This is an interesting book that can be used to improve the quality of life and promote a calmer, more peaceful environment. Kruse talks a bit about the types of arguments. Some are necessary like those in a court of law or in politics to present the positions on different sides of an issue. He points out the most arguments fall into the category of bickering, those that are based on unimportant issues that focus on the negative.
Kruse discusses the reasons that many people get into arguments that don’t even involve them and place themselves in a position of power. One must know when to pull back and resist the temptation. His tips include focusing on the positive, writing things out on paper, negotiate for a compromise solution, changing the subject, keeping silent or going off to be alone. The author also encourages readers not to attack the person directly or blame, appeal to authority or resort to agreeing with the common opinion. Rather than being concerned with coming out on top, taking the high road rather than maintaining a path of resistance that will lead to more conflict.
This short book is not didactic but presents common-sense philosophy and practical advice on how to keep things on an even keel and avoid arguments most of the time. Recommended for readers ages twelve and older.
Pretty uninspired self-help book, but a quick read with a few useful tips. Granted, I'm not exactly the target audience for this book; it seems to focus more on relationship bickering, and people who don't know they are complicit in their constant arguments with their partners. I bought this on a whim to try and gain some new tactics on how to not engage in pointless bickering with my grade-school aged son. Some of the tips are transferable to be sure, so it was not a waste of time (about an hour to read it), but it also was largely irrelevant for my very specific needs.
Now, beyond that it is simplistic but easy to read and probably will provide some solid insight and tips for some people. But it does not have a lot of clout behind it and reeks of pop-psychology. Not useless, probably not a bad place to start for some people who just need to stop arguing about everything, but definitely not a resource I would actually trust either.
I choose this rating because this book has a lot of good information. It makes you take a step back and look at yourself, then shows you how to change how you talk to people. Thank you
This was excellent. So many great observations and insights. I've gotten my girlfriend to read it. We still argue sometimes, but we at least know better than to blame each other now when it happens. We know that we're making our own dumb choice when we continue to argue, which honestly is a big step for us.
Great book, definitely helps and taking notes also! I can really use the tools he described in the book to help me get in touch with myself and establish while maintaining peace.
