Rate this book
There's prayer--and then there's intercessory prayer. What's the difference? How do we know when intercessory prayer is called for? And even if we feel the call to pray boldly for ourselves or others, how do we do it? What do we say? And what response should we expect from God?

With chapters devoted to praying for family, others, provision, health, breakthroughs, salvation of loved ones, church, community, country, and more, you'll quickly find the specific help you need to pray for the needs close to your heart. You'll also learn how to develop your own intercessory prayer battle strategy and to celebrate each victory with thanksgiving.

Shepherd has written a very good book on prayer. There is information in it I have not seen any where else. She writes from her own experience, having seen God answer prayers miraculously yet also having experienced the pain of God not doing that for which she had prayed.

I had no idea there were so many kinds of intercessors. Shepherd has spoken to many called to pray and assessed their different focus. I had no idea there were so many prayer styles. Some might pray from a specific list while others wait to hear the Holy Spirit stir them to prayer. And there are so many reasons to pray and places at which to pray.

Shepherd uses a combination of stories from the Bible, those from her own life and those of others to illustrate her teaching. She has many encouraging stories of answers to prayer. She also has sensitive teaching coming from her own experience when God did not provide the answer she was praying for.

I like the sample prayers she includes. They provide a good example of how particular prayers are made, whether claiming promises, dealing with past hurts, interceding for others, or a number of other types of prayers.

This is a very good book on prayer rising from the author's own experience and the experiences of others. I have read many books on prayer yet found new and important material in this one. I highly recommend it to readers who are looking for teaching and encouragement in prayer.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Who is Linda Evans Shepherd: Known as the Prayer Lady, Linda Evans Shepherd is all about embracing the heart of God and sharing the importance of prayer. She is the author of several books, including, Praying God's Promises, The God You Need to Know, and Called To Pray.

Linda is the president of Right to the Heart Ministries and Media Network as well as the CEO of the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association. She uses these as a platform to minister and mentor women, speakers and authors. Lastly, she is the publisher of Leading Heart Magazine and Arise Daily.

About the book: There's prayer- and then there's intercessory prayer, the kind of prayer you pray when you need to move a mountain for yourself or a loved one. What do you pray at such a time? What secrets do you need to know to pray effectively? And what response should you expect from God?

In this practical and encouraging book, Linda Evans Shepherd explains what intercessory prayer is, how to pray as an intercessor, and how to experience victory. With chapters devoted to praying for family, others, provision, health, breakthroughs, the salvation of loved ones, church, community, country and more you'll quickly find the specific help you need to pray for the needs close to your heart. You'll also learn how to develop your own intercessory prayer battle strategy and to celebrate each victory with thanksgiving.

My Review: I was very excited to receive this book as one of my Revell Reads for the month. Prayer has always been sort of a challenge for me and I'm always looking for ways to strengthen my prayer life. Linda's book does just that; it offers ways to improve our prayer lives and become better intercessors. Reading this book, I felt as if I was getting a one on one lesson about intercessory prayer. I learned how to discover my prayer gifting, how to breakdown strongholds and how to breakthrough in prayer.

What I loved: Linda has several exercises for the readers to complete in each chapter. One of my favorites was how Linda helped me explore possible prayer gifting. There were some that I knew already for myself (encourager) and others that I never really considered, but really stood out to me when I did pray (geographic ambassador). I loved how each exercise allowed me to write in the book and really think through what I just read.

Linda also stops to pray several times throughout the book and ends each chapter with a prayer. She also shares several testimonies of how prayer has impacted her life and the lives of others.

I loved her writing style. It felt like I was sitting down with a friend for coffee, discussing prayer. Her words are very encouraging and simple to understand. You can really tell through her writing that she has a true passion for prayer and teaching others how to pray with that very same passion.

What I did not love: I had to dig deep to find something I didn't like. There are a lot of writing exercises and questions for the reader. I would have liked more writing room on the pages, but then again, that is what a journal is for.

Overall, I absolutely loved this book. This is another great book to add to my toolbox on the topic of prayer.

I have often struggled with my prayer life. However, this book really helps. This is a book on the power of prayer and intercession with God and includes lots of prayers! It talks about why we need to pray and then gives many instructions on how to pray. It includes prayer giftings and different ways to pray. It covers prayers for others, for spiritual breakthroughs, for healing, for our nation, community and pastors, for provision, to win battles, etc.

Each chapter includes lots of explanations and examples of prayers to pray and answers to prayer. They include Scriptures to include in your prayers. If you are looking for a book that will teach you how to pray, this is it! She shows you have you can become a person of prayer and also how to “reverse the works of the enemy, to save lives, to be blessed with provision and to flow into God's best for your life” (Introduction). She talks about being sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit to intercede for others in many different situations.

If you have mountains to move in your own life or in the lives of others or your nation, this book will teach you how to pray to move those mountains. It would be great to keep as a reference when you struggle with what or how to pray in a certain situation. There is probably a prayer for every situation written out in this book. Yes, you can make a difference in the life of your loved ones, a lost world and God's kingdom by praying!

When you pray, do you expect to move a mountain?  Linda Evans Shepherd offers practical advice on intercessory prayer in "When You Need to Move a Mountain". What a difference we can make when we pray and take our burdens to God and expect answers.

If you've ever struggled with prayer, especially with the mountain-sized requests that make you feel helpless, this book will encourage you and guide you into being more confident in prayer. Shepherd's easy style and biblical wisdom help you find hope in prayer and teach important scriptural foundations.

In "When You Need to Move a Mountain", you will learn the secrets of intercessory prayer, how to pray for breakthrough, break strongholds, win battles, pray for provision, healing and for your community, church and pastor.  The sample prayers are a great way to learn how to create your own from scripture.  Shepherd's keys to powerful prayer make this book a resource you will turn to often when you need help interceding for yourself and others.

How many times have you were needed to pray but you didn't know what to say? How many times have you felt like your prayers weren't being heard? Linda Evans Shepherd has written a book to help you with your prayer life and I know that I am going to benefit from it. She has filled twelve chapters with her own personal experiences and with stories from the Bible to illustrate the different times when our prayers "need to move mountains" I especially like that she opens each chapter with a Bible verse and that she also shares an abundance of Bible scripture in the Draw Your Sword section. And who can't use the twelve beautiful sample prayers that are in the Ready Your Prayer Stations?

I have often heard of people referred to as "prayer warriors" but in her introduction Linda Evans Shepherd writes "I am like a prayer investigator". She relates how she has studied God's Word to better understand prayer and that she has seen her prayers answered but not in the same way; some were answered the way she wanted and others the way God planned. If you need to pray about your family, your health, your job, your church or our nation, this book, When You Need to Move Mountain, is the book for you. It is evident that Shepherd is a believer in prayer and that she knows this subject well.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book that I received from Revell. All views expressed are my honest opinion.

If you need a book to convince you of the power of prayer, look no further. When You Need to Move a Mountain by Linda Evans Shepherd will do just that.

Maybe the solution is to practice more prayer so we can experience more results so that we can see that our prayers do move mountains.

I love books where I not only learn more about the subject but learn more about myself. One of the things Ms. Shepherd covers is the type of prayer giftings. As I was reading through the list, I discovered several that I already did but hadn't realized were gifts or that they had a name. I think when we learn more about ourselves and our gifts, we are better able to utilize them.

When it becomes clear to us who Jesus is, when we learn to focus on Him in our storms, we too will be able to walk across our own tempests with peace and in the presence of Jesus.

Ms. Shepherd covers everything from intercessory and breakthrough prayers to prayer for our churches, communities, pastors, and nations. She speaks from years of experience, and her book is well-researched. Written in a conversational tone, Ms. Shepherd not only explains each type of prayer, she inserts examples of prayer while leaving blanks for you to fill in names or situations.

When You Need to Move a Mountain is written for anyone desiring to know and understand more about prayer. It is a comprehensive prayer book without being dull or preachy.

It’s not that we don’t know how to pray. Prayer is a topic we will never be able to exhaust. Life often throws situations at us when we least expect it, bringing along with it another lesson in prayer.

When You Need to Move a Mountain, by Linda Evans Shepherd, is an encouraging book which explains intercessory prayer and how it makes a difference in both our lives and world.

There are eleven chapters, a few of which include praying for breakthrough, breaking strongholds, and winning battles. There are chapters covering praying for our families, for others, for provision, for healing, for our communities, pastor, churches, and nations.

The book is not a “how to” book, rather it is filled with stories of situations and prayers which encourage and will direct one to pray for similar circumstances.

Along with these stories, the author includes prayers and powerful quotes from other authors which were hope-filled and powerful.

If you are facing a mountain which needs moving, this book will encourage and teach you to pray until the mountain is moved. It is also a great resource for those times when you may not be sure just how to pray.

May our eyes be opened to the power of intercessory prayer, so that we stand in the gap with our loved ones, a lost world, and God’s Kingdom.

I don't know how many people ago through what I do in my prayer life. Because by large I feel a lot of the time my prayers are hard to pray, and also ineffective. However, Linda Evans Shepherd does a great job with this book to explain and show how we as followers of Christ can get better at praying. She lets us know there are different prayer types: prayers that are simply that and intercessory prayers, where you stand in the gap on behalf of others.

It is my firm belief that Linda Evans Shepherd has put all she has into this book and it shows as a labor of love from the pen she wrote with. Within the pages of this lovely book she's written the reader will find out that prayer is -

a gifting and essential
a secret weapon
a way to breakthrough
the way to break strongholds
a way to win spiritual battles
and that we can and should pray for our families as well as for others
to seek God for provision
and many others

That list is not the full list of the book's contents, but close. The overriding arch of the book is to help people just like myself in not only understanding prayer, but also how to activate prayer that Jesus called us to do within the pages of the gospel stories. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell for a fair and honest review.

If you are like me, you are always wanting to make your prayer life an important part of your daily life. It's not always easy to pray or to know how to pray but this book is an excellent resource on being a prayer warrior.

I like that the author brings a personal note to this book. She shares about her own prayers and when they were answered and when they weren't answered in the way she thought best. She addresses the fact that God will not always answer our prayers the way we want and how we can deal with this. She also brings many stories from the Bible to show how important prayer is and how Jesus implores us to pray.

The chapters cover different subjects of prayer such as praying for our families, our nation, for healing, for provision and more. I love the sample prayers as it gives you a spring board on which to start your prayers if you're unsure of how to start your prayers.

Over all, I really liked this book and felt like I came away from it with a great understanding of prayer and a deeper desire to pray in all things. I highly recommend this book and give it 5 stars.

When You Need to Move a Mountain is a great devotional. The title suggests (to me) that it’s a great book to read when you are facing a particular trial in your life, but I found the book to be so much more. It really encompasses the prayer life of a Christ follower through all seasons – not just the trials but how to effectively pray and deepen your prayer life always. Each chapter brought encouragement and hope – it was a very hope-filled book. I eagerly looked forward to reading a chapter a day (as per my usual) and felt inspired afterwards. The concepts, while can be taken to very deep levels, were explained and presented in such a way as to encourage all levels of faith – from the new Christian to the seasoned Christian. I was encouraged to find my different prayer gifts (didn’t realize how many I actually had) and it was a book that encouraged me to realize I have a more effective prayer life than I realized.

I received this book complimentary from the publisher but was under no obligation to review it. All opinions are strictly my own. I already know of several people whom I can’t wait to give copies of this book too.

It’s always a delight to receive a book in the mail that you forgot you requested, or perhaps didn’t request but the publisher sends to you anyway. It’s an even greater joy when that book speaks right to your heart in the day and hour that you need it. I’ve been in an extended prayer journey for the past 12 months, and I still have mountains that need to be moved. This excellent book showed me brand-new ways to pray on behalf of someone else, commonly known as intercessory prayer.

The author is an expert on prayer, and generously shares her stories and tips in this powerful book. She helped me discover my prayer giftings, revealed the prayer essentials, described different ways to pray, and even described spiritual strongholds I had not yet considered. She writes prayers with blanks to fill in for your loved one’s name, and she also writes prayers you can pray to God for your own benefit. If you want to expand your knowledge of prayer, especially on a loved one’s behalf, add this Christian book to your reading list today.

Favorite quote:

“God wants us to intercede because our prayers really matter.”

Having a great prayer life is sometimes difficult. What do I say? Does God really hear me? These questions and more are ones that often cross my mind. In this beautiful book on prayer, Shepherd shares her thoughts on intercessory prayer and how to pray powerful prayers. She begins by giving a descriptive of intercessory prayer before moving on to the different kinds of prayer giftings. It's very interesting to read through her list and decide what kind of prayer gifts you may have. She then moves on to talk about different prayers for families, healing, other people, and much more. Each chapter ends with an actual prayer that can be personalized for each reader.

I always welcome a book on prayer. While I fully believe in the power of prayer, I am not always the most efficient. I always enjoy learning how to strengthen my prayer life. I think the author did a good job of sharing her thoughts on prayer without being too strict on detail. At the end of the day, what really matters is that we are praying whatever prayers we feel in our heart in order to have a relationship with our Savior. Thank you so much to the author and Revell for the chance to read and review this book!

This was another book that I was really looking forward to reading. I have to say I was not disappointed with this book at all. The book is broken into several chapters in which the author talks about the different areas in our life where we can use intercessory prayer. However, before she talks about where we can use it, she goes into why it is important for us to practice it as well as why God even wants us to pray in the first place. One of my favorite things that Linda Evans Shepherd includes in this book that I have not seen or read anywhere before is about “prayer giftings”. She even includes an extensive list of them in the book. While I am not sure at the moment which ones apply to me, I love that I have the list to go back to while I mull it over. I also really like that she includes scripture, sample prayers, and a prayer at the end of the chapters. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good reference on praying.

Linda Evans Shepherd’s latest book When you Need to Move a Mountain is a delightful book that plunges you deep into the idea and practice of prayer.

I absolutely loved this book, and I am so excited to use it for the foundation of Sunday school curriculum for the next four weeks with my youth girls. This book helps really take the reader into a deeper level of understanding of why prayer is so powerful, how to pray more effectively and intimately, and ways to structure prayer.

While this is a very personal topic and no one needs a book to really teach them how to pray, this book helps the reader go deeper into their prayer life. Ms. Shepherd has many personal stories throughout the book that demonstrate the power of praying, even though sometimes the answer we get is no.

I highly recommend this book, it is a great tool for helping a new believer grasp a deeper understanding of prayer and for any believer to take their prayer life deeper.

The author shares from her own life experiences about topics she has prayed for herself and others. She shares verses to pray and teaches how to pray an intercessory prayer for problems in your own life and for others. It inspired me to pray more specifically for others and to believe more in the power of prayer. This book is applicable for most people looking to improve their prayer lives. Powerful and inspiring

The prayers at the end of the chapters were so inspiring and helpful. I will definitely be rereading this again and using it to remind myself that to move a mountain I need to be faithful. I chose 5 stars because it was so powerful and not just a one time read. I would recommend this book to anyone in a prayer group. To parents and for pastors.

This was a good book on prayer. It provides the reader with prayers and insight on different concerns, such as family, healing, provision, etc. I did feel as though the book could have been whittled down. I’m not one to add unnecessary words and therefore I like when every word counts. But overall, a good book.

I must mention that I received a paperback issue of WHEN YOU NEED TO MOVE A MOUNTAIN: KEYS TO PRAYING WITH POWER. by Linda Evans Shepherd from a Goodreads/Giveaway program.
I was excited to begin this book because I have been embarrassed by what I believe was my inability to pray correctly. This book not only explains the power of prayer but describes the type of prayers that we can initiate. I learned a lot from this book but I felt it dragged on in many places.
