Smoke in her Eyes

Two men. One woman. A vicious cycle of love, hate, death, rebirth. Not a Happily Ever After in sight... Six months ago, Helle Madsen would have described herself as normal. Now she no longer knows if that terms applies, not after her entire life has been turned upside down by the reappearance of not one, but two, men from her very, very distant past. Helle Madsen never believed in mumbo-jumbo stuff like reincarnation—until she came face to face with Jason Morris, a man who purportedly had spent fifty lives looking for her. Coping with being reunited with the lover from her ancient past was one thing. Having Sam Woolf, her vindictive nemesis from that same ancient past join the party was a bit too much. Suddenly, Helle finds herself the reluctant heroine of a far-flung, time-transcending epic story, one in which pain and loss seem to play a very big part. This time round, Jason and Helle are determined to make it to the happily ever after. Unfortunately, Sam Woolf will stop at nothing to crush them. That ride into the golden sunset seems awfully far away at times…

Anna was raised abroad, on a pungent mix of Latin American culture, English history and Swedish traditions. As a result she's multilingual and most of her reading is historical- both non-fiction and fiction. Possessed of a lively imagination, she has drawers full of potential stories, all of them set in the past. She was always going to be a writer - or a historian, preferably both. Ideally, Anna aspired to becoming a pioneer time traveller, but science has as yet not advanced to the point of making that possible. Instead she ended up with a degree in Business and Finance, with very little time to spare for her most favourite pursuit. Still, one does as one must, and in between juggling a challenging career Anna raised her four children on a potent combination of invented stories, historical debates and masses of good food and homemade cakes. They seem to thrive…

For years she combined a challenging career with four children and the odd snatched moment of writing. Nowadays Anna spends most of her spare time at her writing desk. The children are half grown, the house is at times eerily silent and she slips away into her imaginary world, with her imaginary characters. Every now and then the one and only man in her life pops his head in to ensure she's still there.

Imagine that someone has been searching for you for their past 50 lives? This is the second book in this steamy series, the book can definitely be read as a standalone, but will be better appreciated if you have read the first book. This is the story of Helle, Jason, and Sam Wolf three people whose lives have previously collided. This is however not a love triangle, one of these men is seeking love and the other is seeking to destroy it. The most frequent complaint I hear from people about romance is they’re too predictable, this story was not! It was unique, Creative, and clever. Reincarnation does play a part in the story, but if that’s not your jam I think the book will still work. The characters were so vividly and boldly drawn. The chemistry between Helle and Jason was off the charts HOT! If you are not someone who likes steam and sizzle with their romance, this is probably not the book for you, The door is pretty wide-open in this one! A well told romance when you’re in the mood for something a little different. Guaranteed to make you smile and swoon!

I discovered Anna Belfrage’s historical fiction several years ago and I became so hooked on her work that I didn’t think twice about jumping into her erotic romances despite the fact that I am not typically drawn to the genre.

Smoke in Her Eyes is the second of Belfrage’s Wanderer series and while I loved the story, I think it best appreciated by those who’ve read book one. I also admit that despite my appreciation for Belfrage’s use of reincarnation as a plot device, it is the emotional aspects of the narrative that captured my imagination.

Helle and Jason may be meant for one another, but their relationship is not immune to jealousy and I felt the circumstances Belfrage created to explore that idea both imaginative and refreshing. The story, unlike many of my experience, does not hinge on a simple miscommunication or blatantly ineffective red herring. What Belfrage offers is something genuinely relatable and I appreciated how that aspect of the story balances the heat of the novel’s erotic content.

Have you ever felt like you have lived a life that you can only vaguely remember bits of? Helle have and does recall some of that life or lives that have come before now. Now, she has the chance to live it again and thins time just maybe make thing turn out a little differently.

Helle was strong woman. She finds herself in a little pickle. She has not one but two men from her past. Both have unfinished business with her. One for good and the other not so much. Will things turn out differently for any of them or some of them? That is a question I will not tell you. Pick up this read. It not a fast ride. Its slow and steady with excellent scenery along the way.

I find myself saying again that the characters were rich, full, well-developed. The circumstance around these three characters was a story all unto itself. Carefully watching it all unfold was just the needed edge to make the story finds it's way deep in my heart. It was so much more going on than just a reincarnation of lives. I highly recommend that you read book one for a closer look at what brought these three back together.

I was looking forward to finishing the Wanderer series so much, but then I was hit with so much disappointment. I couldn’t believe how childish Jason and Helle acted in this novel, and it totally took me out of the story. I felt like I was watching two teenagers in an “on again off again” relationship, and they were supposed to be literal soulmates.

Jason is visiting his aunt Juliet who was hurt by Sam in a car accident and burnt all over her body. He is distraught by seeing his aunt in so much agony for months, and moves with Helle closer to her hospital so that he can spend all day sitting with her. Helle is ok with this at first, but then she starts to get jealous as he spends more time with her and won’t even give her a second glance when he comes home. Helle knows Juliet is in love with Jason, but Jason thinks that Helle is being selfish. He couldn’t think of being intimate with Helle after seeing Juliet’s mangled body in the hospital day after day, but he can’t figure out the words to explain this to Helle.

Honestly, they were both in the wrong a lot for some parts of this book, but Helle was definitely pretty annoying. She barely even tried to understand what Jason was going through after having to see how bad Juliet really was hurt, and simply acted as if he was cheating on her. So, she decides to go hang out with some other guy to get Jason back. Even if Jason’s aunt is weirdly infatuated with him, hanging out with your dying aunt all day is not the same as hanging out with some random guy all day. She wanted to act as if she was so lonely, so bored in this new town, but she never made the effort to go and see Juliet. She didn’t even join any sort of women’s groups to fill the time in her day, she just sits at the house sulking all day and then sulks more when Jason doesn’t come home ready to jump in bed with her. Now, Jason isn’t completely off the hook. At some points in the book Helle really was insecure about their relationship and needed Jason’s reassurance, but he didn’t even try to give it to her. He was just pushing her away all the time, never explaining his feelings, just “knowing” that she would always stay around for him no matter what. Then when she isn’t there waiting for him anymore, he is shocked.

I wouldn’t have been as mad if the drama had ended there, but it seemed like another 50-100 pages of back and forth. Literally most of the book was just filled with the “perfect lovers” arguing over things that could have been eased if not solved by simple communication. Of course, Sam made an appearance every now and then, but they were too busy arguing to really deal with him. I feel like Sam could have easily had someone sweep up Helle while Jason was at the hospital, but nope, everything was drawn out.

The thing that really saved this book for me was I think the end of the novel. I’m not sure which event was the most exciting for me, but I just remember being on the edge of my seat once the random relationship drama was over. The “final battle” was definitely exciting to read, nothing to complain about there!

Overall, I wouldn’t really recommend or warn against this book. I suppose if you LOVE the first book in this series and have to figure out what happens to the characters in the end that you might enjoy this one.

I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.

Book #1 Read. Book #2 Read. Now I'm waiting ever so impatiently for Book #3!

There is nothing better than getting lost in an Anna Belfrage series, and her Wanderer series is fastly becoming one of my faves. The concept is so unique, the characters are easy to like (or easy to hate where Sam is concerned), and the plot moves quickly. Anna's writing has an easy flow to it and her romance scenes are hot and passionate.

As much as I enjoyed the first book, A Torch in His Heart, I think I loved this one even more!

Jason and Helle's relationship is a big aspect of the novel. Jealousy rages high and their new relationship is in danger as an old friend of Jason's threatens to break them apart. They are also on the hunt for Sam, to find proof of his shady business dealings and to bring him to justice for attacking them.

What I love most is the Jason/Helle/Sam love/hate triangle. Sam is hell bent on killing Jason, and Jason wants revenge against Sam so bad he can taste it, and Helle who wants to kill them both at one point.

Gripping and entertaining, I had the best time with Smoke in Her Eyes, and I am counting the days until the final book is released. I can't wait to see what happens to Jason and Helle!

Just finished Smoke in her Eyes, the second book in Anna Belfrage’s The Wanderer Series, and all I can say is I hope book three is waiting in the wings. As the follow-on to A Torch in his Heart, this novel is all Jason and Helle and their sizzling love affair – with the added complexity of a terribly injured reincarnated lover of Jason’s casting a long shadow over their passion. And while there is less time-slip in this novel, the classic steamy love triangle dilemma takes you into a whole new dimension, and one equally as absorbing. The anti-hero Woolf is back too, lurking in the shadows and plotting to take control of Helle; will our lovers be able to withstand his evil and break the spell of centuries? I dare anyone not to read the last third of the book in one sitting, so gripping is the action.
A hugely satisfying read. Ms Belfrage’s fluid writing creates a compelling and immersive world, with characters that become part of yours. If you enjoyed A Torch in his Heart, you’ll love Smoke in her Eyes. A seriously steamy and deliciously addictive erotic thriller from a gifted writer. When’s the next one coming out, please?

Smoke in Her Eyes by Anna Belfrage is a breathtakingly seductive, heartwrenching, and addictive romance fantasy thriller that had me gripping the edge of my seat and holding on to my heart. Every moment I spent with Helle, Jason, and even Sam was so achingly affecting and I loved it.

Anne Belfrage’s writing is incredibly intoxicating, beautiful and so riveting that I found myself dazzled and utterly entertained until the end. Reading this book is like going on an intense emotional rollercoaster and I felt all the wonderful highs and the painful lows. Every single emotion the characters felt, I did too and it’s both heartbreaking and amazing. There’s no denying that Belfrage is a talented and creative storyteller and I think her stories are hauntingly gorgeous, compelling, and atmospheric. I’m absolutely in love with this series and I cannot wait for Book #3 to come out.

Brimming with excruciating emotional turmoil, relationship drama, sexual tension, heartbreak, danger, and some wickedly steamy moments, this book exceeded all my expectations and even surprised me. The plot is absolutely thrilling, deliciously seductive, utterly captivating, and so incredibly entertaining. I definitely felt my heart beating faster never really knowing what would happen next and often breaking into a million pieces not just for Jason and Helle, but also at times for Sam. I know Sam is the antagonist, but there’s a part of me that bleeds for him and is hoping that maybe, just maybe there’s some light left in his soul. These characters have affected me in ways I never expected and I want them to all get their happily ever after. I really love how everything played out in this book and even though some moments were difficult to read, I enjoyed all the different emotions, joy and even the anguish that I felt while reading this unique romance story.

I think the characters in this series are well-written, multifaceted, and surprising. They made me feel so much and I honestly really care about them all in some way. Belfrage created such amazing characters you’ll love, adore, admire, and sometimes even despise, but all of them will leave a lasting impression. I think they’re realistic, relatable, and fascinating individuals.

Sam is complicated and the perfect villain you want to hate, but you can’t… at least not completely. He’s cruel, vicious, and vengeful, He’s obsessive, filled with so much anger, and has felt so much pain from being rejected by Helle. I know I should want him to suffer and not have a happy ending, but he’s also very human. His emotions are very real and I could feel just how badly he hurts that all he knows to do is be angry, ruthless, and hateful. I don’t hate him, but I also don’t like him. My heart is just so torn when it comes to Sam. I really don’t approve of what he’s doing, but I do see a little glimpse of his suffering and I just can’t help but feel for him. I’m still hoping that somehow everyone, including Sam, will have an ending they deserve and maybe…just maybe Sam will change in the next book.

I wasn’t too fond of Jason… at least not for the first half or so of the story. I won’t get into why or what happens, but I really didn’t like him for quite a while. I understood why and I felt bad for what he’s dealing with, but at the same time I just expected more from him. He does eventually win me over again and when I think back and really try to put myself in his situation, I get it. He wants to do right by the people he loves and I do admire that about him. He’s very passionate, honest, and is willing to do whatever it takes to protect Helle and anyone he cares about. He still makes mistakes… he is human afterall.

Helle is such a strong, relatable, and amazing heroine. I feel like I was there with her experiencing everything she’s going through. She’s far from perfect, and just like Jason, I think her reactions are very human. I was definitely on her side and I understood her feelings of rejection and insecurity. It broke my heart to see her fall apart, but also I admire that she knows what she deserves, speaks whatever is on her mind, and isn’t afraid to show her true feelings. Her emotional and personal journey in this book made me feel so much and I cannot wait to see what Belfrage has in store for her in Book #3.

A poignant, gripping, and beautifully written story of love, passion, revenge, obsession, forgiveness, and hope, Smoke in Her Eyes by Anna Belfrage is an exhilarating fantasy romance that will grab you and never let go. It’s enchanting, thrilling, twisted, sexy, romantic, and absolutely exquisite!

Another beautifully written and gripping novel by Anna Belfrage.

The final paragraph of the blurb for Smoke In Her Eyes, the second book in The Wanderer Series by Anna Belfrage, is as follows: This time round, Jason and Helle are determined to make it to the happily ever after. Unfortunately, Sam Woolf will stop at nothing to crush them. That ride into the golden sunset seems awfully far away at times…

‘Awfully far away.’ You can say that again! This is the ultimate eternal “love” triangle. Although, what’s happening in Sam Woolf’s pointy area of the polygon has nothing much to do with love, but more to do with entitlement, possession and revenge. These three characters have been reincarnated repeatedly over millennia. So far, the happily ever after has escaped poor Jason and Helle.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Anna Belfrage writes a good villain. When I say good, I mean the villain is extremely bad, but Ms Belfrage just writes him so, so well.

As with all of Ms Belfrage’s books, this story is riveting, the writing is absolutely gorgeous, and you will be left wanting more.

One of the plot details I like is the fact that both Jason and Sam are aware of all the past lives, while Helle only remembers little snippets. She’s remembering more as time goes by and it’ll be interesting to see how much she recalls as the series continues.

One thing I’m hoping for is that Helle will finally come to terms with the idea that pretty much anything is possible when it comes to paranormal abilities. If she understands that she’s been reincarnated, and now believes Sam is capable of the trick he pulled in this book (I won’t mention it and spoil the story), she should be able to come to grips with whatever Sam Woolf throws at them in book three. I’m sure Mr Woolf has more tricks up his sleeve—dastardly man that he is. Helle’s stubbornness and refusal to believe the strange and extraordinary got her into a lot of hot water in this book.

I’m very much looking forward to book three. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Jason, Helle and Sam. I’m hoping something terribly awful happens to Sam Woolf.

I suggest you read book one (A Torch In His Heart) before reading this book. Helle and Jason’s story is an epic one. Readers should be involved in their journey from the very beginning. The first book has more flashbacks to the long, distant past, containing details that are not only extremely fascinating, but crucial to the understanding of the characters and the enjoyment of the series.

Smoke In Her Eyes is a wonderful, captivating story. I give it 5 stars.

Those who have read A Torch in his Heart, which is the first book in the darkly romantic Wanderer series, will be entirely familiar with the dangerous love triangle which exists around Sam Woolf, Helle Masden and Jason Morris, so I'm not going to repeat what has gone before, however, for those who are new to the series, it would be much better if you started at the beginning and followed this daring story of thwarted love and heated passion.

Smoke in her Eyes continues in the same dramatic way as the first book, with so much unease that my heart was in my mouth and that was from just what was happening over the first chapter! The story continues with further developments in the twisted world which exists between these three complex characters whose shared history spans well over three thousand years.

The author keeps us well entertained with this dark story of love and revenge and, as always, the drama explodes in some truly fascinating encounters. However, it is in the relationship between Jason and Helle where much of the passionate heat of the story lies and in Smoke in her Eyes, they both have to overcome some pretty powerful emotions in order to understand just where their relationship is headed. There's jealousy, misunderstanding and suspicion between them, which makes their volatile partnership all the more exciting, and yet it is their erotic and passionate relationship in the bedroom which fairly sizzles on the pages.

The dangerous relationship which Jason and Helle have with their nemesis, Sam Woolf is where the story really gets into some dangerous territory, and as old jealousies explode so the battle for dominance continues with deadly vengeance. Contemplating the destiny of her characters is what this author does really well and she plots their fate with a deft hand and a fine eye for detail. I especially like the way she plays with the readers emotions so that you both love, and loathe, the characters in equal measure. The suspenseful mystery at the centre of the novel is as taut and tight as ever and there's never a moment when the action relaxes into complacency.

Smoke in Her Eyes is a worthy continuation of the Wanderer series and, after reading the tantalising excerpt at the back of this e-copy, I'm already looking forward to Fire in the Skies which is book number 3.

If you know me you know that historical fiction isn't really my jam. I'll read it but it has to really be special for me to enjoy it. While this isn't really historical fiction, it does flash back from the WAY distant past and then today, so it's kind of like... a modern historical fiction. Does that make sense? Probably not but we're going with it.

In book one we left off on a cliffhanger, Jason & Helle weren't in the best shape but they were together, and Sam was in even worse shape and really pretty pissed off. He's determined to take Helle for his own, like he's done every other time around, but Jason is stopping at nothing to get his chance of happily ever after with Helle. Helle, by the way, isn't a useless damsel in distress, she's coming into her own and she's not going down without a fight. She has an idea of which guy she wants to be with but she wants them both to understand it's 2019 and she's not a possession.

The great thing is that even in book one these characters were developed really well and had a back story, characteristics, and personalities but this book enhances them. Everything feels more and bigger, and I was here for it.

Jason and Helle's relationship is tested by jealously (which we saw a tinge of in book one, but it's definitely a strong theme in this book), but also Helle is really insecure in this book which I felt was.. I'm not sure. I didn't love it, but I could understand why she felt that way. Someone from Jason's past comes back making trouble, people are hurt left and right, we have erotic scenes (which were great), and Sam is absolutely bonkers. He's the villain that you know is the worst but you also want to see how completely over the edge he's going to go and he's really pushing it in this one. Jason.. I didn't really love him in this one and felt like he was pushing Helle away and the whole thing with his aunt felt little odd.

Overall? A solid 4 stars from me. Anna Belfrage is a particularly exceptional writer and she's able to give us realistic historical passages and flawlessly switch to today and it almost feels like two stories in one. We have a lot of build up in the bulk of the book and the sexual tension is great, and the last big thing in the book is PERFECT and sets us up for book 3, which I am anxiously awaiting.

I adored the first in this series so i jumped at the chance to snag the second book! I must admit had I known it was already out I would have pounced A LOT sooner!!

The characters in this are just that bit different. Helle and Jason are far from perfect, and I really enjoy that about them both. Seeing how Jason tries to gradually build up trust, Helle is cautious and at times outright disbelieving, and considering her situation who wouldn’t be! Yet in this instalment, we see the trials continue in a logical and often unexpected way.

Helle has seen first hand just who Mr Woolfe and Jason are, she has seen how they act, and now she must decide what to do with the information. Her whole world has been turned upside down, and two very different yet equally determined men want to have her. One, for a partnership and one to possess. It’s an age old type of romance GENERAL premise, and yet there is so much MORE to this! And I adore every page.

This isn’t a fast story of man meets girl, they argue, they fix and move on. It’s the type of book you sink into, absorbing the rich details and sliding into the Characters lives fluidly. It isn’t overly descriptive, yet you get all the emotions and confusions that fly through their minds in various scenarios. Some follow the theme of fantasy, some are purely relationship based confusions and dilemmas, and some are a mix of the two.

This is actually my favourite kind of romance. It isn’t predictable, it is often flawed and not all is rosey. It’s more honest. Add in the magic and wonder of a fantasy element, and you wind up with a richly detailed story that’s all encompassing. All your sense end up engrossed in the tale, you feel the rush of excitement and gasp at shocks along the way.

If you haven’t read book one, do so before reading this or you won’t understand fully who is who and what is going on. You could manage to read it without difficulty, but you would perhaps have hiccups with understanding the reactions and confusions of characters. But DEFINITELY read this!

Whether you adore romance, fantasy or both, this is an astounding delight to dive into! Whether already a fan, or new to Anna Belfrage, this is NOT a series you want to miss!!

Smoke in Her Eyes is the second in Anna Belfrage's The Wanderer series. Continuing the story from A Torch in His Heart, Jason, and Helle, after lifetimes of living, dying and looking and finding each other are finally able to have a life. Well with an exception, Sam Woolf. Sam is still determined to get his hands on Helle and make her his own. He is not nice about it either, he has his own henchmen and is able to possess and manipulate people's minds. It is a battle of wills between the three of them.

This book has less of the time travel aspect but it is is still there in the fact that Jason and Helle have lived many lives. It is more about the love that they share. This book is pretty steamy and at times violent, well Woolf is involved so that explains that. I loved the book, as I do all of Anna's works. I look forward to reading more about Jason and Helle, is Sam dead? I would like to think he is but then there would be no more story.

Anna writes in such a way that you can't help but get drawn into the story. The sex scenes are done tastefully and the supporting characters are well written. This series is sure to be one to please, I look forward to reading the third novel in the series, Fires in the Skies. Anna is also the author of The Graham saga, a historical time slip series and The Kings Greatest Enemy, all wonderful series. If you love any of these types of stories, definitely give them a try. You will fall in love with this author, I have and highly recommend Smoke in Her Eyes.

I have been reading Ms. Belfrage’s books for many years now. I started with The Graham Saga and have now moved to this Wanderer Series. I enjoyed the first book in this series, A Torch in His Heart and am now pleased to continue with Smoke in Her Eyes. Just know that it is a very sexy book. Even more so than the first of the series.

Smoke picks up pretty much where Torch left off. Helle Madsen has learned that she is not an ordinary woman but rather someone who has been reincarnated through time over and over again along with two men; her love, Jason Morris and the man who wants to own and control her, Sam Wolfe. It all stems from a very ancient time when Helle refused Jason’s offer of marriage. She instead fell in love with Sam.

This has lead to them passing through time, missing each other but now finally reunited. The problem for Helle and Jason is that living happily ever after thing when Sam wants to capture Helle and kill Jason. Will they finally achieve that happiness they want?

These are three very compelling and equally strong characters. It’s also a classic good vs evil story so the reader goes on that ride with the characters. For as one would hope that Good is going to ultimately triumph, Evil has a way of doing a lot of damage before that can happen. The third book comes out in the fall and I expect it will be as page turning and steamy a read as this one is.

This novel is just another example of why I am completely in love with Anna Belfrage's writing. She knows how to grip her readers from the very first lines she writes. Her characters are well developed and the story-line is original and so suspenseful.

Helle Madsen met Jason Morris six months ago and immediately felt drawn to him. They fell in love fast but this isn't the first time they've been in love, and Helle has had the ride of her life. Remembering little snip its from the past over the last six months have made Helle realize her and Jason are soulmates who have been in love for centuries. Coping with this along with the evil Sam Woolf who can't let Helle and Jason be happy is enough to drive her mad. However, her turmoil isn't quite over yet. Juliet a woman from Jason's past won't let him forget how much she loves him and when she is in a brutal accident she does her best to break Helle and Jason's bond.

“Mostly I remember all the quiet moments—you know, when you’re just together but you don’t need to talk, you don’t even need to touch, because you’re so aware of each other that you don’t know where your hand ends and his takes over.”
A love saga that spans centuries, this second installment of The Wanderer books is intense, passionate and beyond riveting. You will surely fall in love with Helle and Jason, just as I did.

Smoke in her Eyes was a steamy romance about love withstanding the test of time. It was my first time reading a book by Anna Belfrage and I already want more.

*This is book #2 in the Wanderer series and can be read as a standalone.*

The story followed a couple in love Helle Madsen and Jason Morris. They are so happy together but one person tries to tear them apart. And that is Sam Woolf. All three were connected in previous lives and so the topic of reincarnation was a highlight of the story.

I thought it was so interesting how the past of each character played a huge role in their present lives. The book started off great keeping me guessing and entertained. By the middle of the story, I couldn't put the book down. I was so captivated by this trio of characters and how unique they were.

Helle is a confident, smart, and knows what she wants. When Jason isn't being the boyfriend/fiancee he needs to be, she calls him out. Jason is caring, strong, and really feels guilty in this book. He wants to please everyone and really puts a damper on his relationship with Helle. And then there is Sam. He just loves to stir the pot and will do anything to break up Helle and Jason.

Overall, this book is romantic, suspenseful, and enchanting. The captivating characters and great plot written by Anna Belfrage makes it an unputdownable read!

“We have to talk about Sam Woolf…”

But not yet. Not when Jason is so critically ill in hospital. Jason is her Wanderer, her heart, her life and he is like this because she had chosen him over Prince of Kolchis three thousand years ago.

Helle had died in his arms. Prince of Kolchis had killed her, and in return, Jason had slain him. But even so, it was the Prince that had ultimately won. Life without Helle was no life at all. For the past three thousand years, Jason had searched for his love. Death to life then back to death again in an endless cycle of reincarnation. So many lives, so many experiences, and so many memories, but never had he been close enough to catch even a glimpse of his beloved. To look into her face, to hear her whisper his name, to draw her into his embrace… The years of sacrifice had been worth it. This time he would not lose her. This time they would have the life that had been cruelly snatched from them all those years ago.

Sam Woolf (Prince of Kolchis) has not forgotten, nor has he forgiven. Helle was meant to be his. She was promised to him. Obsessed beyond reason, he will do whatever it takes to remove Jason from the picture. He has the resources, and the ability to do so, and this time, he will be victorious. This time, the Wanderer will die and Helle… Well, she would soon come around to his way of thinking.

How can you love when you are afraid? Woolf shot him. He shot Jason in the head in front of her, and he has threatened her family. Woolf wanted her to choose, and she had. She had chosen Jason, but Woolf would not accept that. Helle knew that Woolf would never give up until Jason was dead, and she was his. Not this time. Not in this life. Helle would not let Woolf torture and abuse her again. If Jason died... If Woolf succeeded… No, Helle would not even acknowledge that thought. She would be brave. She would face whatever Woolf decided to throw at her. If she did not, then she would lose Jason and that thought was beyond comprehension. She and Jason would be victorious. They would defeat Woolf. They had to…

Mesmerising, evocative and utterly enthralling. Smoke in her Eyes (The Wanderer #2) by Anna Belfrage is an epic love story that spans three millennia.

When a book makes your heart flutter and tears drip heedlessly down your face, you know that you are in the hands of not just an accomplished author, but one that is a master in her craft. Time stood still as I lost myself in this masterpiece of a story. I was dazzled, not only by Belfrage’s incredibly compelling narrative but her ability to wring every type of emotion from her readers. Belfrage takes her readers on what can only be called an emotional rollercoaster. As Helle and Jason’s struggle to preserve their love and indeed their lives, Woolf is waiting in the shadows and systematically tightening the noose around their necks. Fabulous storytelling.

Our two brave and star-crossed lovers fight simply to love each other, marry and perhaps one day have children is heartbreakingly tragic. Instead of enjoying their long-awaited reunion, Jason and Helle are being watched and hunted by the one man in this world who unfortunately does have the power to destroy them both. They can trust no one, for Woolf can possess people, command their souls, and has other skills that one might consider demonic. Such trauma would put a strain on any relationship, and it certainly does Jason and Helle’s.

I don’t want to call it a love triangle as Woolf doesn’t love Helle, he wants to own her, but for the sake of not finding a better description, I will call it that. This triangle becomes something that resembles a square. Helle, Jason and Woolf are not the only ones in this constant cycle of rebirth. Juliet is as well, and she has been in love with Jason for countless centuries. Helle may well be the reason Jason draws breath, but he loves Juliet, and he struggles to balance these two very different women in his life. The dynamics in Helle and Jason’s relationship shifts because of Juliet. Jason feels responsible for Juliet, and he has no choice but to orbit Juliet’s sun for a while. She needs him, and he cannot abandon her. Helle’s response to this, her own sense of desertion by the one man who swore would never leave her side, was utterly heart-rending. Her grief at the thought that their relationship might be over causes her to take some very foolish and rash decisions, and it was almost as if the threat of losing Jason’s love outweighed any danger Woolf might place in her way. It was an interesting journey that Helle goes on in this book and one that was absolutely irresistible.

Desperation has driven Woolf to new heights of madness. His power is immense, and his obsession with Helle drives him deeper into the darkness. Woolf is truly despicable and yet it is his story, his fixation, that really drives the narrative forward. Kudos, Ms Belfrage, for giving us such a desperate and deplorable villain!

Belfrage continues to give her readers a tantalising glimpse into the many lives that Jason experiences and because he, unlike, Helle, remembers everything, he has what I would call an ancient soul. I think when Helle has doubts about Jason’s love, she forgets how much he has suffered because of his passionate devotion. In each life, Jason searched for her. He searched for three thousand years. Even thinking about that makes my heart flutter!

I cannot praise this book enough. Without a doubt, The Wanderer Series by Anna Belfrage is the most exciting and enchanting series that I have read this year. I cannot wait to get my hands on Book #3.

I Highly Recommend.

This was one of the more challenging reads for me lately. I read A Torch in His Heart, the first book and recommend you start there. The stories stayed with me and kept me wanting more. I loved the concept, the recollections of the first, ancient love and the lives after. I liked Jason and Nigel and the moms and family of both Helle and Jason were kindly and wise. Woolf was properly bad and fun to hate. The erotic romance…well, the first few scenes were well written, but mostly I skip sex scenes in the romances I read these days. Nothing personal to the author. If you’re looking for a good, time traveling erotic romance with jealousy galore, a complicated plot and plenty of twists and turns, this trilogy is for you.

I just…didn’t like Helle. She was lovely in the first life but very spoiled and screechy in the present. Selfish and a bit annoying. That may just be me. I still found it an enjoyable read.

If you love historical vibes with extra-steamy scenes, you really should check out these books. If you've read the first one, you know there is reincarnation intertwined in the plot, and it's my favorite, unique part.

This book continues the dramatic continuation with an addictive world including a possible love triangle?? I wasn't a huge fan of one of them and became annoyed every time they showed up (you'll have to read it to find out).

The writing expresses a lot more emotion compared to the first, and I enjoyed every second of it! You'll fall in love (again), be driven insane, and be left with hope for their future.

It's a 4 out of 5 star read from me!

Jason Morris has been searching for his wife for a long time...hundreds of years to be exact. He is a Wanderer, doomed to rebirth and a never ending quest for the love that was stolen from him.

Smoke in Her Eyes is the second in Anna Belfrage’s Wanderer series. A story about characters who have loved, lost, and hated one another for centuries. The plot is delightfully tangled, just like the characters, and at most times very suspenseful. The hero and heroine are very likable (though at times make the poorest of choices), and if you can suspend your disbelief about how the “real world” works you will find yourself caught up in the delicious drama of this world.

I am very excited to read the next book in this series.
