With Ties That Bind: Broken Bonds Book Two

A new threat has descended upon Arlington, and lead medial examiner Avery Johnson is in its sights, being targeted by the city’s latest serial killing menace known to the public as the Alpha Killer.

Whether urban legend or reality, the Alpha feeds into the media craze, orchestrating a killing spree to stamp out all rivals. And when Avery’s tangled web of deception pulls her further into to Alpha’s sadistic game, there’s only one thing she fears more: losing Quinn. With just as many secrets to guard as the elusive crime lord, Avery’s time is running out to reveal the truth to Quinn, the stubborn, by-the-book detective bent on protecting her at all costs.

As a lead takes the ACPD task force deep into the bowels of a corrupt law firm, the discovery of a vast criminal network with far-reaching connections threatens to unmask many players. How deep does the corruption go? How far does the Alpha’s reach extend? While the team races to catch a killer, Detective Quinn is faced with an impossible choice. Will he betray the woman he’s fallen for, or seek his own vengeance outside of the law?

One of my top reads of 2016!

Do you know what I love? No? I’ll tell you. I love when a character grows from one book to the next. I love when that character sees things with new eyes and a fresh perspective. I love the thought patterns, the realizations, the transformations, and the discovery of self. That kind of emotional journey is thrilling to read. It moves me, challenges me, and pulls me so deeply into a book that those pages become real and addictive. This Broken Bonds Book Two has done all of that to me.

The relationship between Quinn and Avery is a heart wrenching and fragile thing.

“You said even my scars were beautiful. But my scars aren’t just skin-deep, Quinn”

It’s hard for anyone who has such a strong moral compass to see shades of grey, and for Quinn, his drive for absolute honesty and righteousness is costing him. His standards are at times impossibly high for those closest to him. All of whom are damaged in many ways, but still striving for better. He works in a land of psychopaths and the roads are curved, but his self-evaluations are becoming more frequent.

“When I look back over my life, after I’ve become an old retired, washed-out detective with a back brace and arthritic joints, I wonder if this moment—this pivotal moment—will be my ultimate failure or biggest triumph.”

Told in multiple POVs, we get a good look into all of the players and their inner workings. Though this book is not solely about Quinn, he is the center of this revolving circle of chaos. In all honesty, I extremely disliked him at times; though I hazard to guess not as much as he hated himself.  Existential and empirical are the best ways to describe it all.

Ultimately it’s a thrill read hunting a serial psychopath, but it’s also a series that is producing a litany of secondary characters that I am absolutely salivating over. The amount of spin-off series/books that can come from this seems never ending; and if they all pack this kind of deadly punch we are in for one hell of a ride!

A thriller with an exhilarating undertone of sex, lies, and fraying moral fiber.

Trisha Wolfe has done it again! She has sucked me into her twisted and slightly dark world, to try and unravel the mystery of who the Alpha is! Quinn and Avery face some tough times in this one, and I was hooked to the gripping plot and to the growing sexual tension between them.

Quinn was such a great guy! I love how devoted he was to his work and the pride that he takes from doing it right. But right off the bat he was thrown a curve-ball that had him out the door for a while. He would stop at nothing to protect Avery and continued to do what he could to make sure she was safe.

Avery had to face her demons once again, and her workplace was not the safe sanctuary that she was used to. It was invaded by people that are helping with the case, and she found it hard to work alongside them. Quinn hovered around her, and she enjoyed having him close, but she was just as independent as ever. When faced with a difficult plan to try and out the Alpha, she was positive that she would jump in to help.

Quinn and Avery are a great team together, but it was sad to see that the truth kept them apart at times... They had to work through a lot of issues, but I could see that their love for one another was only getting stronger. I enjoyed the way the story unfolded, and how the little plans and twists kept throwing everyone. And you know how I am about previous characters making appearances, and seeing them all work together was fantastic!

Like every book that I have read in this world, Trisha Wolfe has a way to keep you guessing! She threw in a few twists that keep you on your toes and to make you think. I enjoyed how the storyline built up and found myself reading so fast, just to see what was coming! It was a thrilling ride and I need more NOW!

This book is like a chess game and the Alpha Killer has been cleverly maneuvering all his opponents into position to call checkmate. The unfortunate part is all of his players are the characters we've come to love with his goal being to get the Queen - Avery Johnson.

Avery is still dealing with scars both outside and inside from her kidnapping by the Alpha Killer. She is also dealing with guilt over the secret she and Sadie share. One she knows is going to do irreparable damage to her new relationship with Quinn.

When this journey started in the With Visions of Red series – Avery and Quinn walked on the right side of the line unlike Sadie and Colton whose souls had been tainted with the evil that had touched their lives. Now that evil has touched Avery's life and that just leaves Quinn still trying to honor the pledge he made when he became an officer of the law. Poor Quinn – he even knows he's in over his head -
"I'm like the giant, goofy kid stumbling around in the sandbox with the rest of the cool kids"

Sadie, Quinn, Avery and the police department along with the FBI are trying to find the Alpha killer. Let me tell you this Alpha dude is twisted. Not only is he twisted but he is extremely intelligent and has masted the game of toying with those he perceives as threats to him and he also will do anything to get what he wants and his end goal is to get Avery back.

This is not a stand alone book – nor a stand alone series. Books 1-3 in the With Visions of Red: Broken Bonds and With Ties That Bind: Broken Bonds book 1) should be read before reading this one.

There is a kind of beauty and lightness to be found in Trisha’s Wolfe’s darkness. I’m drawn to it like a moth to the flame, willing to endure the burn to get to the light. I’ve become nothing more than a Trisha Wolfe junkie jonesing for my next fix. Loving nothing more than to revel in the minds of her psychopathic villains and bask in the light and beauty I find in her words.

With Ties That Bind is the latest installment in The Broken Bonds World and it was one f@cking amazing high! The Alpha soothed my need and calmed my beast, for now. But like all addictions, the more you get the more you need and the monster is already demanding to be fed! The good news is that more is on the way. I’m am just going to have to figure out how to hold on until then.

Like any good addict, I want company, lots of company. I want you all to join me in my Wolfe addiction. Go get this book and all the books in the Broken Bonds world. The darkness found in them is smart, intricate, alluring, and sexy as hell. You know you want some Trisha Wolfe!

Not a standalone. It is re the romance (which does continue in the next and last book), but not the back-story. Dark scenes and police investigation regarding female trafficking and serial killings. This is book 2 of a trilogy and book 5 of the series, so I advise to read from book one. (All available in KU). There are lots of twists and red herrings and you do have to concentrate, as the bad guys keep coming then are replaced with others. The story is unpleasant at times and there are possible triggers for some. An interesting series.

Absolutely love Avery and Quinn!!

I chose to review this series as a whole, as the books are on the shorter side and build on each other to tell one complete story. You can read my spoiler-free series review here, listed under the final book.

Wow, can you imagine if the drug Trisha Wolfe created in this book was real?! It's seriously messed up on how realistic it could be. I'm loving how this story is unfolding. I can't wait till the conclusion.

Well, I certainly didn't see that coming!

With Ties That Bind was the perfect followup. There were things revealed and more hints dropped. There were revelations and "oh sh!t" moments. It had a slightly different feel because of events concerning Quinn - the action was there but there was less police procedural in this installment. However, it was everything I've come to expect from Wolfe with her dark thrillers.

I have to admit to getting a wee bit grumpy with Quinn. I *know* he lives by a code - he prides himself on it. But there are times when rules are meant to be bent, if not broken. He had to suck it up and figure out exactly how much Avery is worth to him. Avery, for her part, showed her incredible strength and resilience. She is someone to admire even if she'd disagree. Both Quinn and Avery did some growing in this installment, realizing the limits and boundaries they both had were maybe closer to guidelines when push comes to shove. Love has that sort of revelatory power.

I adored getting to spend more time with Sadie and Colton, Chase and Alexis, and even Carson. Honestly, I'm nervous with how things were left. I had no idea where this was going and I'd never have guessed it'd end up going where it did. Seriously, didn't see that coming! I'm even considering a re-read so I can take notes and create theories - you know, like a detective. *wink* I believe there's only one book left and I want to see if I can puzzle it out. I doubt it though. If Quinn and Sadie haven't figured it all out, I'm not sure I can. *haha* But please, Trisha, please don't hurt anyone...too much. I've come to care about them all and I don't know if I could bear it.

The ride is not over! But in this I feel like I'm on those rides you go on and you're completely in the dark...never knowing what is coming at you or what is in store for you until it's too late. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I felt that every time I tried to figure it out, it was like a bug caught in a spider's web. Every time you struggle you get further ensnared in the web. By the end of the book I was so friggen tangled up in my own assumptions, that I fear I'll never figure this out. So thank god I have Trisha to guide me through this.
Right now the puzzle pieces are slowly, piece by piece being laid before me, I know she will eventually give me all the pieces and I'll wonder why in the hell I didn't see it before that point. But isn't that what makes a great read?!

I love that Trisha makes me think about what I'm reading, right or wrong (mainly wrong! Lol) in my assumptions, I love that I have been kept on my toes and on the edge of my seat.

There are so many layers to these characters. Avery and Quinn have yet to fully hit their stride in their relationship and I'm loving the build up to this relationship. I feel bad for Quinn, in the fact that, at one point he really has no idea who to trust any more. The people he's surrounded by are not all they appear to be and for this very black and white guy, it is a struggle for him. Things are either right or wrong... there is no in between for him. Sadie, Avery and even Carson test his morality, stretching his boundaries way beyond his comfort level.

I can't wait for book 3, this Alpha character is kicking my inquisitive ass! I can't get a read on him. I am very intrigued by this character and my dark side needs answers! I can only imagine the intensity between Quinn and Avery will be cranked right up and I can't wait to be seared by that intensity! I would highly recommend this entire series!!

Part 2 in the Ties series shines a light on the very reasons Trisha Wolfe is the Queen of this genre. If you love romantic suspense...it doesn't get any better than this!

It's a love/hate relationship, I love the not being able to predict what happens next, but I hate not knowing...I love how these character care about each other and work to protect one another, but I hate that the things they've had to do cause dissent and mistrust among them...I love how strong and committed they are, but hate how their decisions have caused so much personal internal chaos. Yes, this story is perfect, it is the very reason why I read...in fact at one point in this story, I needed to remind myself to breathe before I passed out.

We still don't know who the Alpha is...it looks as though this mystery has been solved, but the gut of a stellar detective knows better.

I'm really looking forward to (not) the conclusion of this series, it's bittersweet, these characters have woven their way into our hearts as only the intricacies of a Trisha Wolfe character/story could...and I'm dying to see the Alpha get what's coming to him/her....hmmmm...

Are you ready? Because the team is back and things are about to unfold!!

Will Avery's secrets destroy everything she never thought she needed? How far will Quinn go to save Avery without destroying himself in the process? Who can you trust? Will all the secrets finally destroy the team?

Are you ready to get on another rollercoaster ride? Because that's what Trisha Wolfe does! She will have you on the edge of your seat, hairs on the back of your neck standing on end, chills running up your spine, and butterflies in your stomach. She will leave you guessing until the very end and wondering what the hell just happened!

I love everything about this book from the plot to the characters. The chemistry and the anticipation is off the charts!! The mind games will have your head spinning and begging for more. Just when you think you have it figured out Trisha throws another curve ball. I can't wait for the next book to see how it all ends.

This is not a standalone and has a cliffhanger.

"Before you can achieve your goals, you must first be daring enough to dream them."

With Ties That Bind, Book 2 picks up right where the last book left off. And let me tell you, if you thought the last book was dark and spellbinding, you haven't seen anything yet.

Book 2 is the ultimate game of cat and mouse. It is thrilling. It's sexy. And boy is it intense. This story has twists that will take your breath away and an ending that will shock you and have you screaming for more.

Trisha Wolfe has pulled out all of the stops with this one and I'm excited to see how this story will come together in the end....

With Ties that Bind 2 was amazing.. it had everything. Super sexy, dark and suspenseful. Loved having the other characters; Sadie, Colton, Larkin and Alexis . It was like reuniting with old friends. The relationship between Avery and Quinn is beautiful and complicated. I love the strength that Avery holds, she has been through hell and back and continues to be a hero to the victims out there. Love this game of cat and mouse with the Alpha. I can't wait for the final book to come out!

I am, once again, absolutely blown away. Trisha Wolfe is a master of suspense who creates characters that are unpredictable, addictive, and unforgettable.

WTTB 2 is a well crafted thriller that does not suffer from middle book syndrome. This is no filler info-dump, people. This installment is a delectable and and seductive mystery that is impossible to figure out. I'm excited to see what Trisha has in store for us in the final book.

Wow, this one was brutal. It was suspenseful through and through and had me on the edge of my seat until the last page. There was also so much cruelty and violence that made me shiver. I loved it! This was absolutely my kind of read!

Not everything was as black and white as Quinn wanted it to be. He was tested thoroughly because he lost more than he could have imagined in his orderly life and Avery was drifting farther into dangerous territory. Quinn wanted to protect her but his hands were tied with so much being stripped from him. He lost control in more than just one sense of the word and Avery was slipping through his fingers.
This would have the strongest and toughest put through the wringer. Now you can imagine how Quinn struggled between accepting the grey parts in life and turning against the people he cared about.
‘It’s the most intoxicating feeling, witnessing Quinn - who’s always in control – lose every bit of his.’

This one was my favorite so far. Edge gripping tension, unpredictable villains, unforeseeable actions, secrets, guilty consciences, lies, betrayals.
The worst of the worst, a monster so evil and deceitful, someone who had everyone play his game unknowingly. Manipulation, violence, cleverness, furtiveness. He strategically placed his marionettes to his wishes and got rid of every obstacle in his way. It was a delight to get glimpses inside the villain’s brain with his POVs. I liked those a lot more than in Sadie’s story.

I just wasn’t a fan of the suddenly deep feelings being confessed, which came out of nowhere for me since I was still at the forbidden/desire stage. There also wasn’t much between H and h yet to manifest something so deep but well, the main thing was the crime and suspense and everything else was just a bonus.

As always, it’s a pity that the books are so short. I just wish they were made into one book instead of split into three but luckily the next one already awaits me on my kindle.

For the first time Quinn let’s instinct override logic to protect Avery from being in danger and as a reward for his twenty years dedication to the police force his boss removes him from the case. He was instructed to reevaluate his priorities and gain some perspective.

Wolfe transitioned from book 1 into book 2 flawlessly giving readers a smooth view into Quinn’s new lease on life. His outlook on protecting Avery has opened his eyes at the dangers of having killers loose on the streets especially when there’s a mole working from within the department. Wolfe entertains readers with a saucy little auction centering on Avery.

Every step moves Quinn into place altering his perspective. He’s being molded and trained to view procedures differently with the help of Avery and Sadie. What once worked for him in the past is laid to rest while he conforms to new ways of dealing with killers.

Quinn removes one killer for another to take its place. Now he’s faced with the Alpha Killer. This killer is killing women with a symbol tattooed on their leg. Wolfe has readers in the edge of their seat with anticipation for a closed case.

Tracking down killers is a team effort. Sadie profiles the killers. Quinn investigates the scene. Avery determines the cause of death. Carson takes orders from Quinn. Wolfe illustrates each individual’s characters strengths and weaknesses.

A little all over the place...

But still entertaining.
Avery Johnson is still being targeted by the city’s latest serial killer, but her guilt and deceptions are pulling her in a thousand different directions. She's compelled to reveal the truth to Quinn- but then regrets it and constantly worries about losing him.
Her revelation, is the genesis of assembling an ACPD task force to infiltrate a corrupt law firm, and a criminal network with far-reaching connections. She puts herself at risk - again - in a sting operation that can go wrong a hundred different ways, in an attempt to unmask the killer (and conceal her connection them). It's a lot lol
Plus there's still too many Aubrey/Avery, Coltson/Carson similar names working in close proximity to each other- which is annoying.
But at least the department leak mentioned forever ago is identified- so there's that. And on top of it all Detective Quinn doesn't want to betray the woman he’s fallen for, or his former partner so he's always walking the line just outside of the law.
If you're looking for a sleazy, sordid, story with lots of moving pieces- this is it.

WOAHHHHH!!!! okay, so this book was insane, still don't know who The Alpha is, I thought it was Carson... but he was just a little weak boy needed some extra cash for his gambling habits! I hope Quinn dick punches him in this next book. lol

Avery, geeze, my sweet girl has gone through so much, and I seriously thought Quinn was going to leave her out in the cold, but he came back for her. AND THEY FINALLY DID IT! haha

I'm still sooo confused on who The Alpha is... so i'm excited for the twist. I've made a bunch of notes while reading this story to try and vet out the other characters that are mentioned in the story but i'm still coming up empty!

also, should I read derision next or the 6th book? if anyone knows... let me know.

I’m a fan of Trisha Wolfe. I love her Dark, Madly duet and the first three books in this series but with Quinn and Avery, I just don’t feel the connection especially when I knew that Quinn had some attraction with Sadie. Book 4 (which is the start of Quinn and Avery’s story) was just an ok read for me, but this book is a little boring for me.

Will I be reading other books from this author?
Yes, I like her writing style. I’m actually going to start another book from her after writing this review.

.....Quinn

The middle book of the With Ties That Bind trilogy focuses more on the black and white, by the book, Detective Quinn, and for the first time I felt he was engaged in the storyline. This book didn't hold my attention as much as prior books, but the plot is building and I'm looking forward to book three.

I honestly just didn’t find this book to be as good as the first 3 in the series. I didn’t really connect with the main characters, maybe because I appreciate a good vigilante and both were pretty self righteous. I would have liked more chapters from the Alpha POV, too. I’m going to finish this series but I found myself skipping some of it.
