Peter Ritchie is just an ordinary solicitor, with an ordinary (if slightly shambolic) life, until the day his client, a male prostitute called Bobby Black dies suddenly when a kinky trick goes wrong. Bobby has been brutally murdered, and someone had tried to cover it up. But who, and why? Peter cannot rest until he knows the truth. And so begins a rollercoaster ride for him and his on-off girlfriend Naomi, that will see him pitted against some powerful enemies, and everyone he ever knew or cared for in mortal danger.Set in 1990’s London at the peak of Blair Brittania, Peter is forced to turn detective in order to find Bobby Black’s killer, and he has to break all the rules to do it. Forced to go on the run, a desperate Peter plays a terrifying game of cat and mouse to the bitter and surprising end.

As this book is a "Part One" I don't feel it appropriate to score a rating or write a full review. I will say that I will definitely be reading Part Two (and soon!).

The first part of this two-part series was an okay read and a clever story. Unfortunately, the Kindle version was marred by many typos and a rather poor typographical layout. On the positive side, I thought the main characters were nicely developed resulting in interesting people. Some, such as Bobby and the judge had particularly well drawn-out backstories and were therefore very appealing. On the other hand, the lawyer who headed up the firm, Martin Mather, was portrayed as much weaker than a person in his position should be, hence he became unrealistic. The blackmail plot added just the right level of complexity to the story, although what happened to Naomi was a bit too clearly telegraphed. I probably would have given the book a fourth star if not for the incompetent copy editing and layout. Also, I don't know why a short book like this one could not have been packaged as a single volume rather than two separate parts.

Quite a good story (so far), mainly well written - but, if you are going to mention a certain wine twice in one book declaring it your 'favourite,' please get the spelling right. Equally, I spotted quite a few typos throughout which is always irritating.

Finally & importantly: I don't recall ever reading a crime novel that is so inconveniently and annoyingly 'stopped' half way through, ie if you want to find out what happens, buy the next book.

Agreed, I got volume 1 on the 'daily free deal,' but come on!

A gripping read with unexpected twists.

I like the crisp style of writing. The pacing is good & the characters come to life. They sound like real people. Peter Ritchie is likeable despite his flaws. One cannot help but root for him as he struggles to cope with the odds.

The story is interesting, but poorly written. A good editor would catch spelling errors, run-on sentences, etc.

I am currently reading The Judge Part two and will write a review for the ONE story. Two books but really only ONE story, really infuriating but very good story.

Great book

This is a book that will keep you guessing on where it will end and who is to blame. It takes a while to get started due to all the background. It is worth reading

Intriguing with g poo I'd plot.

Only half a story or maybe less. You have to buy book 2, or are there more you have to buy to get to the end?

I hate books with no ending, but really enjoyed the first part of this story. So far, it is compulsive reading and I am champing at the bit to read the conclusion of the story.

Legal mystery

An intriguing mystery, part 1 sets the scene of a murder and the implications for the various characters within the legal profession.

Requires you to buy the part 2 book to finish the story

It seems.like an ok story, but requiring to buy the part 2 to finish the story is a bit of a trick to reel you in.
