The Broken Bonds #4-6

With Ties that Bind Boxset

Rate this book
Detective Ethan Quinn has questions. The Arlington Slasher case is closed, the UNSUB no longer a threat—but Quinn can’t quiet the suspicion he harbors toward his partner and the young, attractive ME. Not only does he loathe his uncertainty, he’s torn between doing his job and protecting his team.

Burying himself in cases no longer works. He’s restless. On edge. And tired of fighting his compulsions. Quinn has always viewed the law in black and white. Only now his world is swirling with a murky gray that threatens to devour him.

When lead medical examiner Avery Johnson careens toward a dangerous path, she pulls the unwitting detective into a dark web of deception and lust, triggered by a spree of recent killings.

Is this new player linked to the Bathory murders, or is it another copycat?

Time almost took Avery from him once before. As the clock ticks, Quinn will stop at nothing to protect her, refusing to let Avery become a victim again. Against his uncompromising logic, Quinn can’t deny his feelings. Avery forces him to acknowledge his darker desires, tempting his control—which weakens with every second he spends with the feisty ME as they hunt down the perpetrator threatening to tear them apart.

So this series is made up of two trilogies, this set being books 4,5,6. While you can read this trio as a standalone regarding the romance, I'd urge you to start with the first set, (With Visions of Red), to familiarise yourself with the ongoing backstory and the characters. Quinn is a detective investigating human trafficking and heaps of grizzly murders attached to them. He appeared as a side character in the first trilogy. Avery is the medical examiner from that trilogy and was severely traumatised at the end. This is their story, as they work to uncover the mastermind behind everything - called the Alpha. The romance scenes are slow burn then steamy, but few and far between, as these books are all about the crime and investigation. They are dark, so be aware there could be triggers for some readers. 4.5 for the set.

I'm so glad these characters (Avery & Quinn) are continuing this series. I'm loving the suspense so far! Can't wait to see what happens next!

Wow, can you imagine if the drug Trisha Wolfe created in this book was real?! It's seriously messed up on how realistic it could be. I'm loving how this story is unfolding. I can't wait till the conclusion.

I really did like this 2nd trilogy, maybe I liked the first 3 more? The narrators were good. I highly recommend this series.

I really enjoyed seeing how the relationship between Quinn and Avery developed. In Sadie‘s story I never would’ve put them together but they fit so well! I loved that Quinn helped her heal, poor Avery went through hell and back.

The plot twist at the end, ugh Trisha always catches me off guard and I love it! Definitely recommend.

I loved this one, I mean I love everything Trisha writes but I flew through this boxset. I absolutely loved Avery, even from the first set of books. I loved seeing her gain confidence throughout. I loved Quinn, he did annoy me a little at times how he was annoyed at Sadie still but was ok with Avery and the parts she had planned. I loved Quinn and Avery together, they seemed to fit each other perfectly.
I loved seeing them all come together to solve the case. I loved seeing a bit more of Sadie & Colton.
Trisha's books always have you thinking and this was no different. Im looking forward to reading the last one in this series.

Loved from beginning to end.

This series is an extremely addictive read. The plot is very well written and flows from book to book without a lot of overlap. The characters are well developed and I found myself connecting with them on a personal level very early on. I have already read the Born, Darkly duet and found it to be very engaging. It too sucked me in and held me captive from beginning to end.
Trisha Wolfe has, without a doubt, earned her spot on the list of my favorite authors! Do yourself a favor and pick up this series, and the Born, Darkly duet. You won’t regret it.

Terrific dark serial killers romance

What an outstanding read! I was captured from the beginning of the story. You must read the with visions of red series first. Avery, who is prominent in the first series is recovering from an ordeal and makes a choice with Sadie that puts her life on a very dangerous trajectory. Ethan Quinn, Sadie's partner, feels guilty he couldn't keep Avery safe. This brings them together, and feelings emerge. But everyone is in danger when women are killed and the gang has to stop the killer before Avery is next. Very Exciting!!!

With Ties that Bind by Trisha Wolfe is thriller romance series that is a spin-off and continuation of With Visions of Red. Together they make up the Broken Bonds series. I highly recommend reading WVOR first if you want the best reading experience.

At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; separated from law and justice he is the worst.
Aristotle

Both of these series made me feel like I stepped right into an episode of Criminal Minds. With Ties that Bind starts off right where WVOR ends, except the focus has shifted to our two new main characters: Dr. Avery Johnson and Detective Ethan Quinn. If you read the previous books, you know these two have much to grapple with in the wake of the events that transpired. Both have had their moral compass shaken up... and now there is a new killer on the loose demanding their attention.

A man obsessed is a dangerous thing. You can’t reason with him. He has no boundaries, no limitations. The whole world could be burning down around him and yet he’d only be conscious of his obsession.

I fell head over heels for both Avery and Quinn. I've read a lot of books by the incredible Trisha Wolfe, and these two characters definitely seem to be the most normal. There is something so wholesome about their connection, even though they are working through very intense issues. Avery is such an incredible character: so strong, resilient and intelligent and I was rooting for her every step of the way. Quinn is an old-school, hardened detective with a rigid moral code. He added so much humour and heart to this story and his devotion to Avery — to support her, protect her and empower her — made me swoon. I need my own Ethan Quinn, stat!

How far will I go down this dark path to protect her?

This series had me gripped! Each book is on the shorter side so it's easy to devour them all in a matter of days... but don't let that fool you into thinking it won't pack a punch. The final book... WOW! Trisha always comes through with strong endings and the final book is insane, clever, calculated, and action-packed. It is the perfect ending to this series as a whole, coming full circle and providing closure for all characters involved.

And the villain.... I think The Alpha is my newest favourite villain! Trisha is a master at holding suspense and twisting my mind into a pretzel; I was suspecting everyone under the sun at one point... and when the final reveal came my jaw dropped. How perfect. How genius!! I can't stop thinking about it.

“Some dark things in this world we can’t unsee. [...] Once it takes root, we only have two choices. Let it consume us, changing us, manipulating us into its likeness, or destroy it.”

While on the surface this is a thrilling story and passionate romance, it's also so much more than that. There is incredible commentary on morality and trauma woven through each book, with careful regard for how women are often perceived in society. There are layers of thoughtful discourse that I feel I could dissect for days on end. But this is the reality of reading a story by Trisha Wolfe.

I read this series by flipping back and forth between my kindle and the audiobook, and I truly loved the audio! The voice actors, Anna Riordan, D.C. Cole and Aaron Landon, are perfect for these characters and they do such a great job bringing them to life. Highly recommend the audio — especially considering all three books are rolled into one purchase.

"Dark and Delicious"

The story of Avery and Quinn. Let me start by saying that this story is formed by books 4-6 in the Broken Bonds series, and while it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading books 1-3 first in order to get the needed background for the characters as well as the storyline.
Because this picks up pretty much where the first story left it.

Avery is a great female lead. She is strong, smart and independent; very much a woman living in 'the man's world' working as a medical examiner for a police department. But she is also kind, very empathetic and emotional. She is recovering from an unspeakable trauma (you need to read books 1-3 Visions of Red in order to fully grasp the horror), a trauma she barely escaped out of, both physically and mentally.

Ethan Quinn is a lead detective and his character starts off like a walking cliché. A typical cop seeing the world in black & white, stubborn, a bit macho, protective, and like a dog with a bone.

Their history as co-workers starts long before these books but it's here that they start seeing each other as more than that. The character development is immense here especially with Quinn re-evaluating his life and the whole perspective of how he sees the world. He does everything he can to help Avery overcome the trauma she's been through, and to protect her on top of it since the new case they are working on sees her as much in danger as the previous one in Visions of Red.

Avery has a long journey ahead to heal herself - from her ordeal as well as from some decisions she made in the wake of it. Decisions controversial enough to challenge her ethics as well as her humanity. She also needs to come to terms with her scars, especially the emotional ones.

Once again, Trisha built a great story, immersive and suspenseful. A lot of the world building happened in the first part so here we can fully focus on the story itself, pursue the leads to catch the bad guys and enjoy the ride with Avery and Quinn.
There's crime, there's thriller and mystery, there's romance. And I wouldn't quite call it a slow-burn - only if you count Visions of Red into the foreplay. The romance itself isn't very dark either, it's just the circumstances that are dark.
For once in Trisha's books we don't really have an anti-hero: we have an actual hero - an actual good guy! What a refreshing change!

But I suppose I have a soft spot for the bad guys, hence giving the set 4/5 stars rather than the full five. I enjoyed the story very much, loved the mystery, the suspense and the criminal plot, just the romance didn't quite hit the spot for me. Don't get me wrong, the spice was great, but there could have been a tad more of it as it felt a little bit like the romance took a second chair to the thriller.

And if I'm being completely honest I went straight from Visions of Red into this and very much continued reading because I was fully invested in the characters already (and I also wanted to know how Sadie & Colton are doing) - but would I have enjoyed it the same if this was a standalone novel on its own? Probably not. It's just not as dark as I usually have it.
And heavens know Trisha spoilt me badly when it comes to the depravities of human mind!
Now.. off to dive into the Derision:-)

Book 1:
Back in the lab Avery is locked in fear as she tries to settle her nerves after what happened there. Eventhough, Detective Ethan Quinn rescued Avery Johnson from the dungeon three days ago her life is still in danger.

Quinn is a by-the-books type of detective. He works off of a black and white belief system following protocol and procedures. He has a responsibility to get these killers off the streets, therefore he’s built a wall between himself and these two female co-workers. Both these women are a temptation he’s struggling with.

Sadie is Ethan’s partner and a victim herself. The last case they worked had Ethan angry with her. She broke protocol going against everything he believed in, so he removed her as his partner.

Avery is a medical examiner. The last time we met Avery she was abducted and tortured by the Arlington Slasher. Getting back in the lab has been challenging for her. She struggles mostly with her sex drive. That seems to have been stolen from her after being tortured. She concocted an aphrodisiac to help arouse her.

Trisha Wolfe has found her niche in writing these serial killer storylines. Each one brings readers closer to dark twisted characters that thirst for sex, pain, and love. These are broken characters trying to persevere the abuse and torture of being a victim. There are many explicit sex scenes to tantalize the most beautiful parts of intimacy.

Book 2:
For the first time Quinn let’s instinct override logic to protect Avery from being in danger and as a reward for his twenty years dedication to the police force his boss removes him from the case. He was instructed to reevaluate his priorities and gain some perspective.

Wolfe transitioned from book 1 into book 2 flawlessly giving readers a smooth view into Quinn’s new lease on life. His outlook on protecting Avery has opened his eyes at the dangers of having killers loose on the streets especially when there’s a mole working from within the department. Wolfe entertains readers with a saucy little auction centering on Avery.

Every step moves Quinn into place altering his perspective. He’s being molded and trained to view procedures differently with the help of Avery and Sadie. What once worked for him in the past is laid to rest while he conforms to new ways of dealing with killers.

Quinn removes one killer for another to take its place. Now he’s faced with the Alpha Killer. This killer is killing women with a symbol tattooed on their leg. Wolfe has readers in the edge of their seat with anticipation for a closed case.

Tracking down killers is a team effort. Sadie profiles the killers. Quinn investigates the scene. Avery determines the cause of death. Carson takes orders from Quinn. Wolfe illustrates each individual’s characters strengths and weaknesses.

Book 3:
Medical examiner Avery is still in danger. That liquid aphrodisiac she created made it into dangerous hands. Her once safe haven of working in the lab is once again a place of fear. l

Quinn wants to protect Avery while she wants to defend him. Together they break protocol in order to save the other. Wolfe gives readers an intoxicating fast pace action thriller. This read like an episode of CSI. This was a high energy thriller from beginning to end.

I never saw that ending coming my way. Wolfe surprised me with the big reveal.

“At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; separated from law and justice he is the worst.”

Straight-laced, black-and-white detective Quinn knows the law. He has a very fair sense of justice. Of the law. Of what’s right and wrong. Murder? Wrong. Or, it was, until the blonde medicine examiner was taken and t0rtured by a sadistic serial k!ller. Now, his slow descent to grey begins!

Trisha Wolfe has a way of writing that cuts deep and lingers. With Ties That Bind tightens its grip from the first chapter and doesn’t let go. It’s haunting, intimate, and unapologetically raw. The darkness in this series isn’t just aesthetic—it’s psychological, layered, and addictive in the most compelling way.

Books 4–6 unravel with sharp precision. The emotional stakes intensify, the secrets grow heavier, and the characters bleed in ways that feel disturbingly real. Wolfe doesn’t flinch, and neither do her readers—we lean in, fully aware we might not come out the same. Loved it!

** Review based on audiobook **

Great story with lots of twists. The narration definitely helped conceal the biggest twist of all. Narrators were new to me and other than the narrator for Quinn’s female voice being slightly grating (good thing there either wasn’t enough female dialogue for him to narrate or the story sucked me in to the point that I stopped noticing) the narration was pretty good.

Another winner from Trisha!! I was very happy to get more Sadie and Colton (swoon) but Quinn and Avery just didn't have quite the same chemistry. It was still a great dark, suspenseful smut book though and she is the QUEEN of that genre!

This is the continuation of With Visions, but from Avery's perspective. I thought it was good, but maybe not as intricately plotted. There were some twists, and the Alpha's identity was clever. All in all a solid series.
