Having just returned from their latest Expedition, Loki Familia's search for the rumored second entrance to the Dungeon has brought them to the port town of Meren. A certain playful goddess is having the time of her life doing as she pleases right up until a foreign ship comes in to dock bringing a storm in its wake!
This does an excellent job of developing the world outside of Orario and the twins Tione and Tiona, whose backstories make a lot of sense, as does Tiona's fascination with Bell. I'm even more opposed to Tione and Finn as a couple now, though, since it didn't convince me that she's in love with him so much as that she imprinted on him.
While I have never really cared much for the twins, it was great to get their back story and reinforce that Tiona is the better of the two. The plot was ok, the character development was really good, and the fights, as usual, were greatly choreographed. Look forward to the next installment in the Loki Familia Chronicle
Note: It didn't seem to fit anywhere else, but Omori seems to use a lot more scatological terms in this book than others. Just be aware.
Loki going to the beach with just the girls? Sounds like a fun time, even if you know they're supposed to be investigating the Violas. Yeah, you can forget that. This book has nearly nothing to do with that plotline. Which honestly isn't bad to take a breather and retrench. But dang that first half...
The first half was a SLOG. Maybe I just had too much going on IRL but I could always find a reason to put it down. Which is sad because I've always rather liked Tione and Tiona and learning about their backstory should have been interesting. Perhaps it was the brutality, perhaps it was just the who nagging in the back of my head that to make a place where that was happening means your birthrate has to be impossibly high or you'd quickly have no one left... or maybe just Kali is such a fetid pile of dingo's kidneys. Whatever the case, the first half just didn't cut the mustard. Now please wake me up so can I do the rest of my review.
It is the second half of this book that saves it. I'd have given it 2-stars if it stayed like the first half.
The second half where the current story picks up and things start coming together wasn't extremely original, but it worked. And it was fun to read. The battles, as Omori always does, were well done. The conclusion works pretty well and while there wasn't a lot of movement on the big storyline -- there was some other growth and we did get to truly see the bond between Tione and Tiona (as much as getting there didn't really work for me).
I know I've said a lot more about the first half... well, it is easier to complain than the praise, and well, I don't like to spoil things so I don't want to tell you what happened, just that it was a heck of a lot more interesting than the first half.
Verdict: If you're liking Sword Oratoria, keep going. This one ends up being worth it, even if I hated the first part. Still one of the better light novel series I've been reading this year.
Liked this one better than the last one, It was its own story without spending most of its time retelling a main storyline story over from a different perspective. Not to say there weren't ties to the main story, but for the most part they brought something new.
This one continues the investigation of the strange new monsters, and while not a lot is learned it does further that plot a little. Mostly this one is about Tiona and Tione, their history, and how they came to be in Loki familia. And the ubiquitous past coming back that they have to defeat to put it all behind them. I think Tiona came out as the most awesome. There were some good scenes, especially with Loki getting right pissed off and we seeing the Loki Familia get to lay the smackdown on some fools.
We also see that yet again the Guild has surprisingly little power, and does little to actually curb the real problems in the city. I don't know if Omori meant for the Guild to be weak, ineffective, rather cowardly, and somewhat corrupt, but that is how they come across, at least to me. If they were just an organization that controlled access to the dungeon, aided adventurers, gave out quests, and handled the magic stone trade; that would be fine. But as for deciding policy in the city, acting as its ruling authority and police force, as well as regulating the Familias, they fail miserably.
The book is not without its issues, some strange choices in translation and completely anachronistic terms that people seem to understand when they really shouldn't. Some poor editing in places as well. Story wise the reason Tione is in love with Finn is a total cliche. Also Tione and Aiz should have won their respective climactic battles instead of men coming it to take over for them. Tione and Fiona's climactic battles were a tad over the top, and dragged on for a bit to. None of these were overwhelmingly bad, more just irritations, but enough to push it to a 4.
This volume focuses on the Amazonian twins of Loki familia. We get to know more about their origins and what kind of people they really are.
Personally, what I love about this volume is that we get to know a lot more about Danmachi's fantasy world. We find out that the Amazons are from Telskyura which is also a nation wide familia with Kali as the Goddess and meet characters from Kali Familia. We also explore the city of Meren, which serves as a port for imports and exports from Orario and how it also serves as a gateway for foreigners to come in pursuit of fame, riches and women.
Omori is really successful with bringing fantasy tropes into light novels particularly into the Sword Oratoria series. I guess that's the benefit of focusing on an already strong set of characters instead of the main series in which the characters aren't strong enough yet to explore more of the world particularly outside Orario (and no, I didn't watch the movie yet unfortunately)
Loses 1 star for being predictable. Other than that, this is the first volume completely dedicated to Loki's Familia. No sign of Bell. I really enjoyed the world building and getting to know more about the twin Amazon sisters. One of the best SO volumes so far :)
This volume had very good world building while also fleshing out two of the main members of Loki Familia. The main mystery might be stalling out a bit, but I'll wait until the next book before I make that claim.
This one is really good. Does some solid world building and develops a couple of characters who have really just been "Oh yeah, they're their as well" for most of the series.
