Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side: Sword Oratoria Light Novels, Vol. 4

Rate this book
After the tumultuous events in the Dungeon, Aiz has finally reached the vaulted Level 6! But in spite of this amazing news, the Sword Princess seems to be completely depressed. There are two reasons.
The first is that she finally managed to meet the white-haired boy again, but once more, he ran away from her with everything he had. The second is that the monster tamer she fought so hard against knew her name--a name that absolutely no one else should know, and yet...
Meanwhile, from the depths of the Dungeon comes a mysterious crystal ball that's about to plunge both underground and surface worlds quietly into chaos!

Adventurer's Adventure

Thought this book was going to be bogged down by retreading too much material from the main series, but in the end it told yet another fantastic adventure.

So, I'm really loving this light novel series, it's one of my favourites, but I have to say....Lefiya may be the one character I'm not sure I like in this series! She strikes me as really childish and I kind of rolled my eyes at her a lot in this book! Aiz starts to train her up in this book after she sees Aiz and Bell so I'm hoping her character will improve!

I'm not going to lie, I feel like Dionysus is up to something but I'm not entirely sure what, but we see some more of him this volume and I'm hoping for more again! Filvis is back too, and helps out Lefiya, and I'm hoping we'll get to see more of her. I want to like her but I can't help but side eye her a bit. We also get some Hermes who's a bit shady, and Tsubaki who was quite fun!

The first half or so of this volume involves lots of training for Bell. Like....Eye of the Tiger playing in the background style training. As you can imagine....Hestia was thrilled. There's a mysterious group that pop up in this volume, threatening Aiz and they're working for Freya. Creepy, creepy Freya. Basically no-one's pleased Aiz is training Bell except for Bell! While Aiz is training Bell, the Loki Familia are gearing up for their expedition and I had such a foreboding vibe the entire time, without Ouranos keeping an eye on them because of it, and some creepy little cut scenes to some shady figures. Although Ouranos and the events on floor 59 to finally allow us to see what's causing the hybrid monsters! One piece of the puzzle falls in to place as this first act, as it where, finishes and we gear up for the next!

Don't hold me to this, because I have a brain like a sieve and it's been a while, but I'm fairly sure this volume crosses over with the main series manga a little bit! Anywaaaaaay the second half or so of this volume focuses on the Loki Familia's expedition to Floor 59 and that's when the pace really picks up. We meet some dragons and wyverns which are always fun, and we finally see what it is that Levis wanted Aiz to see, and what she was alluding to in the earlier volumes! Spoiler alert: It's not good and doesn't bode well.

This volume hits us with some more background on the world, which I'm always eager to learn! We get some more history and mythology to it, which is really fascinating and I'm intrigued to see how it's going to factor in to the upcoming plot arc. The steady pace gives way to a lot more action and fighting for the second half and I have to say...I was on the edge of my seat more than once. I genuinely thought we'd just lost two characters!

This volume went from being all "hahahhaaa" to "WAAAAAAAAAAAHH" so fast I practically got whiplash. Things get tense and the stakes are raised as we finally get some answers and see what we're up against as well as getting some more world building and background. Bell levels up and is starting to come in to his own as are a couple of other characters. We end the volume with quite the threat to Orario which promises to make the coming volumes fairly deadly and give them a good dose of tension and dread, I think!

Fujino Omori has let me down :( The one thing I always liked about the Danmachi books was originality. There is always some crazy mechanic or new power used in some crazy way, or some character's back story coming back to haunt him that makes these books a real gem as far as fantasy fiction goes.

The book could be split into 2 LNs, 150 pages each. The first one is Bell's training. There is some Bell, but there is also a lot of Lefiya and the other members of the Loki Family preparing for the next expedition. That's absolutely fine, as this is the spin off series. Absolutely enjoyed it!

The second part is the dungeon dive for the 59th level where all things will be explained... and we get a rehash of the same monsters, the same type of boss and the great revelation at the end of the book is ... crap... completely predictable by this point.

So, although the Loki family fighting scenes are great Danmachi goodness, and the stuff happening on the 52nd floor is was really imaginative, it just falls short because of monster repetition and some laziness overall (or some effort on not trying to move the plot forward). I do wonder if the author is actually trying to converge the spin off and the main series.

Book 3 got 5 stars, book 4 gets 4.5 rounded down. It was good, don't get me wrong. There are some amazing moments and we learn a lot more about several of the characters. However, there was something about it that wasn't quite as compelling for me. I could put this one down (and did) for a day or two. Again, it wasn't bad, but I just wasn't so set on finding out what happened that I forewent other things. (Mind you my wife and I were watching "Good Omens" while I was reading vol. 3 and I still managed not to put it down). So who knows what evil lurks in the heart of the dungeon? What lies beyond level 59? I plan on sticking around and finding out.

Verdict: Maybe not as compelling as vol. 3 but still worth the read. Sword Oratoria is actually one of the better series I've been reading this year. If you like the original Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon then you're do well to read these.

Best volume of the spin off so far and the end of the 1st arc in this series. We see Bell's iconic moment of him defeating the Minotaur but from the Loki familia's perspective and how it influenced each of their members.

And we follow Loki Familia expedition into the uncharted 59th floor and the expedition is a joy to read. The 3 leaders of Loki Familia are properly flushed, particularly Finn Demine (the prum leader) who became my favourite character in this spin off and now I wish they let us see more of him in the main story.

a solid addition to the DanMachi world. while the first half added some good character development, it wasn't until the second half when's the action really began and the story ramped up. solid battles throughout (where the anime drops some sequences to mere seconds), but after this finale, I'm interested in how this and the main series' story lines will coalesce

Action packed!

The author keeps growing and excelling himself in each book. So far this book is one of the best of the series. The characters have grown and mature, the story and plot has developed and keeps me reading page after page. Great book, highly recommended.

Idk if I liked this volume as much as some of the previous gaiden books but I still liked it. I liked the epilogue and what adventures possibly await them in the future

I goshdarn love Sword Oratoria. It gripped me from beginning to end. First half made me laugh so hard and the second half, boy, action-packed full of epic moments. Seeing them brought low and then succeed in a show of power and proof of their hardships and training, just amazing.
Could I do without the bit in the middle about the main dude: yes. But by the start of the final fight I'd forgotten he'd even appeared in the book, I was that invested. So 5 stars, heck yeah.
Ah, and bonus note: Lefiya really is such a wlw, I love her for it.
