Jennie Lucas

559 books327 followers
Jennie Lucas had a tragic beginning for any would-be writer: a very happy childhood. Her parents owned a bookstore, and she grew up surrounded by books, dreaming about faraway lands. Her mother read aloud to her in French when she was little; when she was ten, her father secretly paid her a dollar for every classic novel (Jane Eyre, War and Peace) that she read. As a chubby teenager, Jennie covered her bedroom with travel posters and always had her nose in a book.

At fifteen, she went to a Connecticut boarding school on scholarship. She took her first solo trip to Europe at sixteen, then put off college and traveled around the U.S., supporting herself with jobs as diverse as gas station cashier and newspaper advertising assistant.

At 22, she met the man who would be her husband. For the first time in her life, she wanted to stay in one place, as long as she could be with him. After their marriage, she graduated from Kent State University with a degree in English, and started writing books a year later.

Jennie was a finalist in the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart contest in 2003 and won the award in 2005. A fellow 2003 finalist, Australian author Trish Morey, read Jennie’s writing and told her that she should write for Harlequin Presents. It seemed like too big a dream, but Jennie took a deep breath and went for it. A year later, after seven years of writing and eight finished manuscripts, Jennie got the magical call from London that turned her into a published author.

Since then, life has been hectic, juggling a writing career, a sexy husband and two young children, but Jennie loves her crazy, chaotic life. Who needs a clean house? Every day, Jennie gets swept into drama, glamour and passion. Now if she can only figure out how to pack up her family and live in all the places she’s writing about!

3 - 3.5 HQ Smut Stars

I enjoyed this for what it was and am happy I picked it up; however, I also think there were a lot of missed angst opportunities that could have been super delicious. And groveling. The h didn't allow the H to grovel to my satisfaction - and he was totally going to! *pouts*

Oh well, a decent HQ Presents read. I enjoyed it. Nuff said.

5 AMAZING FORGIVING STARS FOR ME HERE!

Just about the best romance novel I have ever read here and believe me I have read a few.
This may be Jennie Lucas finest work yet!
Man can this girl write.
My emotions are all over the place here!
What JL can do to a revenge plot is FANTASTIC!
First of all it started with a car accident. A total chance encounter that might have resulted in the death of the heroine if not for the hero's awesome fast reflects.
They have both been let down by their parents. Her it was her mother and him it was his father. But she choses a different road than the hero, who wants revenge. She fell in love very quickly but he just saw her as a means to an end.
I don't want to give too much of this story away here but she tries to heal him. She tells him "I was so unhappy ...I didn't want to feel that way. So I decided to forgive her. To remember the good times. I chose love."
OMG this was such an epic moment.
I have goose bumps remembering it.
Now the hero Is a complicated character who say he can't love. But he is obsessed by her and can't get enough of her.
Now I will not tell you any more
READ THIS BOOK, you will thank me for it.

Here are some of my fav quotes

Worst line : "... If you tell, you are dead to me. Do you understand? I will never see you or the baby. I will divorce you Laney and I will start new. Find another woman. Have a different child."

Best lines : "...I knew then that I'd gladly die for you and our baby...for the rest of my life, I will live for you."
" You didn't give up on me, you loved me even when I didn't deserve it... You knew I could be the man you deserve. The man who loves you...and always will."

Safety: is perfect they are faithful. There are no OW/OM except for her ex boss who tries to get a relationship with the hero but he was like never.

Honestly, If you have never read a HP before this is the one that can convince you to give this series a go.
I am so glad I did. But I really love JL she wrote a powerful story here!

BRAVO! Standing ovation for me here!

Awww this was great. You wouldn't think a story with "revenge" in the title could end on such an upbeat note, but it does.

The heroine is the reason for this. She is Cinderella at the beginning. The two evil stepsisters are played beautifully by her evil boss and her friend. The prince and fairy godmother roles are played by the hero who provides her with a gold dress to the ball, a dance, and multiple orgasms later on that night. The next day - a marriage proposal and a whole new life.

This HEA weekend morphs into the revenge portion of our story. The hero is bent on revenge against his father who abandoned him and his mother when he was 10. The heroine, of course, advises against this and works hard to keep an open and loving heart to someone who is clearly out of reach while in revenge mode.

I loved the black moment that lasted about two pages It was the perfect ending.

He was a brief mention in the prior book, interesting!!

Updated to thoughts on book.......So when I saw the name Cassius Black mentioned in a prior book,I thought to myself, what a perfect name for a romance hero.Imagine my suprise and delight when I found out that indeed he is the subject of a romance book, this one,I was a very happy reader.
I can always count on Jennie Lucas to deliver a sweet romance with some mild angst thrown into the mix.I enjoyed this one which took place primarily in the beautiful Monaco, the tax free haven for countless millionaires and billionaires, and home to the most beautiful scenery and belle epoque buildings, and the flowers,so pretty.
Our billionaire and down trodden heroine meet in the time honored way of him running her down with his million dollar sports car.Luckilly for her,she was clutching her cruel employer's fur which broke her fall.
And thus begins the romance between these two. Both come from a background where one of the parent abandoned their children when they were each youngsters. In the case of the heroine,it was her mother who abandoned her and ran off to California with her lover, but being the heroine is so sweet and kind, she forgave her.The hero on the other hand, was abandoned by his rich father who never married his mother and his mother dies leaving him alone and a quest for vengeance against his father. He is fueled by revenge to get successful and destroy his father leaving him in the gutter. He succeds and is now the 9th richest man in the world. He plans his revenge very carefully ,and to seal the deal,he will marry and have a family, something he never had ,and something his father apparently wanted. He just needs the perfect woman ,and d now that he has met the heroine ,she meets his ideal for the perfect wife and mother.
Off course the hero does not believe in love ,but the heroine believes he can eventually come to love .
There were some great side characters, and one was the heroine's grandmother,a southern woman from Louisiana. When she comments " bless your heart " to the hero after he made some comment,I cracked up cause only a southern woman can say that and make it sound complimentary when in reality it really isn't.And all the mention of southern food made me ravenous,I really wanted fried chicken ,chicory coffee, and soft pillowy powdered beniets.
Of course their was some mild angst, but it was soon cleared up and a lovely epilogue with the family at Christmas gathered around the festive table with all and sundry, including the now forgiven's hero father.Seems he loved the hero's mum all along and was just waiting for his wife to give him a divorce.
Another character makes an appearance, Angel, I am guessing he is the hero of the next book, can't wait to read that one!
So,for me ,a really enjoyable read that hit the spot perfectly. Love this author.

(I hate writing reviews with my iPad but I still don't have my computer back so I'll just leave some ideas... Someday I'll edit this to give it shape).

Special thanks for Emona, I really needed a good HP.

I loved the Louisiana theme, didn't know much about the southern culture but I fell for the "bless your heart" and all that old-fashioned family stuff.

I loved Kassius, he showed he had a heart from the beginning. Yes, he was set on revenge mode but still he had niceties for Laney.

Laney was all sweetness, goodness and innocence with the martyrdom enough to guarantee a very lovable (at least in my books) heroine but I didn't love her

Damn this month was so good when it comes to Harlequin Presents! My two favorite authors had books out Maisey Yates and Jennie Lucas and both books were amazing. In this book hero wants revenge for something his father did to him but his marriage to Laney a sweet innocent woman changes his course of life and shows him the true meaning of forgiveness! Emotional and passionate romance! Another wonderful book by my favorite author!

Elaine/Laney and Kassius/Cash are electrifying together. I will admit that their roots reflect my own, and it was wonderful to read about a h/H whose families originate from Louisiana. A nice change from all the Greek, Italian and Arabic heroes! That is all I will state except that this author does a great job creating heroes who are difficult for good reason with emotions that run deep and heroines who are spirited, kind and genuine to a fault. The only reason why this wasn't a five star book for me was because the ending was cliched HPlandia in how the H realizes what he is throwing away. Other than that, this holiday and family themed story warmed my heart and was a delightful read. I would recommend this book and this author.

Loved the heroine

This was a very good story. The h was strong enough to stay true to herself and do the right thing. The H at the end almost ruined the entire story for me with what he did but he made up for it. This book has the insta-lust trope and a pregnancy plot. It's not a secret either and the H just wanted revenge on his Father that skipped out on him and his mom. There is angst, some tears and plenty of drama. It is safe though and I highly recommend it.

"Baby of His Revenge" is the story of Laney and Kassius.

Oh my heart!

In this beautiful tale exploring love, forgiveness and moving on, we have an explosive couple who find their HEA. The h and H meet when he almost runs over her with his car, and instead of a typical blame game, takes one look at her and decides she would be his woman. He slowly seduces her and makes her his bride. But the h requires love in their relationship and to make a home for herself. And while the H is more passionate than she could have asked for, she soon realizes his intentions are less than scrupulous. How they navigate these complicated waters, which involves dealing with traumatic pasts, letting go and learning to love and trust forms the crux of this story.

Very VERY sexy read with insane chemistry between the h and H. The secondary characters contribute a lot, the angst is delicious and their happy ending even more satisfying. I absolutely loved this and definitely one of the best books I've read in a long time. SO GOOD!!

The initial Cinderella touch was quirky and delightful– the poor but pure servant girl impression complete with cardboard evil stepsisters (one evil, the other more dumb), last minute finery, the midnight ball et al; only prince charming takes her back home with him at the stroke of midnight and she gets to get ravished!
This part was well done and captivating.

Then it settles into the generic billionaire fare with the ubiquitous pregnancy, the don’t–take-it/me-seriously-moc, the staple love?-huh!-what-is-that?, the pious I-will-be-the-one-to-teach-him-love. But I have to give it to her – this Pollyanna has a Steel Magnolia avatar too.
Two things stood out…
First, the grandma’s quilt. Like the wuv-me-wuv-my-bwankie. Lovely touch, that.
Secondly, the PI snooping business. Someone should tell these world’s richest that they can also be used for professional purposes and not just to ferret out info on future/present spouses. I mean they’ll save you much time and grief.
The h/H use PIs quite efficiently against each other but wish the Kuznetsov men (father and son) had too. Senior could have found that the man skulking around, buying his loans was in fact his long lost son; and junior might have found out that in truth senior was in an unhappy marriage and had gone back to look for his mother and was a indeed a broken grieving man. But men (in grandmom of quilt fame’s words “Any man that’s a man”) can be stupid that ways..

The last bit – her saving his soul – had me in the conundrums.
I mean, you may have the noblest of intentions but! You are heavily pregnant, girl and maybe you should think twice before setting off on the faithful to tilt at windmills – minus Benito/Sancho too. Who knows what awaits you in the ‘enemy’s’ den? So much goodness and faith in general goodness too!
Then the final redemption/absolution/cleansing of soul follows the dramatic jerk your chain life/death situation that finally brings the H to his senses and knees. Oh yes, pile on the guilt and the angst!

Just a case of me, not you, I guess. Because I can tell - by today's standards, it's an above average HP fare.

JL has a way of blending revenge, pleasure, passion, pregnancy, emotions and love and presenting it in a perfect twist.
It is hard not to like either of her characters at any point in the book.

Self-made billionaire Kassius Black had a scarred childhood, abandoned by his Russian father Boris Kuznetsov whom he thought cared only for his company and money, both he and his late mother struggled to live, but by the age of sixteen, he’d rebuilt himself, brick by brick, risking everything, holding back nothing.
Driven by revenge, he’d put his foot on the throat of success and forced it to cough up what he wanted.
Betrayed by his own business partner, he'd learned never to show weakness at any point or trust, and obviously, after all this, he closed his heart to love.
After starting all over agian, in over two decades, his small real estate holdings had grown into an international conglomerate. In the last few years, as Boris Kuznetsov’s oil company had run into trouble, he’d pounced, quietly buying up his loans and distressed assets, vacation homes around the world, his jet, the yacht – of course, Kuznetsov still did not realize whom he’d lost them to, and why.
With near complete ownership of his father’s assets, Kassius’s last vengeful step is to present him with an heir he’ll never get to know!

Pure in body and mind, Laney Henry is the perfect candidate to wear Kassius’s ring and carry his child.
She possesses rare qualities like self-sacrifice, kindness, honesty, generosity and loyalty, well, she is just so different from the women he use to date, and Kassius knows she'll fit perfectly in his plan.
Laney had her own share of problems – after Kassius' shocking marriage proposal, she thought of her own parents, who’d known each other their whole childhoods, growing up on the same street, dating all through high school, but it turned out to be terrible, it so happened that her mother abandoned her father and her, for another man, when they needed her the most and put her own selfish, ultimately futile pursuit of happiness ahead of her family’s needs.
However, Laney, being who she was, learned to forgive her mother and let go of her past.

Kassius was confident he had nothing to lose… but when everything is out in the open, and when there are no more secrets, then what will happen?

The chemistry between both characters was intense, and I loved the way Laney helped Kassius let go of the bitterness he harboured from his past, and forgive, not to mention the dramatic ending!

Updated Review (1/10/18):

I read this book when it was first released but didn’t write a review until December 2017. After re-reading this book I had to write a real review for it. I loved this book and Kassius, the hero, might be my favorite hero of all time!

Kassius is so dark and brooding and he waves his magic wand and turns Laney life around. Laney loves Kassius and Kassius treats her great with one exception, he can never love her. Kassius believes that love is a weakness and he’s too fearful of the power Laney will have over him if he allows himself to love her.

I seriously loved the character of Kassius. He was mentioned in several other Jennie Lucas books leading up to this one, so I was excited when he finally got his own book and was able to understand his desire for a southern cook (this is a reference to another Jennie Lucas book in which he was mentioned in). Laney loved Kassius and you could tell that he loved her too but wouldn’t allow himself to give the feelings he felt for her the name “love” for fear of being hurt. He’s such a complex character in that he’s an extremely alpha, ruthless tycoon yet he guards his heart out of fear.

As usual Jennie Lucas writes the most steamy sex scenes and Kassius and Laney set fire to the page. I will admit that the premise in which they got together was a little OTT however, the rest of the book made up for it. The scene in which he sends Laney away and she calls him.....and then he finds out what happens.....it was so emotional and Jennie Lucas did a great job writing these scenes.

As usual, I love the pacing of Jennie Lucas books. Things move along at a nice pace and we are able to see the characters at different stages in their relationship, which is nice. I loved how Laney’s family was able to find happiness at the end of this book. And I loved her grandmother!

5 Stars all around and I’m finally glad I wrote a proper review for one of my favorite books!

Original Review (December 2017):

Very emotionally intense read. Probably my favorite Jennie Lucas book so far.

Baby of his Revenge is perfect escapist romance.
Had a hard day, read this book.
Upset over politics, read this book.

In this book the hookup evolves into a romance. So hard for most authors to accomplish but Lucas has done it.
What I liked- everything. The storytelling. The chemistry between the hero and heroine. The drama and how the author dealt with it. The romance was shown growing evolving and the hero one saw him grow into a better man. The grovel....perfect.
The epilogue...awesome.

Nice Cinderella story.

She’s sweet and believes in love and forgiveness. Him? Not so much, he sees the world in black and white, and doesn’t believe in love or forgiveness. He spends his adult life seeking revenge against his father, who may or may not deserve it.

3 star story, an extra star because I like the heroine and her belief in love and forgiveness.

Finally! Back to what I love about HP books. Revenge, alpha hero, innocent heroine, baby, pregnancy. This one had it all. It was fast paced and kept me interested in the story. Jennie Lucas is often OTT but I really don't mind. I read for an escape and she definitely offers me a great escape.

Not a disappointment. The only reason this is a 4 star instead of a 5 is because the revenge plot and the "never see you again" theme was very similar to another book of hers. Other than that, kudos!

Omg I love this book.
They both have parent issues but she chooses a different road than the hero, who wants revenge.
I liked the H..even if he was set on revenge somewhere in there was a heart. He did a lot of nice things for h.
The heroine had the right amount of innocence, sweetness, goodness and be lovable.
The epilogue was lovely.

FIVE STARS FOR THIS AWESOME BOOK.

I love Jennie Lucas. She is one of those authors, whose books I purchase without thinking twice. And this is one of her best books :D

The H, Kassius (wonderful name) was a smug and arrogant man, and you cannot help but grow to love him as the book progresses.

The h, Laney, was so sweet and adorable. Five pages of the book and I knew I loved her. I cried, when she met with an accident.

I also happened to love his father's character.

This is one of those books I'll definitely read again and again.

DNF @ 40%. No angst. The h doesn’t even look for the man behind the billionaire. It’s all about what them billionaires do or don’t, her being a humble servant and possibly an expert on billionaires. Though not really.

Unpopular opinion, but this was a mild read for me. Got a little draggy in the middle and I was zoning out frequently and picking up other books.

Laney was sweet and mild and predictable. I prefer my h a lot less agreeable. There has to be some spark to the fire. I didn’t pick on any sparks at all. Kassius is seemingly ruthless and has been carrying a vengeance against his father who wronged him and his mother when he was young.

I found Kassius to be a hot lover but also slightly beta. He was too indulgent and bragged too much about how much wealth he had. I absolutely abhor how women play up to a man’s wealth like Laney here would feed to Kassius’s inflatable ego on how nobody says no to him. Kassius has all expensive clothing and jewelry boutiques opened on New Yrs day for Laney and he boasts about his power and wealth.

The book dragged and there is a misunderstanding cleared at the end. Too flowery and easy reading for my liking.

I didn't quite connect to this story or the characters as much as I have to other Jennie Lucas's books that I have read in the past. It was missing that angst and emotional rawness that is usually present in her books. I wasn't moved. I wasn't gripped. I wasn't hook. In the beginning I was overtaken by the lust of it all. There was good chemistry and attraction between them, but didn't go deeper than that or at least in my opinion.

It was a shame because the bones were there but not the guts that pulls at the heart strings. There was a glimmer of rawness here and there but quickly floated away before I could sink my teeth into it. I just would have dug a little deeper.

One example was their wedding day which was build up on the angst and raw emotion but quickly disappeared when it went into the bedroom and it was all about the lust I felt. I would have preferred to see a more emotional love making scene. More tender. Sweeter. Slower. Just to show that they had an emotional connection and caring going on and not just about the physical pleasure especially on his side. It just would have showed so much instead it just showed that he was hot for her bod and that was it.

So to say the least this wasn't my favorite Jennie Lucas book that I have read. I needed more angst and more emotionally than I was getting. I wasn't getting the feels. I needed that punch to the gut. Plus I wasn't feeling them as a couple. He needed to do a lot more groveling in my opinion. His feelings just came about to abruptly. I wanted to see him grow and change a little bit sooner. I wanted to see him fall in love for the first time and I just didn't. There had to be more than the lust for me to believe they were in love. Though contrasty the love scenes were hot and passionate and that was good yet at the same time there were not emotional enough for me. Bottom line I just needed more than I got.

It's really a me thing that I didn't enjoy this story much. I should've read more reviews and gone with my gut. Since I try to avoid books with intimate scenes and will skip any scenes I come across, I skipped quite a bit of this book. There were also too many references to the hero's past, something I always prefer to not know. The heroine was a pile of hormonal goo and couldn't help herself around the hero. I'm really tired of this kind of heroine. As it is, this story was nothing new. And while it was safe from any real OP drama, the manho hero getting the sweet virgin was a bit boring. Maybe if this book were longer and spent more time building a relationship between the two MCs, I would've enjoyed it a lot more. Instead, it read like a novella- the skeleton of the story was there but there was no meat on the bones.

Arrogance! Cold! Cruel Gorgeous! Mind blowing! Vulnerable! Take your pick all describes the sexy hero. Gosh I adore him! Despite being an antagonist in the first few chapters he won me over in the end. I felt for him as a neglected son craving his father's love. A repentant husband and virtually a reborn man with the qualities only the h could create in him. Jennie Lucas has done it again! Great read!
