Green Fields #1: Incubation If the zombie apocalypse happens tomorrow—how would you spend your last day?
All Dr. Brianna Lewis wants is a cup of coffee. Coffee, to make slaving away in her cell culture lab at Green Fields Biotech a little more bearable on a Friday afternoon when everyone is home already. What she doesn’t count on is a group of terrorists blowing up all the entrances to the building and taking her and a select few others hostage. Bree soon finds herself conflicted. Not only does she know their charismatic leader. She also starts to suspect that there is a lot more to this than the hunt for an illegal bioweapon—a virus that could potentially kill millions in just a few days—particularly as there is currently a flu epidemic raging across the country, and reports about violent behavior among the afflicted are getting more and more alarming.
Green Fields #2: Outbreak With nowhere left to run—where will you go?
Most of the world’s population is either dead or dying from a virus that looks a lot like the one Bree and Nate tried to destroy—and not all of them remain dead. Chased by hordes of zombies, they flee the city with what remains of their merry band of miscreants. But even when most of them survive the first day, they are far from safe—because there is no safe place left. The fight for survival forces them to become resourceful, and soon they realize that the undead might not be their only problem. In this new world, it’s each man or woman out for themselves—and just because someone has a pulse doesn’t necessarily mean they make a good ally. Yet there is hope—a bunker in Wyoming, outfitted with weapons and food, and above all else, defensible shelter for the winter. Can they survive the two-thousand-miles trip across the country with nothing but the clothes on their back and what they can scavenge along they way? This is not the kind of challenge that Bree ever imagined she would have to face, but she’s determined to survive—even if that means to learn how to on the job.
Green Fields #3: Escalation Is anybody out there?
After a long winter spent hunkering down in Wyoming, Bree, Nate, and the gang are back on the road. The harsh temperatures up in the northern regions might have decimated the undead scourge somewhat, but soon they have to face reality: it’s not just zombies that are out there to hunt people down and kill them. For humanity to have a fighting chance to rebuild a semblance of civilization, everyone will have to work together—and resources are scarce. Someone will have to go out there and face the danger—and maybe find out what happened to the undead that were smart enough to flee the cold. Only the strong and smart have survived, making everyday life just a little more deadly for everyone.
I usually read works from female authors so that I can avoid the shitty inferiority complex of female characters, but apparently they are not the only ones who can write horrible women. The main character is a viriologist in a biotech lab Another Zombie apocalypse comes about , crap. There are these paramilitary sort who break in and are trying to get information about a secret project. Turns out one of the guys has been familiar with the female lead. He also needs her help so therefore leaves her in a room with a man who has stated he will viciously assault her as soon as possible. And this is where all the women are weaker stuff starts, But it gets repeated over and over and over throughout the 1st 3 books. Despite her training and working her but off it is a theme that is emphasized ad nauseam, because She's just not as good as the super soldiers. That's one thing but All of them repeatedly bash or shame her for being inferior. Adding insult to injury the male lead is one of the worst and despite her being rightly upset and angry he justifies the (emotional and at times physical) abuse to make tougher in the new world. But its ok cuz he wants her to survive. So she continues on always trying to prove her worth, while they say she is part of the team they ignore her and keep her out of the loop. The point where I finally decided there wasn't anything redeeming was when she fell off a building while hanging from a rope to crumple defenseless (literally no weapons) on the ground severely injured w/ zombies around and her male lead walks off to go finish his teams objective (despite this not being his role in the mission).. Despite her being part of the team and her in previous chapters going back to save him, this Jack was team leader leaves his team member and love interest injured alone w zombies all around and she even has to find her way back to camp alone. And why because she needs to learn what it takes to survive.
This is all one thing, but the fact that so few women (20% of the population) survive and of those women most are only there for sexual relief of the men and are happy and content with the a it new roles. There are 1 or 2 females who aren't treated this way but they are lost in the weeds or a super soldier who scoffs at the idea of being considered a female. Just so irritating to read this book despite all the positive reviews
Re-reading again. This time in a handy box set! I love this series of books. The character development of bree is something I think we all wish for (up to a certain point. No spoilers) if something like this ever happens. Being a fan of zombie, dystopian/post-apocolyptic genre I came across these books by chance but I am so glad I did. I'm not going to say anything about the plot other than it is fast paced and the character dynamics are a joy to read. I highly recommend this series
I say different approach because this series starts in a lab where it all begins. I don’t feel like I know the characters as well in this series as others that I have read. I think the characters are jerks!! I feel like Bree was put in a crappy situation and they could be a little nicer to her. The part where they take turns punching her made me almost physically sick! That is the first time a book made me feel that way! I still want to finish the series but I just don’t love these characters!
Just finished books1-3. I read World of Anthrax before this (waiting for the final book in that series). A longer set-up scenario than most books. Knowing the author’s style, I just settled in quickly. Pretty good characterizations, though 3 books in, most of the team is unknown, meaning…, If I have a quibble, after this series and the Anthrax series, if the SHTF for real, I might have her female leads in my head…not that there’s anything wrong either that!
This series is different then others I have read about the zombie apocalypse. Without sounding too gushy it is not so "by rote" . Totally different perspective... That's all I 'm going to give away. Buy it and you'll see for yourself... Looking forward to immersing myself in the rest of this outstanding series.
I've been recommended this story for sometime in the Sarah Flemings Lyons book group. I was looking for something to hold me until her next book comes out and this got the spot. Bree and Nate were in my top ten. Im definitely following this author. I highly recommend this book
Well paced story with plenty of action. Better writing than many others in this genre. Good balance of zombies, fighting, science and relationships, with a touch of humour. Looking forward to reading the other books in this series.
I can't believe I have waited so long to read these books. I loved this 3 book boxed set. Well written, full of action and hilarious one liners, it was an awesome read.
