Liked how this Yaoi is somewhat different and deep compared to the stereotypical ones out there. Let's see what volume 2 brings!

ENJO did it again (for me, seeing this is published way before Usagi no Mori!) My internal organs are bleeding and screaming and asking for help—this is just phenomenal. ENJO has the way of bringing the worse in a character and then proceeding to peel every skin until the character is barely naked... and human. That's the thing I liked about sensei's works.

The cover kinda reminds me of Arima Kousei from Your Lie in April. They're both music-inclined characters who are drowned by "trauma" from the past and proceeded to turn their backs on music.

Mostly I'm using sensei in exchange for pronouns if I don't know their genders.

This was devastating and wonderful. I'm in agony now because while this is apparently complete in two volumes, I don't know when the second volume will be coming out in English. Or if it will be? June is...I wouldn't say a less reliable publisher, but they're definitely slower. They seem to hit a lot more release date delays and I wonder if that impacts their ability to license and publish additional volumes. But I'll just hope they get around to volume 2, because depending on how that concludes, this could be a new favorite series.

It's not a happy story but it's told so effectively. Beautiful art, thoughtfully paced storytelling, character development that both grows and unveils itself over time. The main character makes some absolutely terrible decisions, but you fully understand his motivations once you see his backstory - which takes up a solid chunk in the middle of this nicely substantial volume.

Hayakawa is a popular playboy with a casually familiar attitude towards everything and everyone, and a willingness to sleep with anyone. This includes, possibly, the lunch lady (?) and the school nurse. Initially, you could read this any number of ways, and most of the people around him simply don't think that deeply about it. He wants to, so he does.

But the reality is that it's tied so deeply to both specific trauma from a few years earlier, and an intense inferiority complex he's had since he was the weird little kid who made up songs and hummed in class and couldn't make any friends. Ever. Kids can be brutal, and instead of being interested in or fascinated by his creativity and talents with music, they decided early on that he was "creepy" and shunned him. Which only made it worse over time, as he got rejected often enough to start expecting it.

By middle school, he'd only ever successfully made one friend: a piano student of his mother's who'd told him it was okay to be good at the piano and to not worry about other people hating him for winning too many competitions. Because even after entering the music world, with people who should've understood him, Hayakawa was constantly met with jealousy and hate for simply being too good. When he won competitions, their parents berated them for not doing better. And over time, everyone...even Hayakawa's one "friend," iced him out for being unlike them.

Some of it is a little bit true: Hayakawa's mother taught piano, his father is an instructor at some prominent music academy, they're wealthy with a huge house full of music and soundproofed practice rooms, so anyone with a little bit of talent would have so many opportunities to develop their skills. There is definitely a level of privilege that boosts people's success.

But Hayakawa is also a prodigy in his own right; his interest in composing music came from an early age, without instruction, and his passion for it - even after he'd "given it up" and started hiding it from everyone around him - helped him to improve rapidly over the years.

The problem is that he has started to hide it, and to hate the part of himself he can't bring himself to cut out.

In this story, that hidden music becomes sort of a metaphor for, and runs in parallel with, Hayakawa's sexuality. I don't know if he had a crush on his friend; I don't think so, I think he was just a very lonely boy who clung extremely hard to the one person who had seemed to accept him. But when he does start to fall in love with Konno, another guy at school, all those insecurities well up and start drowning him.

At first, he thinks all the frustration and tumultuous feelings simply come from jealousy. Konno is calm and confident, happy with the photography he learned from his professional photographer father, and content with a small group of friends around whom he is always fully himself. That's what makes Hayakawa hate him: Konno is able to display his true personality and passions openly, without worrying about what others think. Hayakawa has spent the majority of his life hiding and doesn't know how to stop.

Konno, though, seems to like Hayakawa for who he actually is, and constantly prods him to stop being so fake around other people. So Hayakawa slowly starts to unpeel some of his protective layers, even apologizing to a girl from his old music club who'd known him before he'd fought with his "friend" and given up music.

The problem is, Hayakawa is still pretty heavily scarred, and messes up in how he approaches Konno. He still doesn't know how to be natural and honest about things. So when he makes his first move on Konno, it's a violent experience where they both end up bruised and Konno assumes it was all some big joke or power play on Hayakawa's side.

Except Hayakawa gradually realizes he's actually fallen in love. And he doesn't know how to tell Konno, or what Konno will do.

The ending of this volume is incredibly painful, and it's because the buildup was so skillfully crafted. Konno is rejecting Hayakawa - or so he thinks - in exactly the same way his not-actually-ever-a-friend had. So he leaves the rooftop and their relationship, whatever it was, before Konno can finish out the rejection: which in Hayakawa's mind ends with "Disgusting."

It looks like there's a time skip in the second volume, which makes me unhappy, because based on their personalities in this volume, and Konno's ability to read Hayakawa's expressions correctly, he should've been able to tell that Hayakawa was lying through his teeth at the end there. I would've thought he would try to talk to him about what happened. But maybe they do need more time and space - especially for Hayakawa to grow into himself more so he doesn't become entirely dependent on a single other person again.

This was just a beautifully told story that currently concludes on a very unhappy note, but I have high hopes for the rest.

Interesting story with a rocky beginning, about two highschool students that become friends by spending time in the roof of the school. This would have had a higher rating if it weren't from one unnecessary scene in the first chapter.

Aufmachung

Okay wow.

I remembered liking this a lot more the first time I read it. I liked Hayakawa's backstory, but Konno felt underdeveloped and too much like a blank slate.

4.5/5

SPOILER

I ADORE this idea of not giving up what u love and endure the hardship and lonelyness until u finally find the person who loves you BECAUSE of your edges.
I feel so seen!

I was honestly shocked when I saw Shuichiro getting head from the school nurse, even though it was short and not too graphic scene, I needed a long time to recover from that. I just can't deal with even hints of that.

The rest of the book was awesome! It's been a while since I last read a so well written character, with deep rooting feelings of lonelyness and regret.
I have a long history of trying to shape my mind and body into ways and forms everybody liked hoping to be deemed worthy of friendship in the eyes of others one day, until I find I couldn't.
One can change only as far as language and habits go, but you cannot change your very essences.
You are stuck with yourself. It feels like a curse, until one day a person shows up and accepts the YOU deep inside of you.

"After that day, Hayakawa never came back to that roof."

Even though I didn't cry when I read that line, it still broke my heart. So, they never kept in touch for the rest of high school? Yeah, I know, maybe it's for the best for both of them.

My friend picked this manga for me because I wanted to read a high school romance and needed something sweet. I thought it was the right choice. But my hopes were dashed by the third chapter! Hayakawa's past really made me sad... oh, it's all because of that jerk Yamashita! Just go away, you bastard!

Despite the inappropriate and indecent thing Hayakawa did to Konno in the second chapter, I still like this. This manga really exceeded my expectations.

Really great first start! I wasn’t sure what type of yaoi this would be, but it definitely surprised me in the best way! The first book provides context and flashbacks to explain the main character in order to show us why the character is the way they are - which was so good to see. I feel connected to the lead, especially because their feelings are such a common thing we all face in society at some point in our lives, as well as the people around him! The book and characters, their experiences are all thought out and you can understand all of their perspectives. I’m really looking forward to future volumes and how our leads grow together!

Art style: beautiful
Storyline: beautiful
the characters: relatable

The story really delves into the depth of talents and emotions and everything in between. The battle of emotional stability is well-described. I can say I'm pretty relatable to Hayakawa, not on the raw talent part, but the fact I have to change things just to fit it and avoid traumas. However, our own actions must not be the reason of other's trauma. I didn't like how he *sa konno but he immediately regretted so that's a good thing. I'm actually excited how the second volume goes

So this was not my normal manga. Did I hate it? Not at all. It was beautiful, but not exactly “slice of life” as it says on the back. I don’t really even know what to call it.

I will say that it felt like two different books mashed into one. There is the “easy with sex”, finding himself, sleeping with teachers and faking his way through life Hayakawa and the lost music virtuoso who only wants to make friends Hayakawa. I feel like their stories should be separate. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Also, there was a DubCon moment that I wasn’t expecting at all. So there’s that.
