In the magical realm of Bankhir, Ian Quicksilver is put to the test to see if he is worthy of the throne. When he is found lacking, Ian discovers that his nemesis Silvius has been masterminding a sinister plot during his banishment. Now Ian must find some way to save his princess, his birthright, and his kingdom all in time to vanquish the evil magician.
Alyson Peterson is the youngest of eight kids, shared one bathroom with six sisters and grew up with no television. She spent the majority of her life climbing rocks, riding horses, chasing cattle, hiking, biking, chucking snowballs at cars and making grass whistles. Alyson received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Utah State University and never put to use four years of art school. Instead, she turned to writing full time. She and her husband have two teenage boys, a neurotic dog and go through a lot of aspirin. Alyson is also an enthusiastic martial artist, specializing in sword form and hand-to-hand combat.
Alyson's sense of humor and fun shine through the pages of the third chapter in the Ian Quicksilver saga. We pick up right where we left our favorite band of exiles and are treated to new characters, who are unexpectedly endearing. The story sweeps you along right to the jaw dropping ending.
Full discretion, I picked this book up thinking that it was the first book in the Ian Quicksilver series by author Alyson Peterson; imagine my dismay when I learned it was not the first, but the third! My heart sank as I read the first chapter. Who is this person? Wait...what planet are they on? Questions began to swim, but as I quested through, not only were my questions answered, my misgivings were swept aside after getting about half-way through the tale. Although I thought the book was cute and had some fun humor, it wasn't until page 150 when I realized I was enjoying the story. Suddenly, the main character, Ian, wasn't quite as annoying with his frequent teen talk, he "like totally," grew on me. By all accounts, this book could be stand-alone, but I would highly recommend reading the first two books in the series so it won't take you as long as it did me, to fall head-over-heels for this epic galaxy adventure.
Narrated by teen protagonist Ian Quicksilver, prince and heir to pretty much the universe, new readers are cannonballed into a colossal battle, an amusing romance, and phenomenal mystical powers.
Although this takes place in a war-driven society with warriors that battle lust at the prospect of bloodshed, the violence, for the most part, comes across as mild, and in fact comical. The hair-brained schemes and hazardous adventures kindled memories of Rick Riordan's, Percy Jackson series. And, since this is about a powerful guy from an alien race exiled to earth, who wouldn't think of Thor, God of Thunder? Basically, this is an excellent mash-up of two awesome fictional characters and their dilemmas, but don't worry, the author still makes it unique and wholly her own.
Be sure to check out the first two books in the series so you can connect and feel engaged with these beefy characters from the get-go.
