for quite a while! Just "shut up and listen, because I say so" and then she's in love with him? Pheromones and insta-love. Yeah, I know, common in shifter romances, but when I still don't feel any connection after they get together...? Loses some stars there.
Side question, how many trips into town does it take for someone to remember to get Trist a stupid phone?? They mention more than once how much Trist needs a phone, then Raff and Trist both make multiple trips into town and she still doesn't have a phone when she gets kidnapped.
Alternating 3rd person viewpoints, mostly Trist and Raff. BOTH OW and OM drama - bleah. Borderline cheating on the parts of both leads. Most of the cast was pretty unlikeable, but the leads especially never did it for me. Trist was a spineless weakling, Raff was an alpha-hole, and I never felt any connection between the two of them. Still, they got their HEA - no cliffhangers there. The cliffhangers that are present involve the mystery rather than the relationship.
Would I read the next in the series? Actually, yeah. I liked Eva and Aztec. Way more than Trist and Raff, actually. And I'm curious how their story will play out. Eva was so much stronger than Trist, much more spunk and personality, so I'd like to see how she stands up to Aztec, the sullen mountain pack beta. And how will all the events at the end of the book affect her and how she and Aztec interact? So, yeah, I'd read the next one, especially if it's another free Kindle find.
Shifter books are my kryptonite. I am constantly searching for a new shifter book, often when I’m in between novels. Lately I’ve been just rereading my favourite ones, so I was glad to find this series that is new to me. And it’s in beautiful British Columbia where I am from!
Unfortunately this book rubbed me the wrong way. I ignore a lot of issues in paranormal books because they are just a guilty pleasure, but for this one I just couldn’t get past certain aspects.
But first, what did I like about it? I actually liked the strong power dynamics between the weaker and stronger wolves. There were over the top aggressive scenes for sure. I liked the separate world the author created for wolves and, finally, the initial premise of girl gets traded (gasp!) for land and boy wants to mate with her and protect her.
That being said, here is my list of stuff that irked me (Spoilers definitely ahead!!):
• Even though I like strong power dynamics, it was not done well here. I want a mix of men and women who are strong, and in this world the men are the only ones with power. Not the end of the world, but it was very hard to read men shit on the women constantly. Whenever a women had an opinion she was a b*tch. It’s unnecessary.
• Also, I like the “weaker” shifters to rise up somehow, or have some other strengths. The h was an omega (which I usually love), and had healing strengths and a strong nose. I thought they would use that to heal someone or she catch the killer, instead it was forgotten. At one point a different women shifter even dismissed her good traits.
• The stalker or whatever was way too obvious. So that whole side story (main story?) was not that interesting.
• The biggest and most dramatic critique is what’s been said a million times in other reviews - the OW drama. The thing is, some OW drama can be fine to show jealousy scenes if you’re into that. But for this, the H constantly thinks other women are “hot” and wants to have sex with them. He sexualizes every women and I hated it. I don’t want to hear that he likes other women while his weaker mate is being bullied, sexually harassed and verbally abused by others constantly. It made the rest of his interactions with the h cheap, disgusting and a disappointment. In my opinion, even though he didn’t physically technically cheat, he still cheated. That may be harsh, but you just need to read it to understand.
Here are just some examples of the H’s qualities:
• He is jealous of a man having interest in his f-buddy even though he has a mate waiting for him at home…
“Want to take a run at her?” He felt a small flair of jealousy at Jackson’s interest, then guilt when he thought of Trist. “She’s all yours, but I doubt you can handle her.”
• Constantly flirting and sexuality other women, and right after he thought nasty comments about her…
Raft suppressed a grin. Eva didn’t like being left out. “Carry on, hot stuff.”
“Human women [Eva] could be stupid in their bid for equality”
• If I was the h I would also feel insecure since he is constantly wanting other women…
“She wanted to ask if he liked it. If she was as good as Ascena, but she held it inside.”
Honestly, it was hard to read sometimes which was a shame because the writing was good, the world had potential and I usually love dominant men with an omega. It had potential. If the next book doesn’t have the OW aspect then I might read it, since that was my major deal breaker.
Sorry for this long, nit-picky review. Happy reading!
I have been craving a shifter romance and a friend recommended this book. The story is set on the fictional town of Darkness Falls where 4 different wolf packs and humans reside. This book follows the story of Trist, an omega traded for a patch of territory, and Raff, the beta wolf of her new pack.
Aside from the romance storyline, there is also a suspense thread about a killer who murdered a woman who is mated to a wolf from one of the packs. The romance definitely took a back step from the suspense and the book suffered from it. Aside from one scene where Trist and Raff were playing in the woods that ended badly, there’s not enough interaction between the two to cultivate a relationship beyond instincts. It made their “love”, not very believable. It was purely based on great sex amplified by the pair bond. Raff never did anything to make Trist feel welcome in the new pack or safe. There’s nothing to make him her person, her home and her safe place. For Trist, she never had anything that inspired Raff’s respect or admiration. If anything, it felt like he disdained her omega status, her skills and her way of life.
For the suspense, it wasn’t very good either. The villain was obvious from the start. There’s no explanation for his actions other than he is off. No adult reader fears a boogeyman with no motivation or agenda. A suspense story only works if the villain is the person you least expect it to be. In this case, it probably should have been Ascena or the bartender. Also, any story is only as good as the villain or conflict. The more a villain is developed and humanized that you can relate to them, the better the story. Make the reader question their morals and if they would maybe act the same way.
Overall, the idea is good but the story is rough, not very well executed or planned. It had potential so this is a disappointment.

It started really good. Trist an omega- someone weak in every concept of the word. Small in size & strength. Trist was traded to another pack for a piece of land. Issue #1 that I just couldn’t understand. **spoiler Alert** There’s 2 packs the alphas are brothers. Gideion & Lucien. Trist is from Gideion’s pack. At the time of the trade Lucien the alpha was not there so he left Rusty in charge & he made the agreement in regards to the trade... now the issue I have with that is.. Rusty is the male omega which once again was described as weak & small in size. So that makes no sense to me that it would happen. Issue #2. Raff- Lucien’s beta which is completely the opposite of an omega. Beta’s are strong & big in size & 2nd in command to their alphas. In other books I always read that alphas & betas mate w/someone that can handle them, someone as strong as them since they are so strong in every aspect of the word. So how in the world would a beta mate/bond with someone so inferior as an omega?!?? It makes noooo sense to me whatsoever! Issue #3- TRIST- they made her sooooooooooooo weak that it was just annoying on how they described her. What I picture when I read her descriptions a dwarf/little person (I’m sorry I don’t mean to offend anyone) but that’s how I see her & Raff a Giant. There was a point that I just kept skimming through the pages since a lot of it was just repeating scenes. Issue #4 & final problem. Trist- even though they made her weak, small, defenseless... they also made her seem irresistible to male of any kind which was sooooooo weird. Overall it wasn’t a bad story but it wasn’t great either.
I am such a fan of Jasmin Quinn’s Running with the Devil series that I always buy any book that she writes. I’ve never been disappointed and Basic Instinct holds up to my expectations of this writer.
This is the story of Trist and Raff, wolf shifters who live in the area of Darkness Falls in the northern Rocky Mountains in British Columbia. Darkness Falls is the home of four shifter packs and human beings who live in peace with each other. Trist, an omega, isn’t from the same pack as Raff, a beta, but when Trist is traded to Raff’s pack, they hesitantly recognize each other as mates.
But there’s a psychopath on the loose who has already murdered one human woman and appears to be stalking Trist. There is a mystery surrounding this murderer, and he or she cannot seem to be identified, an unusual occurrence with wolf shifters accustomed to identifying others through scent. Who killed the human woman, a shifter’s mate? And who’s stalking Trist? Are they one and the same or are others involved? There’s a mystery brewing here. This is a good story, written well with wonderful characters. Don’t miss out on this new entry by Jasmin Quinn! You won’t be disappointed.
Decent shifter read. I was super happy that it is in 3rd person point of view. I get so tired of first person. The shifter set up was different enough to be interesting. There are a lot of shifter books out there and we all know they can be very similar. Here the shifter clans were not very willing to work together or allow anyone onto their territories. The shifters were not very nice people on the whole. Their behavior was greatly influence by the instincts of their wolves. And the wolves were not the kind loving creatures towards their mates as in usual in these books. The hero was quite the ass. The heroine was TSTL in several instances. The story was interesting enough. There is a one book bad guy and there is an over arcing bad guy who will carry throughout the series I believe.
The writing was decent but lacked a bit of immediacy for me. The characters were not wooden but were not riveting. Still I enjoyed it enough to move on to the next one.
I can't think of a single thing I didn't love about this shifter romance except maybe that it ended but fortunately for me it is a series so I will get to visit again. Raff is an alpha male wolf whose dominance is truly panty melting. Trist is a omega wolf with a sweetness of character you would expect from that dynamic but with some fiery sparks when she is pushed to hard. Their romance isn't all sparkly rainbows so expect some drama but it just made me love their happy ending even more. The storyline kept me intrigued with the suspense of who is the psychopath stalking the people of Darkness Falls? I enjoyed the supporting characters almost as much as the main couple so I am driving myself crazy deciding which characters might be future couples. I love it when a book grabs my attention and doesn't let me go till the end. I am highly anticipating the next couple in this series.
Loved this book. Full of drama, passion, chemistry and hot werewolf and alpha testosterone flying about. Trist has been used in a pac deal as a trade off for some land her pack wants. Joining a new pack will not be easy especially as she will be classed as the omega in the pack. As soon as she arrives she sends testeosterone flying with shifters fighting over her, including the alpha. Trist has formed a connection with the beta Raff tho who picked her up and brought her here and he is claiming his stake. Trist must choose her future mate to keep the peace. She chooses Raff but others are not happy. Trist has to watch her back as other members of her new pack are not as welcoming and jealousy from other male rivals make them unruly. Great start, cannot wait for next book. Full of drama, suspense and werewolf passion.
This is my first time reading this author. Honestly this should’ve been 21/2 stars but I rounded up to be nice. If you have to give an English lesson on a word, chances are you used it to much. The amount was kind of cringe worthy. I don’t mind meek girls in books so I was all good with it. What I did hate was there was no give. She had to give up everything, the author never addressed that. It made for a bad pack leader and bad mate to make her give up her passion. I may read the next one. Although this is one of those books where they pair everyone off in the first book pretty much, so what’s the point of reading their book you know who they end up with.
I did not enjoy the fact that the heroine was a blubbering idiot . I mean a guy tries to rape you and you still keep that from your mate?
Then there is the hero who went to an ex lovers home and took off his shoes, got a beer, propped himself up on her couch. When the chick straddles and kissed him he kissed back and got aroused. He stopped it eventually but I still consider that crossing a line.
The heroine repeatedly made the same mistakes with the villain . Over and over still trying to be his friend . I wanted to smack them both.
This was a spectacular shifter romance story for Raff and Trist filled with all of the intense emotions and insecure jealousy of a new relationship. The addition of a dangerous and mysterious attacker roaming around the area looking for victims, added the element of suspense to this very captivating tale. While the shifter characters were fascinating, the other individuals were bold and gritty. I enjoyed their interactions. They were always explosive. I loved everything about this absorbing narrative and all of the players making up this great story. Outstanding Tale!!!!!
A nail biting story from start to finish. Lots of action, suspense, intrigue and a whole lot of hot shifter sex! Raft and Trist were made for each other. Such amazing characters. Their chemistry is smouldering and intensely hot! With so many panty melting moments!
The story and characters are well written but that is no surprise as this author has amazing writing skills!
Highly recommend. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
This book is a decent shifter romance. It had a lot of twists and turns and good character dynamics. The story had a lot going on and keep you interested and turning those pages.
Quite a few supporting characters and some more annoying then others. Heroine was an interesting character, both mild and full of strength at the same time,
A bit of a love triangle in the story too and of course ends with a happily ever after.
Great read. A strong story with some messed up characters that you gotta like. Raff is all Alpha and I don't understand how he can stand being Beta. Trist is a great person but she's definitely dingy. How can you be around shifters and know so little? She knows less than the humans. But I can understand where she's coming from mentally. She just doesn't go about it smartly.
This was a wonderful beginning for this series. There was a lot going on, but it wasn't confusing. There was the right amount of drama with Trust who seemed like a kid/teenager at times more than a woman in her thinking. But even though Rusty was warped in head, I just knew that it wasn't him. I cant wait to keep reading and see who the pay homage really is.
The characters were intense. There seemed to be a lot going on. I felt that there were to many roosters in the hen house. The brothers are reliant on each other and not good alphas in my opinion. I believe that the trading of women was weird and I think there should have been a mutual place to integrate the packs to find their one. It was just overwhelming and the storyline with Rusty just added to the overload of information going on within the story.
I don't know where to start! It's been a while since I've read a shifter book, I had just gotten away from them. But since it was a Jasmín Quinn book I knew it had to be good which is an understatement! This book has gotten me back into this genre again. I can't wait for the next book in this series!!
Basic Instinct was different from other shifter books that I've read but I liked it. In this book there is not love and caring in the pack, the alpha and beta rule with brute force. Basic Instinct has a great thriller & mystery going on and I'll be reading the next book in this series to see if we get a conclusion or more clues on who our killer is.
Loved the story and amazing characters. Although I think the main female character could have been a little more assertive. She was just running around with a big tattoo on her forehead that says "victim". But, she was very likable and her mate was hunky, if a little overbearing. Lol. I will not give the book four stars because I really enjoyed the story
