Searching the Scriptures: Find the Nourishment Your Soul Needs

Rate this book
Are you getting the spiritual nourishment you need? We've all experienced times when we have not eaten a balanced diet or we've eaten too many sweets. We feel sick, light-headed, and occasionally depressed, or we become irritated and edgy. It's the body's way of letting us know that it's lacking sufficient nourishment. Optimal health requires optimal nutrition. The same is true spiritually speaking. Without sufficient and regular biblical nutrition, our inner life begins to suffer the consequences. We become shallow and selfish, more demanding and less gentle, and quick to react impatiently, rashly, and angrily. These are telltale signs of inner malnutrition. In "Searching the Scriptures," respected Bible teacher Chuck Swindoll shows us how to dig deep into Scripture and uncover its profound truths for our lives. He outlines the principles of Bible study that will help you understand God's Word, apply it, and communicate it clearly to those around you. Too many people try to go it alone, without a guide, for this life and the next. Chuck explains how we can fix our own spiritual meals, then invites us to feast on nourishing truths we can discover in God's Word.

Published mid-September 2016, the buzz surrounding Searching the Scriptures intensified as the publish date crept closer. As an employee of Insight for Living Ministries (the Bible-teaching ministry of Charles R. Swindoll) I stalked my email in hopes of an advance preview of the book, which I heard was a game changer.

But alas. All was quiet.

Because, you see, the book-end and the broadcast-end of Charles R. Swindoll are quite separate. But Tyndale was releasing review copies of the book so as soon as I got my chance I lept. And I was not disappointed.

Searching the Scriptures is unlike any book I’ve read. I’d boil it down to Chuck’s personal Bible-study method, which he has broken out into four easy-to-remember steps.

Observation
Interpretation
Correlation
Application

Chuck describes Searching the Scriptures as the culmination of 60-plus years of cultivating a love for an pursuing an understanding of the Bible.

Broken into 10 sections and themed after cooking and serving a meal, Chuck takes the reader on a journey towards understanding—beginning, well, at the beginning. He overviews the entire Bible, then builds an argument for careful study of the Bible.

At the end of each chapter is a “your turn in the kitchen” challenge, and as the chapters build (from choosing the recipe to adding the spices), the reader is asked more and more to become an active participant in the book.

I love this book and the approach Chuck used to teach us how to study the Bible. We should not be satisfied letting others tell us what the truth is, we should seek it for ourselves by careful reasoning, study, applying wisdom, and knowing Scripture.

This book is more of a manual than a one-and-done read. I can see myself using it in group Bible study, personal devotions, and for those times I feel stuck and need a push in the right direction.

I’m grateful for this work and believe it more than met my expectations. For me, this book is a game changer.

We must search the Scriptures deliberately, consistently, and intensely. We must seek God's wisdom as we would search for precious silver or priceless artifacts.

When I first became a Christian, I started listening to Charles Swindoll. His passion for the word of God and his balance of truth and grace kept me a listener and encouraged me in my walk with the Lord. To love Him more and serve to further the kingdom. Searching The Scriptures, Swindoll takes our need of food as in preparing, planning and enjoying the feast as a parallel to searching the scriptures. What does bible study look like? How do we read the bible? What is application?
Each chapter reads to encourage you to hunger for the word. To respond to the word. And to apply the word. He walks you thru each step with verses so that we may experience that Aha moment. Just as a good well prepared meal gives us satisfaction, so does a serious minded student of the word of God. There is work to read and study the word of God. Because relationships take effort, it is not for the faint of heart or for the one who is lazy. It should however, compel us to want and desire more.

Good stuff to digest and leaving you wanting more.

A Special Thank you to Tyndale Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

Years ago, I heard Chuck Swindoll preaching on the fruits of the Holy Spirit. He mentioned that the go-to scripture is in Galatians, and that many people believe that is the ONLY fruit of the Holy Spirit, but then he went on to explain there are so many more:
The Fruit of our Lips is in Hebrews
The Fruit of our Contribution is in Philippians
The Fruit of our Character is in Galatians
The Fruit of our Conduct is in Romans
The Fruit of our Witness is in Acts
I took notes while listening to that radio sermon and then put them away. Several years pass and I find them again, and decided to take on finding out what Chuck was actually talking about.

Now he has a new book, Searching the Scriptures, in which he details the methods I used to find out exactly what he was talking about back then. It took a little spark of inspiration to find the nuggets of truth about this subject. His book is a challenge to hear what God is speaking directly to your own heart. He gives techniques, instruction, examples, and challenges. His writing style is informative as well as informally easy to read.

I count Chuck Swindoll as one of the few radio preachers worth listening to. This is a Five Star Book

I’m so excited to have an oppertunity to review Searching the Scriptures. Growing up in a church and a Christian household the Bible was important. It was something that was encouraged to read and study. But, I was never really taught the “how” when it came to opening it up. There are plenty of ways I’m sure, but this book intrigued me so I thought I would pick it up and see what it offered. For this review, I plan to talk about the parts of this book and explain what it is and how it is useful. Swindoll uses the analogy of finding recipes, cooking, and then eating as a way to explain how to study the Bible.

Section 1: Finding the Food

This section of the book is just a couple of chapters. The first, is a very high-level survey of the Bible. There’s a brief description of the history of the Bible and how it is organized. The second chapter focuses on preparing your heart to study the Bible. It reminds us that it has to be a priority and intentional. It reminds us that we have to prepare our hearts in prayer to open the Bible and learn from it.

Section 2: Preparing the Meal

In this first chapter, Swindoll goes in depth to describe his method of study: 1) Observation; 2) Interpretation; 3) Correlation; and 4) Application. He also suggests tools to have beyond your Bible: Maps, Dictionary, Concordance, etc. The remaining 4 chapters in this section focuses in depth on each of those 4 stages of study. Each chapter is filled with tools and examples of how to implement them.

Section 3: Serving the Feast

This final section is dedicated to what should we do with the knowledge that we gain from studying scripture. We should share it. In these chapters, Swindoll focuses on how we can share the Word of God and make it relatable to those we are speaking to and meet them on their level.

Overall, I’m impressed with this book. I’ll be honest in that the process as a whole feels daunting. There is a lot to it. But, broken into chunks it feels more manageable. Plus, this book is also full to tools and examples (Swindoll pretty much goes through a passage of scripture with each step to demonstrate how to study it). While there are multiple ways of studying the Bible, I think nearly everyone could find something useful from this book.

The book also contains some questions and tasks at the end of each chapter that help you practice what you just read. I could see this book being incredibly helpful to new believers or as a book in a Bible study group. But of course, also valuable to an individual person.

“The Bible doesn’t yield its treasures to the lazy soul.”

Sometimes, we get ourselves into the situation as Christians, where we’re not actually reading the Bible. We might be doing a Bible study, reading a devotional or reading a book about the Bible, but we’re not sure how to approach the Bible ourselves. That is a weakness that Charles Swindoll attempts to address in his new book, Searching the Scriptures: Find the Nourishment Your Soul Needs.

In this book, Swindoll compares reading and studying your Bible to preparing a meal. First, you have to understand the basic story of the Bible and then you have to realize how important the nourishment is to us. For example, Swindoll says:

A quick glance at a verse or two on the way out the door doesn’t give us long-term growth or satisfaction. Our spiritual food needs to be carefully prepared so it will sustain us and refresh us and satisfy the deepest longings of our souls.

He then spends time explaining why we need that nourishment and what a nourished and reasoned faith brings to our lives.

Stage two of this book is where the real “meat” of the book lies. In these chapters, Swindoll begins explaining how to pursue scripture. He offers a method of study based on observation, interpretation, correlation, and application that he further explains by devoting a chapter to each part of his method. And lest you think its all theory, the end of each chapter in this book contains practical applied study assignments where you get to practice each step of these study methods.

The final stage of this book is entitled serving the feast, and in this section, we prepare to dig into God’s word, learn where we fit into the study and we present the truth. He goes through each of these methods with some examples of scripture and shows how we can apply these methods to make a thorough knowledge of scripture and how it applies to our lives.

I found this to be an interesting and exciting book because it places tools into people’s hands. It gives a simple, approachable and systematic method for reading through the Bible and interpreting and applying it to ourselves and the world around us. There are things I disagree with (like his use of the NLT as a readable translation), but on the whole, I found this to be an excellent book, and an excellent way to pass on his study skills and ideas for sermon preparation onto a new generation.

Charles Swindoll is a very well know and well respected author and I have read a few of his articles before. I didn't realize what all this book would hold until I opened the pages. This is a step by step book on how to read and study the Bible starting with who wrote the Bible, and how it is organized. It includes maps, lists, charts, and examples that I thought was very well done. I like the layout and the end of each chapter has questions, which I could see this book being used almost as a Bible study or small group. While Searching the Scriptures could be a bit overwhelming for a new Christian I think this would be the perfect book that explains how the Bible is set up. This isn't a read real quick type book either, it is a slow actual process that makes you take the time and think about your purpose in reading the Bible etc.

I found this book to be factual and very helpful, something to hold on to and look back on as well.

Five stars.

Hands down one of the best books I read in 2016. I love the use of the process of cooking as the running example throughout the book. It reads almost like a biblical textbook. Looking forward to reading more from Mr. Swindoll.

In Searching the Scriptures, respected founder and senior pastor-teacher Charles R. Swindoll explains how we can all dig deep into the Bible and discover its profound truths for our lives.

Swindoll uses the four steps of observation, interpretation, correlation and application to guide us to understand God’s Word, apply it, and communicate it clearly to those around us.

I particularly love his analogy of the Scriptures as nourishing food, and how he describes the sharing of the Gospel as the cooking and preparation of food. With this analogy, Swindoll manages to make the book very readable and engaging throughout, so much so that I think even those who are unfamiliar with Christianity can read and get to know more about it through this book.

As is written in the book, “you don’t have to be brilliant or creative to know the Bible. You just have to spend time preparing, studying, praying, and giving your attention to Scripture.”

All in all, this is definitely a useful and helpful book for those who want to dig deep into the Scriptures! Thank you @broccoli.nn for giving me this book! 🥰

P.S. The book also comes with exercises after each chapter for readers to put into practice what they have learned!

I love reading God's Word but when it comes to studying its one of those overwhelming tasks that almost paralyzes you. Do I study by topic or by book? Is there a right or wrong way? Which way is the right way for me?

I think that reading and hearing the Word of God is wonderful but there comes a time where that is not enough. I think there is a point where you get off the " spiritual milk" and more into the "meat" of the Bible and Searching the Scriptures by Chuck Swindoll is the perfect way to prepare for the meal. From the first chapter I knew I was on to something. If you want a thorough introduction to Bible study then this is a great place to start!

Mr. Swindoll breaks it all down for you step by step and compares the steps to something simple and something we all can relate to: cooking. I have read several other books about various Bible study methods and it's almost like they're written in code! They left me frustrated and no closer to understanding the Bible than when I began.

The author even mixes in wonderful stories that help you remember certain steps. My personal favorite is a story about the importance of observation referencing Sir William Osler. I won't spoil the story for you but trust me it's one that you will never forget.

There are four main principles in Searching the Scriptures:

Observation - What does the Bible say?
Interpretation - What does the Bible mean?
Correlation - What other Bible passages deal with this idea?
Application - What difference does this make to me?

Mr. Swindoll goes into each of these in detail so everything is explained for you. There is also a "Your Turn in the Kitchen" section which allows you to go deeper with your understanding of that chapter as well as getting you more into God's Word. This interaction was truly my favorite part and am still working on some of the questions from several of the chapters so I can go even deeper in my understanding.

I could see giving a copy of Searching the Scriptures to a new believer so that they can start with a firm foundation in the Word or a seasoned Christian who might want to take a different approach to Bible study.

This is a must-have for anyone and will be apart of my Bible reference library for years to come.

Swindoll has dedicated this book to Dr. Howard G. Hendricks who taught him “many of the principles and techniques” included in this book. Swindoll says, “I determined to prolong the memory of his life by sharing with others what he faithfully invested in me so many years ago.” (v). Dr. Hendricks died in 2013. I think he would be honored by the work Swindoll dedicated to him.

This book is for those just starting their study of the Bible or for those that have been around for a while, too. I belong to the latter group and I have to say I have already found much within the first few chapters to be helpful. Things I either have never done or have gotten careless with over time that diminished the benefits of the study time I have spent in the last few years.

This is a step by step journey through the process of study starting at the very beginning with a brief overview of the Bible including sections, books, and some of the historical highlights along the way. There’s even a chart of the kings that followed Solomon by region, Israel or Judah. Oh, how I wish I had one of those when I first tried to sort out who was who and where. All that without overwhelming the reader. Truly a teacher that knows his students. After the introduction there is section to work with the information he had just discussed. Nothing too lengthy or difficult though. He continues in that vein throughout the rest of the book. The basic method used for study is observation, interpretation, correlation, and application.

His chapter texts are useful for learning some Bible and how to study it for yourself all at once. No wasted effort for the reader or student. Examples abound and then the reader gets to try some for himself at the end of the chapter. Slow going for those that wanted a quick gloss, but for those that want to learn and grow this works. Swindoll says near the end of the book that his “main desire in writing this book has been to pass the baton in this all-important relay of truth…. I want to stimulate you to pass the baton to others so that, too, will learn to find precious treasures in God’s Word and have their lives transformed. Then they can pass those truths on to others as well.” (251)

I recommend this book to you.

Bible teacher Chuck Swindolll brings an insightful word whether on the radio or in a book. In his latest book Searching the Scriptures, he shares how to dig into Scripture for ourselves and discover the truth of God’s Word for our lives.

“… studying the Bible is not only possible but doable. This habit is indispensable for life and ministry. There is no substitute! Searching the Scriptures yields a richness in life unlike any other.” (page 16)

He shares the principles and steps he has learned from other learned Bible teachers which enabled him to understand Scriptures and then clearly communicate those truths to others. It means applying oneself to the Word so that the Word can apply itself to you.

“The Bible does not yield its truths to lazy minds!” (page 17)

He outlines the study method he has used for years in four steps:

Observation. We need to look carefully at the words in front of us, paying attention to details. Become a detective to what is happening in the passage and its meaning. Read slowly and prayerfully.
Interpretation. We need to come to an understanding of what the text means. This is slowing ourselves down, perhaps using other resources to dig deeper into the events.
Correlation. We need to compare Scripture to Scripture so that we build our understanding precept upon precept, connecting passages to one another. Our desire is for the whole truth of the Bible to emerge and connect.
Application. This is making the Word personal to our own lives. It occurs when we allow Scripture to grip our hearts and minds and cause us to change or into action.

Excellent book and resource for both those new to the study of Scripture and those seeking to refresh their reading.

As a longtime reader of Chuck Swindoll’s books I was not disappointed by his latest delivery, Searching the Scriptures. I’ve often wondered how Swindoll finds so much to share with his readers (and listeners) in the Scripture passages he dissects. In ten chapters Swindoll reveals the method of Bible study that has served him well in his personal life and public ministry.

Throughout Searching the Scriptures Swindoll uses the illustration of cooking and compares the components of Bible study to the steps in planning and enjoying a scrumptious meal. From the back cover comes this gem of truth, “Without sufficient and regular biblical nutrition, our inner lives begin to suffer the consequences.”

Readers looking for quick steps to mastering Bible study will not find those in Searching the Scriptures. Though Swindoll breaks the process down into four steps–observing, interpreting, correlating, and applying–the study of God’s Word requires a time commitment. There are no shortcuts.

Swindoll suggests useful study tools along with links to web sites offering a wealth of resources. Rather than simply list these and move on, the author demonstrates how and where the tools can help in understanding the Bible. Swindoll flavors his presentation with adequate examples to aid the reader in utilizing the study techniques.

The material in chapter 1 may seem basic to experienced Bible students but Swindoll handles the review masterfully as he prepares readers at all levels for the deeper material in later chapters. Each chapter of Searching the Scriptures ends with reinforcing assignments and discussion questions making the book a valuable text for personal or group study.

Chuck Swindoll is a well respected pastor, teacher, and author. I have listened to his podcasts, but this is the first book of his that I have read. He does such a great job explaining the Bible and teaching the reader how to properly study the Bible. The commentary sections concerning biblical history are fascinating. Swindoll learned the principles in this book while at Dallas Theological Seminary, and he has been using and teaching them since entering the ministry in 1963.

Swindoll treats his method of Bible study like the preparation of a gourmet meal. He breaks down each step to fully equip you to plan and carry out a successful and enriching study of the scriptures. On the back cover he says, "Without sufficient and regular biblical nutrition, our inner lives begin to suffer the consequences." The four key elements of this effective Bible study method are: observation, interpretation, correlation, and application. He expands on each element throughout the book. The end of each chapter provides a self study for further understanding of the scriptures, complete with verses to study, challenge questions, and practical exercises to complete.

It is clear that Swindoll has a passion for teaching the Bible (and food!), and the reader will come away excited and fully equipped to intimately study the scriptures. Although this is written more for new Christians or those who have little or no experience studying the Bible, I would recommend this book to all christians, especially those who do not take the time to properly study scripture. I received this as a free ARC from Tyndale House Pubkishers, Inc., on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

There is no greater privilege for the believer than to read and comprehend the words of God. Chuck Swindoll's new book will help you do just that.

Swindoll provides a helpful outline for Bible study that transformed his life in a 1959 seminary classroom: observation, interpretation, correlation, and application. He develops each of these components and uses examples to demonstrate how they work in our study of the Word.

Observation is the initial stage, when one reads a particular passage of Scripture, and takes mental (or written) inventory of everything he notices about it. Observation is asking "What is this Scripture saying?"

Interpretation considers both the passage and the observations to lead to understanding, asking the question, "What does this Scripture mean?

Correlation is the point where the Bible student lets light from other passages shine on the one he is studying to prevent him from going out of bounds, or creating a doctrine from one verse. Correlation means asking the question, "What is the message of this meaning, in light of the witness of the rest of Scripture?"

Application is the part where the student, understanding what the passage means, makes a point of contact to his own personal life. It is asking the question, "What is the message of this Scripture to me, personally?"

This outline is the most helpful resource I have read in regards to studying the Bible. Whether you have been a Christian for a week or a decade, this book will help you know and act on God's Word.

This is a great resource for anyone looking for a basic but thorough introduction to Bible study methods! It would be especially useful for new Christians. Chuck Swindoll does an excellent job explaining the basic principles of Bible reading and hermeneutics. His four main principles are:
Observation- What does the Bible say?
Interpretation- What does the Bible mean?
Correlation- What other Bible passages deal with this idea?
Application- What difference does this make to me?

Throughout the book, Swindoll uses an extended metaphor in which he compares Bible study to the process of preparing a meal. Through these four principles, Swindoll guides readers through the process of discovering and applying the Biblical author's original intent.

While it is important for even the most mature Christian both to know and to be reminded of these principles, the way Swindoll introduces and explains his concepts will be particularly helpful to new believers or those who have not yet embarked on serious Bible study. Swindoll starts with an introduction and brief overview of the entire Bible, and then explains how to know what the Bible means. I recommend this book for anyone interested in getting more out of their reading of the Bible!

I grew up listening to Pastor Swindoll’s messages on Insight for Living, and then had the pleasure of attending Stonebriar Church for several months, hearing his sermons in person. All of his messages are bed-rock solid, and have impacted me throughout my life. In “Searching the Scriptures” Pastor Swindoll lays out his method for crafting those messages, and how to apply that to our own Bible Study.

He correlates the process of planning, preparing, and cooking a meal to the steps of Bible study. I enjoyed this allegory, as it was easy to follow and put into practice. There are certain starting foundations and patterns to follow to get the most out of what you’re consuming – whether the food be physical, or spiritual.

You will need to allow time and mental space to work through this book – there’s a lot to absorb in each chapter, and they just build upon themselves. The study questions help to facilitate that well. The author’s writing style is very conversational, which also helps the reader in understanding what is being said.

In all it was a very enjoyable, and quite instructive, read. I greatly recommend!

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy of Searching the Scriptures through the publisher and Netgalley.

In this book Charles R, Swindoll reminds us the importance of feeding our souks just as we feed our bodies.
The author reminds us that there are sixty six books in the Bible, with categories, ranging from History to Poetry to Prophecy.

We are reminded of the importance of healthy, nourishing spiritual food and warns us the dangers of “Spiritual Fast Food” that like Fast Food, leaves us with little in the way of nourishment.

Swindoll points out too, that just like there is a right and wrong way to prepare a meal, the same can be said for studying scripture.

Not only does this book tell us the importance of Spiritual Nourishment, but it gives us tools to use that will help us grow spiritually.

Searching the Scriptures is a great tool for those who would like to delve into the word of God.

Five out of five stars

Happy Reading.

Searching the Scriptures Find The Nourishment Your Soul Needs by Charles R Swindoll gives you the ingredients and recipe for getting more from your Bible.

If you ever struggled with studying the Bible not knowing how to start or how to apply what you read then this book is for you.

I loved this book. Charles R Swindoll has provided, with this book, a way to really study and apply the scriptures. He explains that just like us planning to nourish our bodies we need to nourish our spiritual bodies through studying the Bible. This book explains how to get started and how to get to the meat of the scriptures. The author helps you apply what you are learning with exercises for you to do also. I am planning on going through this book as I start my study in 2017 again of the Bible and I know that from what I have learned in this book I will really reap the benefits of my study.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to do more than just read the Bible. It is a book for those who want to study, learn, apply what they learn and grow in their walk with God.

I received this book from Tyndall Publishers for my honest opinion and review.

Chuck Swindoll never lets you down when he share his decades of wisdom on any topic, person, or scripture. He has done a great job again. This time, he has written a book to teach us how to get more out of our Bible study and learn to pass it on to others. Using four basic steps, he teaches us how to mine not only informative nuggets, but transformative boulders from the Bible so that our lives will never be the same. In addition, he teaches us how to use basic Bible tools and how to get the most out of them in a short amount of time. This book is a quick read. I started actually reading it yesterday, although I have had it in my book bag for weeks. Great read and worth your time!

You do have a soul. And amazingly, the people who are below average on intelligence can measure it better than the above average individuals. And that magical soul needs food. I await when Swindoll will get it about the important of physical exercise and will inspire beyond grave some other zealot to write a book of Kegels for the soul.

Having read "Living by the Book," written by Charles Swindoll's professor Dr. Howard G. Hendricks (which I also highly recommend), I found a lot of reflection of that content in "Searching the Scriptures." Still, I did learn a few new things about reading and understanding the Bible in "Searching the Scriptures." In fact, if you want a better understanding of the Bible, I highly recommend starting with "Searching the Scriptures" where you'll find the tools necessary to see things you've never seen before.

"Searching the Scriptures," is written in parallel with a cookbook, teaching how to prepare a Bible lesson step-by-step, just as you would follow a recipe. "Searching the Scriptures" is not a dull, textbook read but rather an enjoyable one, equipping the reader along the way. A must-have for anyone who loves reading the Bible and anyone who wants to love it!

This book was a joy to read! I always enjoy reading and listening to Chuck Swindoll’s words as he dives into scripture and helps breakdown the true meaning of it all! One theme that reoccurred through the book was using real life examples when teaching God’s word. Like farming analogies, or cooking recipes, whichever the audience is familiar with. Chuck acted like we were cooking a meal in each chapter, as we dug into different steps of studying the Bible! I’d highly recommend this book and anything else Pastor Swindoll writes!

I bought this in an audio format, and realized a chapter or two in that it is written as a study, necessitating a print format. What I did listen to was 5☆, but then the assignment questions began and my realization hit. I have to quit this book, but will keep it in mind for a future print purchase. Rather disappointing, but it was the problem of the audio vendor, not the book, so I will give it the 5☆s which is earned by the taste I got!
