This is the model I will be using to teach 8th grade reading this coming school year. I'm not excited about it because it takes much of the soul out of teaching (this is my opinion, an opinion that my co-workers do not seem to share).
I have had enough debate and discussion about this mandate to make my head spin. Suffice to say, I'm glad that I won't have to spend the time picking through the internet looking for resources and units, but I'm disappointed that I'm given virtually no freedom in my curriculum. I feel that this mandate takes away much of my autonomy as an educator.
Real question (and I know some might find this insulting, but that's unintentional): Why do we as teachers go to college and learn about pedagogy and creating and implementing meaningful curricula when we are so often expected to mindlessly follow a box curriculum? It seems like I'd be better at puppeting this box curriculum if I didn't know how to develop my own. Maybe some people are just lazy, but I really don't like to be told what I must do.
This is definitely a great reference book if you’re involved in reading workshops. So much to digest in this book. Like the flexibility of being able to pick and choose chapters and will be revisiting them often during this first year of implementation.
This really helped me to understand the ideas and concepts behind the curriculum and what needs to be done in the classroom. I wish I could have read this before the school year.
