This delightful flap book explores the magic of snow, from a fresh flurry in the garden to the icy north and south poles. Unfurl a giant snowflake, reveal footprints in the snow, discover what else you can do with snow and follow a simple water cycle to see where snow goes when it melts. Charming illustrations by Marta Alvarez Miguens combine with simple but informative text by Katie Daynes. Sturdy flaps make it perfect for little fingers.
Katie has been writing non-fiction children's books for almost half her life and loves questioning the world from a child's point of view. She's developed some of Usborne's bestselling series, including the See Inside books and the Lift-the-Flap Questions & Answers series.
First sentence: What is snow? It's what flutters down on freezing days.
Is there such a thing as too many flaps? I wouldn't have thought so before picking this one up. I never knew if the flap would reveal text--like an answer to a question--or if it would just be an illustration. Some spreads felt like they had ten or so flaps. Some had text. Some didn't. Some moved the plot forward. Some didn't. The board book format and the lift-the-flap feature seem like they'd be for a younger crowd (toddler, early preschool) the amount of text felt like it might not hold attention spans. This one could work depending on the presentation of the one reading it aloud.
Me and my son, we adore lift-the-flap Very First Questions And Answers board books from Usborne. This encyclopedia-like board book explains single topic (snow) in easily understandable and attractive way. It makes teaching your little ones a lot of fun. Add adorable illustrations and we have a winner!

"What's snow MADE of? Tiny crystals of ice [...] snowflakes can be spiky, feathery, long and thing, and flat-sided. Each one is different." This is a really well-done board book, filled with lift-flaps and great information about the shape and science (and fun!) of snow.
