A modern woman, cynical about love, finds herself outside a quaint antique shop when left alone on Valentine's Day. The magic begins when she enters the shop and discovers the plastic red heart pin in the 1940's display that whisks her back to a time of warbonds, ration cards, USO dances, and a nation at war for an unforgettable Valentine's Dance and Kiss.

Seasons in Time is the compilation of the Time and Again Antique Shop novellas. Valentine's Day, Memorial Day, All Hallow's Eve, and New Year's Eve are the holiday settings for the ongoing tale of a fated romance, family antics, and the revitalization of a little antique shop and the rundown east end of town.

It had a lovely nostalgic, sweet, and sassy feel. The time travel aspect was magical rather than sci-fi and the Antique Shop setting was fun and whimsical. Doris, the shop keeper, is a lady of mystery and the reader and Lizzy are aware that she knows more than she's telling as events unfold. She guides Lizzy and Will, Jane and Charles and many others to find their true path in life in a kind, grandmothery way. Her story reveals itself in the background of the stronger story of Lizzy and Will.

Lizzy is the primary character though Will and Doris get their moments of telling the story, too. Lizzy is a vulnerable person who hides a good amount of pain and fear behind the face she shows the world. Her life hasn't been horrific, but there is a quiet pain that comes from a father who neglects his family and a mother who picks favorites followed by a scumbag ex who cheated on her with her twit of a baby sister. This all starts to change when she enters Doris' shop and steps back in time to have her eyes opened to the possibility of love and a confidence to reach for it.

Will is a dashing soldier hero who comes from a prestigious wealthy family, but he is no snob and is a natural caregiver and protector. He takes one look at Lizzy and he feels the connection. He is patient with her fears and her vulnerability and he is more than patient with her obnoxious family. He's a bit wartorn from his tours overseas as an Army Ranger. He has his own vulnerability and it is Lizzy who anchors him. He needs her and it was good to see.

The author did her homework when it came to the 1940's and war backdrop. The slang was fun as were all the little ways that the scene was drawn behind the characters.

All in all, it was heartwarming and sweet with a pinch of spice. Fans of Jane Austen will spot the tribute to Pride & Prejudice in this engaging, uncomplicated time travel romance that I can see being a pleasure for many readers.

Magic and Memories are Intertwined in This Modern-Day Romance!

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

The Time and Again Antique Shop series is a collection of four novellas that tell the continuing story of modern-day Lizzy Bennet, Will Darcy, Doris Long, and their adventures with Doris’s antique shop – Time and Again Antiques. Filled with magic, history, and romance Cat Gardiner once again unites her passions for Jane Austen’s most cherished couple and the inspiring and pivotal 1940’s time period. Each novella takes place around a holiday celebration – Valentine’s Day, Memorial Day, Halloween, and New Years’ Eve – and depicts the developing relationships between our main characters.

In these novellas readers encounter: Lizzy Bennet, an instructor at Fred Astaire Dance Studio who has experienced her share of unlucky and disappointing relationships; Will Darcy, an Army Ranger in between tours who has difficulties vocalizing his emotions; and Doris Long, the ninety-three-year-old owner of Time and Again Antiques, an antique shop in East Meryton that has been in her family since 1887.

Even though Lizzy isn’t very interested in antiques, she finds her way into Time and Again Antiques. By some magical properties of a time portal, Lizzy is transported to 1943, where she is in the body of another Lizzy Bennet…who is at a USO dance where she has just been insulted by GI Private Darcy…and sparks are flying!

*Sigh* I loved this reincarnation of Lizzy and Will together – their meeting in 1943 is everything you’d want it to be: playful, sweet, and – perhaps because of the time period – endearingly candid. I also enjoyed the similarities they shared with their modern-day counterparts, and how both had some insecurities and issues they were working through. It was lovely to see their relationship evolve in these brief snapshots as seasons passed. I always love the unique and enthralling ways Ms. Gardiner brings Darcy and Elizabeth together. And even though these two found their way to each other quickly, and were sometimes sharing the spotlight with battle descriptions and time travel adventures, I loved the moments we got to spend with this beloved couple.

Another aspect of this story I greatly enjoyed was our elderly shopkeeper, Doris Long. Seeing her relationship with Lizzy and Will was so heartwarming, and I loved learning more about her own life and some of her past experiences. She is wise, spirited, and has a big heart. I also greatly enjoyed all the descriptions of her antique shop; with such minute attention to detail it was easy to visualize the shop and its collection of treasures (and all the memories attached to them.)

As with any Cat Gardiner novel, the scene descriptions, vivid details, and aptly selected song choices help the reader feel completely immersed into the story’s setting and action. It wasn’t just Lizzy and Will that found themselves transported to the 1940s! From USO dances, to seeing Casablanca when it first came out, to surviving D-Day on Normandy Beach – Ms. Gardiner takes great pains to give authentic and accurate depictions of the events and experiences her characters lived through.

Seasons in Time is a revealing and romantic time travel adventure – a perfect choice for hopeless romantics, lovers of war-time romances, and readers who firmly believe that “Every man named Will Darcy must always be with his Lizzy Bennet.” I love that Cat Gardiner created another Austen-Inspired story that take place in the 1940s! Please continue to write some more, Ms. Gardiner!!

Note: Due to the occasional use of strong language, I’d recommend this story for readers over the age of 14.

"You're not in Kansas anymore..."(quote from the book)

An incredible collection of novellas that stirs the soul and fills it with hope and love. Each of these tales follow Lizzy Bennet on her journey to finding and loving her Will Darcy all with a little help from the elderly shopkeeper, Doris Long, at the Time and Again antique shop.

"Every heart has a half that it must find." (quote from the book)

These are more than light, fluffy stories. Each have mystical, magical and other worldly qualities to them. They bring to life the beauty of finding your one true love, the heart-pounding realism of the dangers faced in war, and the poignancy of loved ones who have died during the course of our lives. As always, Ms. Gardiner's talent for bringing a scene to life with her descriptive verse and her ability to get right to the heart of a matter, had me completely immersed in the lives of our characters. I laughed, smiled, and cried, as I traveled back and forth in time from the present to the 1940's with Lizzy, Will, Doris and even Charles...what more could I have asked for in a book.

Book 1. Vintage Valentine: With no boyfriend, bored, and a promise to her sister, Jane, Lizzy finds herself on the other side of town visiting the Time and Again antique shop. Little does she know what she will find on the other side of the door. I just loved the vibe of this one.

"...we all were too focused on tomorrow - on our social networks, phone, Instagram and the like and that we never physically look up - or figuratively look back to see the beauty in life." (quote from the book)

Book 2. Vintage Victory: Charles Bingley and Will Darcy visit the Time and Again shop to find Jane a wedding present. Charles needs to grow up and fast, but will the pressure from his family break Jane's heart, again? But Charles is not the only one who needs to learn what it is to love.

"...bravery isn't only required or found on the battlefield..."(quote from the book)

Book 3. Vintage Halloween: Lizzy is helping Doris out at the Time and Again antique shop for Halloween. But all is not what it seems. There is a mystical quality that touches on the spiritual that really moved me in this story.

"A magical night in the cosmos..." (quote from the book)

Book 4. Vintage Beginning: Doris, Lizzy and Will come full circle in this story as Lizzy is pulled through the portal right before Will's eyes! There is a time and season for everything in this poignant but heart-warming story. There is also a delightful little treat at the end too!

"A kiss at midnight..." (quote from the book)

I highly recommend this collection, not just at Valentine's, but any time when your spirit needs a lift, or you want to be back in the lives of your favourite characters. Ms. Gardiner's love of the 1940's shows honour to soldiers now and in the past through these vintage stories.

I won this book in a giveaway with no expectation for a review.

Delightful!
A delightfully pleasant fairytale journey depicting the love stories of three couples through time: Elizabeth and Darcy, Jane and Charles, and Doris and Andrew (Lord). I loved it all, and I can only say that there isn’t a widow out there who wouldn’t enjoy the opportunity for an anniversary like that of Doris and Andy. Cat Gardiner always draws me in from page one of all her books. There isn’t one I wouldn’t recommend. This series was the last book of hers I hadn’t read yet, and I can’t wait for new releases in the future. Highly recommend!

Fun time travel

Modern day Elizabeth meets a very sweet gatekeeper of special time travel centered on the people and community of Meryton to bring Darcy and Elizabeth together in each time. This was a fun exploration into the 1940's and the music that was referred to. Overall it was a quick read and one I would read about.
